    Surfers crack me up. They try to promote chill vibes, aloha mentality, unity, peace, etc.
    YET, are the most elitist and clicky group ever. They run around like lil gang groups (not on my turf I’m a local! lol).
    I get it needs rules, boundaries, etc.
    it’s just ironic.

    • @Sparky00024
      @Sparky00024 2 месяца назад +42

      Not really what he said… he said when people come to his home break and don’t have etiquette then locals will use localism as a tool keep order…. In other words you don’t take turns and think you are entitled to every wave with no turns then they are going to teach you by doing what you are doing to everyone else back to you. He never said he is just going to drop in on non locals every time and that since he is a local he deserves it. He said since they are the locals they need to keep order at their spot so it doesn’t turn into a Malibu situation. Skateparks work the same way, the asshole is the person who comes to the spot thinking they don’t need to share and causes issues that push the locals to resort to keeping order. No one owns the spot, but you can’t expected to go up in a spot and have no etiquette with no repercussions just because no one owned it…. If you are in the grocery store with a full cart and just decide to cut the whole line of people who have already been waiting then you are gonna piss everyone off…. It’s common sense, this is not much different other than the fact the person cutting typically does it multiple times before the locals finally say ok, no more of this prick. You have the idea of what localism is as all wrong. It isn’t bullying, if anything the stingy mf who thinks sharing doesn’t apply to him is the initial bully. I’m sure someone probably said something as well by the time everyone decides fuck it we are dropping in on him everytime. The person this happens to usually had a chance to realize what they were doing was frowned upon but continued anyways because “you don’t own the wave” “I can ride whatever one I want”. It’s simple take turns and you won’t be treated like a dick. Sharing is caring.

      Most breaks I’ve been to, the experienced surfers share the waves and follow etiquette and it’s pretty easy to spot the newbies. It’s a non-issue at most spots as you can just surf around them, and they’re too new/in survival mode to understand etiquette. You can teach the mediocre surfers proper etiquette so they don’t drop in on you, typically just takes one or two heads up and they get it.
      With that said, Malibu, this spot is a joke. It is a great wave, but you just have way too many ppl there on a given day. It’s always madness.

      Everyone should have to pass a surfing etiquette test before they are allowed to surf in an actual lineup, with actual surfers🤷‍♂️ I used to point out to kooks and learners what the rules are. And dish out polite shaming and punishment to people that should know better. These days, it’s such a kookfest. You get lambasted by the whole lineup for trying to explain to people what the rules are and why they exist. All of a sudden, you😮the bad guy. Even though you’re the one getting repeatedly burnt by a bunch of kooks going straight ahead, falling off in your face, often kicking their board at you in the process. But somehow you’re the bad guy!!?? 🤷‍♂️ Talk about a role reversal! Kooks run the lineups now. Its a total joke. Don’t get me started on dads pushing their kids into waves straight in front of people already up and riding! 😮 I mean WTF!! If that’s who’s teaching you to surf, well then you’re fuc$ed basically from the start aren’t you?? 🤷‍♂️ And surf schools. They don’t teach etiquette at all!! • @anotherworldviewispossible
      @anotherworldviewispossible 4 месяца назад +1

      @@woodnbikesI agree. However, there's people who don't adhere to the proper wave etiquette, as you can see in the video.
      Since there's multiple points, and a few different take-offs within each point/section - on occasion one looks back and concludes that a given rider isn't going to make it past where you're at, or at least as far as you're about to, if you go... At that point, given the size and ruthlessness of the crowd, at some point pragmatic decisions get made.
      If you're good at it - you can read the lineup, and know whos-who, and avoid letting a good wave go to waste. If you're not - you wind up ruining Koa's wave, as we saw here, or perhaps one of the many great surfers who ride there, more often.

    As a dude that grew up surfing in the insanely packed Laguna Beach local spots that even the tourists managed to find, sometimes you gotta share a line, doubly so if it’s a long one. You’re not alone out there, we all need to actually be chill and watch for each other on both sides of the break. If you can’t handle being mellow, and your fellow stick-standers can’t rely on you to have their backs, maybe the ocean isn’t the best place for you.

You don’t get haoles dropping in on your wave unless they want some respect beaten into them. He's lived there his whole life and he and his brothers are locals there, grew up surfing first point second point, places like Zuma.. They live right up the street.
    Anyway, we used to surf Malibu together and he told me that this is how you surf Malibu...
    A. You have to share waves and Malibu.
    B. You have to be willing to fight for your waves at Malibu.
    C. The way he and his brothers would do it is they just dropping on fools so the brother could get the wave. Like blocking.
    But that's how you do it at Malibu.

      We were County Line locals. My best friend's brother, Big Ray Gann owned the Line Shack and Pacific Visions surf shop built onto the burger store across from Neptunes Net. Those were heady days and there was no better time or place in the world compared to So Cal surf scene in the 80s.
      Back in the 80s, there were days County Line was pumping 5+, on a weekday afternoon and not a soul was out at the point or north of the point. Rights, freight train, rail grabber lefts, fully barrelled. Those were the days. Back then Secos was considered crowded if over 15 guys were out in the line up.
      Angie Reno was the guy I wanted to meet at Malibu if you know what I mean. And rumor had it, Bob Dylan had guys that would squeeze people out of the water in the Colony area if Dylan was out in the water.
