  • This is a relatively common failure on these units.

    I enjoy watching your videos and appreciate your knowledge on vintage gear. I have a tascam DA30 mk2… I have replaced a belt and a voltage regulator, how ever I can’t seem to get the tape tracking time right.

    Lovely unit. My housemate has the DA-20 version. Buttery smooth and silent mechanism. Considering buying a local DA-20 myself. I've had good luck using DDS tapes which I can find new and cheaply, Sony DGD 120P DDS-2 and Hewlett Packard C5718A DDS-4 tapes both hold well over 5 hours, nearly 6 hours of music on them, and no real issues. Do you have any opinions on the Panasonic professional studio DAT units? I know Fostex used Tascam mechanisms.

    TASCAM made great affordable home recording gear back in the '80's. Today, we just use digital audio workstations and a computer. Although, digital "distortion" (clipping) sounds nasty compared to analogue distortion.

      @12voltvids  4 месяца назад

      With 100 db dynamic range there is no reason to clip. You should be peaking at -12 on average so no chance of over quantization.

    Lurking fan of your channel for a long time, I really appreciate your videos! On to the subject "The insulator 2 x more expensive than the regulator it's insulating), LOL
    Side note: After seeing many of your videos, I realized that one of your most important tool is..................... THE SCISSORS! :)

    15:24 lol that notification sound with the fart at the end. Is it me, or are all electronics technicians immature? 😆And with the garage door opener thing, wouldn't it be a better idea that you don't keep the opener in the car, rather in the house? Yeah, it's a PITA to remove it, but at least the stupid dope broke in to the car for absolutely no reason... which is even more hilarious! You've inspired me over the years to keep improving my fault finding; I used to be a service technician, but by no means an "expert". Keep doing what you're doing and telling funny story monologues.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 месяца назад

      The garage door opener is actually built into the car. It's a physical button on the roof. Sure I could deprogram it but what would be the point in that. Even though i don't park in the garage as it's the shop that's generally the way i access the house and my ev charge cord is stored inside because when i left it outside one day I just happened to turn on my camera and see a strange car in the driveway and my charge cord connected to it. Someone had put my address into plugshare and my address was listed as a someone that allows free charging. So the cord goes into the garage.

      As to the text notification sound everyone has their own sound. Just like everyone has their own ring tone. My daughter's ring / text is Daffy duck and my son's is the redneck ringtone. That one is a generic, meaning not someone in my call list so it's not important that I check it now.

    Don't cars have alarms anymore? Are they legal still? Or is it that people ignore car alarms? Or do crooks disable the alarm?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 месяца назад

      Nobody has car alarms anymore. My car has a factory system that honks the horn if the door is opened when locked but if someone breaks a window or forces down the window which is what many do. Push down hard enough and most windows will move. Neighbour had a break in a few months ago. The crook had been watching the lock picking lawyer I guess. They picked the lock on the front door and entered in the middle of the night. Never went to the bedrooms where the owner was sleeping. Took some stuff namely a few paintings but their pay dirt was the car keys that were hanging by the front door. Made off with both cars and the house keys.
      How do I know this? Because i was there a few days later installing an alarm system with cameras. A little late I would say. Lost a high end Mercedes and Lexus SUV. Sure it's insured but deductibles on each car and house policy ended up costing a few grand and another couple to get all the locks rekeyed because the crooks had the keys. Had high security locks installed this time which is not cheap. People across the street had cameras but if course too far away, 4 rolled up with a get away car. 3 went in and were only in the house a few minutes. Came out with stuff 2 took off in get away car and other 2 took the cars from the driveway. At least they didn't get the Porsche in the garage buy only because it didn't have an engine in it! Lol. Now if someone tried that here the entire neighbourhood would be awake as I have 2 30 watt sirens, strobe lights and a bunch of cameras. Nope they see my house Al lit up at night and just move on lol.

      Yes, most modern cars have alarms; however, most people ignore them.

      @@12voltvids and even if it had an alarm that made a noise; in the middle of the night, most people would ignore the thing going off, anyway. "Oh, yeah, it's just XYZ's car alarm going falsely off again. zzzZZZzzz.". Complacency is a thing, now, unfortunately.

    Okay. I don’t mean to bother you here but I have no choice. I am just asking for a bit of parts info on an Aiwa beta vcr unit that I got from eBay. It is an Aiwa AV-50M. It loads the tape but does not eject and the tape does not get unthreaded. The loading tape ring loads fine but as stated does not unthread the tape so the load ring retracts and then stops and retreads to full threaded position. I’ve cut the tape and it does eject the tape that way, but it does not play, rewind, or fast forward. Looking into the reel assembly I found that the idler uses a spur gear attached to a motor. The plastic spur gear is broken. That gear is very small. Possibly 4 or 5mm outer diameter with a bore hole of about 3mm. I have had the incredible fortuna of finding the original service manual of eBay. Unfortunately, in the exploded views for this model, the gear that drives the idler is not identified. Would have been great if it did and I am not familiar with how this spur gear is label by part number by Aiwa. From the pieces that are left of the original, now broken, spur gear or idler gear, I say it has 11 to 12 teeth. This might be the problem so I am hoping to fix it and restore this beta to working order. Thank you for your time and keep on fixing.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 месяца назад +1

      Know nothing about Aiwa beta machines. I assume probably incorrect that it was made by Sony but without knowing the chassis used I have no idea. It might not have been made by Sony however. Aiwa was a sister company of Sony but for the Aiwa products I have seen they are completely different from any Sony product.

      @@12voltvids Thank you for that reply. I now have an idea of what to do to find this part. Loved that last video of that vcr that wouldn't stay alive. lol Also, forgot that Sony owned a large percentage of Aiwa.

    Just use kapton tape as insulator if you have one.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 месяца назад

      Not necessary on these ones.Would still need the plastic insert for the screw.

    • @AstrosElectronicsLab
      @AstrosElectronicsLab 4 месяца назад

      As long as the center pin of the regulator is ground and the heatsink is connected to the same point, it doesn't matter about insulation. If it was an LM317T or a transistor, that'd be a different story.

    • @AstrosElectronicsLab
      @AstrosElectronicsLab 4 месяца назад

      Also, Kapton tape is fine, but you would still require the nylon bushing for the screw to pass through, as the screw would contact the metal tab of the device. You might as well have an isolator kit at this point. I'm not a fan anymore of the mica washers (which are practically glass and if they crack can cause a short), and prefer the greaseless gray washers and nylon bush arrangement.
