Absolutely! I have been playing way more since quarantine! If only my strain injuries wouldn't keep returning! There is nothing more fun to me than practising for hours. And this piece is so amazing it actually brings tears to my eyes.

Do you have any tips on how to avoid the lifting of the fingers when playing the "trills" (not sure if that is called trills: i mean when playing C B C faster). What I mean is that when i play this my hands get unconfortable and i put my hand in an uncommon position

I've got this one fully learned and am just polishing and improving the rough spots. A month ago when I first started this, it seemed like I'd never get it. My brain was struggling so hard to maintain independence of the left and right hands. I could do them separately but when I tried to combine the two parts, it was a mess. Now I can literally play the whole thing with my eyes closed!
I've now moved on to #2 and #8. Now I'm starting all over again because the c-minor invention is a whole new level of complexity over the first one. The ramp up in difficulty is quite noticeable.

Dear Sally, Thank you for your generosity! The brilliance, beauty, and passion you breathe into this composition and others is fantastic.
You are the most articulate and poetic in communicating great music. What a beautiful mind and spirit you are. I'm "self-teaching" music theory and piano, and of course with all the helpful resources I can find out there. Began about 6 months ago and am beginning to learn this invention.. my first baroque work. The most ambitious work for me to date. So grateful to you, Dear one.
    Best wishes,

I struggled with this piece as a child years ago and I am still struggling since I picked up the piano again 3 months ago. This Bach piece is one of the music got stuck in my head for decades. Until it gets to repetitions of 16th notes for both hands, I can manage to play from the childhood memories. But I never thought the Invention was beautiful music until I watched your tutorial video. The way you explain and play as you do, it is indeed a beautiful piece. I am encouraged to continue practicing for I really want to be able to play it in one beautiful flow. Thank you so much for this video!!!

LOVE Bach's "Inventions"...can listen to his compositions forever...sighs...and you, MS Sally C, make the playing of them and the construction of them seem so "easily done"! And I enjoy your insights to how the pieces were "done".or "built"..so fascinating - had not seen that done at all! As a kid, I originally learned piano from the mother of a "NYC MET Opera" Star (Eleanor Steber) and I still just wish you would play them fully...since I love JS Bach so much...

I took many piano lessons when I was a little younger and after a long break purchased the Urtext inventions and thought I’d really slowly work my way through them to get some technique and ideas back. As primarily a jazz musician some of these simple compositional ideas are fascinating and will definitely become integrated in my improvisational play! Thanks so much for these videos and lessons they’re definitely enriching my self study of Bach significantly!

I’m SO thankful to have quite accidentally found this channel. Hands-down, the best teaching videos for this material (the Bach Inventions) I’ve seen yet. I’ve been playing piano for 40 years, and teaching it (and guitar and several other instruments) almost as long; but in my very rural, culture-starved community, most of my students unfortunately don’t make it out of the first two or three method books before football, dating, and farming take control of their lives, and that ends most young piano careers before Bach is even in distant view. I myself got a 2 year music degree, and simultaneously studied piano tuning and repair (among many other things, including Information Technology and Electronics), but, per my family’s demands, took a job in a dangerous factory because “music isn’t a real job”, and subsequently crushed off my right index finger in a machine that I should never have even been in the same room as to begin with. Somehow though, through countless surgeries, bone grafts (donor bone from my wrist), and a year of physical therapy to re-learn how to use my hand again, I somehow found myself with a reattached and rebuilt (but grotesquely misshapen) right index finger with, miraculously, about 50% functionality (I was told that EVERY other surgeon would have just completely amputated and called it a day). Somehow, I guess out of pure fight-spirit, although my dreams of some day playing the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto with a live orchestra were crushed (along with my finger), I found a new path, and actually became a BETTER musician AFTER the accident, and actually DID make a successful career out of music; continuing to teach beginners, working with major artists on stage and in studio in rock and country music, and even becoming the composer and pianist for “The Official FolkLife Play” of the State Of Georgia, called, “Swamp Gravy”; true stories of the history of rural Southwest Georgia set into musical theater format, for which I write and perform all music. We are now, at this moment, celebrating our 30th Anniversary… I never seriously got back to classical piano though, and I still want to. I have a goal of playing ALL the Bach 2 and 3 part Inventions, and who knows, maybe even Rachmaninoff again some day, albeit, the “9 1/2 Fingered” versions, and on top of only having 9 good fingers and 1 “gimpy” finger, I also have UNUSUALLY TINY hands! 12 YEAR OLD KIDS HAVE BIGGER HANDS THAN I DO! LOL! … So, I’m just PPPERFECT for Rachmaninoff! LOL!…
… All that said, my classical piano learning stopped dead in its tracks with my accident, so I never got a deep understanding of: BACH’S ORNAMENTATION! I’m hoping your videos will help me sort it all out (I SO wish I could have private or video chat lessons with you!), but I am still VERY CONFUSED over all the different ways I hear Bach’s ornaments executed on these Inventions and on other pieces. EVERY SINGLE PIANIST I see playing these Inventions - world class, and very credible pianists! - plays the ornamentation differently; EVERY ONE… All GREAT, but all DIFFERENT… What’s a “beginning again” classical piano student already at the upper edge of “middle age” to do, to learn these “right”? Any advice would be SO GREATLY APPRECIATED! … Thanks SO much, and thanks so much also for your wonderful work!
    😊😊😊

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  Год назад +1

Hello Steve, thank you for your very kind words about my teaching videos! I am so sorry about your hand accident. This is a horror story, and I can barely imagine how traumatic it must have been. You have tremendous courage, and I'm sure your story will be an inspiration for many people who read your comment. It's wonderful that you have gone on to teach music and to play the piano despite your index finger limitations. *** You ask a very good question about the ornaments and the many different ways you hear them played. Ornamentation became highly developed in Bach's day, and every keyboard player was expected to incorporate an extensive list of ornament options in their playing. For the student first learning about Baroque ornaments, there are two that are most often used, the trill and the mordant. The trill begins on the note above the written note, and there are at least four notes. The mordant begins on the written note, and there are only three notes. Many Bach piano books will include a page with the names of the different kinds of ornaments and musical examples showing their notation. You can also search this on the internet. I do agree with you that the variety of ornamentation we hear from many of the top Bach specialists shows the wide range of possibilities regarding ornamentation. I hope this helps you regarding this subject! I wish you and your students all the best with your musical journeys. 🎵

I began with the piano this last January and I've been playing Burgmuller 25s and started some sonatinas, and Bach's Inventionen. I love the way you explain the structure of the piece, the little details differing a barroque piece from one of the romantic period, etc. This really helps to grasp the real pourpose of this opus: get a taste for composition. I really love this piece, so wonderful to have the compositional analysis in this video, love too the anecdote with the voice, letting the phrases breathe. I really want to play this, I'm coming from guitar and studying composition, got a piano and the Faber books semi recently . I think these would be good for a lot of things, two voices, left hand. I think I'm still a bit beginner for this though, unfortunately :/ I'm going to learn this invention 1st though I know it! This video will be my go to! Can't wait until I can play these, and the fugues, someday.

      @@SallyChristianMusic Hi Sally,
I noticed your interest into Spanish Music and into the Music of Albéniz; my personal favorite is Córdoba from Op. 232 - 4; also many of his pieces were successfully transferred to guitar pieces which sound beautifully! But I'm sure you'll also know the performance of Alicia de Larrocha...
I'm Spanish myself and I love the way Paco de Lucia 'modernized' the Flamenco Scene; he was a GENIUS together with Camerón de la Isla...
But still in the first place I remain a really true BIG J.S. Bach Music Lover! He's my Musical Father sort of speak; His Music is always Intelligent, Emotional, Mind-Blowing, ... Never 'commercial' like Mozart sometimes had to do.
Wishing you also all the best & Stay Safe in these Corona times...

Most people that purchase the charts do not own an 11 X 17 size printer. I always recommend that they go to a print shop such as Staples or Kinkos to have their large 11 X 17 size sheet music printed on heavy 60 pound paper. The copies are beautiful and durable. I do the same thing when I print my own personal copies of the chart music. I'm glad you enjoy these lessons, and I wish you the best with your piano studies.
