Shin Kamen Rider: The Japanese adaptation of The Fly. They could just redistribute it worldwide as "The Grasshopper."
...Yes.
That would have been cool
About Shin, I've always kind of entertained the idea that he's sort of flipping the "masked" idea on its head, in other words doesn't need a mask. Instead of putting one on, he takes his off; because his human form has become the "costume".
Yeah..me too
Same could be said for the oni on Hibiki.
Guyver Dark Hero was also pretty rad
Fuckin A
It's decent, way too fuckin long and the exposition is dire though
yea esp since it was a much smaller budget that the original but was WAY WAY better
Yes, the second one was much better then the first corny attempt.
I love dark hero , one of my favorite movies
It's always a pleasure to watch someone talk about tokusatsu in an intelligent and clear way. Awesome video buddy 👊
Intro: No no no no give up,
Women were made for tennis!
Lol, i laughed hard for that scene.
Popoku!!
Pipimi
Let's just say that I'm Keita Amemiya fan and I'm always interested in Ultraman Nexus it's dark but cool
I still have those two live action Iria/Zeiram movies, I love them! Absolute blast to watch.
Iria: Zeiram the animation is one of the first anime ovas I ever bought. Loved it since I saw it on Sci-Fi channel back in 2000.
I recommend Violator Hakaider and the two Guyver movies.
NO! First one: very, very bad, avoid! Second one: much better, more entertaining, makes up for the shitty first movie!
>insinuating that toku movies are good
Power Rangers RPM: Whole Episode was dark
@Falcon Punch, If your a fan of Keita Amemiya’s work then I’d highly recommend you check out Tekkoki Mikazuki. It’s basically a six part mini-series that pays homage to Giant Robo and Super Sentai, while adding Amemiya’s trademark style and flair. It’s a bit more kid friendly than his other works but the surreal imagery turned up 11.
I've actually watched the first, need to get on to the rest soon
Skull Soldier was a project by its main actor (who was the villain in the first Garo). And the reason Skull Man never took off was because Ishinomori couldn't finish it. Funny enough, it was the first design for Kamen Rider. Oh I'm pretty sure Lady Battle Cop was recycled into Janperson.
When I saw the thumbnail for this, I instantly snapped to memory of seeing Zeiram as a little kid on HBO. All I remember of it is Zeiram breaking out of his prison, I didn't even know it was about a coolass Samus bounter hunter until now, just thought it was a horror movie and it was too scary. Seeing his little pop-out face thingy at four years old... that left an impression.
Even when I was a few years older, seeing Yoshimitsu from Tekken creeped me out because he's basically inspired by Zei lol.
Every time I've tried to watch Shin Kamen Rider I always fall asleep on it at some point.
8:38 I've read that Jiban was based quite heavily on Robocop. I had no idea Robocop himself was inspired by Gavan. That's pretty cool.
Hakaider is a good one.
Actually, the lyrics of LADY BATTLE COP theme song are not "tennis" but "phoenix" which is much more badass.
Lol...lady boy
Great video. I've never heard of half of these. I'm aways surprised that people in the tokusatsu fan community rarely talk about movies like Helldriver, Tokyo Gore Police, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, or The Machine Girl. They're all crazy, imaginative, and full of insane practical special effects.
I think that by considering not only the impressions of a movie but also the social background of Japan at the time, we can further understand the depth of each film.
Apparently Shin Kamen Rider was supposed to be a prequel, but it didn't got continued
is continue in sic story , when his son become new rider shin and wear classic ichigo rider
Shin Kamen Rider was only the prologue of the story, but they discontinued the project
Don't forget the Skull Man adaptation (2007).
That was later adapted into an anime series
Great video, thanks. Finally watched Hakaider after many years of searching for a copy and currently working through the Zeiram films and am looking for the next "adult" tokusatsu film and this has been really helpful.
Kamen Rider Shin was a prologue to something bigger...people forgot about that. I love the prologue though.
Oh and about the naked scene,I heard from the comments in this video: ruclips.net/video/X_vq8i24D0A/видео.html&has_verified=1
It goes that in several mythologies folktales and legends, fairies, angels, spirits, greek gods, and others are portrayed naked. Even in religious renaissance paintings there's nudity. Even Babies are born naked.
So yeah,it's just a way to show their innocence...until Shin becomes a monster.
Lady Battlecop?!! WOW!
Great video, definitely opened my eyes to some new things I need to check out
Very cool video and wow I had not thought of Zeiram in quite a while. I remember back in the early 90s coming across it on video and really digging it. I was always looking for wild scifi/horror type films and that one fit the bill! I believe I also saw the sequel also. Man now I want to search them out and watch them again!
Shin is officially a kamen rider
Fun video, I had planned to cover a few of these. Lady Battle cop is what I've been the most excited about.
The Highsea Thanks! Would really love to see your take on some of these movies!
The Highsea Me too
I remember watching Zeiram at my mate's house, really good movie very dark and violent, really wish Kekko Kamen should have been in the list as well as Onechanbara the live action movie.
Not a movie, but Lionmaru G is another bizarre toku
Man, excelente channel! Subscribed already and waiting for the part 2 of this video!
Watch Mechanical Violator Hakaider
That robocop design is indeed very good
Saw some of these back in the 90s. I also like Mirai Ninja
Kamen Rider Black is a pretty dark series. Great kaiju designs too.
Zeiram is pretty fun indeed.
KR Amazons by the way, for the people who are looking for a middle ground between both these and the main KRs.
just need a a few more budget for costume anda action.
Oh gawd someone took the time to make this! Thank you!!!
I want to see a show that is a hybrid between The power rangers and the boys One day
Thank you for the video! I just got into the Zeiram series and was left wondering if there was anything else like it.
Amazons is also pretty dark.
@Zip Zop Incorrect.
Kamen Rider Amazons the Movie: The Last Judgement is a movie. I think both seasons have compellation movies based on them as well.
I really wish Kamen Rider Shin got a second movie..hell,I'm game for it.
Muhd Wahid same
@@technodude458 Yeah! It's..opened..it's still opened. Toei..you can do it.
Me too
All those movies are amasing. I love them !!
Shin Karen Rider always reminded me of Bio-Booster Armor Guyver. Interesting;y, Takayuki (creator of Guyver) loved Tokusatsu himself as his Guyver was in fact his own drier interpretation of the masked heroes.
Robo Cop was inspired by Kazumasa Hirai's 8-Man =)
His design was inspired by Gavan.
@@Megared82 From what i had heard From the Robo Cop Documentary was 8-Man =/ was the inspiration ?
Awesome, thanks
That spinning bloody ballerina kill was hilarious🤣
I need to watch Lady Battle Cop!
If I may, I think the major "mistake" you make in this video is assuming that many older tokatsu shows were made with a young audience in mind (60s -90s). I'd agree with you regarding most (if not all) made 2000 on, but not prior.
Mikadroid: Robokill Beneath Discoclub Layla is actually just Mikadoroid in Japanese, a portmanteau of "mikado" (meaning "the Emperor of Japan") and "droid". In other words, this is a weapon (cyborg, not robot) of the Empire of Japan. This is a gem.
whoa... that Lady Battle Cop is awesome
anw, i agree on Shin, its kinda missed opportunity
kinda wished Toei pick up again and treated Shin like Amazons
So Mikadroid is a slasher film with a toku villain in the mix, cool. Tohokushinsha, I FOUND YOUR NEXT IDEA!
Also, it was made by Toho.
This video was awesome. I haven't looked that deep into Tokusatsu because it's overwhelming how much there is. I wanna check out most of the stuff referenced so I made a list and figured I'd share it.
TV Shows:
Garo
Space Sheriff Gavan
The Mobile Cop Jiban
Kamen Rider Amazon
Manga:
Kamen Rider Black
Skull Man
Movies:
Kaman Rider Shin, ZO, & J
Iria: Zeiram 1 & 2
Mikadroid: Robokill Beneath Discoclub Layla
Skull Soldier: An Aesthetic of Vengeance
Lady Battle Cop
I wish there was a Robocop and Lady BattleCop crossover movie.
Mirai Ninja(another amemiya movie),loved the design
Well, that was an informative video! I think we all learned something here today, and that was: "Women are made for Tennis" (^-^)
I actually adore Shin. I'd say he's my favorite Rider.
I suggest getting Zeiram (found a new copy on eBay for like 10 bucks), and the Amemiya Collection DVD set which comes with Zeiram 2, Moon Over Tao, and Hakaider!
Im started to adore tokusatsu now
I'm fucking love the darkside
Lady Battle Cop is awesome.
Mirai Ninja and Hakaider are great as well
Kamen rider ryuki and kuuga/agito, and faiz, and blade also had a dark storyline, so many plot twist.
but they don't show blood.
Lady Battle Cop Serena Williams with Gun Smash of Fury 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Well today I learned women were made for tennis... You my friend just earned my subscription
I'm a huge fan of Cyber Ninja, personally.
Ditto
Word
Funny how I just watched Zeiram 1 like two weeks ago.
have any one heard of karate robo zaborgar it was like first tokusatsu film i ever seen very dark and bloody
I had forgotten about Zeiram i acctually saw a dubbed version that Scifi channel aired a couple times
OH the US live action fist of the north star it's ....a thing that exsists
Skull soldier looks so freakn awesome
Guyver movies are pretty amazing imo
Seconding Mirai Ninja and Hakaider; also Zebraman. Matango I suppose is more horror than tokusatsu.
Mechanical Violator Hakaider...that was dark, and had so much overt symbolism that its funny (especially if you watch it with friends)
Really enjoyed that movie, made a review for it awhile ago as well
The fly ripping Shin's face open is really disturbing
WHENS THE NEXT DARK TOKU VIDEOOOO? I love it man 👍👍👍👍
vapid vices Thanks, hopefully next week
@@MrFalconnpunch yo this is seriously a comfort watch video for me, I love it so much. did you ever release 2?
@@vapidvices8982 I haven't, been busy. But currently working on it now
bright red blood is the way
Lady Battle Cop...so far, that’s the closest we’ll get for a live action Bubbgum Crisis. That helmet is so close looking to a Knight Sabers’, they just need to cover the mouth.
Edit: love the others though.
Well, there's Dark Soldier D you missed.
You might have to add tetsuo: the iron man in your next video....its pretty awesome
That stop motion monster actually scared me.
You missed an oldie but goodie: Gunhed (1989). Plenty of action & some gruesome deaths.
I totally forgot what Kamen Rider movie from, but I was watching it when I was a kid & it was really creepy. It has scenes that just disturbing like a scenes from The Thing or body horror type genre. Also, I like to mentioned Zetman for another more mature theme Tokusatsu series.
I also recommend Kuuga-Blade they are also dark
Keita Amemiya is the Neil Gaiman of Toku. I highly recommend Garo and it's sequels
What, no Cyber Ninja Shiranui? I think that's a Keita movie as well
I would have to recommend Moon Over Tao and of course Story of Riki oh
Technically, for Shin Kamen Rider... he is still a Kamen Rider (Masked Rider). His human form is the mask, and it is in his human form he rides the bike. So, the "Masked Rider" thing is just him being in his human form. lolz
And also, Shin Kamen Rider and Kamen Rider Black came out almost about the same time - when Ishinomori-sensei was trying to finally bring in the gory and "adult" elements into the Kamen Rider franchise. Toei was intrigued by the idea but the censorship forbids them from going too far because "Kamen Rider" is a brand that is supposedly aimed at young children (despite its mature themes from the start). So... they split the design and the story for Kamen Rider Black , made it into two Kamen Riders - the story is used in the Kamen Rider Black show while the design is used in Shin Kamen Rider movie. The manga version of Kamen Rider Black is simply that - how Kamen Rider Black is supposed to be, i.e. the cool story of how a man was turned into a monster, which retain the organic monster design rather than being a metallic cyborg, to be the next Millenial King but retained his humanity, and struggled to fight for humanity.
p.s: And yes, the showering and naked swimming scenes are weird. But these are supposedly followed by a sex scene. But... well. Even if they added the sex scene, it shouldn't make sense in coherence too. But that was how the script goes for the Tokusatsu in the late 80s and early 90s. lolz
Kamen Rider Black/RX actually alluded to this fact when you see an insect like head before the rider's helmet is shown.
The idea was for the Kamen to be the mask that the monster wears so that people don't shit themselves when they see him.
"toei inspired robocop with space sheriff gavan" eightman, which is a 1960s anime officially dubbed in the US about a cop who gets critically injured and turned into a cyborg, is what actually inspired Robocop. Eightman also inspired Gavan. Eightman also had a toku film and OVA in the 90s that was officially licensed, as well.
Regardless-- good video, I enjoyed it quite a lot, even if I did know about most of the films.
2.10 oh no... you hit....my arm.... I'm... dying....
Nice video. I heard of Lady Battle Cop a while back but had forgotten the title, so thanks for covering it. I want to see it more than ever now and I really need to get around to Zeiram.
What are the bloody clips from 0:15-0:19 from?
SJ Fujimoto the clips are from the Kamen Rider Amazons show
@@MrFalconnpunch Ah, of course! I should have known when you said darker takes on properties for children. Thank you.
Keita Amemiya is pretty much a god when it comes to Toku movies from back in the day. I highly recommend "Mirai Ninja" and "Mechanical Violator Hakaider"!! I am yet to see "Moon Over Tao", but I suspect that one's great as well.
And the US Guyver movies need more love!
Zdravko Genov Yeah I’ve previously reviewed the Hakaider movie which I had a lot of fun with. Next time I do a vid like this will definitely look into more Keita Amemiya movies
@@MrFalconnpunch I second Genov's recommendation of Mirai Ninja. It's kinda like if you mix Star Wars with cyborg ninjas, with Amemiya's usual visual flare
Believe it or not. Shin Kamen Rider has a sequel in the form of a book.
Awesome 😀
Please do a vol2
keita amemiya is a god
I guess all areas of cinema have a dark underground lol
Mikadroid is a Tsuburaya/Toho movie directed by Tomoo Haraguchi. Fun fact.
I would love if toei made a kr shin remake on the same style as amazons
Maybe another Amazons movie exploring a failed Prototype of the Amazon project code named "Shin"
Oh man that would be horrifying, I imagine the transformation having blood and even more agonising screams unlike the lame moan in Prologue
7:15 oh hey! that's a meme i regconize
Is there a dvd U.S. release for shin kamen rider? Thanks.
What's the clip near the beginning with all the spurting blood?
lol, Shin Kamen Rider had a Resident Evil Tyrant(Mr.X to boot) in it.
Shin Kamen Rider was the Prologue of the entire story, which was most likely why nothing was really explained or elaborated in the movie. But they discontinued the plan because the Prologue was not well received, so they just discontinued the project.
nope, Shin did well, it was Toei who cockblocked Ishinomori because they wanted something more Rider-like, wich became ZO.
Shin is a good movie.
you can't change my mind
