  • Video recorded September 9, 2021 as part of a discussion to restore this car.
First video: • Up on the lift: 1974 V...
As of September 28, 2022, this 164E is FOR SALE right now in Boston, MA, for $5,000.
It was purchased by us on Hemmings classifieds from Tennessee in May 2021. We bought it to restore but since went with a 1969 model year for the different interior and exterior styling of the early cars.
Volvo 164E 1974 B30 Fuel injected, Automatic transmission.
Located in Boston, MA, 187,788 miles. Contact me at DavidBello777@gmail.com to get in touch with seller info.
    Features:
    Wheels powdercoated silver.
    Paint and body good
    123 Distributor
    Accessory fog lights
Water pump, fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition components, fuel pressure regulator all appear recently replaced
D-Jet wiring looks good, injectors not broken or cracked.
Interior is sun worn but largely complete. Aftermarket radio and speakers.
Some rust poking through the bottom of the driver floor pan, and the front lifting mount spots are rusty. Otherwise no bad rot. Surface and corner spots throughout, as seen in videos. Rockers and door hinges undamaged by rust. Very solid candidate for restoration or daily driving.
Needs: Rear u-joint, rear shock lower bushings, one front ball joint, one steering tie rod end has play.
Power steering pump leak. Brakes squeal. I did not check air conditioning. Exhaust system seems recently replaced, but sounds like a leak in the rear muffler area
Upper rear inner fender well arch plates are rust-free. Engine runs very well, transmission shifts well.

I live in the UK . In September 1972 my father bought a new 164 but it was a 1973 model. One thing I remember was that it in addition to the small disc-shaped hubcap it had a circular wheel trim which I think was made of stainless steel and push fitted over the wheel rim. Tis greatly added to the wheel's appearance. I think there was a problem with this wheel trim though. After my dad had the car for a couple of years a mechanic at the Volvo garage told him to remove these trims. Apparently there was a case where one had detached from the wheel at high speed and caused a tyre blow out which resulted in a fatal accident. I haven't seen these trims on any surviving 164s. the 144GL model also had these trims. My father's car had no aircon but had a sliding steel sunroof and had the 145bhp carburettor engine and manual 4 speed gearbox with electrically actuated overdrive.

D-jet was typically from 70/71 to 75. The dancing rear end is normally due to soft rubbers and short panhard rod compared to the 69.
The MAP sensor was regularly referred to as 'The Granade'.

Lovely car. Love the video. I once owned a 1975 164E. It had heated leather seats and electric windows with the buttons in between the seats. It was a beautiful tank. Because of the headlamps, people often mistook it for a Jag.

Also the rear lights, would become a little bigger like the 240, this is in 1975 on, also what I notice is that a lot of parts from the 240 might fit the 164,

That Bosch electronic fuel injection was a real pain, and not even the Volvo dealer I was stuck relying on for my 74 didn’t really know what they were doing. When it ran right, the car ran great. Rebuild the brakes and suspension, and figure out how to 86 the BW 35 tranny. Convert it to a C4 or an overdrive auto, or a manual. I did not really like that the 164 with injection had no torque until 3000 rpm, at least with the BW auto. Mine had a list to the left in the rear and I thought it was the springs. The dealership never thought to tell me it might be the rear suspension bushings. Add a limited slip if it doesn’t already have one, and a set of rims that expand the tire selection. Back in the early 80s those Michelin were expensive and I couldn’t find anything that was comparable that anyone else sold. Other than that, they were cool cars - still are.

The overdrive is almost essential. My '78 245 had the automatic and it wasn't happy above 110 kph. It got too noisy.

I've worked on these, the injectior seals (rubber rings) get old and crack leading to a vacuum leak and idling issues. Also had the injectors rebuilt by a shop called witchunter performance. Eventually went with a different efi system, d-jet parts are mostly not available.

    Dear David Bello.
👍👌👏 Well done again. Another wonderful green car.
Nevertheless: I like the earlier models like Ivy better because of the wider/bigger front grill, the smaller rear lights and less plastic stuff all in all.
But of course I would prefer not to have a tank behind the rear axle because Ivy always is sagging a bit in the back. Additionally I prefer automatic gearboxes (but not 3speed models) and especially fuel injection. Why always have to fiddle around with carburetors if you can have a fuel injected engine even with more power?
As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all involved people.

Ivy sags because she has four bodies worth of weight in tools and spare parts. I barely packed clothes!

      Dear @@DavidBello
      Thanks for replying.
      2) Naaah, Ivy already sagged before loading her trunk! It can/could be senn on the videos. It's always the same with cars that have the fuel tank behind the rear axle (even with finned Mercedes oldtimer). Additionally all those vehicles lift the front a lot while accelerating with the gas pedal to the ground.
      3) Most of my comment was positive. So where is my usual heart??? ;-)
      Sincerely yours.

Noted at the beginning that the door restraint was missing. 90º ain't normal. Confirmed later with the dented door. TE's had 185 tyres compared to 165 on carb cars. 195/65 are good but still a tight fit for spares. $6k? You can get a very nice but not perfect showable car for that in the UK. Even the rear of the sills should be good for that money. That one about £2k to a bit more, but I'd prefer the lower number. They are quite hard to sell, surprisingly, but I think the market is improving. RHD keeps the value a lot lower than LHD. A friend has several and unfortunately due to age related illness won't be driving them again. Not sure what is going to happen with them. Fancy importing one?
In screen aerial new to me.

Great video of a lovely car. The tell tale that this is a 74 are the bumpers. 73 had slimmer bumpers similar to the 72 but the front was mounted on shock absorbers. 74 was the deeper bumpers and those rear lamps. Also, a car built in early 74 would have to be a 74 model year car. The rust is certainly fixable. I do love the sound of that inline 6. With the transmission, I would be tempted to swap in an AW71 from an 80s 240 Turbo. The overdrive would be nice, and it should be a straight bolt in with only the wiring for the overdrive if the owner wants to be able to lock it out. Keep up the great work.

Back in the early. 80s, my 74 got rear ended by a late 70s T-bird or Cougar. Anyway, it broke the bumper shock and pushed the bumper in. That was the only damage. Never got it fixed due to the fool that hit me not having any insurance and didn’t want my own rates to go up. Anyway, other than a loose bumper - it would slide back and forth, no issues. They built those cars pretty solid.

Re the sound of the inline 6; I also think it's great. There is a YT vid called "Volvo 164 Burning Rubber Part 2". It is fitted with triple dual throat webers. The induction sound is awesome.
Reminds me of V12 racing engines with webers. e.g. the Lamborghini Espada with the 4 litre V12, also on the YT.

When you see the 1973- to later years, you can see how the 164 would have a lot of parts of the 240, like the armrests, the center console like Mr.Hunt*s 164, you can see in the trunk, the spare wheel well it even looks like the same one of the 240, the old 164s used to have I.believe 2 wheel wells, the 164 only has one the front & REAR BUMPERS would be the same one*s as the bumpers from the 1975-1981 240s it would be awesome to make a comparison, of how the 1973 on 164s would have a lot of parts that you would see in the 240 series, It wouldn*t surprise menif they are interchangeable

You seem to be a bit confused about the year of the cars! Volvo used model-years from 1960 wich runs from august to july when the industrial-vaccation starts, after the vaccation they started to build the new model year wich means that a car built in september 1973 is a model year 1974! The easiest way to know wich year a car is is to look at the id-tag under the hood wich has a letter for each year after the modelnumber:
    Amazon:
    D 1961 p120
    A 1962 (p120 E)
    B 1963 (p120 F)
    D 1964 (p120 G)
    E 1965 (p120 K)
    F 1966 (p120 L)
    Amazon/140/164
    M 1967
    P 1968
    S 1969
    T 1970
    U 1971
    W 1972
    Y 1973
    A 1974

At first I thought that it was Ivy, it is the same color, it also reminds me of Dave Hunts 1973 164, also you can notice the bumpers which would be on the 240s they are strong bumpers compared to the ones from 1969 until 1972

David! Are you knowledgeable on Weber 38/38 she’s which I have on my beautiful 1973 p1800es? Sputters in mid rpm range, 200-3500 rpm otherwise runs great. It is after market. Got taken to the cleaners on that purchase. Thanks, Bob

Had the same on my b18 years ago. Weber’s are finicky. I have an old video on the 32/36, which is nearly identical. Check it out. They’re quite sensitive to fuel pressure and the awkward manifold involved in adapting it. My advice is always to back to the SU.
