I worked on a land rig from the time I was 19-24. Double, rotary based out of Illinois but we drilled Illinois Indiana and Kentucky. Anyone who wants to work on a rig, Do NOT be scared. The first 2 months are the hardest but I promise after that your body is used to it. After a year out there the job got super easy and I remember thinking a lot of times “I can’t believe I’m making this much money to do this easy of work.
Don’t get me wrong, finish ups are a bitch. But on finish ups I’d always work a 16hour shift on overtime which made it much easier mentally.

I just left offshore to go land based. Few things to clarify the biggest differences between the 2.
-Offshore requires significantly more vetting due to coast guard regulations along with maritime laws etc.
-Offshore also is alot more strict on safety. Almost laughable at times.
-Land based will generally pay more, because you will be allowed to work more. Offshore is generally around 50% of the year. Same job from offshore to land was a $20k/yr jump for myself.
-Offshore housing is free, but cramped and kind of shitty at best.
-Offshore food is 100% free along with snacks and drinks etc.
-Offshore is significantly easier in terms of getting breaks.
I went from contracting on the railroad, getting 0 breaks, 0 lunch, etc to offshore where (atleast my company Seadrill) there was a 15min break every 2 hours and you get lunch. During the 15min breaks, snacks are brought into break room. Generally things like quesadillas, pizza, sandwiches. Then lunch was usually really good. Like surprisingly good.
All in all, I would stick with land if you are looking for money. Unless you get on Overseas work, land will allow for more overall hours in the year along with potential per-diem.
Anyone looking to just get started QUICKLY, just apply for "roustabout" positions on almost any offshore job. They hire almost anyone that applies. Easy easy money. 12hr days and you generally only WORK for half. The work is 95% easy. The 5% that is not easy is all in your leg endurance. Be prepared to walk up and down stairs constantly. Idc how in shape you are, carrying tanks from u-deck to heli-deck will kick your legs after chasing tag lines for a few hours. Otherwise very easy job.
So even after Bidens band on oil pumping you can still find work?

Great video, my wife and I are at work out here in west tx around Pecos on the rig as service hands. We are on day 94. We get people all the time asking about working out here and from my 20 years experience all those people are just curious but will never get up and head this way. The only person that ever did was my wife and I wouldn't do this without her here as my night hand. My advise to anyone coming out here is Save your money, dont finance anything, get the crappy truck to start with and buy the next more decent one cash as well. If you have a mortgage start throwing a lot into it to get it paid off fast. My wife and I drive an older murano out here but its paid for, along with our house etc. Use this influx of money to set yourself up to where if the industry crashes tomorrow (and it can) you can go be the greeter at Walmart to pay your electric. So many people come out here, start making 100k plus a year and finance the 80k truck, the 250k house, and the 40k new car for the wife and kids etc, then when the industry crashes they LOSE EVERYTHING. The cash way is harder but its the right way that'll make your time out here actually amount to something.

We fired this guy a couple months back for fucking off while at work
I only gave the oil industry a couple years. I started as a laborer running OH crane, forklift, acid tank, sandblasting, etc.
Worked my way up to an oilfield tech position and even ended up involved in some of the engineering aspects. Was one of a handful of folks able to rebuild our rotating flow control diverter assemblies being that it was in-house designed proprietary tech.
First time on a rig I got 8 hours of sleep total in 5 days. I give the rig boys respect where it is due, you have to be able and willing to work hard.
But no family time or holidays allowed, and most trades pay better. Oilfield is very anti-family and hit or miss.
Depends where you are, here in Australia O&G jobs get on even swings after a few years if your keen for them. Ie - 2 weeks on 2 off, month on month off etc. Not many Dads get to drop off and pick up their kids to and from school for a whole month so I'm told.

Where the heck was this video when I was 19 back in 1987?!?!
This is gold-level information for young men today.
I think people are not seeing that the largest part of the salary comes from overtime. You can get paid $18 an hour and work 80 hours a week and get paid $93,600. Living in the middle of nowhere working 7 days a week 12 hours a day is definitely one way to make $80,000 +, but if you take off a few months to rest at $30 an hour you are losing $12,000 every month so your paycheck can easily drop below $100,000 in 2.5 months of not working.
That's still good money for me. (I'm 22 btw)

Owning a trailer lot and charging $500 per space sounds easier
Duh genius but less than one percent of people own land. It's not easy or cheap
That’s how wealthy people continue getting wealthier! They literally have revenue streams that they don’t have to be physically involved in at all. I can’t wait to get done with school and get my cpa knocked out. Owning rental property/property in general can make someone a lot of money
Tyler Laster yeah but if you can’t physically be there then the maintenance work is even more complicated because you’re then hiring someone to do that for you, and that’s been a nightmare for a lot of people.
Bobby Dunnit true I’m sure it’s a headache paying a property manager but damn that is the easiest money you can make. Also, I doubt the lot he pays for comes with any type of maintenance.

Great primer for the industry from a real dude!well done bro ,im gettin my steeleltoes ready.
He is saying ''it's not that hard'' but it is hard for most people. I worked fly in-fly out in the oil sands for 9 years and the hardest part for most people, in my opinion, was being away from their friends and family. Your friends and family typically move on. The weather is really harsh especially in the winter and even for us in skilled trades, the work is often menial. I didn't mind that, but a lot of people did - they wanted to advance their skills and not just sit in a truck waiting for safety permits and then pulling cable in a ditch. Most people can't do it, especially people who are not cut out for physical work. The job culture is also tough up there. The money sounds amazing but when you start making it, at some point (I) started seeing certain things as being more important than big money. Namely, not having to watch my kids grow up on a computer screen. And sure, I'm a mom but I found that a lot of the dads were having very similar issues.
You should've lead with "l'm a mom"...well, you aren't cut out for any of this.

Troutdog @top.comment.god
wait this isn’t instagram
Haha

You aint layn pipe unless u on a rig
I used to to chase pipe from west texas clear up to wyoming in my 1974 camper. But i had enough of the road. Then i got into UST installs starting my own excavation & consulting company now piping out gas stations. I like it better. No welding all poly and fiberglass stuff. Its more a game of who you know, but Im home every night. State and fire dept permits are the major hassle, also getting parts is hard sometimes. The jobs are small and slow but i run the whole thing and make all the money now. Along with a couple side gigs im gonna be doing great by this time next year. Much less stressed. Adequate sleep and food now.
Beau you guys are a bunch of studs! I work in L E in northern Minnesota for the state. I was bummed when Biden shut down the pipeline. But any chance I had I would buy pipe liners whatever they had or were buying in front of me at the local stores. You guys keep our homes warm in the winter. I only had a couple run-ins over the past 15 years. But just had a serious man to man Talk and that handled the problem. Thanks for all that you guys do.
Really dig this video, thanks for taking the time to share for some of us... I live in oil country, up in Alberta, everyone had a oil/gas job, always saw the guys bring home big cheques but I never really saw anything of the life out there! Always wanted to get out there, but never felt like I knew anyone who could help me get into the industry! Thanks a million for posting this dude, for real!
No clue how this got in my recommended.. im in the Northeast 🤷🏻♂️

I think our equivalent is plumbing and stonecutting.
How’s the weather over there?
Me neither but im sure happy it did
Thanks for the advice, will take it to the fullest
Finally someone who tells the truth. Other people over exaggerate their job to make them look special. It really isn’t that bad. My husband is a welder.
Love it. True hard worker who DESERVES the pay. Learning new things on the job while being paid less. I wish most people understood the concept of learning new things on the job and separating yourself from the others who just wanna get a paycheck
î😅u😅u..edit my cat did thatx😂a🎉
As a surfer here in Hawaii I couldn't agree more when you say "there are no guarantees in Pipeline" ...lol 1:10
Boy😂😂😂😂😂
You need a roommate 👽

TheOresCam women his age have sense. Most women his age cheat if they are hoes, not because of a lack of a man. Girls these days are just different
Dinko Rinko All women are the same
Dinko Rinko I live in a small town with a low population at that. But there’s still a lot of them older women getting piped down while there man is staying gone. Happens a lot more than you think 🤷🏼♂️

I'm so glad I found this video. My dream is to be an entertainer doing voice acting/dark jokes/music but I know there's little to no money in that. This doesn't seem like a bad route to go down at all. Appreciate the info!
It's hard work on a pipeline, been around the goose a few times rooting and in the cap shacks. you eat when your welder tells you to, and you better eat fast!
I got my ticket as a Steamfitter and I mostly work in gas refineries but I am truly grateful I can live comfortably and proud of what I do.
My brother in the oil field, hard work long hours. He also has no wife and kids. Perfect for him... Me, I work on a shrimp boat out in the ocean sometimes 10 to 14 day trips, hard work aswell. Sometimes we catching great and the pay is good... "Sometimes".
shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.
GENZ hahaha, awesome reply.

I have over 100k save up and i see my family every day. I would never leave my family . U could make money but could never bring back time.
Daniel Rodriguez what do you do for a living? To have time with your family and make good money?
Labor work to make 100k plus you'll spend close to or over 100 work hours to make a living.
I work for company called JD RUSH we would scan oil pipe .I also go to the oil rigs . I work for them almost 6 years but got layoff in 2016 . My parents really help me out but I would buy food every month to help them out. I currently work for a target distribution center cool money. I work 4 10s and love it . It doesn't matter what job u have u just did to manage your money. Dont have car payment buy a cheap car on craigslist .
Daniel Rodriguez oh damn well you ain’t lying about that but honestly good to know what someone is actually doing and also your definitely right about the car payments mannnn people be just legit leasing 2 cars knowing they only make about 2000$ a month
Yeah bro I brought a new car in 2012 a Toyota Prius its paid off now. I recently brought a 1992 ford ranger for 1000 bucks. I did all the maintenance to it. I took it to Tijuana mexico to get it painting.
Information like this is valuable. We don't need college degrees
I don't have a family this sounds perfect for me. I would love to get back to welding again, I learned in high school and never done it again.
