I like the term “ethical consumerism.” Here where I work, the corporate IT guys will literally DUMP 1 year old laptops that cost over $1000 that have plenty of life left in them... it’s actually shocking how wasteful society has become.
That's almost as bad as the demand for exotic foods and meats through advertising
They are just being good Capitalists.
Currently in the UK, the government are buying laptops to give to disadvantaged children so they can learn at home during the lockdown. This is Capitalism at its finest; using Public money to purchase goods/services from the Private sector.
A far better way of addressing this would be to ask people to donate old unwanted laptops and then supply these to the children instead. The downfall of this though, is no money is being spent in the Private sector and Capitalism is missing out.
Where do you work? Can you have them dump some laptops in my garbage can please?

I have a friend who, some years ago, embraced a "green" lifestyle. Since then he has become the most voracious consumer I know (whilst berating the rest of us to follow his "green" lead). Whenever I go to his house he shows me a veritable parade of newly purchased "green" gadgets, new books and items that he does not actually need but, genuinely, believes help fight climate change. Sadly I feel that he is indicative of the main problem of modern society.
There's a difference between prosperity and indulgence. The people of the world are being convinced that only when you indulge in every desire you have or can dream of, your life is futile. So you just have to get your hands on enough money, by hook or by crook and you can die happy after fulfilling every selfish desire. People that bought into this idea and there are a whole lot have created the selfish, unsympathetic, inhuman world we see. The media and advertising companies are willing handmaidens, blaring out lies and promotions. People with talent and real dreams go into depression at the way life has been turned into a sales counter.

consume was a priority but technology has changed we liive in asmall netflix world we get to see films which are low culture hi violence and we dont feel empaathy for the poor elon musk is a prime example of consumerism but like richard branson musk needs our adulation and he deserveds it but his rocketry is a wonderfull dream we need to dream for space travel to escape the incoming cometry disasterw we need hope for the future even if we run out of rocketfuel hallellullia brothers and sisters.

I've reduced my spending to only consumables this year: food, toiletries, stationary(only when I don't have anything left to use), cleaning product, and fertilizer.
I still have accumulated hoarded stuff in my house. Eliminating those responsibly without burdening others is a real challenge; so we tackle it one by one. This lecture affects my view so much.

Jonathon kindly signed my copy of his book 'Seeing Green' on 6/10/84. Sadly we appear to have made no progress with taming our endless desire for economic growth, or population growth. Will mankind learn to change it's way before it is too late?
I am an active member of Action For Happiness in Brighton, which demands that action be taken to end our desire for unlimited consumption and economic growth.

This is one of the most intelligent, sincere and convincing lectures I ever heard during my 60y lifetime.
Similarly great are George Monbiot‘s presentations.
I could have done with some more elaboration on the term of „evil“ apart from catholicism.
I completely agree with you, I like Mr. Monbiot's contribution to many points of this debate too. Another great source is Kevin Anderson, who has a slightly more specific point of view as a climate scientist, but very well-balanced and straightforward.
I think individual ethical action with more and more people buying less stuff and eating less meat is a big part of the solution. It will start with a small impact, but at some point a tipping point will be reached where: 1. The message starts to spread more quickly leading to mass change and action and based on this political parties with green policies gaining real influence; and 2. The economic impact of reducing consumption causes a recession leading to the adoption of new greener economics and politics.
longnewton1: I agree and work, subtly (I hope I'm subtle), on others to that end. Consumerism is madness as is all over consumption.
Watch a documentary called Earthling's enough to make the average person sick the absolute cruelty to the animals especially the pigs put me off but the average person doesn't want to know or says ugh don't want to know and that's human greed and pleasure I'm sure if people knew how these animals are treated they would become vegetarians like me

What a long time he takes to get there! But it's good to hear all this from a chap who said some years ago that capitalism is the only game in town. Imagining a different system where we just produce what we need and remain happy with that is as difficult as ever. The profit-making economic system forces everyone to make and sell more and more, doesn't it? No-one can imagine a system whereby it would be better to make and sell 80 widgets rather than 100, but that's what a rational, non-destructive economic system should support.
I was at a bookshop and by accident saw a book on the floor, which I picked up. I took a quick look at the reviews. It said if you have never read a book before. Read this. So I bought it. The name of book was A Short History of Progress by R Wright, a lecturer similar to yourself. In it, the same warnings you mention. I think this book, given in quite easy to understand examples, highlighting so much in common with your lecture. This book should be part of curriculum at schools of the right age, as it will open eyes of the dangers so well explained by you. This book made me aware so I always look for lectures etc similar to yours and have learnt a lot. Hope to see more lectures by you.

What I notice about everyone speaking in these malthusian terms is that the burden is on the people to change their ways and not as much the corporations and military industrial complex which are incentivized to create unsustainable production. Growth is not the problem, capitalism is. You can have net 0 production and consumption. Asking ordinary everyday working class to live below their means provides cover for the ruling class.

Absolute brilliant lecture! Me as a vegan/zero waste activist supports Ethical Consumption. I try to do my absolute best to leave a healthy planet for the next generation. I started already 15 years ago when green wasn't as cool as now, in my time I was considered a "wierdo" who doesn't eat meat or any animal products and only rides a bike (only using public transport) . I'm happy alot has changed and many people are making small changes in their lifes as well
@Veril Bijou well I try to buy only local food. No exotic food or food that stresses nature. Only local France bio food. In supermarkets I don't buy what is not produced in France. I try my best of course I'm not perfect.
Although subsumed under green consumerism here I think that One Planet Living could approach the idea of true sustainability.
Most „3 planet countries“ like in Europe will have to cut their consumption by two thirds, „5 planet countries“ like the US by 80%.
So that‘s a hell of a ride for inveterate western consumers. Easy going, however, for indigenous communities.
i would call it "ignorant" consumerism- where the cost of goods/activities do not represent the true cost.
You can’t recognise a lot of people are better off when 60% of the globe is living on less than $5 a day. The present situation is awful (Jason Hickel’s ‘The Divide) ....

Look into steady state economic models. It's the cure for so much of modern society's bullshit, of which market capitalism is to blame.
We are living very unhealthily, 1 in 2 people get Cancer, many more die from Heart Disease, 40k people die every year in UK from Air pollution. Fertility rates are dropping, Nuerological, Zoonotic Diseases etc.
Humanity: let's create economic and political systems with the goal of producing an ever-increasing number of people with an ever-increasing average consumption of natural capital.

Production. I met a couple of teens hanging out in Holytown with the look of boredom, perhaps hopelessness, nothingness. Why not grow tomatoes? No. A billboard announcing another golfing course. No jobs for bored teens. Why not tomatoes? Richard in Canada.
Why don't they ever turn up the volume?? Even with external speakers it's too low. His voice is sometimes fast and sometimes lowers to a mumble as though he's in a cafe talking to a few people.

I never got past the word itself: Consumer. Among all of the things we do in life, we're reduced to being a thing that consumes. It's not even accurate from a dispassionate, scientific point of view. We don't create nor consume so much as transform things.

addiction.. once colonised, people are forced into addiction some of us have ancestors who were ripped out of their relationships with each other (more recently than others still happening in Australia, Canada, The USA., Countries where people still live in the forests, lands, deserts, water, without electricity, metal, oil) .. ... because direct relationship with natural cycles, ecosystems, other animals and each other if left to grow and become familiar... like a healthy understanding (standing and being together) family who truly loves to be together sharing and communicating through to responsability (ablity to respond in health and trust) are what truly help us to feel and actually be happy, contented, truly aware, alive, healthy and wise. opposite of addiction is ... considered and loving conception, lots of loving mothers and fathers (all others in a healthy group) taking care of children, no shame or addiction around sex or nakedness unless it is to keep children safe... animals and their habitats respected, everyone belonging, having a home they can return to, whether that be having or being welcomed (back) to the womb, or a place or places, in addition, cultures which actually are borne of the places and people, not those forced from other places under ignorance about what is happening in the locale, for the locals learning from them so as to live with rather than against.. and so on... Humans are more and more unformed, more damned up, fearful, and pretending otherwise... LEARN FROM CHILDREN< ANIMALS PEOPLE NOT COLONISED.... just be with them and learn... and stop interrupting and trying to teach them!

I think the only way out of this problem is to advance our technology. This is an irreducible problem.
So far, many of our green solutions are pipe dreams at best or downright wasteful at worst. When the green activist contingent drops the idea wind mills and solar panels are the path forward, the more energy we can expend on real solutions.
I liked the lecture tho im not sure of newer generations will stand up to consumerism. and I think its mainly because of social media. and it shifts fastly from text based to visual based. when this was uploaded tik tok wasnt even a thing, but tiktok and entertainments/platforms like that goes hand in hand with consumerism. and it is very visible among younger generation. and honestly you can get away without hearing about climate change very well. noone watches news, esp younger generation. they live in their own social media bubbles.
It's already starting. This generation of young folks really seem done with what the world is becoming, and I feel like so e change is soon. Not sure what though.
Isn't it wonderful to have these people that want to tell you what to do!

Which billions adopted a consumerist modeled economy and got longer lives, healthcare and a collective better standard of living...cos they can buy the latest fkn Nikes?

When Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations double-entry accounting was 400 years old. Smith did not suggest mandatory accounting in the schools but at the time 50% of the English people were illiterate. The suggestion would hardly have made sense.
But why hasn't it been mandatory in our high schools since the 1960s? With all of the blather about education, when do educators or economists suggest something so obvious? Are our schools designed to produce dumb workers and stupid consumers? If everyone concentrated on Net Worth how different would the economy be?
A Swedish Socialist who claimed to be a high school teacher told me that he objected to the idea on the grounds that the math would make Capitalism seem logical. Ignorance is necessary to maintain ideologies.
Perhaps, folks might prefer the word "sin", rather than "evil", to describe the spiritually untethered nature of materialism/consumerism or the worship of the "god" in the commodified material world, rather than the one true God in all things and all of us. "Sin" is simply our state of separation from God, as well struggle for survival in a massively overpopulated "built" world so utterly alienated from Nature and all of Her many manifestations. Consumerism is a celebration of sin. Stress R Us

In the US people are changing. People are becoming educated and more careful. Also there is an addictive part of consuming things… but because of price.. that’s changing too. Calling consumption evil is not constructive and starts that evil construct of pitting groups against one another.. Consuming and capitalism pushes technology… that’s why so much stuff comes out of the US. But it must be useful in some way or people around the world wouldn’t also demand it. Hopefully technology and becoming aware will solve our over consumption. However it’s not a new problem….. the biblical Adam fell…. He had ‘everything’ also in his perfect Eden ….but a big human flaw is to always want more… it’s in our DNA…..

Don’t blame population, when we are ( unnecessarily) breeding and eating 70 billion animals every year, that use 1/3 of the earths (Ice Free) land mass. Also all the big environmental and social problems were/are caused by the resource intensive meat based, throwaway consumer lifestyles of a minority of people who live in wealthy countries!. I can see why you want to talk about Consumerism rather than Consumption, just like population. You are othering the problem so people don’t have to feel so quilty about their Consumerism! Jonathan Porriit tried to sabotage the Green Party with Green2000( in mid 80’s), now he is sabotaging the need for Lifestyle change!
