The music of Bach, Mozart, Chopin, List, Schubert, and others can really be fascinating, like being lost in a beautiful and musical way. So, Bach wrote these for his wife and kids. Either they were talented musicians or he hated them, using the Inventions as torture. It’s takes me forever to learn these (I can muddle through four so far) but with your guidance, I’m a bit closer on #6. Muchas gracias.

Thank you for the lesson and the analysis. A point of attention for you is the audio-quality of your recordings. Listening with a PC with high-end headphones distortion is audible during peaks of the performance (also in recent recordings). Watch Ulrika A. Rosén for perfect sound and hear the difference. Update: What a nice piece of music! Very nice to play and to put energy and emotion in the performance! The next goal is mastering Sinfonia 3 and Sinfonia 9.

Sally, I realy love your videos, I have been watching them and buying the charts that have really helped me a lot to have a better understanding of the music. It also did accelerate the process of learning. I have learned some nventions using your method and I am planning to learn a beethoven sonata (one of the op 49) or a mozart one (k282). It would be very helpful if you could do a chart that i can buy for one of those pieces.

Sally, you mentioned to check out the 10th, and it have to be resolved. I don’t understand, because a 10th is literally a 3rd. Does a 3rd need to be resolved ?
Hello be c, thank you for your question. You are correct that a 10th is the same as a 3rd, just separated by one octave. Are you asking about measure 16, around 7:50 minutes in the lesson where I talk about the 10th between the right hand A# and the left hand F# that signals a modulation? We are going somewhere else harmonically, and this unexpected A# does resolve to a new key, the dominant key of B Major. If this is not the place you are referring to, please give me a counter number in the lesson so I can better answer your question. Thank you!

I will start with measure 46. Taking a look at the opening Subject and Counter-Subject in measure 4, you will see that the left hand has a 32nd note closing motive. Measure 46 has the identical left hand closing motive, but this time it is down an octave. Above it, the right hand Soprano Subject is adding a parallel part a 10th above. This makes a lovely duet as a variation of the opening measure 4. In answering the other measures you mention, it is very straightforward: This piece has a total of 3 Sequences, which are marked in your CSA. Sequence #1 begins with measure 9, and Sequence #3 begins with measure 51. As you probably already know, sequences have repeating musical patterns which repeat a step either up or down the scale degrees. Bach is using the 10ths between the hands/parts for both of these sequences. They are the "stepping stones" to follow that begin each repeating two-measure phrase. The 10ths here are not about resolutions, but about the repeating melodic patterns of the sequences. I hope this answers your questions about the function of these 10ths.
