The dad standing in the aisle at the store talking to the random guy and taking forever is so unbelievably accurate. My Dad owned an independent paint, wallpaper & hardware store in Chicago. When he got older, he worked at JC Licht. All the contractors followed him because he knew everything about paint (he could mix color without the computerized system) and hardware, and he was a no bs kind of guy with a sarcastic sense of humor. When he decided to retire, corporate called to try to convince him not to retire. "Why are you retiring?" My dad: "Because I'm old!" In his older years, we'd go to various Ace Hardware stores all the time (he'd point out which ones were better than others) or Menards. To this day, I love finding old hardware stores - the ones with narrow aisles that still sell nails and screws individually from large barrels - just to hang out. I miss my totally midwest Dad, who knew how to fix everything. 😢
