No True Christian would Write Trigun? If you only realized how many Biblical Figures there are in the Bible that are flawed Besides Jesus given how Jewish writing shows its figures as Flaws as they are great compared to Greek writing that emphasizes the ups of the characters. You'll realize Vaush is no Corruption of a Prophet. But how someone tries to hold true to their ideals while being a Fallable individual. Heck. Prophet Jonah is the perfect example of a flawed Prophet. Thus Vaush is now more of a Follower trying to do his best to stay true to his ideals. Suffering doubt that honestly is not unknown to Christianity. If you ask there was no perfect saint. Of course there wasn't because humans are fallen but God still works through flawed people. Perfect example of this is St. Moses the Black. Literal Bandit turned monk after being moved by the Ascetic life of a Monastery but also had doubt when he became a Monk realizing his own flaws. Reading through the many saints makes you realize. There were human as well. But became more endearing for it. So no. Nothing you said about Trigun being Blasphemous makes sense anyways. I wouldn't call it Blasphemous. Closer to how a Believer would do what they can to stay true to their ideals. Stumble on that road but continue on it as well.
Yeah I feel like there is a quite a sense of irony in the fact that he is considered the natural disaster but realistically speaking it is a disaster brought on by the actions of the people themselves either out of greed or trying to stop a great disaster
@@The_Man_Who_Sold_the_World. It was. I read it when i first heard the new anime coming out, and even though there are some cool plot points and drawings, it's extremely mid. The writer is not a good writer, and the action scenes are terribly constructed and over complex where it doesn't flow from panel to panel where is just becomes a jumbled mess of ink.
Someone already mentioned it, but the person that almost killed themselves and stabbed Rem was Vash, not Knives. Knives passed out as soon as they discovered Tesla and Vash had a breakdown before seeing an injured Rem snapped him out of it
Yes! I'm always surprised when other people don't notice this! It is pretty amazing how easily Vash could have become the bad guy... I like to think that he was able to work it over through his outburst/attack on Rem but Knives bottled it up, and that contributed to his mindset; he wasn't awake to hear Rem begging for forgiveness or about how she had tried to stop it from happening so he had no context and couldn't understand how Vash had seemingly 'gotten over it'.
I couldn't agree more. I can't believe people are arguing that the anime is better with all those holes. Like Brotherhood was actually better than the original FMA. They don't realize how much filler exists in Trigun 1998.
In a way, Vash being willing to sacrifice the memory and ideal of his first ever family for the sake of another makes him more Christ-like than if he had continued to try and find another way. The man gave up his last major connection to Rem and his childhood.
@yadsewnde8699 Christ not only died for the sins of all humanity but He literally became sin in that moment. Because of this God had forsaken Christ when He died on the cross (Mark 15:34; Matt. 27:46). Even though this was necessary for Jesus to save humanity, you have to understand that He was extremely stressed even before the torture He went through. He did not do that with a smile on His face.
HIGHLY debatable. Christ said "will you take this cup" In reference to the responsibility placed apon him by god without his choice. When he was dying on the cross, he did not pray for humans, he said "why have you forsaken me father" His last words were pain and questions. The bible rarely if ever shows Jesus as a willing pawn in God's games. It mentions OFTEN how god sent his own son. But rarely does that son every express agreement with the plan. Also, depending on what type of Christian you are, Jesus never existed, or Jesus is god himself. So like meh
being a fan of the manga for about a decade people finally talking about it and realizing how insane and great it is is, ive been screaming that from the mountains for years
Great video! Though there’s a correction I need to add. The person who tried to kill themself and accidentally stabbed Rem wasn’t knives. It was Vash. And while he experienced a second of relief, he immediately regretted it and started screaming and crying. Also, I remember reading the manga while it was coming out and while there were times I’d get confused, I don’t remember having as much trouble as you and some other people seem to have when it comes to reading it and understanding what is going on. 😰 Regardless, I really enjoyed the video!
@@alphan0rm939 I think it adds a lot to vash as a character. He’s not immune to despair or anger, but fights to be better. His struggle is made more meaningful by the fact that he did sink that low as to feel good after hurting someone. Especially since he does genuinely love Rem.
I just straight-up couldn't read it. I followed the plot, largely, but I simply couldn't parse a lot of the action scenes, and I had a similar problem dropping me out of One Piece, though there I jsut disliked Oda's overcomplicated art phase. I do read a lot of crazy and obtuse art like Blame but some exceptions I jsut won't put myself through when I got so much on my backlog. On the other hand, I really apprecaite just the basics of the craft brought to extreme, ike Yusuke Murata, Kouji Mori and Katsuhiro Otomo...'s son, Shohei. Just to shout out his ballpoint pen art. And to make the point, Akira and Monster still ahve a lot of that western, pin-up stye DNA that is not UNIQUELY a manga staple. That's why I don't go for those titles to rank what would be the BEST manga, at beign a manga. Same as my favorite movie is not Les Mis and Les Mis is not the best MOVIE, but the stage production is my favorite at beign what it is. Well, maybe Titus has got it beat despite being hindranced by having to be a film as well. If you're going to do anime, you SHOULD go for making something like Trigun OG though. If you do something like the Les Mis film because a film HAS to be THAT, you're failing at both ends. And Stampede kinda falls into that rut, especially with voice acting. About as good as Russel Crowe singing, and I feel it's becauase it was an afterthought after everything else.
Yeah exactly! Knives was passed out the entire time until Rem was already recovering from being stabbed. That's why he didn't get the "blank ticket to the future" speech that (I think, and maybe it implies outright in the manga?) solidifies Vash's morals and makes him believe in humans/humanity.
One point, I thought the one who stabbed himself was Vash, and the point was that by overcoming the outburst and the dark spiral he entered from the trauma allowed him to overcome and adopt a complex outlook on morality, while Knives becomes as messed up as he is by suppressing it all and growing less emotionally stable over time. It fits the manga exclusive portrayal where Knives is the more emotionally vulnerable brother initially
“It’s deep space future gun action” as the casual backdrop explanation to every freak out - what a wonderful world 😂 Another amazing video that covers so much. Thank you BP.
Did people really get confused that much over "Plant"? Like industrial plants are pretty well known? Then again the venn diagram of people who work in plants and people who read/watch Trigun is probably barely intersecting to be fair.
Came here to say exactly this, they were never described as the thing grown in your garden, but an industrial complex designed to extract something from nothing, which just so happned to be an "angel" they are more akin to nuclear reactors than things in your garden and playing on the allusion that they can create something from nothing, heavily depened on, but essentialy a ticking timebomb that can /will end humanity, the was so much nuace and psychology that was missed in this video about them that i assume was just to get political quips in,
I appreciate the discussion around religion here, since it’s so integral to Trigun’s story. One thing I do just want to say though, is that since there are so many branches of Christianity that believe very different things and interpret the Bible very differently, it changes how you interact with it. The idea of “perfect saints” is more akin to Catholicism, or works-based Christianity, while “everyone is imperfect, all we can do is our best for peace and love even if we fall short” is more like Protestant, or or faith-based Christianity. As someone who loves Trigun and is the latter myself, it gets frustrating when discussions about my religion are dominated by lumping my branch in with another branch that doesn’t match up with my beliefs at all. Thank you for this video! Trigun always deserves more love, no matter how much it gets!
I have to step in and defend Wolfwood at @24:10 , the true translation of the Commandment is "Thou shalt not murder" and there are numerous instances where people are given the OK to take a life in defense of others or in times of war. Man's out there doing God's work the best way he can and don't need undue shade for it.
This is FASCINATING. I am an agnostic, but as an educated man, I have read the King James and studied multiple religions; I went looking for god and did not find him. THAT BEING SAID...this might be the single best argument I've seen in years for the existence of God. This was the first time I've genuinely questioned my beliefs in quite some time, because I very much understand the importance of the distinction being made here. I was not aware of this distinction until now, from a biblical standpoint. I will remain an agnostic for the moment, but this DOES give me something to ponder. Regardless of outcome, you're 100% right - Wolfwood is a certified badass on all fronts, a flawed hero but a hero nonetheless. You're also right about murder being very different from killing in defense of self or others. I will think on your words, internet stranger, thanks for posting this. Be well.
This is just my personal opinion, but as a man of (christian) faith myself, I don't think writing a story like Trigun as a christian is blasphemous. Quite the opposite, I personally think christian creators should make content like this. Sometimes "christian" songs, movies, or whatever loose quality in exchange of a "christian" message (for example, why all worship music sounds like U2 repeating the same phrase 30 times) instead of just creating good stories, songs, or whatever. Christians should stop making "christian" content, and start creating good content. I think is possible to do that around personal values without falling into boring repetitive cliches.
Atheist myself, but I agree with you 100 percent. I consider many of the old Biblical Epics like 10 Commandments and Ben-Hur true works of art that anyone with an interest in film history should at least make an effort to watch, they're just that good. Most modern Christian media is more focused on selling a modern agenda instead of depicting timeless stories.
I agree with you as well. As someone who is also a Christian, I found that watching the Trigun series also helped me evaluate myself and how I live. Do I live out what I say I believe, or do I live in constant hypocrisy. The Bible is amazing (I’ve read it now many times through) because it isn’t meant to be a guidebook, but rather to show the greatness of God who is totally and completely unknowable, but is kind and loving and chooses to work through really broken and messed up people. The stories in the Bible aren’t meant always to be practiced, but learned from. There is redemption available for all people, even the most broken people. And that’s the beautiful hope we have. The story of Trigun also reminds me of that.
@@JNeedham Another thing to add. Look up how Jewish story is told vs Greek story is told. I learned from another Bible Channel that Bible figures save Jesus were meant to be shown as Fallable as they were great.
@@arnowisp6244 Right, Jesus is the only one who lived a perfect life in the Bible. Everyone else in the Bible is shown to have made mistakes and struggled even while sometimes trying to do the right thing. Because that is the human condition. We all don't get it right, and often live hypocritically, even when we don't want to. We are fallible.
i read the manga in like 4 days , i just couldnt stop and it was a journey i can never forget , completely underrated and sadly forgotten jewel of manga / anime history and i hope , so bad !! that the new trigun will do this masterpiece justice and will, hopefully, have many seasons to come !
in the OG translation its not "thou shall not kill" its "thou shall not murder", there is a HUGE difference, defending yourself via killing is NOT murder, killing in war, etc etc, there are various ways it was justified throughout history, but its only the last hundred plus years or so where we changed it to "thou shall not kill"
I'm not a Christian, but I still 100% agree. Modern Christianity really mistranslates and warps a lot of lessons from the New Testament (mostly due to the NKJ version, which made several changes to legitimize tyrannical kings and reinforce subservience of the population). Most people don't understand the subtext in some lessons Jesus taught, which were more in the theme that true power comes from a legitimately strong person deliberately _choosing_ not to use that strength (i.e. the "Blessed are the Meek" Beatitude). After all, are you really _choosing_ to be a pacifist if you have no means of inflicting violence? Interestingly, Trigun really seems to really understand that subtext very well with Vash having godlike destructive power, but choosing to not harm others and help where he can... Even to his own detriment.
@@Mortiel TBH most who are christian, wouldnt agree, or at least not for that reason, as too many of them think the bible is THE word, and has NEVER been altered, and they tend to just ug their ears when you tey to teach them actual history, its really only the ones who have read multiple different bibles, and atudied religion, that admit this stuff, sp really its just religious scholars, and the non religious lol.
To me, after learning about how batshit the manga is, it feels like the anime actually did a great job of reigning in Nightow's insanity to make for a more concise and just as emotionally hard-hitting experience. Sometimes less is more, people.
It was good, but with the way the anime plays out, they should've had more episodes. The GHG could've been explained as well as Vash's abilities because it's very confusing.
I read the manga as it was released in America. And OH MY GOD, it's so different, goes in different directions, gets darker, gorier, more action packed, my inciteful, than the anime series, and also explains more about things like those damned light bulb plants.....which, after explained, you kinda NEED to know this for the Vash and Knives to make sense! The last battle for Wolfwood is better, more action-packed, and has much more depth, and the final battle between Vash and Knives is a 10 to the anime's 3 (at best). I chalk all this up to the original writer/creator/mangaka Katsuhiro Nightow making the anime when the manga started, then taking 10-ish years to write the manga, getting more ideas and changing things around over time and making the story better than what he originally envisioned. THE BIGGEST THING OF ALL BETWEEN THE MANGA AND ANIME......once you read the manga series, you just can't go back to the anime, and you wish they'd make a new series that stays more true to the manga (like they did with Full Metal Alchemist and Hellsing, only getting better with their second anime series).
@@LilyAnn-iz5bm What I said was about the manga as a whole, using Wolfwood's last moment as an example. If you're gonna be a downer just because your cute psycho murderer fake lover boy gets not killed, but chopped the hell up into several pieces, sown back together as a Frankenbitch, remade into Knives little "catcher" and 'NOT'-favorite anymore......go somewhere else. Make your own comment. Stop trying to change mine into yours. It's GOD-AWFUL ANNOYING, and it's also disrespectful. And if you feel like using some excuse like "but I was just making conversation", no, no you were not, not by a long shot. Piss off.
It's been years since I read this manga, but I remember having a lot of trouble trying to follow the panels sometimes.... often times actually. I would have to re-read pages over and over, studying action scenes in detail just to figure out what happened. And most of the time I would just end up moving on with only a basic understanding that "Oh, Vash won I guess..."
The sandworms are possessing bodies by slipping in with the little mosquito forms. Very ew! Edit: And no, it is not Knife that attacks Rem with a knife, it is Vash. That was one of Vash' focal points towards his position about forgiveness and pacifism. Added to that, Rem herself is a person that is in atonement. She didn't act to protect Tessla, the first independent plant, and has a massive amount of guilt because of that. That's why she goes to far against ship protocol and keeps Vash and Knifes secret.
Okay I think this maybe glosses over the coolest aspect of Legato in his fight. As funny as “his body is healed for some reason, don’t think about it” is, it’s actually way more metal than that. I could be wrong, but from my memory he’s able to move only because he’s using his body control threads on himself. Like his body never really healed from Knives pancaking him. He just recovers enough to puppet himself, his own broken bones around, in order to move. And that explains why he’s way stronger and able to swing huge weapons around suddenly as he’s using the electricity through the threads to pump up his own muscles to their full limit at all times. That’s why he doesn’t try to use his control threads on Vash at first and instead attempts to overpower him with the new weapons and fighting style, because he’s using all that power just to make himself move. As well as the coin case thing that’s supposed to block that I guess. Other than the one monitoring Livio’s fight. Eventually he is forced to use it but at least at the beginning that was my takeaway from it all~
great video! I just wanted to point out at 52:16 it was actually Vash not Knives who didn't eat and tried to end his life, which I thought was a very significant plot point considering it was how Vash's views on humans were changed after witnessing Rem's self sacrificing moment. Knives on the other hand passed out and didn't witness Rem being stabbed
Someone probably mentioned already about Wolfwood's appearance at 58:55, but as I interpret it, he stays on the arc after separating from vash since he's working for knives (getting vash there in the first place was also part of his job)
I am almost a year late to this video, but I grew up with the original animated series and this was so nice to view. The manga would definitely overwhelm me, so experiencing it through you was relief! I’m still confused about Stampede and the original anime, but at least now I know the full story.
I really need to read the rest of the manga. I grew up watching the 98' anime and it's one of my top favorites. Part of it was because of the fantastic characters and the action and part of it was because of the Christian imagery (I grew up and am still a practicing Christian.) Watching and falling in love with TriStamp reignited my love for the series and seeing this video got me super siked for the manga and for the future of Trigun Stampede. I really hope that Dark Horse reprints the manga now that TriStamp is picking up speed. I'm not sure if I agree with your assessment that a "true Christian" couldn't have written this manga though. Part of what I loved about the series as a Christian is how bleak it is even in the anime. How the anime shows the cost of Vash's values despite trying his hardest to live by them. I appreciate how the story constantly challenges Vash and Wolfwood's values and shows that they fail. I honestly prefer a story that takes influence from Christian values and does their own thing and challenges the reader rather than a story that just preaches to you one way while demonizing the other. Even if Nightow was questioning his faith while finishing the manga, I still find that more impactful than most Christian media in general.
This was a great trip down memory lane. Loved the trigun manga so much. I started with the anime, but the tragedy of the manga really showed me how great a story and how amazing Vash was as a character. Kudos to Nightow for putting the story. (Even if his art during action did make a lick of sense most of the time.still looked dope though. Laughed at how much you guys touched on that fact in this video.) I actually like the new anime since to me it better captures the tragic attrition of the pacifist then the original did, though doesn't quite hit the balance of levity and questions of morality the manga had. Hopefully the next part does it more justice.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who was so confused in Maximum. I tried reading it as a kid but I couldn't follow it and I dropped it. This video was great
Very nice video!! Yall did get a few facts wrong (like the mix up of the person trying to off themselves being Knives instead of Vash, Knives not having his black streak after merging with the plant(s), etc), but for the first one, like yall said the manga does NOT make it easy to understand whats going on sometimes, and they're fully twins, so no shit they look alike and are easy to mistake for one another. Honestly I feel the only reason I understood the manga as well as i did is bc I more or less studied each panel, since I'm in love with the artstyle. I loved the analysis at the end, as i always do. I feel like yall really got to the meat of what makes Trigun, Trigun. Just a really great video!!!!
Trigun looks like another one of those mangas whose creator was heavily influenced by American comic shorts; in this case, Calvin and Hobbes. Similar to how the creator of Ranma½ and Inuyasha was inspired by Peanuts. But Vash also bears a certain resemblance to Elric of Melnibone; in that things rarely end in some sort of unrealistically idyllic way for him.
I appreciated the synopsis / analysis. I remember trying to get into the manga at one point, but I dropped it and found myself satisfied with the anime for clarity reasons. The segments of confusion over interpreting over-busy panels was cathartic, and I got to have the story I missed made digestible. I still need to think on it and chew over the differences between the two. Not having read it myself, this might not be a charitable take, but I can't help but wonder if the rest of the manga wasn't a bit bloated. Here's what I mean: Trigun really is about the clash between the real and the ideal as Vash tries his hardest to hold on to his pacifism. It's been some years since I watched the anime, but thematically, I don't know that the '98 anime is missing anything integral to the message of the story. I love big epics as much as the next guy, but there's also something to be said for a preaching knowing when to stop once he's made his point. That being said, as an Evangelical Lutheran minister in training, I can't help but roll my eyes at the various ad hominem's against Christianity. I found myself convinced by this video that Trigun is more thoroughly Christian than was hastily argued at the end. The whole point of Christianity is the need for Jesus Christ to be the Savior of humanity. Denominations will argue the *how* of salvation in Jesus Christ, but the whole point is that God decided humanity was worth saving of his own accord. Vash does much the same thing. He refuses to take life because of an inherent value, a presumed sanctity. Yes, church history is a history of sinners, but that's kinda the point? Vash is a Christ figure to be sure, but he does not end up being Christ himself. Ultimately any Christian who communicates through narrative ultimately will make characters who are flawed, who cannot live up to perfection, otherwise Christianity wouldn't need Christ.
In the closing remarks when it is said that "ideals need to be put aside sometimes" in the context of doing what is right to avoid hypocrisy, I think the real disconnect in the interpretation of virtue is that Trigun is a world without a good, omnipotent, omniscient, sovereign God who can carry out good which cannot be hindered or overcome by evil. Without such a sovereign God, virtue has no meaning, cannot stand against the power of evil, and must be cast aside to in the pursuit of utilitarian ideals when push comes to shove. In Trigun we are shown fallible, finite people who cannot escape the problem of evil, and who must sacrifice virtue at times for the greater good because the alternative is impossible for them. It makes sense that without God, virtue becomes hypocrisy, but just because Trigun contains Christian themes, does not mean that Christianity is subject to the flawed interpretation of virtue here.
I'm thrilled to have seen this video. Trigun always seemed in myth because so many people expressed their love for something that artistically was a mess. I needed to figure out how to approach it without getting a headache. This video covers everything in enough detail and emphasizes an understanding of the theme to convey an incredible story of guilt, personal agency, redemption, and forgiveness. Thank you so much!
Trigun was one of the first anime I watched, and it's one of my favorites to this day. It does a great job of tackling that conversation of faith and the human condition.
I think putting aside specific religions and creeds, Trigun has a pretty simple lesson to teach: Righteousness (as in the things YOU believe to be good and true) is easy. It's as easy as pulling a trigger to end the life of an "evil" person or dominating a group that you think is immoral with your followers. No matter what political or religious spectrum you align with, your human nature craves vengeance and retribution for things that you see as wrong in the world. Sometimes that comes in the form of bigotry. Sometimes it comes in the form of refusing to listen to someone's point of view before condemning them publicly. This is the path of Knives, and it feels so good. Vash represents the harder aspects of faith and morality. Living and letting others live despite the potential threat they offer to your way of thinking or way of life, self-sacrifice in order to show others that there is a better way, building relationships with people who don't think like you instead of being aggressive and "morally pure". It has no immediate payout and it sometimes results in nothing but loss, but it is indeed the only way forward without hatred. And, yeah, we see that no one can be perfect all the time. Sometimes there is a need for righteous hellfire to consume a destructive and "evil" threat. I think Vash just shows us that reaching for the gun instead of thinking about love and peace first is not virtuous, despite how it may feel to you at the time. For every dogmatic priest there is a sanctimonious Twitter preacher telling us how we must think to align to the new morality. People love to moralize, they love to shame and punish. People want things to feel good and be easy. But if we are to be better as a race, we need to start turning to the methods that feel hard and arduous. That self-satisfied, smug feeling you get from schooling a "libtard" or a "conservative snowflake" is not virtuous, it's nothing but masturbation. Vash would ask you to try reaching out your hand before you pulled your gun instead, to see if maybe you can create a future that's not played out in the ruins of the human world.
Back in 2009 when i found out Trigun continued i promised myself itll be the 1st manga i read, then kenshin to read the last couple arcs that were never animated. I still stand by this promise to myself💪🏾
Commenting to help with the battle with the algorithm! Currently 4 volumes into maximum so I'll come back to this video once I've completed it! Love the work you folks do.
Trigun Maximum felt very easy to follow for me personally but someone else explaining it felt like 3 consecutive punches to the brain. Edit: Are these the Maximum7 scanlations because they miss almost everything and are almost 20 years old.
Nightow is possibly one of the most fristrating artist I've ever seen... because he's clearly very talented and I would love to enjoy his art IF ONLY I COULD UNDERSTAND IT
i genuinely am in awe over this video, it's so well written and the discord call cutaways had me dying LOL. im watching this after finishing trigun stampede cos i wanted more trigun content and now i understand what everyone means when they reference the /couch scene/. the explanations of each character and their arc were incredible and it made me love trigun even more! thank you both for your hard work. tldr, i would take a bullet for bonsai pop (against vash's will)
Thanks for making this video! I binged the manga a couple of weeks ago but , I have to admitt, couldn't follow along with most of it. I had to have the wiki open at the end of each chaper to understand what I'd just read. Also was convinced I had missed chapters as so much was not explained. Glad to know i'm not alone and can relive this story without trying to follow the insane visual noise of those gun fight panels. I'll be listening to this in the background many times while I draw fan art :)
24:20 By the way, verse is thou should not murder and not thou shall not kill ( which is a common Miss translation ) . Also, the Catholic Church and Pope don't represent most churches.
I hope sometime in my lifetime this gets animated. I loved the 90s Trigun and the CGI Trigun in 2023. But seeing the entire manga animated would make me a happy man and I could go in peace 🚬 ✝️
That was Vash that tried to stab himself. Vash dealt with his feelings, not initially in a healthy way, but he did face them and deal with them. Knives passed out and woke up without remembering Tesla at all. He suppressed the memories and consequently failed to come to terms with them. It ultimately drove him insane.
First time ever listening to a video from this channel, I thought the overall breakdown of tri-gun was fun but the closing argument was meh. Just seem like a bit of stretching, such as Christianity is more lethal today than it's ever been. It's a little far-fetched since we don't have crusades anymore and you have countries where they worship their leaders like gods such as North Korea that kill far more people on a yearly basis. And then there was the MAGA reference which is always just cringy to hear in first place. But it makes the author of the video sound like he's working on his gender studies degree. Other than that, the portion of the manga, which is what caught My eye in the first place was very good
Its been sad to see this guy's mental illnesses take over the channel and impact his work like this. He's been doing this a lot lately. I mean this is a guy who wept when Elon bought twitter. He needs to touch grass so badly.
This video might quite literally be everything to me, not only because it handles a piece of Art™ I adore with all my heart and have too many thoughts about that I can't articulate, but also because it does so?? Again, not eloquent enough to put my brain maggots into words, but especially the last bit of this video, the message sent so to speak, it is perfect for Trigun, it is much needed to my heart, and it's? It's a perfect video, basically. Also because help, same about all those fight scenes omg the struggle. Thank you so much for all your hard work and for this video as a whole~ ♥
I really like this video because as well made and as long as it is. This only scratch the surface of it all. There's so much damn layers to that bad bitch of a story, it would make an onion blush. So many readings possible, so many depth and contrast between every characters. Even the most boring arc has something to add to the heart of the manga and its characters. I'm so happy Stampede shone a light on Trigun once again and more and more people are picking up the manga because it's really a masterpiece heh.
@@stormiskiez9250 dude!!! Ys is literally my FAVORITE series!!! Adol Christin forever!!! By the way... do you eat your oranges with or without the peel?
So the guy who wrote the manga, converted to Christianity, and calls himself a Christian, is deemed by the atheist creator of this channel, that the artist is not a true Christian because... @BonsaiPop liked the story and the story marks a struggle of faith. Are you sure that you are not in a cult, or a bubble, or was abused in some way as a kid @BonsaiPop. Struggle with faith is the core story of every great Christian story ever written. Hell, that's Gawain and the Green Knight written by the Pearl Poet, an anonymous monk.
Awesome video! You can defiantly tell a lot of love & effort was put into this. I hope some day you can do a video explaining the short stories from the bonus Manga that came out with Badlands Rumble
The funny thing is that the recent remake Trigun Stampede is actually more faithful to the story. But people who didn't read the manga (myself included, oops) complain about it not being the true Trigun.
The manga being so great and different than the original anime is why I was so disappointed to see that the new Trigun anime wasn’t a full adaptation of the manga
As fondly as I've loved the '98 anime since my early teens, I could barely get myself to read through the first chapter of the manga on the single occasion I tried later on. I remember looking at the familiar ground it was covering and thinking "Okay, cool. Exactly how much of this am I gonna have to put up with in order to get to the new shit?" So with that in mind I highly appreciate the synopsis this video has provided, especially context I had been unaware of regarding the inception of Maximum. I had heard before about the shift being due to it's OG publisher going under, but knowing the OG run was for a Shonen mag while Maximum's pub was Seinen really puts it into perspective. It reminds me of this one day sometime in my early 20s I was hanging out at a local card shop. The owner ran it like a pawn shop at the time, so there happened to be a fair bit of other stuff just kinda hanging around for sale, including a shelf that had some manga amongst other books. I happened to spot a lone volume of Trigun Maximum (English) in there, so I popped it open to a random page and found myself right in the middle of Wolfwood vs. Livio/Chapel with absolutely no context (the point-blank missile panel stuck in my mind for sure) I had so many questions, and it feels quite nice to finally put them to rest. However... Taking all this madness in, abridged as it may be compared to reading the actual volumes in their entirety, I can't help but find it remarkable just how perfectly Trigun '98 managed to hit the mark. Sure, it's a whole lot smaller in scope compared to the staggering scale of the manga's expanded cast and details, yet it seems all the most important concepts remain faithful in spirit... There's a bit where this video's script refers to Anime Knives as "the mysteriously motivated villain" that _really_ rubs me the wrong way. I felt his motivations were quite clear, even if the vast majority of his characterization only takes shape in 98's climactic finale. The spider/bufferfly metaphor is simplistic and childish, yet to me it seems an effective and accurate summarization of his character. All it takes for '98 Knives to reach the exact same judgement of humanity as his manga self is a basic grasp of historical events, the inherent predator/prey dynamic present in natural ecosystems as observed by humans, and quite possibly just _one_ personal experience being on the receiving end of domestic abuse. What follows from there makes sense to me, even if it doesn't have time for Knives to spell out every decision he makes... I feel the important ones are fairly obvious in context, even if the last episode in particular might take a rewatch or two to sink in for some viewers.
New series really gave this fandom second life Watched old anime as well. Enjoyed both versions Gonna read manga soon, your spoilers won't stop me Thanks for the video!
30:28 in.Legato proves Vash's philosophy incorrect and Wolfwood's to be pragmatic. When Legato presents a no win situation to Vash under his philosophy of pacifism he is forced to adopt Wolfwood's philosophy of realism or watch the woman he has secretly come to love and her close friend die together. Wolfwood was always correct in his philosophy. His philosophy of realism is perfectly summed up in one sentence of his dying confession to the Lord "I did what it took to protect the children at any cost.."
You had me up until the very last three minutes. You just let too much of your personal views come out. Otherwise a very good video and a nice way to spend an hour while at work.
I have to say as a Christian I love Vash as a Christ like figure because he is not supposed to be he falls short of that ideal but in a very human way he sticks to his guns for most of the series and a critical point chooses to go against his moral code to save someone he holds close he is something Beyond human but he in all but body is
There's a big error at 52:11. Vash is the one who tries to off himself and stabs Rem. Not knives. Knives is in a comma while all this happens. You can tell it's Vash because the mole on his cheek is visible when he's drinking the Capri Sun

As someone who's read Trigun & Trigun:Maximum, I've waited ten long years for someone to do a manga Trigun video.

Knives passed out as soon as they discovered Tesla and Vash had a breakdown before seeing an injured Rem snapped him out of it
Thanks for clearing that up. Was it the mole under his right eye? For me it's always hard to tell who is who during their child era.
@ツFamily Account For me it was the mole, the hair, and the narration in that part of the flashback! That and I fucking love TriMax so much
Oh that's a good bit of plot actually, thanks
It's funny that Trinity Blood is more honest to the source material (stealing from Trigun) than the Trigun anime in regards to Rem backstory
Trigun really needs the Brotherhood treatment. I was pleasantly surprised by Stampede but I'd like to see a full adaptation of the manga.
I couldn't agree more. I can't believe people are arguing that the anime is better with all those holes. Like Brotherhood was actually better than the original FMA. They don't realize how much filler exists in Trigun 1998.
I agree. I refuse to watch Stampede, I hate the redesigns and I hate that it looks like the crappy Berserk remake.
@@JohnLick96 I still think 03 FMA is better, also Brotherhood completely bungled the part that 03 got right.

Trigun's ending is so bitter sweet and makes me a little sad anytime I remember it
In a way, Vash being willing to sacrifice the memory and ideal of his first ever family for the sake of another makes him more Christ-like than if he had continued to try and find another way. The man gave up his last major connection to Rem and his childhood.
What does that have to do w being Christ like?
@@yadsewnde Sacrifice
This gave me chills!
Christ said "will you take this cup"
In reference to the responsibility placed apon him by god without his choice.
When he was dying on the cross, he did not pray for humans, he said "why have you forsaken me father"
His last words were pain and questions.
The bible rarely if ever shows Jesus as a willing pawn in God's games.
It mentions OFTEN how god sent his own son. But rarely does that son every express agreement with the plan.
Also, depending on what type of Christian you are, Jesus never existed, or Jesus is god himself.
So like meh
being a fan of the manga for about a decade people finally talking about it and realizing how insane and great it is is, ive been screaming that from the mountains for years
No you're just bandwagoning
Dawg it was on toonami you're not special😂😂😂
Great video!
Though there’s a correction I need to add. The person who tried to kill themself and accidentally stabbed Rem wasn’t knives. It was Vash. And while he experienced a second of relief, he immediately regretted it and started screaming and crying.
Also, I remember reading the manga while it was coming out and while there were times I’d get confused, I don’t remember having as much trouble as you and some other people seem to have when it comes to reading it and understanding what is going on. 😰
Regardless, I really enjoyed the video!
Yeah, at first I thought it was Knives as well but I noticed the placement of his mole and my heart SUNK.
I'm living for this Trigun renaissance. The nostalgia in this series is unmatched. Good job on the video, love you guys

I was thinking the same thing. It never was meant as "kill".
Be well.
@@fredlodge1275 look into cliffe knechtle, his perspective on christianity is different but good and interesting
100%. I immediately scrolled down to see if anyone had already said this.
This is important to understand
@@arnowisp6244 Right, Jesus is the only one who lived a perfect life in the Bible. your confusion about the panels made me feel so much better about my own inability to read the mangas panels!!
in the OG translation its not "thou shall not kill" its "thou shall not murder", there is a HUGE difference, defending yourself via killing is NOT murder, killing in war, etc etc, there are various ways it was justified throughout history, but its only the last hundred plus years or so where we changed it to "thou shall not kill"
Christian/Judaism: Finding loopholes in their own rules for as long as those rules were written down.

No, vash killing his own son broke me and the anime never even came close.
Yeah well, trigun stampede seems to be going a little insane too. Honestly, the first adaptation felt more grounded
@@Emilstekcor the anime was WAY better than the manga. I'm not a fan of naked knives and crazy legato
The anime was made before the really insane parts of the story were written.
Naw Legato is HORRIBLE in the manga and his death was 10x better than any scene he has in the manga
@@LilyAnn-iz5bm What I said was about the manga as a whole, using Wolfwood's last moment as an example. Duh
The Godhand music playing in parts of this video is such a great touch for a tiny fraction of the audience.
I was looking for somebodys comment about godhands music, a perfect fit!!
It's been years since I read this manga, but I remember having a lot of trouble trying to follow the panels sometimes.... often times actually. I would have to re-read pages over and over, studying action scenes in detail just to figure out what happened. And most of the time I would just end up moving on with only a basic understanding that "Oh, Vash won I guess..."
ough yeah it’s a rough fucking read visually. no idea what happened in any given fight.
Anyone else as wildly happy as I am that video is from Bonsai Pop, it's over an hour long, and it's about Trigun? Let's do this.
The clips of “confusion editing” was a brilliant touch.
I first watched Trigun exactly 20 years ago this month; It will always hold a special place in my heart.
He definitely fixed his Paneling issues in Blood Blockade Battlefront
This came out gorgeous, excellent job guys!
This video was great

the trigun resurgence has been such a blast, soooo happy to see this in my sub box!!
Just a really great video!!!!
thank god someone mentioned that!
Hour long video on trigun from bonsai pop! Love it! Especially when your first video on Vash is what got me into watching it in the first place!

Same here. It started my love of anime.
It's been 14 years homie, no time like the present to start reading lol
@@0Enigmatic0 my dude I know lolll, the naruto manga actually sold me on manga as a whole, I just did anime my whole life
Thanks for covering the manga! Some of my favorite Milly moments in there.
I really wonder what Trigun Stampede is going to do with the story, also really love it when you cover any part of trigun :p
Same. I'm also wondering if part of the difficulty in understanding it came from reading the worst possible translation.
Damn, didn't know I'd find you on RUclips too
Nightow is possibly one of the most fristrating artist I've ever seen... because he's clearly very talented and I would love to enjoy his art IF ONLY I COULD UNDERSTAND IT
i genuinely am in awe over this video, it's so well written and the discord call cutaways had me dying LOL. im watching this after finishing trigun stampede cos i wanted more trigun content and now i understand what everyone means when they reference the /couch scene/. the explanations of each character and their arc were incredible and it made me love trigun even more! thank you both for your hard work. tldr, i would take a bullet for bonsai pop (against vash's will)
Thanks for making this video!
I guess he must have been serious about never leaving his house. If that’s what he actually thinks America is like.
Is this what you mean by above?
I hope sometime in my lifetime this gets animated. I loved the 90s Trigun and the CGI Trigun in 2023. But seeing the entire manga animated would make me a happy man and I could go in peace 🚬 ✝️
I gotta be honest, I am not seeing 'buttplug' on 95 % or more of the things labeled as 'buttplug's and (imsorrybut) I should know.
You guys had a lot of fun with that Ad. I'm a huge fan of this kind of Ad content lol
I don't read that much manga, the art in this demands I take the time though. Thanks for going over what I have been missing!
Yey thanks! Finally finished Trigun Stampede. Waiting for season 2 as Milly would be appearing after Roberto's death.
This is why i love this channel. I get the context as well as the story
Just finished the manga today, An absolute experience it was.
10/10 ❤
I'm so happy Stampede shone a light on Trigun once again and more and more people are picking up the manga because it's really a masterpiece heh.
i’ve never read the manga but this video was great! coloring the panels really helped i can’t imagine the work this video took to make!
Well worth the watch! Really makes me wonder how much Trigun Stampede will get into what happened in the rest of the manga
It's already adapting parts of the manga with a new spin on it, so I think it'll be closer to the manga but not a one-to-one adaption.
@@itsasquid
Wouldn’t the anime need to be like 4 or 5 seasons long to adapt the rest of the manga?
@@torchlight1785 Probably. I know that while season 2 is announced, they also said they want to do as many seasons as they can. Who knows.
LOVED this analysis I wasn't expecting to hear some music from Ys towards the end!! Very nice to see another Ys fan
Dude no way... Another Ys and Trigun fan? I thought I was the only one!!! 😅😅😅
@Ulpla 😭😭 DUDE... ys is like literally one of my favorite series
@@stormiskiez9250 dude!!! Ys is literally my FAVORITE series!!! Adol Christin forever!!!
By the way... do you eat your oranges with or without the peel?
Your rant at the end about trigun being a better bible than the bible is kind of stupid
Such an amazing show and the story was great too
oh man, been waiting for this one!
The funny thing is that the recent remake Trigun Stampede is actually more faithful to the story. But people who didn't read the manga (myself included, oops) complain about it not being the true Trigun.
Trigun is a got damn masterpiece. It and cowboy bebop are the quintessential Westerns of anime
The manga being so great and different than the original anime is why I was so disappointed to see that the new Trigun anime wasn’t a full adaptation of the manga
"it's deep space future gun action, man!" is quickly becoming my catchphrase to explain away everything in life
As fondly as I've loved the '98 anime since my early teens, I could barely get myself to read through the first chapter of the manga on the single occasion I tried later on. I remember looking at the familiar ground it was covering and thinking "Okay, cool. Exactly how much of this am I gonna have to put up with in order to get to the new shit?"
So with that in mind I highly appreciate the synopsis this video has provided, especially context I had been unaware of regarding the inception of Maximum.
New series really gave this fandom second life
Watched old anime as well. Enjoyed both versions
Gonna read manga soon, your spoilers won't stop me
Thanks for the video!
All I got from this hr long video is that you really really don't like Christians.
The second half of this video really took a nose dive which is a shame since the first half was super good
I had been waiting for this! I read the manga in PREPARATION for this video. Hell yes it's finally here
You had me up until the very last three minutes. You just let too much of your personal views come out. Otherwise a very good video and a nice way to spend an hour while at work.
That was so interesting, had me invested from start to finish! I don't really know what to think about Trigun as a whole now, honestly.
I have to say as a Christian I love Vash as a Christ like figure because he is not supposed to be he falls short of that ideal but in a very human way he sticks to his guns for most of the series and a critical point chooses to go against his moral code to save someone he holds close he is something Beyond human but he in all but body is
What?
well know I understand why vash and wolfhood are shipped so hard
This one is my favorite of all your videos so far. Really well done, guys. Thanks so much 🙏
There's a big error at 52:11. Vash is the one who tries to off himself and stabs Rem. Not knives. Knives is in a comma while all this happens. You can tell it's Vash because the mole on his cheek is visible when he's drinking the Capri Sun
could do without those weird conversation bits. otherwise good video!
Awesome video! This explanation is much appreciated 🙏🏻 I can’t wait to reread this manga when dark horse releases the deluxe editions next year 🤘🏻 also, sic use of the Hotline Miami music dude 🎵 one of my favorite soundtracks (and games)!!
The constant bashing of christians was a dick move
I just got my hands on the complete run of Trigun Maximum in English. I'm very happy
Does anyone else find this guy's complete hypocrisy galling? 1:19:00
😂 holy hell I was dying laughing during the “lightning round” so glad I found this channel 👍🏼 🎉
Hyped for this
Loving that God hand soundtrack in the background
