  • As an adult who plays Warhammer, I get a lot of questions when I mention my hobby. Is that a video game? Is it like D&D? If you've heard of Warhammer, or if someone you know is into it, but you're not totally sure what is actually is, then hopefully this will clear things up! What exactly do we DO with all those toy soldiers anyway?

Great explanation dude, for anyone new to this amazing hobby, my only advice is to try it! Have a look at what YOU like, paint the models you think look cool, read the lore that interests you and try and learn some new things through RUclips! Good luck! Just remember, warhammer can get expensive fast, so don’t jump in at the deep end. There are so many aspects to this hobby. Maybe buy one model or just a squad to begin with. Good luck :)

5:30 In addition to the LOTR miniatures Games Workshop has made a surprising amount of games of all varieties (they made a Doctor Who board game!)... though they're niche enough that most people's reaction to their existence is 'hey I didn't know GW made that', and then forgetting about them again.
Like the most notable is probably Dark Future (a post apocalyptic car-combat game), because it had a video game come out on Steam within the past decade.

    • @originalblob
      @originalblob Год назад

There are stronger and less strong types of units, but this is not by design. It's because balancing the power of so many different types of models is very hard and the game developers often make judgment errors when assessing the rules. However, the rules and points costs are changing all the time, specifically to correct those types of errors as best as possible. So, what is overpowered at the moment might be comparatively weak in six month time.

Nothing compares to the moment a party reaches the ritual chamber and instead of some crumby Lich -- you put down the Nagash Supreme Lord of the Undead model. Jaws drop. Faces palm. Pants fill. Roll initiative. Your fear tastes like gummie bears to Nagash.

    • @basedeltazero714
      @basedeltazero714 Год назад

The initial plan was that 'Warcraft' would be a series of games in disparate settings - medieval fantasy, modern, future, post apocalyptic, etc. (Think sorta like Total War? Except those are mostly historical, but general idea - same engine, different settings). They wanted, at least casually, to get a license for WHFB as one of their first in the series, but Games Workshop wasn't interested. In the end they made a bit of a copyright friendly version, though things diverged quite quickly from there.
Starcraft is really similar only in that it's a sci-fi game following a fantasy game. There aren't really shared factions between the two - even the humans have a rather different aesthetic. The Zerg and Tyranids are kinda similar *now*, but this was back in the day of 2nd edition tyranids, which... do not look like that, and it's more that they both have a lot of xenomorph in them.

"...is it like Warcraft ?" ... uhm ... well, yes, from a certain point of view... simply because Warcraft was meant to be a game about Warhammer but something didn't quite work out with the intellectual property and blah blah blah, so Blizzard changed it just enough to avoid a lawsuit.
p.s. I get a little confused by the term "high fantasy". Would you mind expanding on that a bit and other kinds of fantasy, for someone that has been reading fantasy books but is apparently a complete noob :D you put in opposition to "Tolkienesque" fantasy but when I went on wikipedia they say Tolkien is kind of the archetype for high fantasy... that just added to my confusion

Generally it's more of a reference to how fantastical the magic and fictional races/species are.
It's a bit subjective, but if there's powerful spellcasters, dragons, elves and powerful artefacts, it's high fantasy.

I was also surprised to see Age of Sigmar in a video "what is Warhammer?". Maybe if the title was "What ruined Warhammer"...

@@robertchmielecki2580 Oh booho. Warhammer FABA was not selling, single units in 40k were selling more than the whole game. GW had to do something about it.
I understand that the are probably long time fantasy fans that got upset after the game got shafted (plus some armies like Tomb Kings and Bretonnia disappearing, which I'm upset about) but there are way more people that started caring about FABA only after AoS was announced.

Played a few times over the years. Loved painting. Would love to just buy them already done. Couldn't be bothered painting again.

Most difficult part of warhammer truly is picking a faction! I struggled so much from jumping between armies and spending so much money. The rule of cool doesn't work for people like me that think EVERY FACTION LOOKS COOL LOL. However, I found my heart in THOUSAND SONS I love the space wizards

If people were confusing warhammer with Magic the gathering , they will love the Warhammer 40k Commander Decks that will be published by the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond

Hi mate. Thanks for this awesome intro. I live in Amsterdam and near my house I always saw this Warhammer store and i wondered what was this all about. Now I get it... right now my hobby is Mechanical custom keyboards but once I buy a new house i will have space to start with the Warhammer models. I think painting will help me relax... Probably will not be the doing the playing time.

I know I sound really heretical here. But I hate the painting. I wish I could buy a miniature army (of reasonable price) and play the board game.

I was always mostly interested into Warhammer RPG. When other RPG people asked me what it is my summary answer was/is:
"Imagine a world so overrun by dark and evil factions, if they would unite, they would wipe out the remaining 'good' guys in a very short time. Such a dark, grim world makes a wonderful world for adventure and RPG with the threatening atmosphere as there is always something going on at every corner. And all the fighting and darkness left its mark on the 'good' guys which are just a bit less dark and evil then the monsters they fight.
Not a world you want to live in but GREAT for adventure. Not those tidy, neat and clean US fantasy worlds of D&D&Co which remind me more of a Disneyland with good areas and the bad ones, petty much like modern US in a fantasy environment. ;p"
Or the VERY short reply: "Imagine LOTR on steroids and crack."

I haven't done much with warhammer in around 18 years or so but I've just been addicted to listening to you discuss various aspects of the 40k history.

I first discovered Warhammer at my friend's through PC games back in the mid-'90s.
Neither of us was aware of the existence of any miniatures nor tabletop wargaming aspects thereof at the time.
I first learnt of this side of the franchise just like 15 years ago by a lucky accident when I stumbled upon one documentary about this craft-hobby while randomly switching TV channels. I didn't catch the beginning and for a few more years thereafter I was still not aware of the fact that the wargame came first. :-)
Also, my then-reaction was, "Why do the miniatures NOT come already finished (assembled and painted) from the factory? This therefore must be a very niche hobby since the company likely misses out on many potential customers who would otherwise be interested in the collecting and the wargame".
    :-D :-D
    Please don't kill me!! :-)

Just to quickly address those "other questions":
_Is Warhammer for kids?_ No, because...
_How much does it cost?_ Yes.

Got back into the hobby 2 years ago, best decision I've ever made. I've made new friends and made old friendships stronger. You can enjoy it quietly in your office, painting a model or reading rules. Or you can meet up with friends, grab some beers, and get hammered playing 'hammer. Best hobby ever.

You know what sucks? Being rased in a differnt world ( the hood lol) then growing up and discovering these awsome games that i didnt even know exsisted. Now im in my 30's and have no one who would even entertain the idea of checking out these kinds of games. I try going to a hobby/game store, but then they open at 2 and by 3:30 im surrounded by a sea of teanagers and kids being dropped off by parents asking me what time i close lmao. Its just not the scene for a grown man who DOSNT have questionable morals if you know what i mean, so here i am, lots of d&d books, war hammer models and magic cards, and no one to play with, and being rather oldschool, online play is just confusing and i hate being the guy who is not only still learning the game but still learning the program (roll20 for example.) I wish i had a time machine to go back and build in the community.. now i feel like its just too late...

Can someone please put a video out about what " broken" and "blanced" means and why GW has such h a hard time doing that? Why is it so hard to put out a balanced game w/no need for updates and additions and editions!?!? Please, can someone explain thoroughly!?

Trying to explain warhammer is a lesson in futility, one always grasp a context that needs more context. The god emperor is where most people start to try and explain, but tbh the best place to start is orcs. Once you ve established a base line of crazy then you can gauge on what tone you should go to explain further. Orcs to crazy? Explain the Astarte's and the how orcs arent even all that scary. Not impressed by war crazed psykers who are more like a plague than species? Explain chaos, and the abundance of waysthe universe can kill the fuck out of you.

i don't have a very big budget, so buying the models can be very complicated. So, i 3d print them. But i would like to play games with them, but since they don't come with their little information paper i don't know how good they are. So i was wondering if there was some sort of website where i could find what their stats are, and also if i could play with them at events or competitions with other people?
