I will say this. The Synchro Dimension having a different form of oppression from Neo Domino is interesting. Neo Domino's oppression was a strict caste system, where Satellite inhabitants were basically forced to accept there was no vertical movement. The Synchro Dimension, or City I guess, gives a false sense of hope. They use Jack as an example of vertical movement to make the Commons more complacent with the system. I just fond that interesting

While I agree it was an interesting take on the 5D's original Caste System storyline, it unfortunately lost a Lot in the way the Main Cast was treated by the Writer's.
In the Friendship Cup, Gong lost to Crow not because Horgan had the better Deck(I've ran both Deck's through over 200 AI Simulations and I can say for a certainty that Crow losses in all but 50 games), but because of the Nostalgia pop going on. And what makes it funny is that they couldn't even get that right as Crow wasn't acting in the way he used(even if Jack had abandoned him in The Commons, what happened to Martha's Orphanage and his "kids"?!)....

I think the weirdest handicap the season gave itself was having the losers go into the minefield.
It created a scenario where losing is actually harmful to the story as why would the Council send the literal best defenders the city could get from Academia.
The Obelisk Force could have overran the Synchro Dimension like it did the XYZ dimension. The only person who stood a chance was Sergei who was Roger’s man.
They could have made a better dichotomy of the Council deciding, “will we side with Academia and offer them the Lancers or will we acknowledge the Lancer’s strength and fight Academia with them.”

    • @yuutaruu4242
      @yuutaruu4242 2 года назад +8

As an extend to Casswury's response: the council didn't seem to believe Reiji from the get go about the invasion stuff, which is why they give the lukewarm condition that if any of the lancers win the cup, they may cooperate in "whatever" Reiji wants.

I think the point the synchro arc went downhill (to me) was Yuzu vs Sergei (I think his name was), where she hedged her bets on Bloom Prima, when Bloom Diva absolutely *could* have won the duel. And she then became just another damsel in distress from that point on in the rest of the series.
This all being said, I had an overall positive experience in the arc personally (jack vs yuya and whatnot), and I'm excited to see how you (and others in this comment section) feel about the arc in an analytical sense.

    • @BloomBox36
      @BloomBox36 2 года назад +13

I actually analyzed that duel due to the perception. My final verdict was... Maaaaaybe she would have won. Bloom Prima was actually a sound idea on paper as her monsters were stuck in thorn bondage, unable to attack or change position, and would have burned Yuzu at the end of her turn. Bloom Prima is the only Melodious fusion (that we know of...) that can be formed with more than 2 materials. Bloom Diva would leave 1 of the melodious monsters (most likely Mozarta) out in the open. Sergey could just have attacked her and swung for game since he needs less atk points on his Fusion monster to do the job due to the burn. THEN AGAIN, would he do this? Since it's implied he's going off, there's a possibility he would attack Bloom Diva instead to see as many ladies bound in thorns as possible, rather than consider her previously shown effect. Still, Bloom Prima got Yamcha'd and it has to be the worst ace monster debut I've ever seen.

Man the worst victim of the Synchro Arc’s terrible writing to me was definitely Yuya. He went from a complex character suffering from anxiety and inferiority issues to the Patreon Saint of Smiles who just thinks saying Egao and thinking of Yuto will fix any issue.
The last good moment of Yuya was during his duel with the Sector Security guard in the Friendship Cup where he duels like Z-Arc and immediately is dejected by the crowds approval.

I think yuya was one of the best in my opinion as he directly opposes the rules that the synchro dimension enforce, and it's seen most obviously by the contrast of yuya and the firendship cup commentator. I think crow was the worst in the synchro arc as he constantly flip-flops between ally and enemy as soon as yuya makes one little mistake, I think this arc is only the second worst as the xyz arc felt underwhelming considering this was supposed to be where duel academy first attacked and it had been built up throughout the series, but it's more focused on legacy characters and duel academy

Longevity was a huge factor in the downfall of this arc plus the concept seriously going from one tournament arc to another was not a good idea in hindsight if i were to restructure the episode count for each arc I'd give
20 episodes for each dimension making up (80/148 episodes)
20 episodes for the z-arc and ray arc (100/148 episodes)
20 episodes for the restoration of the yu boys and bracelet girls (120/148 episodes) *yes I'll have an entire arc about them they deserved better*
15 episodes for the pendulum dimension (135/148 episodes
5 episodes for the yusho vs yuya duel (140/148 episodes)
8 episodes for the epilogue (148/148 episodes)
Oops this became sort of a tangent okay if i were to restructure the synchro arc I'd probably not have that sector security vs yuya duel and have Yuzu win her duel against Sergey plus have Yuri remain a mysterious figure throughout the arc or just not appear again until the fusion arc

I never truly realized just how many "bad" episodes were written by the same writer, despite how much Yugioh I've watched. Certain episodes always felt like they were written by somebody else, who didn't really understand the characters they were using, like when Bronk gets mad at Yuma (twice) in season 1 of Zexal. Those episodes were both written by the same guy, and the tonal shift compared to the previous episodes was noticeable, but until I looked it up, I hadn't realized that they were in fact, completely different people writing episodes for this show.

I would like to add a few things here. The Lancers are a complete joke.
-Why did Reiji think Sawatari was a good pick to be a Lancer? The guy was barely any good before he got Pendulums, and if we include the questionable things he did, he would not be a good pick. Not to mention, he lost in the FIRST ROUND! If we were going to add back members who already lost in the tournament, then that makes the reason for the tournament completely obselete since Reiji could just handpicked themselves, and that's not even counting the fact that only half of the Lancers are from Standard, two of them being Reiji's choice. I would have personally loved to see some characters returning such as Masumi (Hokuto was carded and Yaiba was hospitalized, so they couldn't join) and considering how she knows Fusion, she was already better than Sawatari. Just imagine her with Fusion!
-One of the advantages the Lancers have is the Pendulum cards and Action cards. Then why did Reiji give Dennis a full deck of Pendulum cards when he knows he is a spy and had Gongenzaka on his team? Ya know, the guy WHO DOESN'T USE SPELLS IN HIS DECK! He was basically giving the enemy more ammo to work against them! Not to mention, with the exception of Yuya Sawatari and Dennis, the others only have like, two Pendulum cards in their decks! I know that adding too many Pendulums could have thrown the balance off the deck, but instead of Reiji making Dennis Deck full Pendulum, he could have made way more Pendulum cards for the others.
-And some big team this is, in the first round of the Friendship Cup, 5 out of the 8 Lancers either lose or don't participate at all.
Second of all, who is the antagonist in this arc? Roget? The Council? The entire Synchro Dimension? They keep jumping back and forth between antagonists and none of the supposed conflicts are resolved.
The final duel between Jack and Yuya while Duel-wise is amazing and one of my favourites, story-wise it doesn't make sense. So yes, it has been stated before that Duels are the only thing uniting/keeping the City together, hence why when Jack duels, everyone is captivated by it, even if the Commons all bitch about it later on. I still don't understand how Yuya and Jack Duel just supposedly united everyone and made everyone come together to fight Roget. Like, did the Commons just decided to forget the oppression they suffered for years? Did the Council just decided the way they were thinking was wrong? Did the Tops suddenly decide they weren't superior to everyone else? None of this is explained and they just moved past it and make Roget the final villain with the worst conclusion i have ever seen.
And im not even going to address the huge dump of character development characters like Yuzu got. Seriously, her duel with Sergey is THE LAST FULL DUEL SHE HAS! SHE DOESN'T DUEL FOR THE REST OF THE SERIES! Correction... SHE DOESN'T DO JACKSHIT FOR THE REST OF THE SERIES!
That said, i feel the need to defend a few things here.
-Just because Reiji could just bust out, doesn't mean he should. Like you stated time and time again, they are in a war, which means Reiji needs to gain as much comrades as possible. Unlike most characters in Arc-V, Reiji thinks things logically and knows that if he did anything to upset the council he would lose a Dimension as an ally. That said, given how the Council only seems to care about themselves (they literally stated the City would fall if they disappeared, like they are the pillar of the society) and doesn't give two shits about the City, i would question of Reiji just didn't go to Jack Atlas instead.
-At first, Sora didn't betray Academia. He was still loyal to Academia and was still going to complete his mission and retrieve Serena. However, he was now loyal to his friends and didn't want to hurt them, hence why he saved Yuzu. He said that if the Lancers give up Serena, he could talk with Professor and have him back off Yuzu. Yuya obviously disagrees and i think he manages to convince Sora to defect from Academia. I think that's how the conversation went since it's been a while.
-Reira sudden fear doesn't seem too farfetched. Don't forget, he comes from a nation that was in war. Obviously, he would have some sort of PTSD. It probably didn't surface due to him not being in battle for too long, but as the fight progressed, more and more of his mental state would go down, making him relive horrible memories.
P.S: Any chance you might do one in regards to the other arcs? I would like to see your input on that.

I mean with Gong, the use of pendulums gives ways into his synchros and essentially gives him continuous spells that don’t interfere with the No S/T style of his deck. Like ZeXaL, for example, they keep showing episodes all the way to the world duel Carnival and go back in an endless loop despite ZeXaL having more seasons and arcade to show, hell I don't even think Nick got to the faker duel.
I swear Nick had this weird thing with anime

First off... HOLY SHIT, HE'S BACK!?
Second... I dunno if I ever said this about Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V but in retrospect, this particular series was always too ambitious for its own good.
And you only have to look at the first part and the Miami Championships 🏆 There was a LOT being put into place, different characters like Shun & Yuto from XYZ, Serena from FUSION, and Yugo (NOT YUUUGO) from Synchro appearing. Reiji setting up this tournament for some big purpose.
There was also just a variety of duelists with very interesting new archetypes and some callbacks too. I honestly look back at this portion of ARC-V and think:
_How did we ever think that this could ever be topped with the same level of consistency?_
People might have complaints about situations like with the Battle Beast... But I'd argue that he wouldn't be _as_ ontroversial if the Synchro Arc didn't eat up SO MUCH of the run time and suddenly "Oh uh, we're running out of time!" And the production issues only exasperated the... Well ... _ISSUES_ XD
Also, RAY (not Sky Striker Ace _Raye_ kekw) is one of the biggest disappointments in Yu-Gi-Oh! history... Man, I REALLY hate how the Bracelet Girls (and even the Yu Boy's) were treated.

I think the reason arc v is my favourite Yu-Gi-Oh us because it is too ambitious, I much prefer this compared to vrains and sevens which are just mediocre (aside from the new mechanics that they introduced). The characters and decks in arc v are also very solid such as yuya's Odd eyes/Performapal deck or yuto's phantom knights

    • @YuseiTheSynchroHero
      @YuseiTheSynchroHero 2 года назад +8

@@benjoman8252 I can't speak on Sevens much (I do know that the female characters like Romin are treated MUCH better than others in the past) but Vrains imo had loads of potential but MAN... It's not just the last season that left people wanting but so much unfinished story beats.
ARC-V isn't my all time favorite in the series because of just how messy the series became but damn, the characters are ADORED to this day.
Serena/Celina is my second favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! girl of all time and I still carry and play Lunalight since 2016's Shining Victories. I even do her Fusion hand gesture when I perform the Fusion Summons. ✊
Fans LOVE Sora and his Fluffal/Frightfurs (they fit together like a glove), Shun/Shay and his rebellious dark birds of prey Raidraptors, and heck... Someone out there must love Shingo and his Yosenju and Abyss Actors. XD
I just wish the story wasn't so all over the place. At times, it just felt LOST and/or was paced awkwardly at time. And the less I have to talk about the ending... Yeaaaah.
But damn, it's truly a blessing AND a curse for ARC-V.
Oh yeah, I forgot everyone's favorite quote from Princess Peach Yuzu/Zuzu: *YUYAAAAAAAA!!*

I felt the Synchro Arc could have still been Social Class Division but with the Fusion dimension still involved. An example, Roger and a few Upper Class people have Obelisk forces on their side yet keep the other Upper Class members from Rebelling against Akaba's forces. Yet, some of the Upper class are funding the lower level duelist to fight back against this nee threat with Jack holding the Flag. Would kept with the theme of Arc V and actual progression with the Synchron Dimension fully joining the Base Dimension forces.

One of the worst arcs in Yu-Gi-Oh, ruined by pacing and production issues caused by working on DSOD simultaneously.
Ironically it had one of the single best Synchro Summons ever, that of Tyrant Red Dragon Archfiend (in Japanese, dub fucking ruined it). And most badass rescue entrance ever with Crow swopping in with a goddamn thunderclap and lighting bolt summoning his ace at the beginning of the arc.
Also, I wonder if ARC V was meant to be longer, and each dimension story was intended to be like the Syncrho Dimension, building up legacy and new characters while making a recapture in Xyz, and full on invasion in Fusion.
And the greatest flex in Yu-Gi-Oh. Reiji's infinite loop against Roget.

Aw Yugioh arc v, the series with an amazing opening arc & then… well great video on the topic!
When I watched arc v first time around, I grew to loathe the synchro arc. It went on way too long & the lancers… the Lancers aren’t a group. Had it not been for Moonshadow they would have screwed like 3 times over & it’s crazy to think he never got a win (at least I don’t remember him ever winning).
I HATE how Shinji was so stupid in believing Yuya was somehow working for Rogeat (idk how to spell his name). Shinji felt like a yusei proxy but a million times worse.
The synchro arc just felt like it had no goal and was heading nowhere . It had good moments, I really liked the end of yugo vs slyvio , slyvio seeing the parallels between yugo & yuya. Having already experienced and lost to another Yu boy in yuto it was really cool. But then there’s a bunch of filler & no end goal

Honestly the best way to fix synchro arc is just make it shorter we don't need the team separation stuff or the tournament cut either of those make fusion the predominate treat instead of the class war bullshit I'd also just have the lancers as a team split in 2 one half goes to recruit synchro the other goes to support xyz so we have equal attention to both plot especially with the mole revelation and especially lose Jack and Crow they completely take over the show for no reason and derail the plot with their presences.

Though, while lame, I never really took offence to Sora just joining. From context, I just thought it was a huge misunderstanding behind the scenes. Academia wanted to capture Zuzu and then she vanished, making everyone think they succeeded. Sora did not like that development and went back to Fusion to inquire on what is the goal here. They had no idea what the heck he's talking about since they didn't catch her, but he would have thought that they are just lying because they are unwilling to disclose the info to him, so he says "Yeah no, this ain't right. I can't consider Academia allies after this mess".

I also enjoy a tournament setting because it gives multiple characters a chance to shine. Arc-V is a messier show than most any other Yugioh arc, and that is part of what continues to let it stand out from the rest. This arc was a speedbump.

  • @randyanderson6923

-_- This season is one of many reasons why I REALLY do not like Arc V.
They REALLY had a lot of potential with Yuya and Yuzu, but INSTEAD, the former gets reduced to "Egao" the character and the latter is reduced to a typical damsel in distress screaming Yuya EVERY 20 Seconds (That one hurts most because I was liking Yuzu's development into her own character and I have a soft spot for her archetype :)
    SO MUCH POTENTIAL.... but the writers just had to jump the shark ; . ;
    Or in Nostalgia Critic's words:
"Jumping the shark, coming back, shooting it in the balls, r#%^ng it, eating its flesh, consuming its soul, mounting its head on a wall, AND DOING THE SAME THING TO TWELVE MORE FUCKING SHARKS JUST TO BE SAFE"

Personally I don't think going through one dimension at a time was a bad idea. If the execution was done right then it would have worked with the Standard dimension being the setup & introduction to the invasion issue.
The Synchro dimension should have been about winning over a neutral dimension as an ally, the setting a little more serious/mature, & having the Friendship tournament serve as a continuation/conclusion to the interrupted Maimi tournament. Instead of dueling against unimportant side characters such as Shinji & his gang, duel chaser 227, or Chojiro they should have just limited it to Jack, Crow, Yugo, Sergey, Sora, & Barrett as the new contestants. It would have kept things more interesting & kept the plot moving.
The Xyz dimension should have been set as the beginning of the pushback against Academia & overall an even darker/serious tone to the series with some of the characters getting thinned out in the fight to liberate Heartland. They should have brought in the Hell Kaiser for that season arc as they were originally considering.
Finally the Fusion dimension would of course have been the final ultimate struggle where everyone (the lancers, synchro, & the xyz resistance) comes together in an Avengers End Game like fashion to have the final showdown against Academia.
In the amount of episodes that they were given it well could have worked if they had just dropped unimportant subplots such as the class division in the Synchro Dimension or the Lancers constantly being separated, and most importantly if they had kept the overall amount of characters introduced in each season to the utmost minimum then the seasons wouldn't have dragged out for so long as they originally did. I personally liked the bringing back of legacy characters from previous series and I wouldn't have changed that but minor side characters such as Shinji & his gang, Chojiro, all the kids in each season that served no purpose, the Doctor & the Battle Beast in the Fusion Dimension, ect. should have all been left out of the show in order to save time

Honestly, even in the first season of Arc-V you could see a lot of the issues that would codify the later arcs start to show up. The main reason why season 1 seems better is because it was the foundation, but it STILL chose to immediately sideline the interesting and well-received LDS characters and storm through a bunch of irrelevant and stupid duels (like the entire prelims segment which included the quiz duel), and one of the recurring sins of Arc-V of introducing a ton of boss monsters with no setup just to advertise the card game only for them to be completely forgotten after one use.
What we end up with in season 1 is a massive accumulation of SETUP but the arc itself is not really much special, the quality of Arc-V season 1 is kind of reliant on the setup leading to a worthwhile payoff. Synchro arc was just when the chickens started to roost and the issues that were building up started snowballing.

I'm a child of the 80's and 90's, so I do have some Nostalgia for Jack, Crow, etc. But my main grip of the Synchro Dimension story is that it tossed all of the Lancer's character development in favor of Nostalgia. Gong's loss to Crow was absolutely an ignorant writers decision (the actual archetype's would state otherwise). It was purely Character Assassination at it's core...

With all due respect, while I do understand your opinion on why you believe the Synchro Dimension to be an awful arc, a long way back I decided to rewatch the specific arc all the way through as well, and while it had it's issues and contradictories, I thought the Arc was OVERALL fine. What mainly were the MORE noticable issues with ARC-V as a show, was near it's end and not the Synchro Dimension Arc. The stuff that happens in the Arc that you would consider stupid or unnecessary, was pretty much just for the purpose and sake of "plot". The reason why Reiji was stuck with the council members was because as a character, Reiji was definitely recognized as the most capable of all of the lancers, and was definitely the most overpowered at the time, and having him roam around the scene during the Friendship Cup, the arc would have probably ended pretty quickly, considering the viewer would be pretty confident in him resolving the issue of Michel Roger controlling the City in very quick fashion. He was pretty much confined within the council for "plot" and that's it really. As a writing decision, I do agree it is poor execution and I'm not trying to use that as an excuse or anything as to why that issue should slide, but of why it should be understood that it was to basically "nerf" Reiji over anything else. And of course with the contradictory of the writing staff with the different writers, THAT is really the main default as to why the arc had it's many issues and should be put to blame on the creative differences of the staff. Overall I just realize the spectacle of what makes the Synchro Dimension Arc pretty good, with it's societal division, the drama, action, exciting riding duels, animation, dark moments, it far surpasses any of the bad moments the arc may have had. Also in one of the comments, I noticed you replying to someone that the only Duel you that you had really found as a highlight was Enjoy Chojiro. And yeah again......while I can respect that opinion, to say it's the one of the few highlights? What about, Jack vs Sergey, Shun vs Dennis? Those seemed to be just as much worthy examples of great duels that happened during the Cup. Arc-V had it's flaws sure, but it is definitely the most ambitious out of any of the Yu-Gi-Oh series with it's unique concept, which had potential, and it's inclusion of Legacy characters. For now it's hard to even say if we will ever get a show like ARC-V again. It did not stick the landing in the end, but I still appreciate it to this day for what it was trying to do. You laid out the facts about the production of what went wrong, so that's a lot of credibility there, but in my personal opinion as an Arc, while me disregarding it's mistakes, the Synchro Dimension Arc was alot more fine than you think it was I believe.

I personally think you're being too hard on this arc. It has flaws yes, the Standard arc was defiantly better, but compared to the next two arcs, Synchro is still better than them. Here's how I view the four arcs of Arc V:
    Standard: Good arc.
Sychro: A decent arc, it has flaws, and there are things that could have been done better, especially around the ending parts, but still an okay enough arc.
Xyz: Had a decent start, but we wasted two episodes in the Fusion Dimension and the ending with Aster(Edo) convincing everyone else to switch sides made no sense and sucked, Aster himself changing sides made sense based on his character and his duels with Yusho in flashback and Yuya which legitimately convinced him to switch sides, but him being able to convince all the other troops so easily and quickly made no sense.
Fusion: The arc was shit. Now there were some good and decent moments with some fun duels, but those moments were usually eclipsed by the much large moments of terribleness and wasted potential, I mean really why bring in the Battle Beast to take down Lancers instead of either a returning GX character or Barrett getting to do it. Not to mention that Egyptian God awful ending.
Again, the Sychro arc does have problems, but it isn't as bad as those other arcs that came after it. For one this arc still let Zuzu(Yuzu) and Celina(Serena) have Duels and still let them being involved in the plot, whereas in the Xyz and Fusion arc they were either just damsels in distress or just mind-controlled and working for the bad guys. The Sychro arc still gave most of its cast stuff to do and decent Duels, but after it, the other arcs started seriously shafting characters, I mean Gong's last win was in the Sychro arc against Dennis and after that, he didn't get to do much. So for many characters, the Synchro arc is their last hooray, not the best hooray of course, but it's better than nothing which is what they get the next two arcs nothing. Also, I'd argue that the Lancer's need to participate in the Friendship Cup makes sense, as they both need to gain the peoples trust because the Synchro Dimension hasn't been invaded yet so they don't know about the war so the Lancers need to convince them and show the people they are indeed strong enough to fight with them, and they also need to confirm that there are enough strong Dduelists here to fight against Duel Academy so they have to Duel these people to test their skills, I mean the Lancers saw first hand during Standard how strong Duel Academy was with how they decimated so many Duelists and even pushed our heroes pretty far so they have to make sure the Duelists of Sychro are strong enough to fight others wise they won't last long. Now they don't have to do this for the Xyz arc because the war already came to Heartland so the people already know about the war and know they need help, and with Shay(Shun) on the Lancers he can vouch for the Lancers so they don't have to earn the peoples trust and can join forces right away, and the Lancers, in turn, don't have to test the skills of these Duelists because these are Duelists who have been fighting Duel Academy in war for a while, if they have survived this long that means they are either really skilled Duelists or just really great escape artists. So competing in the Friendship Cup makes sense. Now the tournament itself defiantly dragged on too long and could have been shorter, but its inclusion made logical sense.
I'd also argue that Sora's change of heart doesn't completely come out of nowhere, as he shows in his conversations with Yuya and later Zuzu(Yuzu) that he considers them his first real friends and wants to help them but also wants to remain loyal to the Fusion Dimension, but they eventually convice him that he has to choose a side which he does during the Yuya vs Crow Duel. Now it still could have been handled better, but I thought it was decent enough. Also, Declan(Reiji) waiting to act makes sense as he likes to feel the situation out, gather info, and wait for the right moment to make his move. Now he could have acted a bit sooner and he definitely should have left the Council Room the minute the Invasion of Sychro began to join in the battle and help his Lancers, but him waiting for a bit was still in character.
Overall, the Synchro arc, while flawed, still gave us some pretty cool Duels, managed to give all of its cast decent screen time and contribution to the plot, some decent character development for characters like Sora and Yuya, and really excellent character development for characters like Shay(Shun) and Riley(Reria). So it's still a decent arc, not just to me, but to several others since when people make Arc V Fanfiction rewrites to make the series better, they usually keep most of the Synchro arc the same, only changing things around the time of the Fusions Invasion of the Sychro Dimension, since that's when the arc really started to fall apart since the Lancers should have gotten back together than to work together to fend off the Obelisk Force and have some good character interactions, also Leo should have sent an actual army to invade Synchro and not just 20 Oblieks Force, Barrett, and Yuri. I mean seriously, Leo sends an entire army to invade Xyz, but only a hand full of troops for Standard and Synchro, really?

Which arc was that? The only arc I remember that was good in 5Ds was the signers’ arc. Otherwise, the anime pretty much fell down after that. Not to mention so many of the characters got sidelined (cough cough Aki). I hate how dirty she got done 😡

So there IS an out-of-universe explanation for Yuuya's mood swings doing the Synchro arc. One episode he was wallowing in absolute despair and hopelessness at the cruel reality in front of him, the other he is hopeful and optimistic and _[egao intensifies]_ , and then it just rinses and repeats constantly and continuously. I've always just chalked it to him fully embracing his status as a pendulum
