      The bigger irony is bartenders that still drink, shows how long youve really been bartending. When is the last time you saw one of these old guys behind the bar drinking a beer. There is a reason. All you kids at tales are so funny. The biggest thing is youll all move on to something else eventually. I was here before, here during, and ill still be here bartending long long after any of these guys in the video will.

    I am 34 and have worked behind every kind of bar that you can imagine since I was 18. Personally, I can see where these guys are coming from, except... I appreciate the idea of "showy" bartending because it works in the right environment. I also respect traditional bartending because it appeals to drinkers that don't like all the fuss and nonsense.
    Basically, learn your craft and be adaptable. Tailor your service to the CUSTOMER. That is the LITERAL definition of "customer service". Forget about how amazing you are and think about how you would want to be served in that environment. Don't get me wrong. You WILL serve aresholes. Just don't feel as if you're better than the person who is literally paying your wages. You're not. If you disagree... find another job my friend. You're not a true bartender.

      I don't think it's so much about things like that, that assist a BT in doing their job, I think they're talking more about the wank factor. That there are really shitty bartenders out there that do shit like that to appear important or sophisticated, but lack the essentials of just being a decent bar tender and having a detailed understanding of different kinds of alcohol and how to serve them, and hide behind stupid shit to mask it, and all the while delivering terrible customer service.
      One of the women lays it down straight "we serve people booze". I mean, it's not that it doesn't take some level of skill, but seriously....it ain't rocket science either LOL!

    I've never related to this more. I work as a bartender in a small town in Iowa, we recently hired a "mixologist" from a slightly larger (yet still small) town in Iowa. You're a bartender dude. I've had people call me a mixologist, I reply "thanks, but I'm just a bartender"

  • @kevinfager.

    I spend a fraction of my time learning some "flair" at home that I haven't even used while working and zero time on appearance really bc I wear a uniform but even if I go to a casual bar someday I'd just wear what I would wear when I go out. Well...when I try to look nice. On a date perhaps. Bc you are handling people's drinks...you can't look like a schlub. Aside from that I spend 99 % of my time learning new drinks and tinkering with them till they're good. I don't think there's any thing wrong with any of that. You're at work. You're learning skills and putting effort in to add to someone's experience and ultimately make better tips. The goal of anything in life is to grow right? I also read books from people that have been doing it forever and are very successful with a ton of classic recipes...Some of them should be left to die probably but a lot of them are canon. Sooo....don't really see a problem there either. The hipster thing...yeah. Some are douches in a different wrapper but you're full of shit if you say you don't have a style or put thought into your look. I have a beard bc I think I'm better looking with it and I have a non masculine chin. Big whoop.

    I agree with some of the things they say like the star-tenders. I can’t stand those, I’ve worked with bartenders like that. They are so annoying.
    With the fashion I’m 50/50, where I work I have to wear black pleated slacks, rolled sleeve button up, and black vest. That’s just the uniform I am required to wear. Believe me, I’d love to go to work in a t-shirt and skinny jeans but I can’t. But if you have the freedom to wear what you want in your bar and if everyone is wearing a shirt and jeans while you’re wearing a dress shirt, bow tie and suspenders I’d look at you weird too honestly.

    Funny thing about being a bartender . most of the mixologist or whatever who can do all these artasin cocktails are good at what they do and its a specific knowledge they have but throw them into a dive bar that's 5 deep on a Friday night where people are ordering shots and regular mix drinks and they would not be able to hang . or vice versa. Not all of course cus some have worked both settings but a lot I have meet have always been craft cocktail specialist who take 3 minutes to make a drink . on the other hand you have busy club or dive bartenders who can make 20 regular drinks in that time .

    • @karlapixler2925
      @karlapixler2925 6 лет назад +1

      clint brunke YEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!! I've seen it and had to deal with "professional" bartenders in my dive bars. They never last an entire shift. Fetal is a real position and they are always in it about midway through rush. I will throw them in a stool and let them whimper while I finish out the shift. It's better for every one that way.

    • @karlapixler2925
      @karlapixler2925 6 лет назад

      clint brunke And I would never pretend to be able to perform mixology on the same level they can. I mean, I can make a mean craft cocktail, but I don't want to have to do that day in and day out. I prefer the mad rush and mayhem of a crazy dive bar at rush. I will pour an entire bottle of booze into the right amount of shot glasses for a group of regulars who love me and my bar any day of the week before I have to muddle an entire bag of lemons for the perfect group of lemon drops (which often happens to me as well) for a group of pretentious mid-range women on Blues Night. Just my preference.

    • @JaimeRosario884
      @JaimeRosario884 5 лет назад +2

      yeah but those orthdontists, oral surgeons, and the rest specialties you mentioned, actually do very different things that you are not even allowed to practice if youre not certified because someones health would be in danger. These so called "mixologists" and "cocktologist" and whatever do the same shit that every other bartender does, mix different liquors with other ingredients, but they actually do it slower. They cant last a whole shift on a busy bar a friday night, not even with a barback and a second bartender helping them. So instead of being called a shitty bartender, they prefer to be called a "mixologist", of course. Whats next, firemixology? "I do firemixology, my drinks all have lame ass fire on them."

    I do get some of the points here but this is pretty pretentious.
    Some people take pride in their work, and view food and drink more like art than just food or drink. It is the difference between someone who truly loves what they do, and has the creative spark to go above and beyond and someone who is there just for a paycheck.
    Yes, at the end of the day you are giving someone booze, but there are people who appreciate the quality of the product they use and want to showcase it in a creative way. It is no different than a chef experimenting with exotic ingredients just for the fun of it.
    For example, I like manhattans. If i find a really delicious small batch rye whisky, I may seak out the small batch and artisanal vermouth, and bitters. This is not because I want to be fancy or some shit, but because I genuinely love the craft and want to experiment with new things.
    Take some pride in your work and maybe you won't be so jaded.

    As a customer, in the city that I live in, the bartenders look bored and some look young. You got to pry them away from their cell phones, ( similar to gas stations cashiers) because he or she becomes so shy, or they pretend to be. I f the customer is another race ( skin color) the customer service lately has gone done. I thought at first it was because they were friends, but when they talk you can tell they don't know each other. A lady bartender seemed nice at first as she says hello, but once conversation kicks in she gets rather aloof. This can be when it's busy or slow. Some bars , like the pool halls Lack good food. so you end up leaving for that reason.

Any bartender who fails at this one simple thing needs to find a different craft. It's not that complicated ppl.

    If I'm at some bar where 95% of the guest are drinking bottle beer and a shot I can let this slide, but if I'm at a cocktail bar and you have to google how to make a baybreeze then you shouldn't be in the position you are making the kind of money you do.

      Tool4APC2012 There are hundreds and hundreds of drinks and perhaps (or obviously) they don't get that one a lot. Maybe one shouldn't pay 10 times as much for a drink they can make at home if they're going to get pissed at a person for using the tools they have available to make them happy when they have hundreds of other customers they're trying to do the same for of which many are rude and judgmental. I suppose you'd prefer them to wing it or lie and say we just ran out of pineapple?

    Why are bars so loud? Can't have even a shouted conversation. Hmm. Concrete floor, metal ceiling, and brick walls "papered" in big screen TV sets. Noise reflects like a pinball table. Damn. (Yes, I'm old enough to have played pinball, and too much time in loud bars in my youth probably damaged my hearing a bit). Point remains. It's called "accoustics".

    • @sasukeuchiha998
      @sasukeuchiha998 5 лет назад

      Also, if no one ever heard of this, sound affects your sense of taste. Loud noises on planes can drastically lower your satisfaction or sense of taste when eating. The same can be said about the bar. I tasted the same cocktail by the same bartender at different levels of annoyance given the groups they bring in and when you are in a quiet environment, you have it easier when trying to taste what is served.

    But, a mixologist really is different. They're certified for one, at the least a level 1 bar smarts, and they make they're own syrups and bitters for their cocktails. If I'm making tinctures and shit, I feel more like a chemist than a bartender.
