    "best friend" lol
    ryo/satan was in love with akira my dude. that was the tragic part about the ending. ryo's realization that love was real and realizing it way too late.

      @birisuandrei2866 5 лет назад +619

      Agreed, tbh another thing people didn't get, that I really loved, was the fact akira could feel Ryo crying inside... He told him he's crying too when the cat died, ryo was incapable to understand.
      But at the very end after killing everyone and getting the taste of loneliness and emptiness Ryo realised that akira meant his suffering of being thrown from heaven and the loss of what he cared about but didn't realise it in time.

    • @uzernam303
      @uzernam303 5 лет назад +378

      Yeah that's what they were. Ryo may have loved Akira, but Akira never considered Ryo more than a friend, and died bitterly hating him for destroying humanity and indirectly killing the person he loved most: Miki.

    • @SuperShanook
      @SuperShanook 5 лет назад +70

      being in love with someone is damned close to best friend my dude. In both instances one really cares about the other. In the case of Ryo and Akira I don't think the distinction has to be made, at least from Ryo's point of view

    • @realswobby
      @realswobby 5 лет назад +196

      @@SuperShanook But it really is about love. You have these words, spoken by Ryo: "Love doesn't exist, therefore there is no sorrow. That's what I thought." At the very end he finally feels sorrow and cries, when he realizes Akira is gone.

      Ryo is in love with Akira, and his punishment is to "lose the one he loves" over and over. It's said outright that Ryo fell in love with Akira and it's also reinforced in Amon: The Dark Side of Devilman and I believe also Devilman Lady?

    I love the ink blot thing so much because by the nature of them even being ink blots, you're naturally going to just see whatever in them without ever realizing they're actual characters. But then once you watch the show and you're familiar with these designs, you start picking up on what they actually are in such a way that you're never able to un-see the characters in that shot. Which is awesome because it both works as a device to keep the monster designs hidden and as symbolism for how people are unaware of the demons living among them until they reveal themselves.

    The bit about humanity's hands reaching up in Akira's pupil reminded me of all the "pass the baton" imagery. Especially juxtapposed with Miki trying to pass it to an Akira who's not there right before she's killed. And that reminded me of a similar imagery of presumably Ryo reaching out his hands to a black void before him at the first and last episode while saying the "Akira, I thought there wasn't love or sorrow but I was wrong" speech. A PART OF RYO ACTUALLY WANTED TO CARRY THE BATON (love/hope/compassion of humanity?). THE IMAGERY IS COMING TOGETHER AND FUCK I HATE YOU YUUASA.

    Maybe it's a stretch, but could the darkness/blood coming out of the heart in the beginning be a reference to the idiom "bleeding heart"? Adolfo Berríos crying too, the weeping of jesus over jerusaleum is an extremely important part of jesus’ crucification, and the line “he always wept for others” is indicative of the allegory of christ. Funny enough, in the manag, I read that Akira is more akin to jobs, having been let to be punished by Satan even though he did nothing wrong.

The rest of the time he's being a dick it's one because thier the enemies of the people of Israel. Or to the people of Israel broke the Covenant so they need a spanking and divine equivalent to that anyway. Which is nothing compared to God actually abandon them which is actual hell.

    I thought it was pretty clear that Akira represents Jesus. I mean, he literally suffers for humanity, and tries to sway dehumons to not be lost to their darkness, and that weird huggy scene was symbolic of humanity coming to love and even worship their savior. The irony of the supposed savior of humanity being unable to save it afterall, that Satan would fall in love with the son of God, and ultimately killing him leading her/him to discover he/she grew a heart... Well, that's just a theory. A Crybaby theory??

    DC was so fucking good I forgot Netflix made it. Devilman alone was one of the first manga i'd read due to my dad. Seeing the different takes of it I didn't think Netflix could handle or grasp all of what Devilman is. I was so wrong. I was wrong. They fucking exceeded my expectations and I now have some faith in them.
    Episodes 9 and 10 are the most compeling and emotionally grippling episodes i've seen in awhile. those 2 episodes alone make this adaption amazing, but the soundtrack and even those random rap guys were just icing on the cake along with the characters that were not even apart of the main cast.
    The opening is both for old fans and new. It comes off amazing and if you know the material you know the references and if you don't you're gonna have a " Damn that's cool wonder what it means." feeling. All in all after watching this adaption I can say Netflix good job. Keep doing this. Don't let this become a one hit wonder. Study what you did right for future adaptions or originals.

    I'm sure they made this because of the success of the 009 vs Devilman OVA series. That did well enough to bring back Cyborg 009 (despite the design changes and 3D animation), and now it helped get this the green light. That's freaking cool. I hope they make a sequel series that concludes the time loop

      Nareik Usnob I mean, there are a number of sequel stories to devilman, at least from what little I've seen. Whether or not another series gets animated, we'll have to wait to see. Hades seems to follow up the events of the show, based on the description I found, but devilman takes place in a time loop, so I figure it would have another season to explain how that whole thing works and to officially end that before moving into the sequel territory. But maybe not. I don't really know enough about the lore to know how it goes

      Robert Biteman The story is better if you have a long story with anime, as it breaks the mold a lot, having the main character not be invincible and not win everything just because they trained for 5 minutes, the most tragical deaths are complete twists from what should be expected, even Miki's death has the slow-mo where every other anime would add an ex-machina and save her, but no, she just died.

That and cause the world of devilman is devoutly corrupt, sexual and, for lack of a better word, "sinful" in nature. I mean, Ryo is seen only as an asshole when he starts murdering people to draw out the demons and the rappers react to his machine gun like having a gun pulled on them is a regular normal thing, they barely even reacted to him shooting at them. I think it's safe to say the society of devilman isn't the same as our own. That or I'm way more sheltered than I realized lol

She just wanted to beat Miki in a lot of things and came to terms with her suppressed feelings when she realized that they might die that night. honestly in the original manga it's much more gruesome to a certain degree. Miki's parents get dragged off to this anti-demon corps and are horribly tortured and murdered. Veeryone else gets killed in Miki's house. Taro, Miki's brother never turned into a Devil man in the manga, and is with Miki, but gets decapitated by the deranged humans. In the manga Miki also gets stabbed but for all we know she could have been tortured and maybe even raped before getting decapitated. Miki's character is much better in Crybaby than that original manga imo, so her death his more saddening in Crybaby

    Personally I thought that the falling lights behind Ryo represented nukes/missiles falling down on the earth, which foreshadows the humans eventually destroying eachother (a very important theme in the later episodes)

    This is one of the first animes I've ever seen in years to stick with me in years. I've always been thinking about it in terms of the substance of the way it was made from its animation and soundtrack and how the story was made

      That’s why Masaaki’s works are instantly recognizable. I noticed it was him the moment I saw the plant planet episode in Space Dandy, and the OP’s style looked a lot like his planet scenery in Kaiba, so i was very pleased to see his name in the OP

    THANK YOU for putting into video form what I've been stewing over for the past week and some change. I watched the opening pretty much every episode and still watch it because of how well constructed it is.
    I'll throw in there that the shot of Miki crying also alludes to her death because the framing only shows her head. Thus when it reflects to Akira upside-down (I didn't think it was him until you mentioned that), it's a direct reaction of his pain since he ends up carrying her head when he initially confronts Ryo.

    I liked the characters in the show, but the timeline moved too fast and the pacing seemed off during the second half of the season. It left alot to be desired in terms of secondary details. LIKE HOW THE LITTLE BRO (spoilers)

    I didn't notice a thing about the OP because i just watched it on the first episode and then just skipped it. I TOTALLY REGRET!! i realized about this when i read on twitter about ART-EATER threads. It opened my eyes and thanks to him i found out so many details and with you some others. It amazing how can someone blended and mixed so many hidden things, at first something simple but if you look carfully there is so much behind. I appreciate this, is trule great. And about the series, i LOVED it with all my heart. Well-done, it made me cry, cry so much. I just can't describe. Everything had so many actual concepts and it was heartbreaking to see them in our real world.

    It was an incredible ride! Ever sense I first read the manga, I have been stuck to this franchise like a human's face in Jinmen's shell From its viciously brutal fights, to its heart tearing (out of chest) plot twists, every aspect of it is amazing. So when I saw Crybaby pop up on Netflix one afternoon, you bet I was hooked instantly. With incredible visuals, and amazing voice work by both the dub and sub teams, Crybaby is one of the best entries in the Devilman franchise has to offer in my opinion. Then they decided to add even more by giving the fans the showdown between Devilman and Zenon we always wanted. But my favorite part of Crybaby is what they did they layer an extra amount of emotional torment with the showdown with my favorite demon Jinmen. Not only did he take over Akira's father but he also devoured his mother as well adding her tormented face to his shell, forcing Akira to kill both of his parents in one brutally fell swoop in order to take down Jinmen. All in all, Devilman Crybaby is unbelievably spectacular and gets me even more hyped for what may come in the franchise's (hopefully not too distant) future.

      Michael Mantini Hopefully the success of Crybaby sees a reboot of Devilman Lady. I had never seen anything Devilman until Crybaby and I gotta say I really love this adaptation/reboot. From my understanding Devilman Lady was a continuation of the original Devilman's story. Hopefully this means Crybaby Season 2 in which they adapt Lady?

    • @michaelmantini1207
      @michaelmantini1207 6 лет назад +2

      You are correct in that the universe of Devilman Lady takes place in the same one as Devilman after God and the angel army wipe out existence again in the same way Satan explained in the manga and show. Seeing a more faithful adaptation of Devilman Lady (the one they made was so far from the source it isn't even funny) to follow Crybaby in both animation and tone within the coming decade would be amazing beyond belief. But I do highly recommend reading Devilman Lady if you enjoyed Crybaby and the manga, seeing the new fresh things blend with the nostalgia of the old series is satisfying in a great way.

      Who is Zennon exactly (random question I know but you seem like a big devilman fan), we got a glimpse of him in Crybaby but obviously Crybaby had to adhere to time limit restrictions. The wiki is pretty vague about him, is he of greater status than Amon?

    • @alphaetikarad6092
      @alphaetikarad6092 6 лет назад

      KaiserzRul3 the anime made it pretty clear that the only one above Amon was Satan, with God being above him.

    • @michaelmantini1207
      @michaelmantini1207 6 лет назад +1

      KaiserzRul3 No problem at all. anything for a fellow fan. Zennon is a high ranking demon who was appointed command of the demons in hell while Satan and Psycho Jenny were on earth. He was a bigger presence in the manga, making a global declaration of war to whip up the humans' paranoia even more. Also, he and Amon were often compared as equals in some cases while others stated that Zennon held a higher rank then Amon. This isn't really explored upon due to Amon and Zennon never having a chance to duke it out in the manga, but with how Akira reacts after Zennon's declaration it's heavily implied that it'll be the bloodiest battle he would ever encounter had Satan not returned when he did. But even though he wasn't as flushed out in Crybaby, it was still incredibly satisfying to see Zennon and Devilman fight in such a way that Devilman was left too injured to make it back in time Miki.

    I love the intro so much!
    Each time I watched it, I connected something to a character, mainly trying to figure out who belonged to each ink blot.
    I didn't catch much of the more subtle religious themes from the imagery (because I know next to nothing about it all) but I cottoned on to a certain character's true identity from an early stage. Or at least 'what' they are rather than 'who'.
    Thanks for presenting the op in this way! I appreciate it more now!

    But when I watch it again after finished final episode I absolutely love it.

    Covering crybaby, then promoting fire punch, the predecessor to chainsaw man, which has quite a few similarities with devilman.
