I've covered Dragon Ball primarily for years. And since then I've managed to cover all of One Piece (so far)... And so since I've covered all the
Dragon Ball Films on my channel, it only seems fair to do the same with One Piece! So since all I've read has been Eichiiro Oda's version of the serie,
it will feel strange covering movies that aren't written by him. Will Luffy feel like Luffy? Or how about Zoro, Sanji, Usopp or Nami? Only one way to

You really should at least watch The Episode of Chopper (Movie 9) as it a what-if. Simply put without spoilers, here the crew already has Franky, Robin, & the Thousand Sunny before they visit the Drum Kingdom, there's a second villain, and you would watch the 2014 Special Edition version because of its 15th-anniversary message at the end plus even more footage.

He showed in his first manga video that he was using the big boxsets released by Viz. Chapter 0 was included as a bonus with the second of those boxsets, so he should have it to read.

I started as a Anime only Watcher via onepieceofficial.com so I ended up watching the movies peppered between the Anime eppisodes and T.v Specials without realizing it
It wasn't till Zou that I caught up with the Anime Weely Schedule then read ahead via Magna till I caught up weekly in Magna in Wholecake Island
Because I know there is Oda approved Extras and edits in Anme I never bothered to read 1 to Zou
In fact, since Oda been skipping fights and minor incidents in Wano with intent on Anime fills those gaps in the Story birds for him the Magna only sobs(none of them in Japan...should tell you something) are seriously missing out
The best movie is Film Z.

I can't wait to see Mark's reaction to Strong World, Film Z, Film Gold, and Stampede. Even though they might not be the best story wise (film z and strong world excluded), they are still amazing.
Stampede is overrated in my opinion. A fan art, obviously a lot of people are excited to see everyone together, but it's that and good visual quality, I mean money. Nothing else.
If they would mix that beautiful feeling of seeing all these characters together, with a plot more in the style of Oda and less cliché of those that you find in any anime; it would be something else. Likewise, I understand that it is not something that can be developed in a short sequence. That's why it doesn't seem bad to me.
Maybe I would have really enjoyed it if in my country it was on the big screen, with one-piece readers like me. That would have been fenomenal, and could already found my half orange

think about it, a setting where almost all characters are on one place, if it had what the strength of odas writing then it would become marineford but with even more characters and since odas writing has improved over time it would have a better story than some arcs. it did not have as much hype as marineford or wano, but itd still be greater than many arcs.

@@mostacho8251 I completely agree with you, Stampede isn't really a good movie, but it is what it is supposed to be: A festival to celebrate the 20 years anniversary of the anime. And for that it has brought an All-Stars line-up of every fan favourite character and gave them some action packed screentime, which they very much needed.

I remember being able to actually predict the gender reveal in movie 4 because of how Sanji acted towards the kid. They make a point that it's unusual how nice Sanji was to the kid and even he didn't know why, but knowing Sanji's character, I had very high suspicions that he unconsciously knew the kid was a girl and acted as his Sanji self to be especially considerate and courteous.
But Sani was surprised when it was revealed.

I feel like animal kingdom was surfing on chopper's wave of popularity in japan due to him being a new cute character so toei might have wanted to take advantage of it and highlight chopper's role but didn't really manage to do it

I think that, while the One Piece will be a real treasure (probably some kind of ancient weapon that will be destroyed at the end), the "the true treasure were the yadaydayda" moment will be there at the end. Like, after everything happened and the One Piece getting destroyed/lost, ruffy will say something similar, being coherent to his dream o becoming the king of pirates and having enjoyed the entire journey he spent whit his crew, friends, rivals and the people he met. Basically a compromise between a good moral but with the idea of an actual fullfilment
The one piece is luffy trying to get everyone together to party and sings binks sake, or the Manga one piece.

Dead End is a favourite of mine too, The scene where Luffy's hat gets ripped gives me chills to this day.
Finally, One Piece movie 4, criminally underrated and the best movie of One Piece getting some widespread recognition.

@@wolfwood770 Nah. Memory loss arc is really good. Builds up Robin as as she is the newest member and the crew needs to get to know each again through her (she being the only one with memory). I remember this making Water 7 and Enies' Lobby better for me, and the straw-hats reintroducing each other for the first time lead to many funny moments.

Mark, while most of the recap series are bad, the Drum Island one is vastly different compared to the others. I'll list TWO changes that make it interesting to watch. (Although you can skip some sections like Chopper's flashback once it gets to him and hiralucke)
1. Franky is there and involved in the story.
2. Wappol has been 'upgraded' and some fans think he is actually stronger than Blackbeard if he ever applied himself.
The others aren't worth watching, especially Alabasta, but Drum Island at least changes things up a bunch to become more a "What if" story than a recap.
After the movies he’s gonna have to watch the 4kids dub. Then he’ll have covered all the one piece material he can.

Feels weird seeing so many people vouching for GOLD, I swear last I checked that movie was like just alright. No clue where the sudden surge of support for it came from.
I think it's way overhyped how long it is to read. Even if you read 50 chapters a week, which is probably 4ish hours, you can be caught up in 20 weeks, which is less than 5 months. And 4 hours a week isn't much at all.
No matter how long it takes you cannot deny it takes longer to catch up then 99% of manga.

2nd Movie: Both action and plot are a bit more exciting than that of the previous movie for having more secondary battles (there are four mini-bosses instead of one) and the whole super weapon plan feels more epic than just looking for hidden treasure. Of course the whole thing is still quite simple since after their initial defeat by being unprepared, the good guys go to the offence and own everything. There is also that damn fuss with the kid asking the heroes to help out. They tried to make it look a bit tragic by having the population unwilling to resist the bad guys for not wasting all the years they spent on making the device. Yet all the resolution to this issue was just Luffy trashing everything and saying “There, I ruined your life’s work, so stop complaining and start from scratch.” Very weak I must say; normal people would flip if you do that to them.
So you will just watch this for the action scenes, which are not bad at all. They are more in numbers than in the first movie and since the enemies are all devil fruit users that use booby traps and sneak attacks which makes them have a lot more fancy powers. Plus, they have a motif around card symbols and gambling, so there is a vague identity trait here that follows a pattern. There is even a minor character that has a grudge against Zoro for an earlier defeat to build up some cheap excitement. As for the big boss, Bear King seemed to be undefeatable until he used the super weapon on Luffy. Just for no reason than ending the battle, Luffy manages to reflect back a bullet three times his size and wins the day. I didn’t like how he won with no real strategy other than having infinite stamina and reflecting what was supposed to be beyond human capabilities. Cheap!
Overall: 4.5/10
Fun fact: that bartender in movie 4 reappears in movie 10
The Marine in the Beginning of Movie 4 is also the 2nd in command in the G8 arc :D

Movie 4 it's one of my favorites, I love Shuraya and also the "daily life" crew interactions. I'm a fan of most One Piece movies to be honest. I usually rewatch them when I'm rewatching the anime, and I try to watch the movies along with the timeline of the story.
I love how he played the legend of zelda clock town theme for the one piece clock town theme so nostalgic.
If I remember correctly, there's _one_ fun bit in the third movie (if even that is in there). When Zoro is fighting a martial artist and Sanji a swordsman, they both remark that they're constantly butting heads with someone much tougher (each other). That's just fun to me for some reason.

I've been watching the series since 2004 and I haven't seen all of the movies. That said, I know many aren't worth watching.
"Its more than worth checking out for the character interactions alone." sums up my feelings about all the One Piece anime fillers and movies.

I did not expect this, but this is so awesome! I think Ive only watched the first movie and a few of the newer ones, so I'll have to catch up by watching the rest, but I'm still super excited for this.
Movie 9 ain't a recap TNM, it's a what if scenario that definitely offers more when compared to Movie 8. I'd suggest at least a short review such as your thoughts on the differences and what you felt worked and didn't. Looking forward to Movie 6 review regardless!

Honestly, I really love One Piece: The Movie, just because it's lovely to see the Straw Hats in traditional, pre-digital cel animation but on a decent budget. Going back and watching East Blue is rough sometimes just because of how simplistic the art and movement can be. But The Movie looks like how you'd expect a One Piece anime to look if the manga was way shorter, completed in the 90s, and animated as one solid season after it was already done.

One thing I genuinly liked about the Sanji and Zoro fights in the 3rd movie were the ending lines for both of them, as Sanji says to the swordsman he just beat that 'he (Zoro) would call them (the swords the swordman used) shit' while Zoro said to the melee opponent he just fought that 'his (Sanji's) kicks would put yours to shame' or something along those lines, paraphrasing a lot here. But either way it's a really cool moment showing that despite constantly fighting the two actually have a sort of bond at this point, even just a few weeks in universe of travelling together.

THE 4TH MOVIE IS AMAZINGGGGG! I've seen all of them and my favorites are Strong World, then the Adventure of Dead End, then Film Gold!! The Adventure of Dead End feels the most classically One Piece, wish it had a dub so I could put it in the background more often. I'm so glad someone else loves the opening pirate island-hole in the wall bar scene as much as I do! It's just so- PIRATEY!

Damn, I watched all this movies like 10 years ago and just one time, I don't remember cookies of it. See this review is so nostalgic and also weird cuz everything fell new at same time.

1st Movie: In all, it is quite the passable movie. The story is too simple and even out of sync with the point it’s supposed to take place, while the action, as flashy as it may be, lacks any real excitement once you realize the protagonist has plot armour.
Overall: 4/10
Good to see that Mark is also a man of culture with that ranking of Dead End Adventure. I'll be honest though, I didn't make the Crocodile connection until he pointed it out.
3rd Movie: This is by far the most unimpressive premise of all the movies since there is absolutely nothing grand scaled going on here. Ok, supposed the bad guy is going to be super powerful if he finds the horns but even after he succeeds he is nothing before Luffy’s plot armour. Just imagine that although Oda takes ideas from these movies into the canon story later on, there was anything worth to tribute here, since everything is so damn simple in terms of themes. There are many islands with jungles and weird monsters in canon anyway.
In reality the whole movie is dedicated to the latest addition to the crew, Chopper (and his voice actress). It even tries to build a sort of drama around his personality where he finds a place to call home. There are many animals like himself there and he had the chance to leave the crew and stay there for a happy life. Ok, it is clear that he won’t in the end but supposed the drama is there to make us feel sad or something.
As unimpressive as the premise may be, the artwork makes up for it somehow by being extremely detailed and weird. I mean, damn, there are so many colours and weird animals in here to give you a seizure. The screen is constantly filled with a hundred things to look at and there is even a weird orchestra of villains that mesmerize you with their song. It all feels very quirky for a shounen adventure and I guess that is what makes this movie eye-catchy but otherwise boring for most of the target audience. The action is after all closer to crazy than cool and personally I didn’t like them at all. And the monsters felt like ugly aliens so I almost ended up hated them. So in all, it is not just another passable movie but also something you will most likely dislike in overall.

Mark, I reckon you should cover the 9th movie. It does, for sure, recap Chopper’s origin story but there are major changes to the story. Including, but not limited to, a new extra villain, extra Straw Hats that weren’t in the original arc yet, and even a certain Luffy technique used, that’s at least three major arcs too early. It’s worth a watch for these extras alone. Plus Choppers Drum Island arc fits much better into a film than the Alabasta arc would into a movie.
