Philadelphia's mural arts program started in the 1980s as an anti-graffiti initiative under Mayor Wilson Goode. But founder Jane Golden took the idea far from its anti-graffiti roots.
Today, Mural Arts Philadelphia is a large public art organization that innovates through public and private funds. These murals increase property values, draw in tourists, and help employ the artists creating them. In addition to that, the public art can be a tool for communities to express themselves.
Famous Philadelphia murals have included works by Shepard Fairey, Keith Haring, Meg Saligman, and many others. That makes it a unique model of public art for cities around the world.

I've been saying this for years. It's the best way to cut crime and vandalism. If you give artists something positive to do, they'll often jump at the chance to make art in a productive way!
yeah but art isn't always profitable. Glad it has worked out for these folks though!
Public art is like public education. Free art means our community is beautiful instead of ugly; free education means our community is smart(er) instead of ignorant. There's a rational self-interest in husbandry of your community.

There are murals in every city to some extent, but philly has the largest collection of them in the world--and by a fair margin, i think. So i guess the city of brotherly love is really the city of colorful walls.
This is the equivalent of instead of telling a kid to stop fighting, you tell them to be a boxer or do wrestling.

Philly is so beautiful man. I drove around it at midnight when the city was sleepy, so beautiful... The cobblestone streets. The charmy narrow streets. The beauriful townhouses and the skyscrapers in the background over the townhouses... so beautiful and historic.

Exactly. When people hear graffiti, they immediately think of NYC and not Philly. Time magazine in 1970 on its cover named Philly the graffiti capital of THE WORLD!
It was everywhere in the city in the 70s and 80s. Subways, and anything else that literally had a surface. I remember thinking that was normal until I moved to Baltimore back in the day! And was like they barely have any!

Philly is rough but great city in general. The murals are what tie us together and connects us to establish our identity. I remember walking down the street and striking up a conversation with a man covered head to toe in paint with a big grin on his face. Mural arts employed him after he got out of prison and was happy to be given a second chance

I think people often underestimate artist's respect for others' art. Most graffiti artists are still artists who at the end of the day recognize and appreciate the skillful execution of their craft (in this case painting). Of course there's always gonna be 'THAT guy' who just wants to screw with everyone, but the murals' effectiveness at deterring graffiti really doesn't surprise me one bit.
They gotta respect the amount of work that goes into getting just one of these completed.

Love this! I wish more cities would consider creative solutions like this, to make their cities more beautiful.
It's awesome, cost effective and unique.
Anyone else thinks it's adorable that no one graffitied the beautiful morals. It just proves that not every person who does graffiti is just a "thug" like people have been believed to think through movies and etc.. it proves that the people doing the graffiti appreciate art and see what their doing as art and do not want to cover up art.

I live in Chicago now, but I grew up in Philly and I recognize a LOT of them.
The woman speaking at the end is a hero, and what she said in the end is so inspirational.
This is why I'm happy that I'm from Philly. There's nothing plain/dull about Philadelphia.
From what I understand the reason graffiti writers don't defame murals is the graffiti artist in Philly see it as an unspoken rules ie. never write on murals I mean that's what my graffiti teacher taught me lol.
And also it just looks dope why defame it.
Semoske Games some people who live in those areas are afraid of gentrification, in which higher markets would force them to move out since they couldn't afford to live there anymore.

Also, I'm concerned about spinning the marketing of "The Mural Lofts" as community development rather than plain old gentrification. What is the point of raising property values if it pushes out the people who already live in the area? :/

This video is cool, but it makes it seem like the Mural Arts program is responsible for all of the art in Philadelphia, when in reality, Philadelphia has always been an art-centric city.
But they are the reason why there are murals in the neighborhoods that most are afraid to go to.

I loved growing up in philadelphia. The mural arts program came to our school and allowed us to participate in making their beautiful mural on the side of our school. It was a great experience.
I grew up outside of Philly, it's a crazy city.

I live in Philadelphia and I always see them all the time, but I never really thought about it. It is interesting to see the reason behind why they have so many of them in the city.

It's crazy how much I took murals for granted growing up in Philly. Like seeing the Common Threads mural in the first frame of the video filled me with nostalgia as I remembered seeing it every single day as I walked down Spring Garden to the BSL after school. I go to school in DC now, and sure it's a beautiful and fairly artsy city, but it just can't touch the vibrancy of MY CITY ❤️
This is absolutely amazing. Applause for Vox for also not bringing politics into it. They walked a fine line between the public and private sector funding, but ultimately, they made someone as fiscally libertarian like me convinced that we need publicly funding murals in my city.
Art is very political though.

NYC is trash
ARVIN, NYC is the city of art for the bourgeoisie; where art is good because it is popular. The art scene there is a gilded, simulated romp for the upperclass. To be sure, there are artists in NYC with authenticity- who struggle against the current. Philly on the other hand is accessible, inclusive, and vibrant. Take the murals for example- we have murals in Rittenhouse and Manayunk as well as South Philly and Kensington. If you can't pay for a guided tour we have interactive maps and signs with relevant information scattered throughout the city. When these murals are being planned the community they will be painted in are given a space to speak about what is relevant/provoking to them. And the Mural Arts program is one of MANY art programs this city helps in part to run. So excuse me when I roll my eyes at the notion that NYC is the city of art for the entire East Coast.

This program is *excellent*!! Some of the neighborhood murals were painted by the residents in the community. The one I know of is a mural of the residents on the block. Sends a strong message when a child comes out to play and can see a beautiful mural of themselves that they actually painted. Jane Golden is the best!!!

Murals are some of my favorite pieces of art. You find some of the best murals in the 'roughest' neighborhoods. It brings beauty to them. Having people from those places express themselves through art is truly beautiful.

I know the one artist Meg Saligman . She and her husband had a boat right next to ours quite a few years ago. They are both extremely Pleasant and also very intelligent people. They were a pleasure to have as Neighbors on the dock. I even had the pleasure to go up on the scaffold as Meg was painting one of her murals. She was very surprised to see me climb up on the scaffold unannounced. LOL . She went on to explain to me how the layout was done. I was very impressed. Nice people

Being in the Mural Arts program in Middle School was the best. I remember we painted a Mural on the wall near the office of the school.
When I went to philly I walked everywhere and when I walked back to my hotel I looked at the murals to know if I was going the right way.
I wonder if this same concept would work in Detroit.
The featured mural in this piece is down the block from where I used to live. I still pass it all the time and think it is beautiful. Philly is an amazing city it has more and better art and history than most US cities. What also makes it is that it filled with down to earth , good people.If you come take the mural tour.

I went to Philly this weekend, it's such a lovely city!!!
This video is the truth. I was talking to one of the artists that was working on the Richard Allen mural at 3801 Market st., which has a deep historic and cultural connection to the AME church, he was telling me how he didn't know the direction his life was going in until he applied to the mural arts program. He didn't even finish high school but his art changed his life. You have to be very talented to even be considered for the program. Respect.
I used to live in Williamsport, a few hours away from Philly. I saw pictures of it and always wanted to go, but we moved to Massachusetts. One of the things I remember of Williamsport is a mural on the opposite side of this.. theater, for live events like a magic show or some stuff.

Brick Lane in London also had great murals. I took a free walking tour of Brick Lane and it was one of the best walking tour I've done throughout Europe.
