- Our bathroom light switch started to get stuck on switch on and off. After replacing this I thought I would open the old switch to see what failed and how it works.
Best DIY video I've seen. Watched once and got mine with reduced cord fixed. Thanks Chris
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped!
I had just snapped the cord on my light and when I took it apart the bits went everywhere! thankyou for this video I'd be clueless on how to put it all back without it! It was a great help!
Glad it could help!
I'm here because I bought a new (replacement light switch ) for my downstair Loo, today. But the pull cord hardly moves , just like the old one. So, back it goes tomorrow. I'm glad I didn't dismantle the old one, as it just about works, but only just. Thanks for this, well displayed.
Interesting, the rotation and spring compression mechanism is exactly the same as what a ballpoint pen uses when it has a thumb switch on the end.
Really helpful this video, thank you Chris. This was exactly what had happened to our switch, a little piece had broken off. I'm not that handy, but using your video enabled me to fix and reinstall our pull string switch in 15 minutes. Cheers.
Great to hear!
Thank you for this video! Just replaced my downstairs bathroom light switch with it. Turns out it was a tiny bit of plastic blocking the switch's movement, as was the case with yours. Thanks🙂
Glad it helped! Cheers for watching!
My pull chord is running with my bathroom light and bathroom extractor.
After near 5 years it's now only sometimes turning the light on but always the extractor.
The cables are all in correctly and the bulb doesn't need replacing. What could be the reason for this?
Perfect. I fix my switch. Rope was gone. Thanks mate.
Really glad it helped!
just came to say thank you. I fixed mine and the feeling is great. thanks to you.
Glad it helped! Cheers!
Just fixed my pull switch using this video! Thank you!
Nice work!
I just bought new for 2.26£ although I'm appreciated for that video, saved me time dismantling just to see what's inside
Thank you this was the only video on these to show the inner workings.
You're welcome!
I’ve just fixed my light looking at this video! Cheers pal
Glad it helped!
Took about 5 mins, nice one
Thanks for this video, my pull switch is slightly different but this gave me the general idea of how it went back together after I removed some screws and the springs exploded the whole unit into a bundle of bits on the floor
Yea they are a bit of a mission to get back together when that happens!
This is the best video on RUclips on this topic !
Thanks a lot ;)
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic video..no blah blah blah.. just the job!😊
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the video! Just fixed my pull switch.
Nice work!
Very useful. I fixed my bathroom switch using this video. Thank you
Thank you so much, it came very helpful for me 😇
Thanks .. helped me to fix it on my own
Cheers for watching!
Very interesting I learned here ✌️✌️✌️
Thanks for watching!
Very useful. Thanks.
My rope snapped at the top so I purchased a new fitting when I took the old off fitting all the wires were red not the usual blue, brown and green. I thought I had memorised where to screw them into the new fitting..put it all together and then turned on the electric by the mains and pulled the bathroom cord. I was relieved and happy that the light had came on. When I was going to put my daughter to bed I realized that her bedroom light, our bedroom and the landing is not work. I read that that it was something to do with a loop the lights are on but kind of confused me. My question is it's dark upstairs now and I've had to leave the bathroom light on for light and especially if my kids need the bathroom during the night because all the other lights now don't work. Will me leaving it on as it's been on for two hours cause a fire or Dangerous? I'm so paranoid now but it's to dark to do anything about it now. Can anyone please advise me.
Great video useful info
Thanks Chris
Thank you for this, it was super helpful 😁
You’re welcome 😊
Great vid useful info (our ligh brok yo dig
Thanks
In a situation like this, where the plastic bit has snapped off the rotating part, would you recommend using super glue to fix the plastic part back in place?
Personally I would just replace the unit with a new switch. The glue might work for a bit but will always be the weak point and is bound to go again.
Thxs man !
I just dismantled my non functioning light switch the Same model as yours and found the issue was the small spring on the cord was stuck abit further down the cord I freed it and the light works again now
Thank you. It helped .
Great to hear!
I replaced a switch 2 years ago and now I’ve got to do it again. These switches seem to be built to fail frequently.
Very useful
Cheers 😊
Took me 2 hours but eventually got er done. Remember please do not rush and look at how it all fits together.
I was putting it in incorrectly and shocked myself not realising I’d not turned the switches back off 😮💨
Be feeling that in my thumb all week.
Thanks mate.
Clever man
Thanks for making this. I can't work out what the string actually attaches to? Mine has pulled through the thin spring, and there is a knot at the end, but no obvious way it was attached to anything. I can't see any broken plastic or pieces anywhere - everything looks OK, just not attached. Any ideas? 🤔 Cheers!
At 1 minute 51 is should show that the string goes through the center of the unit and the knot keeps it in place.
When you pull this operates the circular cam to cycle around.
The spring is there to keep the pieces in place and allow for it to spring back after you let go of the string.
@@ChrisHorswill Ah thank you. That seems to be missing from mine (a very slightly different design) and I'm still at a loss as to how the mechanism is supposed to work without any kind of anchor point. I think something must have snapped off mine, so I bought a replacement instead. Cheers again for the video, it was nice to have a go anyway. 🙂
The "damp" is definitely some sort of grease to aid the movement.
or condensation, if it's used in the bathroom ?
My 1st from The RANGE lasted 2 week the 2nd from the Range is also starting to play up they are also PMS!
On mine the switch cycles fine (has been sticky in the past) but the neon(?) doesn't.
Any tips to quieten the loud click it makes each time you pull? Thanks!
It is annoying isn't it. In a way I am glad it failed so I could replace it with a different brand. As for the clicks, probably not since it is likely the strong spring making the plastic bits click together causing the noise.
In theory there might be an approved grease you could use to dampen the sound but I wouldn't recommend this. It would have to be approved for electrical applications.
The other thought is making the spring less strong, but if you are going to the trouble of these modifications I would replace with a better unit. MK make good electrical sockets and the like.
@@ChrisHorswill Hi, i've read somewhere else using putty or bluetak could muffle the effects slightly?
@@ChrisHorswill MK make load click all soft clicks no longer available I haved looked
Hello what is products name and information?
This is the PMS 1730 pull cord light switch. At least that is what is written on it.
I need the exact same sort that is showing in your video. Which is a few years old. Can anyone help me find a replacement. Places like screwfix they never show you what it's like inside the unit.
If you can, it would be best to remove the one you have and take it in to a shop so you can be sure to get the correct one.
Either that or try to find a manual online of the products to compare with.
Best of luck!
My cable has come out so Guna have to take it to bits, it’s a silly idea anyway if u asked me
Just saved me a trip to bandq! Bit of wd40 and all now works. Famous last words…..
Top work!
thank You ever so much. I've attempted to fix my broken switch, I couldn't because that part that You've had broken-mine is completely broken into 3 pieces, so I've had to just remove it from the mechanism altogether, and I think I've reassembled the switch incorrectly-I hope it's not gonna cause fire because of this, because I cannot disassemble it again until tomorrow and the power is back on now. but after watching your video, I think I can still get the light to work, We'll just not be able to turn it off. I can't do it now because it's dark already and my Housemate would whine like a bitch. regards.
Best of luck!
@@ChrisHorswill thank You. I've just watched your video again, and I'm probably gonna watch it a few more times. ultimately I'll need an entire new switch but for now I'm hoping to at least put this switch into the on-position. -We've used candles and phones in the bathroom for the last couple of days. I wonder, seeing your switch-how does One connect this type of switch to the cables? it must be damn uncomfortable to install it. mine is different-One takes off the cover, the round thingy, and the actual mechanism is attached to the base on the ceiling, not to that round cover, which I think is better, or at least to Me looks like easier to install. what I also wonder is about that larger spring-it touches the metal conductor of the mechanism, and on the other end it touches the plastic cover directly-how does that not cause a problem, for example the plastic to melt/burn? your video is extremely helpful btw. regards.
hello.. bathroom light pull switch issue (sorry..) but it's odd.. you pull the string down and the light comes on, i release the string expecting it to sort of catch as it does and keep the light on, but it doesn't, the light goes off..
so.. i pull down, light goes on, let go.. and light goes off.. this is not normal function..
i don't mind wiring a plug but i'm more reluctant with a switch attached to ceiling.. i hope this makes sense it's a strange problem.
That sounds like the switch is worn out and needs replacing. Doesn't look to be engaging and clicking to the on position.
@@ChrisHorswill thankyou, sounds like you know what i mean.. will it be straight forward taking it off the ceiling? maybe there's a video?
El cheap-O 😂
My cord has fully fell out,can I just put it back in
You should be able to since it sounds like the knot has snapped inside. This will mean taking both the face plate and the internal cover off to get to where the cord needs to be knotted.
PMS - hahahaha!
