I was looking up how to test these alternators and found this . 🆒 Some of these alternators had the external regulator, which is what I’m working on for a fella. I think the 74’s used these, not sure. These have a 3 prong plug connector on the alternator that goes to a solid state regulator. Wanted to confirm if the alternator was bad or just the regulator. And that distributor is what is called SVDA. Best distributor to use for these period. The 009’s are for industrial applications with guaranteed flat spot when revving off idle. I also put a Petronics ignition on mine that works great. The point systems are great too, but the new replacements are crap and the condensers are even worse.

Typical stock VWs have a generator and external regulator, starting around 73 and also available aftermarket are internal regulated alternators. Good info, thanks for sharing. No perfect distributors but you want to find the ones with vacuum and centrifugal advance for best chance to remedy the stumble during acceleration.

Great video. I know what you mean, not to jump into to conclusions. I replaced my old generator, but mine was indeed bad. Installed a new alternator kit conversion. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I have been working on a sound system I installed in the car. And a wire from the radio short on me so I had to fix the radio by soldering a new wire in the board. After I fixed that issue sound system is working perfect. But yesterday when I went to test drive the car for the first time in so many years, this alternator light is on and the car not charging. And we are talking about a brand spanking new alternator. I still have not figured out what is the issue . But like you said. I am doing a thorough inspection. I hope the alternator is not bad, it’s a nightmare replacing them when the engine is installed.

Yes seems to always be something. My brand new brake rotors from China can’t handle 90ft lbs on the lug bolts and all the holes stripped. Yay. I may do a video of the aftermath. Lol

Hello there! 15 years ago I bought a '68 Camper as my first car and ended up breaking it because I didn't know how to take care of things (dumb teenager syndrome). Now that I'm older and care about taking care of my things, I'd like to take a crack at fixing it and taking care of it this time. Would you happen to have any documentation or diagnostic stuff you could point me towards to figure out why my generator isn't charging my battery? I am interested in upgrading to an alternator like yours, but one thing at a time, I suppose. I did notice another comment mentioning a burnt bulb, so I figured I'd give it a try.
    In any, thanks!

I’m currently rebuilding a 69 Camper, I absolutely could help you diagnose your charging system, let me see what I can find for you. I could also give you a call to assist.

@@gggarageVW69 Appreciated! While I'm visiting we're trying to at least diagnose (I'm here for a week). It turns out this thing is in pretty sorry shape and we ran into a lot of problems. I think it's a bit much to type into a RUclips comment. Maybe I can grab an email address or something?

Good reminder ! I once had a problem but found that the bulb in the dash (#61 wire to speedo) was burnt out and therefore the circuit was open I.e. didn’t charge.

    Hi,
Do you still need a regulator with the alternator?
Because someone just by pass the regulator on my Bug
Should I put back the regulator?

No, alternator is internally regulated, you just wire across the old regulator.
