I recommend sennelier's green for oil thinner it's completely safe ( you can even take it on the plane) and you don't actually need that great ventilation. I also got mine, a 100 ml bottle for about 8 bucks. They also sell medium and a few other things on that line

There are odorless thinners and solvents available for oil painting. Also, Holbein makes an incredible line of water soluble oil paints! They’re called Duo and are in every way just like regular oils, and can be used in conjunction with them, but clean up with water! I love them!
Oils all the way! 💗 I really enjoyed this video (basically every video of yours) ~ if someone is hesitant about using oil because of toxic solvents, I'd suggest Gamblin brand oils. They are expensive, though. They do have a slightly more affordable line, 1980 line, that is still better for you than most other oils and is still cheaper :)
I've just recently tried out acrylics, and after using oils I just can't come to grips with them at all. I tried painting a poppy and the colours just seemed way too dull, so I painted over the poppy in oils and the colours are lovely.
I'm getting more into painting as a hobby since I've noticed how it helps me calm down, and let my frustration go. Right I'm starting with acrylics cause I'm just practicing getting started. Once I see myself getting use to it I'll try oils since is a bit more "advanced".

I’ve been binging acrylic vs oil videos, and it’s really cool see everyone’s opinions. Some people swear by oils, some only use acrylic and others use both!
I have always just mixed both. I may sound psycho, but i have been used to mixing acrylic and oil into the same paintings, and into the same color mixes.
I usually paint with acrylics but recently tried water mixable oils and oils. I really loved the vibrancy of the colours with the oil, they really pop out and make a huge difference in your painting. I like how they take longer to dry, and I love how they blend. They are definitely more work when it comes to clean up.
I paint in acrylics and they are way more vibrant than any oil paints ive ever used. I also mix little bits of gloss medium with every colour as i use them.
Hi Katie! I love your work! This video was very helpful in making my decision to stick with acrylics for now. I have also found that by adding gel mediums to my acrylics one can achieve that vividness and brilliance as oils give. Also, there are very buttery creamy heavy bodied acrylics available which I love to play with by using those mediums I talked about. Now, with that said, in the future (retirement), and when I have a dedicated space for oils, I'd really like to try my hand at these. I'm just starting to dabble in watercolor right now, so oils will be next, I imagine! ;) Thank you so much for sharing!
Can i ask you if it is really okay to mix the gel medium with acrylics and paint? Bcs i thought you were only allowed to add the gel medium after the painting dried up?
Thank you very much for this video. I recently have decided to take up painting because I'm disabled with a lung disease. I have been curious about oil. I have been painting with Acrylic. So this video just saved me from potential health issue, disappointment and waste of money. THANK YOU!!! Very much!
I like to paint my canvases pretty fast, I start and finish on the same day, therefore when I tried to use oil instead of acrylic it was a total failure... The waiting time was driving me crazy!
Michelle T in oil paints you Can Apply the layers „wet on wet” and the colors will not mix unless you take a brush and really try to blend them. A great example of „wet on wet” method is Bob Ross.
This was very well done. I think you focused on what was important for people wondering which would they would like better. For me, the choice is oils, hands down. I live in a tropical climate where even oil paint dries fairly quickly, so acrylics just dry way too fast. I also love the look and feel of oils and being able to take my time and play with the paint while it's wet is something I can only really get from oil painting. I just love how versatile it is.
Great video. I haven't used oils in so long, lmao. I remember painting this huge lightning bolt with oils, easily the best thing I've ever painted to this day, but for the actual process of work, I think I still prefer to use acrylic. The extra chemicals make me massively uncomfortable to be honest, and I'm a bit of a neat freak. Combine that with my trait of wanting to finish whatever I'm working on in one sitting, and the idea of letting an incomplete painting sit for days just to DRY drives me nuts.
I know this is a semi old video, but I personally like oils better. I started off with apple barrel acrylics from Walmart. Which were nice! But I had no background information and I was getting very discouraged when the painting didn't turn out how I wanted it to. I moved on to oils and honestly I'm comfortable and 100 % attached to it. When I was using acrylics everyone seemed to be very biased against oils. In order, my comfort with mediums would be oils, watercolor, acrylic. I took classes in oils and I just feel comfortable and almost like a "professional" in a sense! I love your videos and I appreciate your time and dedication!!-- The Criispyart
Gamasol has been the biggest game changer for me. I remember when I used to paint with turpentine in college, the fumes would literally get me almost high lol. I feel like gamasol is the friendliest paint thinner out there. I actually use it as my medium at this point. I used to use galkyd and liquin but now if I want that glossy finish, I will just use varnish.
I’m new to painting started in January and I’m loving it so much! I’ve used water colour it was ok I’ve used acrylic and love the fact you can start and finish a painting in a day💜 I am also testing myself with oils now the only thing is I’m impatient and want it to dry quicker so I’m using liquin & a gloss fast dry medium... Any more tips on oil painting Katie would be gratefully received Thanku ☺️
Thanks Katie for your help, I was trying to figure out what to start with as a first go and acrylic it will be then! As no designated area for painting and no weeks in front of me between 2 layers!
I started painting about ten years ago with oils. I tried acrylic but didn't like it as much. You are right about the colors being more vivid etc. However, like you said I still want to paint but cannot afford the oil paints and simply don't have the space to do it. I am therefore going to try my hand at acrylics, and make an honest attempt. Thank you for the demonstration. It was very informative.
Acrylic is vibrant too, I've seen oil painting and acrylic in it's drying stage and they both look great, I believe your more in favor to oil paint. So both mediums are great depending on your wallet and your space as you said.
very helpful, thank you! I was thinking of trying oils, but winter is near and I paint in my home, so i'll wait till spring when i can open the windows and doors. i use acrylics, and you're right, they do dry quickly, which makes mixing and blending a bit of negative when using them.
Hallo Katie, thank you so much for the short but to the point comparison, it really made me think to try it out soon, I mean, working with oils, though I need to get my basics for water color and acrylics right before embarking on the oil journey - thanks again and have a nice evening 🙏
I love the affordability of acrylics and that they are so mistake friendly since you can just pop out a hair dryer for a couple of minutes and just paint over it. It honestly bothers me how dull the colors are, though. The annoyance of the paints drying WHILE you're mixing is easily solved with flow retardant but nothing really helps with the colors appearing flat. I want to try oils but I'm intimidated by how quickly your mixing can turn to mud, the fumes, and the cost.
Oh wow your very first point on acrylics has cleared up allot of confusion i have been having, completely new to painting and have been following an acrylic tutorial that i now realise has been using oils, thats why my stuff dries so damn fast and is hard to mix! This was an excellent breakdown. I love all the pros of oil paint but the cons are what turn me off of wanting to work with them. I tried working with oil and also found it messy; took too long to dry... and was really difficult for me to paint with. Acrylic suit me best (even though I live in a tropical climate). However, I love your tip on using a gloss varnish over it to make the colours stand out more but I wish there was a way to get that "buttery" texture, too. Great video. Thanks. 👍👍👍
I also like painting in acrylics. I know that they dry fast and may darken later but if I use lots of white I am happy with its outcome. Colours are saturated ( intensity of colour) in comparison with watercolour and gouache that is why it is my favourite medium.
Ok thanks, all the relevant points I think. I need to paint an outdoor wooden door, and I want to make a full door Bob Ross type landscape, sunset, water reflections and all, plus paint a a rose garland around the door frame. What I hear you say is I must go with acrylics, because the oil will take too long to dry for an outdoor door in a public area, right?
Thank you for this amazing video ☀️ I think I’m gonna try oil paint soon. I always do portraits and trying to blend skin tones with acrylics is so frustrating
I have just started patining in Acrylics and I must say that if you are starting in Acrylics, get a professional acrylic product like winsor&newton professional acrylics they are more expensive but worth every penny. The lower grade acrylics in my opinion are not worth the frustration if you are serious about learning to paint professionally or are going to sell your paintings later on or simply want them to last. The lower grade paints just don't have the vibrancy or consistency especially if you are painting impasto or want to get oil-like results. Acrylics can also be used like water color which is a bonus. Also a wet palette is essential for acrylics because they can dry quickly. I recommend getting good high quality Acrylic brushes though because oil brushes don't last long with water over time. The acrylic medium gel is great for adding to paint to get more transparent results as well as extending the drying times. The good news is you can make a wet palette yourself fairly easily from the dollar store! Hope that helps someone.
Thank you for this video. Tbh ot was a video a beginner needs before start buying supplies and stuff. This video was like a proper guide for me. It might differ for some. But thank you !!!
To start, I love your vids! =) I started painting with oils, but started having serious allergic reactions to either linseed oil or turpentine. I'm still not sure which one it was, but it is something to keep in mind with oils. If you're a particularly sensitive person, you might want to test it out before investing too much money. I switched to acrylic and that fixed my issue. I think someone else pointed out that you can add retardant to acrylic and it does add some drying time, which is nice. But I do love the fast dry time of acrylics. But yeah, oils are very nice too, if you can paint with them. =)
I primarily have used water color and acrylic but agree with flatness of acrylic ...just started with Holbein Duo water soluble oils - can thin them just with water. no toxic smell. so far really like them but I'm trying to get the feel for oils after so much time with acrylics - you have to really think about think about putting paint down differently when you're used to layering acrylics
Smashing video, Katie. I'd love to have a try with oils. Did do a small snow scene a few years ago. But would like to crack open the new set I bought ages ago... maybe one day...🎨👩🏼🎨. Love your little dance at the end..💃🐶🐾
I'd be interested to know your thought on water mixable oils and the new interactive acrylics. This was really helpful, especially for those of us with asthma, or other breathing challenges. Thank you!
Thanks! This really helps. I paint with acrylics, but was thinking about trying oils. I don't think I'll be doing that for now given that I don't really have a studio to work in, just a small room in our house and I have kids runing around. Maybe one day when the kids move out or something, but for now I'm sticking with acrylics :) Btw love your videos, you've got a new subscriber.
I've been working with Windsor and Newton watercolour tubes lately and honestly, I love how different all my paintings turn out lol. Would definitely like to try oil, but I'd have to save up for it! Nice video, Katie. 😊 🌹
i like to use acrylics to do more stylized work, since it's not all that blendable (especially since im still pretty new to painting) and i use oil if im attempting to do realism since it's more blendable and the colors match the reference better uwu
Hi Katie if you have issues with the solvents have you ever though about giving water mixable oil a go. They are much the same as oil paints you can do all the same techniques but you use water as the thinner.
Hi Katie.. you make amazing videos! They are very helpful. I have one question (may not be related to this particular video). How do you decide that a painting is finished? I often find myself confused as to when to stop 🤔
thanks for the video I'm waiting artist vlog from you! I prefer oils because of rich colour, more saturation, dense and if you do mistake you can fix easily :)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there is also solvent-free oil painting where you don't need solvents and mineral spirits. I only started oil painting/testing oil paints out a few days ago and only used safflower oil and I think the painting I did turned out fine.
I buyed oil paint tubes instead of acrylic . Then I feeled bad. When I painted one painting it came out very good and also I realized oil paints are best but the only problem I have is it dries slowly . But I love them Also I am sad that I don't have acrylic 😞

Thanks. 👍👍👍
This was super informative. You are pleasant, direct, (very pretty) and not self-indulgent. Thank you so much.
You don't necessarily need to use solvents. I just use linseed oil because I do impasto work and mainly use a palette knife.
I also like painting in acrylics. I know that they dry fast and may darken later but if I use lots of white I am happy with its outcome. Colours are saturated ( intensity of colour) in comparison with watercolour and gouache that is why it is my favourite medium.
I am using oil water based I might want to try Acrylic paint. Thanks for the video.
I love my acrylics, I use mediums sometimes to delay the quick drying time.
Can i know what medium you used to slow it down?
great insights I may use a mask when using oil paints thanks youre awesome
Ok thanks, all the relevant points I think. I need to paint an outdoor wooden door, and I want to make a full door Bob Ross type landscape, sunset, water reflections and all, plus paint a a rose garland around the door frame. What I hear you say is I must go with acrylics, because the oil will take too long to dry for an outdoor door in a public area, right?
Painting all this while your voice is so soothing
Thank you for this amazing video ☀️ I think I’m gonna try oil paint soon. I always do portraits and trying to blend skin tones with acrylics is so frustrating
You are so bright buttery beautiful and talented. Thank you for a great explanation Katie 😍
This song is the waiting music when you're on hold with Social Services.
omg tysm this vidoe helped me so so much and I love how your helping us and taking your time making videos and helping us,your my favorite ilysm💖😭
THANK YOU FOR THIS INFORMATIVE VIDEO, IM CURRENTLY INSPIRED TO TRY PAINTING
This summer I decided to take an oil paints class, my teacher described it like clay. You can keep moving it around and sculpting it until it dries.
I'd be interested to know your thought on water mixable oils and the new interactive acrylics. This was really helpful, especially for those of us with asthma, or other breathing challenges. Thank you!
Your knowledge is helping me a lot keep it up.
There's a happy in between, and that is Water Mixable Oil Paints which, depending on the colors used, dries to the touch within a week.
Really informative, thank you so much❤❤
Thank you for taking the time to share.
Ooo lovely! I really fancy working with watercolour again soon 😊🙌🏻
You should definitely get back to it!
great video, answered questions I didn't know I had.
i like to use acrylics to do more stylized work, since it's not all that blendable (especially since im still pretty new to painting) and i use oil if im attempting to do realism since it's more blendable and the colors match the reference better uwu
Great video!! You mentioned the main points for both! I absolutely LOVE oil paints too!!
Hi Katie if you have issues with the solvents have you ever though about giving water mixable oil a go. They are much the same as oil paints you can do all the same techniques but you use water as the thinner.
Thanks Lee. I have tried them and don’t love them if I’m honest. I’m gonna make a whole video about them soon 😊
Will look out for that video will be interested in your thoughts and which brands you have used. At the moment I am experimenting with Cobra paints.
Thanks Katie 🙂it was very helpful to me ... Thank you....🙂
Thank you for your info, I really love your art! thanks for your tutorials as well!
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it 😄
Hi Katie.. you make amazing videos! They are very helpful. I have one question (may not be related to this particular video). How do you decide that a painting is finished? I often find myself confused as to when to stop 🤔
Terrific Information thank you. I have subscribed. Can oils be painted on paper or only cavas?
Great video, thanks for the explaination!
Which will you prefer for the best experience ?
Oil paints or Acrylic paints ?
And thanks for this video 😊
Omg I want that painting at 0:12 !! It's so beautiful
Thank you. I needed that explanation.
Yeah I want to tinker with oils, love acrylics but I've never used oils before though. Would love some further input on which route to go. Thx.
Hi Katie, just wondering if you could do a tutorial on (WSO) Water soluble oils?
Thanks for all of your wonderful videos 👏
Thank you. It was helpful.
Just seeing those lit candles next to that Oil Paint set up nearly gave me a stroke
thanks for the video I'm waiting artist vlog from you!
My favorite acrylic investment, hands down, is my Sta-Wet Palette
"Try not to get in on your skin"
Me who always accidentally puts it on my skin when I paint:👁👄👁
I buyed oil paint tubes instead of acrylic . Then I feeled bad. When I painted one painting it came out very good and also I realized oil paints are best but the only problem I have is it dries slowly . But I love them
Also I am sad that I don't have acrylic 😞
Your Video really helped me, thank you!
