I live in a country 🇿🇼 where cars attract a 100% import tariff. Makes citizens poor and some government workers very wealthy (a hefty bribe is way cheaper than the tarrif).
It's never worked. Government interference in the economy, especially trade, always causes more problems than it solves. But it's not so easy for the layman to grasp why. And that's why crooks are able to convince ignoramuses that it's going to solve all their troubles and make them wealthy living on easy street. As the woman in this video points out, these labyrinthian rules simply create fertile grounds for the corrupt to benefit via bribery, influence-peddling, and grifting on a large scale. Forcing otherwise good, law-abiding folks into participating in the cloak-n-dagger corruption if they have any hope of making a go in business.

In the 90's I went to a talk by a retired KGB colonel, and during the Q&A I asked him why the Soviet Union fell. To everyone's surprise, he blamed Yuri Andropov's crackdown on widespread corruption. What Andropov hadn't understood, according to this colonel who had served under him, was that corruption was the only thing holding the Soviet system together. Corruption allowed black markets to flourish, and black markets were the only free markets, the only place where you could buy decent boots, tractor parts that worked, and modern personal computers. Even state industries depended on black markets for reliable electricity, adequate fuel supplies, quality rebar, and timely road repair. When Andropow made the Soviet Union live with it's actual policies enforced, it collapsed. When your rules are irrational, you depend on rule-breakers for your survival.

There are so many effective ways to help do that. I know a church that taught a business class so that people would know how to start a business, price things effectively, and market their business. There was once a wealthy entrepreneur who started really helping people. What was happening in the country is that it only cost a few hundred dollars to start a business in a particular country, but banks would only loan large amounts of money. So he started "Penny Loans" where he only loaned that few hundred dollars that could easily be paid back with interest by the borrower. People don't like him because he made millions off of the loans, but no one ever talks about the number of people who were helped because of him loaning them amounts they could actually afford to pay back.

That's the point maybe. Bureaucrats ask for power to help the needy. This allows them to use that power to enrich themselves. This creates more needy, which then allows the bureaucrats to ask for more. The cycle repeats, and people demand more of the poison that created the problem. In my personal opinion, I believe that some of the foreign aid sent to the nations in Africa has stifled it's people's ability to succeed and advance. For example, if you can't even start a small business because some country flies in 100 tons of rice when you were supplying the ppl with it they've just destroyed a business. They've destroyed the person's ability to make money, the business and trade between farmer and person selling rice (or whatever), and the many other things that come from ppl being able to trade with each other both locally and across the continent.

@Max Bridges> Yes, the MSM went near these stories. In fact, Stossel used to have a program of this nature on Faux News, until it was canceled due to poor ratings. I guess people got tired of his constant bashing of the government, even Faux News viewers who are used to this sort of propaganda. He used to pick on some law or regulation, and then blow it out of proportion just to prove his point and promote his agenda. I used to wonder where he went when he left Fox. @EthnoEuropean's CountriesAreBeingInvaded there were fewer people in the country but as soon as the ANC took over millions of people from other African countries came down to SA thinking that now it was 'Free', they were going to get work and live freely in South Africa. Unfortunately that caused a massive unemployment rate and now we have millions of out of work people.
Greater opportunity means less need for government handouts, which is exactly why those in power oppose it. The self reliant are much harder to control.
And therefore you can say the opposite. Those that are offering government handouts (EVERY democrat running for president) are doing so to make it easier to control the masses. They want everyone addicted to freebies. "Free" college means they control what is taught and what you learn (just like in the public schools, which is why they are so against charter schools). "Free" medical care means they control your health and decide when you are no longer needed (die). What they really want is to revert back to 14th century Europe. They are the kings and queens with their chosen ones in court, and the rest of the world works to keep them happy. Or, as Thatcher said, "Socialism is great... until you run out of other people's money".
Wow, so eye opening Mr. Stossel! I have admired your body of work over the years, and am so appreciative that there are still masters of journalism out there like you! It does give me hope in this strange new world of fake news stories and manufactured crises!

I think they have a lot of entrepreneurs, just whenever you try to set up a business the buerocratic weight is so high you'll likely starve to death for trying.
Yup. Same sort of problem here in Zimbabwe. People aren't stupid, or incapable. It's the environment that stifles growth. It's dumb laws and corruption. It's also politicians making these laws in order to stay in power or promote their friends. Lots of us leave the country, not just to work menial jobs like the stereotype goes - we've got stock brokers, Olympians, star athletes, corporate executives, Hollywood actors (Danai Gurira, ,Black Panther)etc So the best people get driven out. The entrepreneurs with big balls take the risk of being in a new environment. Shit, I taught myself Japanese and now I'm out here interpreting.
Another thing to consider is how farm subsidies in America and Europe impact Africa. Thanks to the subsidies, the European farmer can afford to sell his wheat in Africa at a very low price, much lower than the African farmer can afford. Sending cheap grains to Africa may temporarily help the consumer, but it’s not helping African jobs. If companies like Toms want to help Africa, build a shoe factory there.
the sad truth is that just doing that wont do anything, not before the corruption and lack of morality are dealt with, in Mozambique the grounds are extremely fertile but unused, a fairly large company went there, planted a lot of wheat and used circular farms to help with irrigation when they went to collect they entered the circular farms and to their surprise all but a meter on the outside was left, all wheat was gone
Now here is my version: Africa is poor because we run constitutions that don't match us...back then we had a cultural constitution that simply WORKED....and then we entered the so-called modernity and put on a new "uniform" but with the same inner spirit....what a wrecking mismatch! Let us make our countries easier to run...put technocrats in posts (not loyalists or kin) and let us run lean governments....let's embrace constitutions that develop along the way, not something copied from another culture! Damn it!
The stoss is back! Btw, I'll never donate to Africa or anywhere. Africa doesn't have a population problem (or lack of) there's too many folks there already.

No that is not the reason you are poor. Countries like Denmark or Singapore also have very high taxes on cars and are amongst the richest in the world.

Africa is on his radar.

He should have flat out said "goverments can not tax their people to success"
"Inefficient government" is redundant
Central control doesn't work.
Exactly and that's the problem in Africa...
@zerocooltx the Philippines is a screaming example of central control but it's people are too dumbed down to see through it. The more entrepreneurs are restricted the more they'll find ways to evade it.
It doesn't work in government just like it doesn't work in business. Decentralized decision making is the fastest means of progress.

It's really pretty depressing because while the consumer might not think that far down the road, you know at least someone in the boardroom has. And that is really quite despicable.
Not only the issues brought up here! But in some villages, Africans just don't wear shoes! Some Westerner comes over, see's kids without shoes and thinks "oh my god, these poor kids don't have any shoes. We need to help them". When in reality, some of them just don't wear them. “Teach a man to fish” type-thinking. Helping people help themselves.

Ya shoosis fo every bud.
