    Thank you so much for the mention!
    When I started playing in 2008 the BPM's where much slower, and we usually played stuff by labels like Chain Reaction, echospace [detroit], Ilian Tape, Sushitech, and M-Plant for example, at 124 BPM. Dub, Deep & Detroit nights. But since we always played in clubs and pubs, we evolve with the community and what surround us.
    Also the introduction to mixing in 3 channels can achieve having synths and pads from dub tracks mixed with more peak time stripped tracks with good drums, and it's something get's people by surprise and they always dance. I never thought that I could have the chance of playing Phylys Trak in his original BPM, and it make everything feels like a circle that start repeating itself but with a new context.
    Sungate and Entourage Concept are definitely the new labels pushing the fast Dub Techno scene. And Uncage and RSPX have also a lot of peak time Detroit / Dub releases.
    Some artist I could recommend are: Elias, Stojche, Dying, Antic Soul, Dijuma, Ayqix, 23.4, Fadi Mohem, Skudge, Kaap, Stephen Brown, Private Press, Conforce, LKY.
    And in the house world, I think Janeret, S.A.M., Djoko, and Chris Stussy are really going for this fast Dub House.

    arrangement is what it makes energetic, you can have 200 bpm track arranged that way it seems like 100bpm, simply sparse, half tempo arrangement creates the groove, 2/3 rhythm, or/and triplets - the final BPM tells only part of the story, that's is why you can mix 180 bpm song with 120 bpm - just consider one of them is in triplets, they can mix together (you will get funky/broken rhythm). If I am correct, 120 bpm in triplets will give you 90 bpm 4/4 'tempo'. So, yes, as you said tempo is not everything, but arrangement is a key.

    • @mcharbo8726
      @mcharbo8726 2 года назад +1

      True! I've transitioned from Dubtechno straight into Beatroots downtempo before. Timbre, texture and arrangement is key!

    "Hard" or "Peak Time" Dub Techno could be a topic for another video to expand on this theme: VRIL, Robert Hood, Eric Cloutier, Heiko Laux, Ray Kajioka, Sterac, Psyk, Shifted, ø (Phase), Stef Mendesidis, Hybrasil, Mark Broom, Marcal, Yan Cook, Deniro, Conforce, Koschka... labels: Kanzelramt, Klockworks, Tresor, Ostgut Ton, M-Plant, Delsin, Redscale, Uncage, Rekids RSPX, Palinoia, Mote-Evolver, Planet Rhythm, Entourage Concept... etc. Not all are purist "dub techno" but certainly borrow certain rhythmic ideas and dubby chord stabs.

    • @wegpiraatwilco

      Aren't these artist more minimal, hypnotic, deep, raw, modular techno? I see no dub elements in them.

      @@wegpiraatwilco see this is where I don't like commenting much because it all depends on how much you want to split hairs or argue over what beatport is calling things these days... a lot of "dub techno" was called minimal back in the day anyway so yeah anyway most aren't 100% purist dub techno like I said most borrow certain rhythmic ideas and dubby chord stabs ... hopefully you get where I'm coming from with these examples.

      I think one of the reasons it works so well in a warehouse and club setting is that it just works perfectly on a huge sound system.
      The humungous lowend is often a rumble and just booms through that room and those big chord stabs add some real drive. Everyone goes bonkers when you play it.

    When they have clubs in the sky, this is what they'll play.
    I've always had a steady diet of 150-160 breakbeat/acid trance and I also found there to a be a massive shortage of that stuff after '98, looking back. Probably the most concentrated period of futuristic dance music for me. Makes it worth digging.

    I heard a track at the end of a Schranz Techno mix from 2005 that was very dubby. It was fast, heavy, but had the most amazing hypnotic chord stabs. It's been 16 years since I've heard it, but I can still hear it in my head... My heart raced when I saw the title, hoping it would be here. 😂

    This is great, been looking for more stuff like this, I'm a "deep" dubstep producer/DJ but the stuff I do specifically draws HEAVILY from techno and that whole dubstep/techno crossover thing the likes of Martyn, 2562, Scuba, Peverelist etc started doing in the mid/late 2000s
    Some of these tracks around the 140ish mark would work extremely well in the type of set I like to play, lots of very cool stuff for me to dig into here, thank you!

    I think fast dub Techno has the potencial to blow up in the club scene. Like here in Berlin many young artists and crews are partying to this kind of music. Often combined with tribal groovy Techno. Lost in Ether, Artaphine, BCCO, Influenced Records are just a handfull of Labels who are releasing/supporting fast Dub Techno Tracks at regular intervals.

    Even before the pandemic, I was never much of a club guy, so I'll probably always prefer slower dub techno. That said, the faster tracks you featured in this video seem like they'd be perfectly at home at a warehouse party or similar. Dub techno is a big tent, I don't see any reason to limit it to a very thin sliver of the BPM spectrum.
    Great video, keep up the excellent work!

    philosophically once could argue that faster dub techno is actually slower than average dub techno. at 140bpm counted in half time, you have a 70bpm track built around a slow 32nd note rhythmic structure. try counting fast dub techno tracks in half time and you will find really deep subliminal pockets. dance to it and discover a very nuanced and deep groove...

    A lot of things I’ve been listening to in the progressive house/trance realm have been sucked into a cesspool of slowness (128 BPM and much less now… more like 120-122 BPM). I absolutely adore the range of tempos there are in dub techno, as it reminds me of how electronic music was the Wild West west back in the early 90’s. There was NO “standard” tempo back then, and I dig that there isn’t such a thing in dub techno.
    That said, I like to increase tempo over the course of a set/night, so the more of a range of tempo there is in dub tempo, the more options there are for progressing a set from start to finish. I think there’s DEFINITELY a need for 135-140 BPM dub techno that works for peak time.

  • @djpashtet
    @djpashtet 2 года назад +5

    Great selection!
    I'm also discovering more and more that the speed and the energy/intensity of a given track aren't strictly related.
    I think, at this point, it's pointless to try to limit dub techno (or any other style) to some sort of tempo, structural, or even timbral conventions. Time and time again, various artists and labels showed, that core ideas of the “established” genres can be developed into all manner of directions. And I think it's great, electronic music is still in its early days, and It's nice to see it progress (even if this progress can feel somewhat cyclical at times :P).

    Definitely loving the fast Dub Techno sound. I would love to see more artists experimenting with dub and dub techno elements in faster, harder, or noisier areas. From what I've seen, ambient and noise can sometimes be very similar in terms of arrangement so if dub techno and ambient can go well together I think it's entirely possible for dub techno and noise to work together. It may end up sounding more like more like dub hardcore than dub techno but it would still be interesting to hear.

    Personally, i really enjoyed tracks at higher BPMs that take elements from dub techno, mostly the dubbed saw chords, but put them over a more driving frame with thumpier, bigger kick drums than what you showed in this video. Such tracks include Van Bonn - Counterpart and Strvck - Contra (PVS Remix). They only sit at 128 BPM, but feel really high energy and to me feel like they'd work great in conjunction with other styles of Techno, when considering dancefloor use. For home listening, i tend to preffer slower tracks, or such ones with a slower arrangement. Like the Calibre, DRS and Mark Ernestus collab. Generally, I love rootsy dub techno/dub fusions like Babe Roots or Another Channel do for casual listening

    Komplex never released much stuff on known labels but the dubbier trax used to span between 125-155bpm (live). I think that Komplex - Tunnels track on Soundform Recordings is close to 140bpm from memory... Don't think all the dubbier tracks shelved by Soleil Records ever got officialy released either, just played in Echoplex's energetic mix sets... Soleil is a great label, good of you to include Rainshell in this video. Echoplex's Magnetic Share of Wonders would have been a great pick too. Totally under rated artists.

    This might be cheating but I think Hidden Hawaii and now Nullpunkt kind of exist in a high bpm 'dub techno' area. I'm aware that most the output from those two labels is mostly inspired by D&B and isn't reliant on 4/4 time signatures but listening to Zwischenwelt by DB1 it's pretty obviously inspired by Basic Channel and the like.

    Whenever I try and use my pea sized brain to qualify or quantify music I love that takes me out of my pea sized brain, I end up in the Schrodinger Cat litter box. I end up knowing nothing about nothing and having to un-ask all the questions just to find my front door. With that being said, I tend to lean more to ambient side the ambient dub techno equation. Sorry, I know Ive added "ambient", but my brain needs all three with "dub" being in the middle. The fulcrum if you will in the giant teeter totter of "DUB TECHNO". And when I do find my front door and venture out I drift towards, I don't know ...acid techno??? It's whatever genre or teeter totter that has TM404 on one end and 999999999 on the other. I personally find Dub Techno's focus on texturing makes it more appropriate for headphone listening. In a club with all the chatter and poor stereo imaging, a lot of the musical detail is lost. I don't mind higher BPM DT, but I don't think it would be my choice for a noisy club.

      I think there’s a lot of people who have dub versions of their tracks, leaning more towards the scientist mixing style rather than carrying on a legacy of Maurizio.

    Is the ADI-2-DAC worth it, if I may respectfully ask you about this matter, Sir? Are you using it for CDs or vinyl?

    • @DubMonitor
      @DubMonitor  Год назад +1

      I use it as a DAC for my desktop computer (to send audio to my speakers/headphones/IEMs). I'd say it's worth it if you need its feature set. In terms of audio quality, the difference between a $200 DAC and a $1000 DAC is measurable "in a laboratory" but not so much by the human ear (in my opinion). But it had all the features I needed, so I went for it :)

    I’m coming from house/progressive house, where BPM’s have been trending downwards for a while. I remember 128 being fairly slow 20 years ago, and that’s roughly how I’d start my sets (125-130), finishing a good bit faster by the end of the night. That was forever ago (retired), so whatever.
    Anyway… most of what I’ve been listening to has been closer to 120-124 in the house/prog world, but even a lot of standard techno & trance has been sub-126. Anything over 135 is perfect for me! #maketechno150BPMagain

    I tend to feel DubTechno sounds better when it’s slower, with its foundations in Dub. As DT speeds up, for me it morphs into more of a generalized Techno . I prefer it slower as it works so well for setting moods and laying foundations for progression in sets.

    • @Volpearg
      @Volpearg 2 года назад

      Actually most of the firts dub techno tracks where super fast because they duplicated the normal tempo of dub (70) to the double (140). Progression and layers are sepparate things from speed I think

    • @Durdelly
      @Durdelly 2 года назад +1

      @@Volpearg I agree, but offer a differ: that Dub Techno (as a genre) has predominantly been on the slower ebb of the flow. I think (and again, this is only my own take on things), that it’s generally been felt this style should be slowed down a little, as it flows so damned well when it’s at the lower end of things. I never really understood how it could called Dub, when it was charging along - heading rapidly into techno-time territory.

    • @Volpearg
      @Volpearg 2 года назад +1

      @@Durdelly Oh, yes, for sure. It was more close to ambient, an worked as a soothing background music, I agree with that. But most of the time I play 120 bpm tracks at 140 bpm, with the master tempo, so the key of the track is the same, only faster. It will be more oriented to the dancefloor, and also work as a background music for people that are used to hear harder Techno.
      The essence of Dub for me is related to bass, echoes, reverb, phasers and filters, it's the sound I used to hear on dub reggae all the time and translated to the dub techno realm.
      But maybe as you said, the genres will start dividing more and more and get their own category in the future, we will have to wait to see it
