It's not only about the scanlines. He is using a crt filter/ mask and it's not visible in this video, even if you're watching in 2160p. It looks WAY different if you're seeing it in real life. If you're getting close to the screen you can actually see the red green and blue elements that you could also see on a real crt, which gives it a really authentic crt feel and looks really nice specially with an RGB Modded N64. On RUclips you can barely see the scanlines and nothing else.
The HDR CRT filter idea is great. I am happy with the picture quality I am getting from the OSSC for every console but the N64. Some RUclips channels claimed there was little difference between composite, S-Vid and RGB on N64 so I went with an expensive S-Video cable and a transcoder but I get a slight double image, mainly obvious on hud elements. I’m hoping an RGB mod and a GC SCART will fix it and get me close enough without the expense of the RT4K. Though I’d buy one in an instant if I was bathing in cash.
Fantastic and detailed video my friend just ordered mines and can't wait to try it with all my old consoles, I hear u can even use it on newer gen consoles like the ps3, switch and Xbox.
Yeah, you just can't get a good image out of n64. The image quality is better, but the hardware itself just prevents it from looking as good as an upscaled emulation.
@@cpaek72 u can but ur gonna have to turn off all filters if u want the best possible clarity. So not only turning off the hardware blur but also every blur filter thats implimented in each game. This is with having the rgb mod of course This will come to personal taste but Ive gotten sharp output as much as my ps1. Even fooling ppl since theres so much dithering on n64 games without all the blur filters xD tho the 2nd blur filter will either have to be taken off by using cheat codes thru an action replay or using an everdrive. Except for some games like quake 1 that has it in the options menu
What are your thoughts on turning off anti aliasing? Is this something you don't recommend? And what about de-blur? Is it unwise to turn off both of these layers of blurring in an effort to get perfect clarity?
Personal preference if you want a sharper output vs the original look. I will say that disabling AA can make some games look broken though. Star Fox for example looks awful with AA off. The deblur effect you can get from the RT4K or other mods does a good enough job for my needs.
Just received my Retrotink. My N64 is modded with the UltraHdmi mod. Currently I have system outputing in Direct mode. Thoughts on the retrotink settings for someone who likes the crt/scanlines?
There are too many combinations to give a definitive answer in the RT4K! The Kuro ones are excellent recreations of different TV's and are a good place to start.
Quick question: what type of cables are you using to connect the N64 to the upscaler? I have the Retro Tink 5X Pro and am currently stuck with composite cables till my S-Video arrives in the mail. The 4K is so sexy, but I need to seriously step up my bread game to buy that monster
@@ArchadesGames Wow, that’s some serious hardware. I like the N64, but not enough to get that crazy with it. I’m personally much crazier about the Dreamcast, which I have the GDEMU and DCHDMI for. To each their own. Thanks for your response
@@ArchadesGames I’m playing with component hd retro vision cables not really a fan of scart. I go to profile and try to use it and it says no signal. Every profile I select it says no signal scart or hd 15 do I have to use one or the other to get a signal? Plus when I try to use 4k 60 I get a popping sound and the picture keeps going in and out randomly. So I have to use 3840x2160 for it to work.
There's still a big Asterix with Analogue, as good as the products have been when they came out, Kevtris's PR has been awful, and down the stretch there wasn't as comprehensive a feature set as what we get in the Open source Mister and upcoming MARS device. Moreover although the Mister doesn't upscale to 4K since the RT4K does, and with near imperceivable lag, the Analogue 3D has big boots to fill matching Robert Peips achievments,
@Dronetothetop whilst I agree, I can't find any decent sellers of good sized CRTs in my area. I'm stuck with like a 12" one at the moment which is okaaaay but is tiny to me. Would love a 24" or maybe a 32" CRT
@@IEnteredShikari I know kinda sucks isn't it? We have two choices. Get a good CRT which is not an option for you, or get the RestroTink 4k but that one costs too much. I wish the developers realize what really is going on here and give us a proper CRT shader options. That would be great.
3d N64 games just look wrong when they're that sharp. I'd honestly prefer a smoothing filter of some sort. but 2d games look incredible with sharp pixels.
Looks quite bad in my opinion. No wonder people prefer CRT. I would recommend N64 Digital mod with 480p setting and Mclassic attached to it. Makes the N64 games look much better.
Why is that? What's your argument for it? I have tried many settings, and with mclassic it smooths out the image better. Especially with N64 games on modern display. The details on the characters and objects become better visible. When it's sharp pixels, the characters and objects lose their details, because of the too many pixels present on screen.
Crushed black levels, wrong colors, wrong aspect ratio correction. Are you also aware that there are tons of smoothing options in the Tink products let alone the CRT filters that actually make things look right.
There are no crushed black levels. Don't know where got that from. It doesn't change the colors. That's on the tv setting, how you set it up. Aspect ratio is just 4:3, wich is the correct aspect ratio, when setting it on the blue light. I know it has those options. The CRT filter looks good on video. Forgot to mention that. But the pixel perfect, doesn't look well. Especially when you watch the video on bigger screen. The character models and objects lose their details.
The scan lines came through well watching on my c2 at 2160/60. I for one would really appreciate a full video like this with the scan lines applied.
I'm going to try it next week!

2 more this week!
I think the Mario 64 footage (32:06) probably best shows off those sharp 4K pixels. Looks amazing!
Mario 64 is a good fit for sharp pixels. Most really shine when paired with the CRT filters
I cant believe that we use to play in such low resolution. It looks clean upscaled. Some artifacts but it's expected
CRT tech also made a huge difference. I really recommend playing N64 with a CRT filter especially!

Modern RGB mods with deblur and HD Retrovision cables are a great pairing!
Honestly at 4k res the scanlines do come across nice and clean.
Well that's good!

Yup, it's great for all non 4K systems!

Looks great with the CRT emulation! Just can't effectively showcase that on YT 😑 Emulation is the way to go for an unfiltered image imo.

The best the N64 can look at the moment. Though nothing wrong with S-video on a RT2XPro or a real CRT setup.
N64 plus CRT is always the best option

I have an RGB modded system I used for this video. I use Retro Access Scart and HD Retrovision depending on the room I have the system in.

There’s really no options for component.
Load the profile and change the input.

Eh, I'm not that interested in Analogue stuff. If I want to emulate a console I will just do it on my PC.
Very respectable, but I´m not talking about software emulation... Analogue 3d or N64 with hdmi mod are the best options + RT4K
There is not much of a difference between RGB modded and HDMI modded N64 through the tink. Especially if the RGB mod has deblur.
That is why Analogue 3d must be better, N64 output has always been a disaster@@ArchadesGames
Does it go full screen?
If you want to blaspheme old games by stretching them into 16:9 you can
I can't stand no CRT screen. That is not what we had back then. To me, people are insane saying that pixelated garbage is any good.

n64 look like ass pixelated, is there any solution without bilinear filtering? maybe integer scaling or AI upscaling?
N64 games look way better on Wii VC or through not64 emulation on Wii via a component cable or hdmi mod. I can never go back to an actual n64.
they look like ps1 games
It doesn't matter what you do, N64 looks like ass. It might have blown my mind with Mario 64 the year it came out but the system is hot trash in 2023.
Just like this take 🤣
