I walked into a bar in Palm Beach, FL in the middle of a weekday afternoon. Ordered a brandy OF. The bartender said, "What part of Wisconsin are you from?" Confused, I said, "Why do you ask?" He replied, "I've made exactly 2 brandy OF's this year, and both people were from Wisconsin."
"I don't care what ya think, I just care what I drink" thats good life advice! Hey Charlie, im an Illinois native but im moving up to West Bend. Hope to see ya someday! Love your content and your Midwest wisdom!
LOL! That's how I ended up running the bar at the restaurant I worked at in college- I was the ONLY one on-staff who could make a decent old fashioned. 3 months after I got hired as a waiter I was managing the service bar. 🤣
Bartender here for 30 years. Looks good to me. Worked with a " mixologist" once, he tried to tell me I was wrong for adding the "squirt". He didn't last long. The only thing I would change is upping that cherry game. Ya gotta get the luxardos!
Temporarily living outside of Wisconsin. No one makes Old Fashions with "squirt" except my husband and myself. Didn't know about the muddling part. Thx! Go Packers and ...
I use Squirt with all my liquor mixes. I am no mixologist or bartender or anything bar-related but something about Squirt that makes it wonderful with every Tequila ,Whiskey or Rum I've tried.
As this was loading I said out loud. “If you don’t have your buck knife Charlie we’re gonna have words.” Cheers to the true recipe, and cheers to Grampa Bob!
From Missouri but lived for a couple of years in Madison where it felt like the go-to drink was a Brandy Old-Fashioned Sweet. I have not seen one of these since I moved away from Wisconsin, but now might need to make one or two this weekend.
That's because the rest of the states surrounding them keep their tom foolery from escaping. You're Welcome. and if some of it got out, it was probably Iowa's fault.
Lifelong Wisconsin natives know not to order an old fashioned outside of Wisconsin. My friend ordered one when we were in Michigan. They had to get the drink recipe book out. I told her, you're good to be sorry. She was.
Grandpa Bob's paint brush is brilliant!! bought a car years ago where the previous owner used a tennis ball. when it touched his hood, it was good. only problem? after years of that, there was a spot on the hood where rubbed the clear coat off.
I have a drink that I call 'The perfect Martini'. The recipe is as follows: 1. Take gin, vermouth, and olives and throw that crap in the trash where it belongs. 2. Pour whiskey.
It is a criminal offense against brandy (and all other liquors) to put ice in ON TOP OF THE BOOZE. Everyone knows that the booze is POURED OVER THE ICE. Straighten out, Charlie!
I'm a big fan of a traditional Old Fashioned and I've never heard of a Wisconsin/Brandy Old Fashioned until today. I don't know if it'll be quite my taste, but I'll have to try it sometime!
What about the nail for garnish and the hammer to bust up the ice? Charlie's video with his mom on how to make a potato salad was a good one as well. Huge fan, keep up the good work, greetings from Washington County WI.
I didn't know your Grandpa Bob but he sounds like a real one. (to be fair I don't know you either but it sure sounds like I do considering I grew up not even half an hour from you)
A pickled asparagus stalk and orange wedge has always been my garnish of choice. Pickled mushrooms and brussel sprouts complement a Wisconsin old fashion quite nicely as well.
Don't forget the pickled mushrooms those are awesome in Brandy and whiskey old fashions. Bartending many weddings back in the 80s started at the age of 13 for the family biz in Central Wisconsin
I am here to tell you a Wisconsin transplant to the west coast has their work cut out for them to find an honest old fashioned. Not the new old fashioned mind ya. A joke I tell is that there’s this bar in Wisconsin that advertises an Old Fashioned made 12 different ways- only one of them is correct! As for me I’m of the I’ll that likes them made Charlie’s way but in a tall glass with a whole can of 7-up. A refreshing “punch.”
My now adult kiddo is learning to make my drinks for me. We have two versions of the Old Fashioned, the quick and dirty (AKA simple) which doesn't bother with garnishes or orange slices (for when mom is having a BAD day and needs an Old Fashioned stat) and something a lot like this one but with simple syrup because we can't find sugar cubes.
Buy 3 or more bottles and get FREE shipping. Excellent Brandy and I've tasted Charlie's cocktail several times and it's a winner. Sending love to Grandpa Bob from Buffalo
Wolski's?! Good god that was the first bar i ever snuck into during my MSOE days in the 80s. I just walked in, handed the guy my real ID with all the others in our group and he let us all in. 5 minutes later he came over and said 'awwwright, which one of you guys tried to slip me a '67 ID?" We all denied it and pulled our cards back out and just waves it off and said naaahhh, i believe yas" i got the bumper sticker "i closed wolskis" that night. No car to put it on, though!
My dad just passed last year at 98 and we will never take down the green guiding tennis ball on a rope he placed in the garage to let us know we are in far enough.
I reminisce about Brandy OF sweets and no one outside of WI has any clue what they are. Whisky old fashion sours have some clout over in CA but if you talk about Brandy they look at you like you're an alien. Hence I feel so seen by this. Love the buck knife😂
What's with the spritz? That reminds of a famous story about Harry and Bess Truman. (Old Fashions were their favorite drink.) Shortly after they moved into the White House, Bess complained that no one knew how to make a proper Old Fashion at the White House. The kitchen staff tried and tried, but Bess was still unhappy. Finally, in frustration they gave her a glass of straight bourbon. Bess was elated. "Now that a real Old Fashion," Bess declared. 😅
The son-in-law enjoyed a few old fashions at the latest brother-in-law‘s wedding. He has seven brothers in law, his wife was the princess in the family. Anyway, really enjoyed this video, thanks!
Okay now that's a neat video. Except wtf is the russian flag doing in the background there??? Look in the mirror right around his head it's right there and it's bugging me out.
As a russian I can't not correct you ukrainian flag is blue on top yellow at the bottom and I see that pattern only in two packs at the low end of the row so that's another L for Charlie unfortunately. Great vid still.)

Congrats on convertin’ to Wisconsinite 🤝
@@CharlieBerensliterally not the response I was expecting.
You won't regret it. I moved to Milwaukee over 20 years ago. I love this town. Still can't bring myself to go with brandy. I like my OF bourbon sweet
That's your new merch logo saying, Charlie!
Definitely need more Bears fans in Wisconsin!
Grew up in WI, bartended in AZ and now ID. People ask for this drink and I'm the only one who knows how to make it. This is valuable content. Cheers.
What City & bar in ID ❓ I’ve got relatives in ID Falls . They can’t find a WI Old Fashion anywhere.
LOL! That's how I ended up running the bar at the restaurant I worked at in college-
I was the ONLY one on-staff who could make a decent old fashioned.
3 months after I got hired as a waiter I was managing the service bar. 🤣
Charlie berens making a Wisconsin old fashioned is about the most Wisconsin thing I can think of
I laughed out loud at the paintbrush.
Legacy that lives on

Luxardo's from Italy are a must! Yeah, they're expensive as all get out...
Yes! And luxardos are the best!

Non Midwestern people finding out what Squirt is has to be the funniest thing ever. They just don't understand why we like it so much
Perfect brandy old fashioned sour. Every other old fashioned style will have the crew questioning if you are a FIB.
quick question: Should the buck knife be cleaned, or is the blood from the last time I skinned one ok?
Depends on taste, nothing wrong with a little extra protein and flavor
Both are technically Natural Flavors.
A common ingredient in many foods
@@YamiYume69 Alright, thanks. I just might try that sometime.
Gives it that certain je ne sais quoi.
I recognize that back bar! The one and only Wolski’s!!!

If they don’t got a buck knife, it ain’t me

There's the Old Fashioned on the Capital Square if you haven’t been back in Madcity in a while. Cheers! FYI.
couple 'tree yeers*
You mean make *two or tree
Brandy is such an underrated drink. For complexity, it gets super expensive. But for a normal cheap sweet grape liquor, it's good
Grandpa Bob's paint brush is brilliant!! bought a car years ago where the previous owner used a tennis ball. when it touched his hood, it was good. only problem? after years of that, there was a spot on the hood where rubbed the clear coat off.
Ya, do the windshield instead. Worst case it scrubs the bugs.
Its suppose to touch the Windshield, not the paint. Jeez Louise.
Charlie taught me something today. I didn’t know what muddling was. Love old fashions.
Don’t you DARE muddle the rind
Charlie, Where do we go to Buy I know I saw boxes of Brandy stocked up. Is it available in Nebraska?
I'm going with probably not, but make the pilgrimage and also pickup some Spotted Cow.
If a place doesn't have it, ask them to get it.
I have a drink that I call 'The perfect Martini'. The recipe is as follows:
1. Take gin, vermouth, and olives and throw that crap in the trash where it belongs.

Wisconsins State Drink, Bird, Flag, and other stuff...all in a glass!

I loved the video, but that knife needs to be sharpened.
You think he should be handling a sharp knife? 😂

Treated my Illinois neighbor to a proper Wisconsin old fashion a while back and ruined him. He can’t drink them any other way now!

We need a show down by Chicago! Like in Schaumburg or Rosemont.
When I saw Charlie last month I had 3 of his old fashioneds! Great show and a great drink!!!!
If it don't squirt, it don't work 😅.
😳🤔 Hell ya, send me a bottle and i'll give it try! 👍👍👍
Hey Charlie, have you picked up one of the new premium buck knives? I got my pops one for his birthday.
You forgot to wipe the knife clean on your jeans!
The olive out of my dad's old fashion when we were out to dinner was a treat! Now they go in every mixed drink!
olive on an oldfashioned? Controversial but willing to try it
Already lost me at the Brandy, so...
Wisconsin old fashion. Sweet or sour. Yep.👍love da videos

Muddling is the best way. If you are at a big event and everyone wants an old fashioned, it tough to get one. SO order a double old fashion
Love it... only change I basically make is using Squirt Zero, and two cherries in the muddle instead of one.
Need Jolly good sour pow'r 🔋 for the floater 😋

Everyone I've ever met (in 20+ years of bartendending) just calls that a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. I've never heard it called a Brandy Old Fashioned.
surprised he didn't garnish it with a pickle or use sauerkraut
No cause those dont belong in drinks
0:25 hehe... my grandpa did this with a tennis ball, which is also still up despite my grandmother (the one whose car it was for) having passed.
I challenge you to do how to make a Harvey Walbanger.
Is that a Wisconsin specific thing? Because I grew up in Minnesota, and I drink Bourbon Old Fashioneds, like God intended.
Yum. Looks great. Can't wait to try it out. Where to get Berens brandy?
Just googled it, you can buy it online. There's a store 10 miles away from me that has it.
Yeah nope. I gots to tell ya thats not olive it.
I’ll take whatever
da hell is this, if someone game me a drink with only this much brandy I would be angry.
Where can i buy the brandy? Buying it online is kinda spendy after shipping.

has to be blue cheese stuffed olives
How's a muddler not a pestle? Or is it?
What are the bitters?
What did you ‘squirt’ on it ( uk)
