As a 19yr old engineering apprentice in the toolroom and development depts, I worked on developing such a system 50 yrs ago. Performance wise it was a great success and was shown on TV installed on a dumper truck climbing a near 45 degree incline. The trouble was no-one was prepared to pay for this vastly more expensive system when they were already happy with our gearboxes.

Never knew this. As a aircraft engineer, I thought they were exclusively for aircraft hydraulic pumps. Well, you learn something new everyday. Thanks RUclips

This is fantastic. I always wondered how they worked but never thought to look it up. A multi piston pump like a sanden compressor (rebuilt those for a living once upon a time) and the valve is part of the drive motor itself. Very cool!

Very nice. I've never understood why anyone would use such a "needlessly" complicated transmission, but when I see how easily it can be regulated with a simple swash plate, it all makes sense.

Thanks for the video. Just so happened the last time I mowed my lawn with my 1330 Cub Cadet which has Hydro I could not figure out why my reverse all of a sudden was going so slow. After watching this and knowing now how it works, I found the problem straight away. The drive lever was bent not allowing it to go full reverse. FIXED!

Honda has used hydraulic CVT's in their ATV's (Hondamatic), and in one of their motorcycles (HFT).

Always wondered how this transmission system would work in a car, heard that BMC tested HST / H-CVT in an Austin A35 and Mini as well as investigated for the Austin 1100 with suggestions that a thoroughly developed HST system would likely rival or even become bigger than DAF's own Variomatic CVT system.

Efficency issue is through heat loss in fluid. The more turbulent the flow, the more loss. Turbulent defined by force acted on fluid over time (power) and geometry of space through which it flows.

Because turbine have slip and would be inefficient for slow speed power transmission. This system uses a positive displacement pump that is very efficient at these speeds.

When the arm is perpendicular, the speed is zero. When the arm is all the way forward or backward, then the speed will be maximum in one or in the other direction. However, I spent so much time to adjust speed in between, between zero and maximum, but I failed. Please look at my variable displacement piston pump to see, these speed changes changes. Or look at my Hydraulic transmission animation for symbolic representation of this circuit.

Water is a corrosive substance and does not have lubricating effect. The oil molecules structured such that they adhere surface of the piston and cylinders. This creates surface coatings which enable the piston slide inside the cylinder. Water does not have this property. Dip your hand into a bucket full of water and take it out and wait a couple of minutes, no trace of water will be on your hand. Do the same thing with olive oil; unless you wash your hand with soap it is very discomforting.

Great animation.. much much easier to understand.. ^^ keep on the good work.. btw.. can i use this animation to show to my classmate for learning purpose?
