You are a very efficient mechanic , a real professional . Wish you were here in Coffs Harbour, Australia 🙂. Thanks for posting this, now I know that there is no way I'll be doing this in my driveway with my crappy little tool kit....so it's off to the workshop....seems to be the second home for our VW Kamper and now our latest bus....more's the pity.
Owning anything these days requires upkeep / putting money into it. A house will need a new roof eventually, garden work, plumbing work etc. A car is no different, especially when it is 20+ years old. You can buy a brand new RV for $100k+... or own a little VW Camper and have more money left over (for some repairs). =)
dude thank you so much. i reversed polarity on a jump start a couple of months ago and after changing out the starter motor this is the next job on the cards. you make it look so easy
Thank you for this, I need to replace the wiring for the alternator after it burned. Do I have to remove alternator in order to pull the connector? It looks so to me ...
Yes, it's best to remove the alternator with the wiring... you might be able to remove the wiring with the alternator in place (belt & mounting bolts removed so you can move the alternator around)... but it will be much easier to work on when it is out of the vehicle. You can then also inspect other components (voltage regulator brushes and armature slip rings etc). Remember to disconnect the battery first!
Thanks for making the video. So far the sh**tiest job I have had to do on my bus has been the rear wheel bearings, however replacing the alternator is looking like a pretty yuckie job to do with lots of dismantling. How long did it take for you to get the alternator out?
Hey, what year bus is that? Do you know the Part # and AMP rating of the ALT? Note to self: at 8:29 top bracket on a bus is different than on the 914.... longer and anchors to the exhaust. Just what I needed to know. 8:08 is a good shot of it mounted.
Andrew Haben Thanks for the tip, I'm, sure my viewers will appreciate it! Send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll send you some of my youtube channel stickers as a thank you!
I guess you can't read the text in the video? What's the old saying... monkey see / monkey do? Remove what you have to remove... to remove what you want to remove. No video or commentary required.

Fuel injected, so I think 76 to 79.
How do you remove that cooling boot with that clip on the inside?
It's s spring clip... you just pop it out (if I remember correctly). The other end is held on by a clamp. Post a video so I can see what you see.
Great video, very informative. What is that part called at 7:48?
The metal shroud?
Yes, goes around the pully and the dip stick.
