For a "poor man's" skidding cone. Cut the top off of a 55 gallon barrel. Then a big U- shaped cut out half way down the side. Last cut a hole in the bottom to run your chain through. Wrap the chain around the log, then the other end through the hole to your tractor. It should help keep the end from digging into the ground. And, help keep it cleaner. Just a thought.
I built a log arch out of scrape metal then a log arch trailer and I pulled in a 28 foot tree of that size behind my ATV. I had also built a chainsaw mill but used a lawnmower engine to drive the chain and I could cut logs up to 14 feet long. Love your enthusiasm . Don’t break your loader.
If you are going to keep gathering logs, build yourself a 2 wheel log arch that tows behind the tractor. There are lots of plans on the internet. I built myself one and it keeps the logs clean
How awesome it is that you have an endless supply of free lumber to use as you desire. I love seeing the two of you working side by side on all of your projects. You make a wonderful team. God Bless you and keep you safe and healthy.
Sometimes in life something like your old tractor brings interest, excitement and highlights those qualities of determination and tenacity which you both have in abundance or you wouldn’t be doing all things. Good on you!❤
I love bird , and your birds are doing so great looks heathy too , you saved a lot of money on milling your own woods , build your house with your own tree , great work ❤
You're going to want to build up some supports on both sides of those 16 foot boards overhang or you'll find that all your long boards that you struggled to get out of the woods dry with a warp in them.
You should weald some chain hooks on your top of the bucket and allows you to pick up logs or anything else with chains, and when you go in between trees, you can turn the log kind of diagonal to get through I did, and it help me
I guess there is a reason that loggers drag the logs into a place to load. I just learned recently that that it is up hill. I know, it makes sense, but I had never really thought about that part before, and I come from loggers and my son is doing it now😁.
What if you were to cut a longer ridge beam log ,mill it as far as your 18' max allowed by your mill. Cut a slice with chainsaw down a couple inches then just let the excess log go beyond your actual mill and then just bring the mill back to the chainsaw slice and continue to mill another 18' that's a potential for a 36' foot beam.. just brace up the log that extends past your saw mill with log rounds or whatever.I could email you a picture of what I mean if you don't catch what I'm trying to say. "For future uses " Ps you two are always doing great ,and I love watching what y'all are getting into next. Never fails y'all always get it done.👍✌️🌍✌️
Sometime people use a big yellow cone so the log dies not hook up by something in the woods. And maybe you two can find a small axle with wheels to put one end of the log and stamp down and put the other end of the log on the tracker to drive it out of the woods.
Love watching your videos, your house is going to look amazing when you are done. I can't wait to see what other improvements you make to your property. Great job.
Hey guys, still watching but I have a suggestion for moving the logs easier. Build yourself a small cart that you can put at one end of the log once you get it out on the road. Then you can hook the other end up to the tractor an tow it home without it tearing up your road.
Good morning see you guys are having fun today. I was gonna tell you they make these two tired A-frames that you can lift up and haul trees from the woods with Katies quad once is on the ground she could bring the wood to you
one thing you might think about is you have dead lumber in the forest of your land and you got 4 wheeler so hook chain on it and go drag what you can out to cut into firewood that is what I would do and it's just an idea
Usually have comments for U tube videos, but I really enjoy yours. You seem to work well together and have likable pesonalities. Looking forward watching your progress.
I love your milling, such beautiful wood and boarding, then to watch you build your structure, it’s got to be the most rewarding feeling for any craftsman! Love your videos family ❤
It actually smells like soap that is mixed in the water to break down sap build up. Currently the Tide laundry soap that we couldn't stand on our clothes 😂
maybe you should get a set of lumber tongues and a 2 wheels axle rig, like a wheel barrow, to support the far end of the log so it doesn't gouge the road and drag out the really long logs you need.
Choking the little end of the log really helps prevent plowing when you yard logs. On the yarding topic A TEAL OF GRIDDER WOULD. BE USING A GOAT DOG MIX TEAM YARDING LOGS TO THE MILL.
Well done you two! Greg your getting very comfortable on the saw. Good layout before cutting, getting the most out of that log. love the channel, looking forward to next episode. Thanks have a good day.
Get an old car hood. Lay the leading edge of the log down on the car hood. Chain to the log and the hood at the same time. Pull it right on home that way, without the log digging in.
I love watching the milling process from recovery the tree to the finished logs, so interesting. What a lot of hard work, but you now have great lumber at a fraction of the cost.
Congratulations on your wood haul. Great improvisation getting that huge log, through the trees. Y’all are getting better,& better at the mill. Job well done Greg,& Katie! Until next time.💯❤️👏🏾💜🙋🏽♀️✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
Just what I was going to say. Or even a log dolly with wheels and with a notch for the log to rest into. Then they can strap it on and tow it without getting dirt in the bark.
You need to get or make a log trailer. I don't know what they are called but it's just a set of wheels you put under one end of the log on the other end you lift it with the backhoe (or whatever three-point attachment you want to use) and a chain and pull it along behind. Or cut all the trees down along the side of the road so you have X feet of clear space.
you guys need my choker cable that I used to use for cutting fire wood got it from my dad He was a lager then lots of cables lots of Jokers still still have lots of Jokers without cables if they weren't so heavy I'd send them to you
Love watching the videos, you could maybe try lifting long logs with a chain under the bucket. Have chain tight enough that when you tilt bucket back it holds log tight to bucket, but then you could tip bucket forward and pivot log a bit as needed to weave through tight spots.
Drop it, connect to the 3 point hitch and use that to get the front off the ground and drag it. Ok disregard that, you dragged it with the front loader backwards. Both should work.
From a Danish forester from the time before hydraulics. Build a simple cart using the arm as leverage to lift logs. Tie it to the log and lift the other end with a simple attachment to the 3 part attachment to your tractor. I will make scech for you. How to forward to you?
hmmm;;;;that's what I call slippin thru the trees;;;lol;;;;frustrating I'm sure;;;ya just have to laugh cause mother nature didn't plan on rowing trees for your convenience;;;lol;;;had a similar with load lumber from one side of house to the other bjt I cheated;;;had a four foot 2x12 that put between tree and lumber and forced thru;;;lol;;;;thanks for sharing;;a big thumbs up and keep em comin;;;;
I am not being a know it all and do not intend to irritate you, just asking; I am unclear on why you strain your hydraulics by lifting logs instead of skidding them. It also costs you more fuel. A nose cone will prevent digging. If dirt for saw is the problem, debark the cut line or get a piece of scrap steel to use as a skid tray. I get that the backhoe doesn't have the lift capacity but the lower frame does. A suggestion; for the stickered wood you want to dry, cap the sticker stack with a stickered flitch or few to shed rain.
I think a wheeled dolly to support one end of the log then lift the other with the backhoe then just tow it, you would save fuel and time, just a thought.
It's awesome that ya'll are starting a barn build, dragging those trees through the woods could be alot easier with a dolly or skid. Or use the backhoe arm and hook them with it, any t hing but trying to jockey them down the road...lol 😂😅Love ya'll ❤️
I have an idea why don’t you use what loggers use in Oregon? They have a two wheel chassis and set the logs on these two wheel chassis and pull it out. Make it look real easy food for thought.
Looking at you trying to carry the log by placing it in a transverse position I reckon it would be far better if you transported it firmly holding one end by the tractor and strapping the rear end onto a kind of trailer-type structure that's bearing just an axle and its wheels. which would be able to roll freely. The wider the axle is the easier it could roll on uneven terrain. The same applies to the wheels which, depending on their size, would facilitate movement.
I love that all your buildings are made of trees from your property! And of course, that your animals are always around
For a "poor man's" skidding cone. Cut the top off of a 55 gallon barrel. Then a big U- shaped cut out half way down the side. Last cut a hole in the bottom to run your chain through. Lower the bucket and attach it cable to the tree and drag it out

Nice job on the cutting of your lumber. Great video l like the scenes of the falling snow
The personal investment you two make to recover these materials is awesome! Thanks so much for sharing this.

Those boards are beautiful!
Hi there from ireland we are glued to your videos
You guys are impressive! It’s so good to see people that aren’t afraid of honest hard work. 👍

What a beautiful log, what beautiful lumber. So neat you guys don't get frustrated with each other, but just work problems out.
The wood looks great can’t wait for you to start building the barn 🇬🇧😊
Turkey for thanksgiving
Northern Tool has a few log sleds that would make pulling those big logs a easier or maybe you could build one. Just a suggestion from an old man.
Really happy I found your channel.
Welcome aboard!
what you need is a Log Arch to haul long logs
I’ve been watching you two for awhile. It’s so awesome to see how you guys live. God bless you both. Keep up the great content
Thanks so much!!
@@ThisOffGridLife you guys are so welcome. Always live your best lives. 😊
Watched you guys long time… just have to say that scene of you bringing log down the road … wow you’re property is so beautiful
you guys need a log dolly. lots of diy videos on the tubes. thanks for the video.
Are the turkeys new Katie?? I’m so excited to see you start the barn build!!🙌🏻❤️
Yes, I've wanted turkey chicks for a long time but these 4 came up for sale
Looking like a very heavy duty barn fr sure

Nice job with that tree & milling! 🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s

Nice amount of lumber 🎉 Take it easy, rest up

Beautiful lumber. Nice job. The end justifies the silly way you got the log to the mill. Thanks for sharing

Hello,
Yes, it's me watching you do your thing Lady it's nice to see you help your old man keep up the Great videos
Nice work on the milling. Not easy but at today's lumber prices you couldn't ask for a better alpine life style, milling and building.
yes the spring rains will be coming Greg is right mud season will be soon
Love how y'all use teamwork to get things done ,,(teamwork makes the dream work ) 👍
Usually have comments for U tube videos, but I really enjoy yours. You seem to work well together and have likable pesonalities. Looking forward watching your progress.
Nice work and great lumber, you guys! Greetings from Peterborough, Ontario.
I love your milling, such beautiful wood and boarding, then to watch you build your structure, it’s got to be the most rewarding feeling for any craftsman! Love your videos family ❤
Wow Greg what a stake of lumber! That was a lot of work!
I like the saw mill shuffle. New dance
Love when you two use the mill. Nice structural lumber -satisfying, not to mention it likely smells great!
It actually smells like soap that is mixed in the water to break down sap build up. Currently the Tide laundry soap that we couldn't stand on our clothes 😂

I'm Deaf and applauses so good see you then I said hello 👋🏾👉🏾🦻🏾👏🏾📱 how you feeling about this play with your goat cool outside there 😊😊
HE DOES EVERY THING HARD WAY
Always an expert sitting on the sofa.
that was a great job, from cutting the length and then moving it to the mill and then cutting it,
You should look into getting a plastic skid plate that you can put logs on to help pull logs out of woods. Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.
Choking the little end of the log really helps prevent plowing when you yard logs.
On the yarding topic A TEAL OF GRIDDER WOULD. BE USING A GOAT DOG MIX TEAM YARDING LOGS TO THE MILL.
A log arch would be handy
Definitely
Well done you two! Greg your getting very comfortable on the saw. Good layout before cutting, getting the most out of that log. love the channel, looking forward to next episode. Thanks have a good day.
You should make some kind of wheeled dolly for the log and pull it.

It's all coming together have a happy Easter ♥️
How cool...no snow...finally being able to move on working on your goals 🎉...and what a view, gorgeous nature around your area💫🤗
I laughed so hard at you weaving that log out of the woods. It reminded me of a puppy trying to bring a stick through a doggy door.
Looks like you need to make a 2 wheel dolly instead of wasting your time and energy using the bucket, use a chain and the dolly, good luck
You better get supports on the end cuz they will warp there.
You're living a fun life!!!
You need tines to put on the end of your bucket to move logs. Have them stick out 1 1/2 ft from the end of the bucket. Way easier to load and move
Thank you! A great Log drag plan and cut! Ron PTL USA
Nice video. Good looking boards
Thanks!
Great timbers there Greg. Well done cutting. Like said, a log arch would be an extra bonus for your operation. Thanks for the video Katie
Must be so satisfying being able to save thousands of dollars milling your own materials.
Sorry i love your work but i always smile when the goats have fun thanks for adding them in 😂

with the bucket flat on the ground you can make forks that your bucket will set on to pick up the logs you will not hurt your back
That little tractor sure gets a work out.
Great job you two. Getting it done.
you guys need my choker cable that I used to use for cutting fire wood got it from my dad He was a lager then lots of cables lots of Jokers still still have lots of Jokers without cables if they weren't so heavy I'd send them to you

live and learn. save time and fuel

save the bark pieces for siding for sheds. overlap them
