My daughter was an addict, and died in 2005. This song brings awareness and highlights the stigma we, the survivors, live daily. I love U2, and this song is amazing. And on point.
+Casey Compton My Soul Mate was an Addict, I know how you fee Casey. Everytime I hear this song, I think of Him. This is now His and my theme song... :(
I know many people died because of an addiction. But your message just grabbed me and it was like I felt the pain. I know this song for about 25 years listened and played it many times over the years. But lately this song showed up on many different ways into my life. I didn't realise it was a sign. I just discovered I was having an addiction over the last 10-15 years. It wasn't drugs, alcohol or s.x but still, it knocked me down. With respect...
One of the greatest lyrics of all time...."you've got to cry without weeping.....talk without speaking......scream without raising your voice......." So powerful!
cmac You know, I've never really thought deeply about the actual meaning. What is great about those lyrics is the way Bono is stating things that are impossible to do....where you can't do the very essence of what you are trying to do. "Running to Stand Still" also follows this formula and maybe the rest of the lyrics are just background to the ultimate meaning of the song, which now that I think about it, I've always taken to be a sense of futility....of trying to make a major change yet being unable to do so. I love U2's earlier stuff, up to Rattle & Hum but I'm not really familiar with the stuff after that but I think this is one of their most powerful songs. Bono is an incredible lyricist and vocalist and Edge is a genius at providing musical emotion for Bono's lyrics. I've alway felt that U2 deserve their status as "greatest band in the world", something I think a lot of people disagree with.
You know its a monster album when this is considered the 4th or 5th best song on the album (or the side for that matter). It may be the best song on the album. This and Streets are consistent goosebumps.
Keep fighting, my friend, and never give up on yourself. Been fighting the demon for 12 years. Relapsed a year ago. "Fall down seven times, stand up eight."
I’m glad he dedicated it to the men and women of the military. Most folks don’t seem to realize the burden that military members carry. 22 veterans kill themselves day. Many more are struggling with addiction. When I got out of the Air Force, I most certainly struggled with addiction. I’m very grateful that the Good Lord gave me another chance at this life.
We just gave $50 billion to Ukraine with zero oversight on how it is spent, yet veterans like u must rely on private charities begging the public for money to get help & services; a public btw, that already has 50 cents of every federal tax dollar taken yearly & given to the Pentagon for "defense". Something is horribly wrong. Maybe the "brave men & women of the military" need to start speaking out in some way. If someone from the Left speaks up, it's inevitably twisted into a hatred of "the troops" somehow; and if somebody on the Right raises the subject, they are branded as a government hating, Waco conspiracy "wingnut".
a catholic Dubliner, a protestant Dubliner, an Englishman and a Welshman what was the percentage rate of them finding each other let alone being as unbelievably thought provoking as these four men have been..............destiny is amazing isn't it
J A Afaik, they happened to see a sign Larry posted looking for people to jam with. It was, in fact, nothing short of extraordinary that these 3 guys (plus Edge's brother) just happened to spot and choose to respond to that random ad Larry decided to post.
He didn't dedicate it to the army, he dedicated it to the people of the army. And think what the song's about. Think about the title. Running to stand still. -> slaving away at something but not getting anywhere. And the song is about drugs, futility and the waste of human lives. I think it's the perfect song to dedicate to soldiers who "only see one way out". I think it's a prayer for them, that they can find another way out.
Silentalker fair play to you , a deeper understanding . Not preaching to you pal, but do you know it’s loosely about addiction in an area of Dublin blighted by heroin addiction , hence the words” I see 7 towers” , the 7 tower blocks in ballymun . All the best from a north side Dubliner
This song was the one that saved me in the worst moment of my life, it let me cry like I never could, it saved me from that moment that was so difficult for me to get out of. thanks U2
Chokes ya up these lyrics, the music rhythm…Touches your soul..if you don’t feel it, you’re not human..close your eyes and listen, and feel the emotions..
You are not the only one. It has melancholy and a certain ache; another very memorable song from a band that in my opinion has left a big mark in the footprint of music.
Sim a recoverin addict from Dublin and this song is about my old stomping ground, the seven towers are no longer there but the drug and gang violence is alive and well in ballymun on dublins north side...still,some of the most beautiful souls you will ever meet...
Its incredible, what an amazing song. Its unbelievable how the arrangement of this version and the live version on zootv in Sydney makes it like 2 different songs ...genius
I drove from Washington, DC and was there in 2005. And my precious mom drove in from Columbia, Missouri to join me in something about which I was so excited. This song is about a friend of Bono's who died of drug addiction, I believe to heroin. I am so sorry to read, even in the first responses below, that three people know others who died of addition. My best friend in Chicago had a son commit suicide after becoming addicted to and controlled by designer drugs. I pray even now , four years after the previous comment here, that God's Holy Spirit attends people like Casey, Mad As A Hatter, Jimmy, and anyone else below who know this cruel loss first hand.
i've got this on dvd it's genius the part when they start to sing hallelujah that let me think about things that happend in the past and make me feel good! one thing u2 is the living legend my opinion!!!
sem alguma duvida,,esta foi e sera para sempre a maior banda do mundo...e nao me venham ca com tretas..estes sao os u2,,nunca vai haver alguem cono eles...nos amamos os u2,,,amor de portugal
I first learned how to play I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For on guitar without knowing what that song meant. I just liked the sound of it. After that, I learned how to play this without knowing what it meant. I just liked how it sounded. Right before I learned how to play guitar, I was saved and baptized by my church and overcame addiction. Funny how that works. All I know is, it wasn’t me.
This song is goosebumps EVERY TIME. Although this song was about drug addiction... I never interpreted it that way. I always heard HOPE in this song. Thank you Bono for your brilliant and powerful lyrics❤❤❤🦄🦄🦄 It's funny that I misheard "a la la de day" as "I have a lot of days"... but that may not have been coincidence. That's truly what this song is about. To never give up, no matter how hard life gets.🙇♀️💝
Sweet the sin Bitter the taste in my mouth I see seven towers But I only see one way out You gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking Scream without raising your voice You know I took the poison from the poison stream Then I floated out of here, singing
Hello from confined france... this live performance of this song is the best ever and I noticed you cant find it on spotify. The power of Bono’s voice is at it’s top. Frissons...
Whenever I'm having a few beers by myself and watching a sunset I start Joshua Tree on this song and go through to Mothers of the Disappeared. Bloody good experience
I just lost a beautiful soul of a 24 yr Women who I was good friends with to the horror of drug addiction... Her name was Jessy . young talented filled with life. I'm a recovering addict myself. A day at a time I stay clean..The devil of addiction caused this woman to use one last time . I seen her wensday nite we were laughing and talking ..I last spoke to her Thursday nite.. This comes as a shock to me all her friends. Death from drugs comes so fast. I'll miss this beautiful soul of a woman. I love you Jessy Girl . R.I.P.. MY DEAR SWEET FRIEND ...
Im an ex heroin addict this song showed me a way out of addiction. I've been clean 15 years.

The greatest album ever recorded by any band or artist
I’m a ex alcoholic today I hit 4 months of sober I’m grateful to not drink myself to death this song would always help me out a lot in rehab.
Keep fighting, my friend, and never give up on yourself. Been fighting the demon for 12 years. Relapsed a year ago. "Fall down seven times, stand up eight."

The Edge is not only the best guitar player in the world, but a great piano player and singer. Long live to The Edge!
I can listen to this song over and over again... This does help me with my addiction and demons in my life...
a catholic Dubliner, a protestant Dubliner, an Englishman and a Welshman what was the percentage rate of them finding each other let alone being as unbelievably thought provoking as these four men have been..............destiny is amazing isn't it
Jennifer Clayton great point ! my favorite band of all time
100%, as they were all in the same class in school
J A Afaik, they happened to see a sign Larry posted looking for people to jam with. It was, in fact, nothing short of extraordinary that these 3 guys (plus Edge's brother) just happened to spot and choose to respond to that random ad Larry decided to post.

One of the most powerful songs of all tome, especially for us who have a link to addiction
He didn't dedicate it to the army, he dedicated it to the people of the army. And think what the song's about. Think about the title. this is about adam clayton's drug abuse.
Beautiful sentiment. Being a soldier and being a veteran is tough.
The song is about a heroin junkie friend (a woman) of theirs and addiction.
Some ones got to go but no longer...obviously evil has taken the driving side
Bono and the Edge sound like magic when they sing together
this is why millions of people love U2 !!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!

If I'n not mistaken, hasn't one member of ZZ Top passed?
I get very emotional when I hear this song..
You are not the only one. It has melancholy and a certain ache; another very memorable song from a band that in my opinion has left a big mark in the footprint of music.

Sweet the sin
Bitter the taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out
You gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice
You know I took the poison from the poison stream
Then I floated out of here, singing
SING IT HANZ
So much time has gone by.. Even from this time. Still hit's where it should.

Really like this version. Slavery is a tool of the elite and powerful. It's why all people need to be able to defend themselves and their freedom.
TOP 1000
Happy 30th Joshua Tree!
