I would love to see what percentage of footage they actually use after a week long shoot.
Nearly every shot we see in the final version is simply breathtaking.
One of their producers, Chadden Hunter, told me that they shoot 6-8 terrabytes of footage for what ends up being a 3-4 minute sequence. High resolution and high frame rate are part of that but also, keeping the shot in focus has become much harder with these big camera sensors (shallower depth of field) and all the moving handheld shots. The camera operators for these shows are absolute beasts -joss
Documentaries are typically shoot everything and let the editor sort it out. Of course there is a general outline for what to get but most of the magic footage comes from the unplanned shots that are shot on reflex/instinct/whim.
Source: I've edited a few doco's.
Frame by Frame I wonder how much footage there is to edit? I imagine that there must be hours and hours of material.
Gleanix where can I see planet earth II?
Vox the quality off bbc video is incredible. i can't think of many of documentaries which weren't good and top gear video is incredible.
A fantastically insightful video Joss! We cannot wait for the next chapter.
BBC Earth Hey BBC!
BBC Earth Hey,u guys should film in countries like Nepal too and use 8k 60p cameras in your next BBC earth 3 documentary, that would be so awesome.

David Attenborough's death will be the loss of a national treasure
E mily oh yes but let's enjoy him
E mily oh yes. Let's JOIN him.

They'll make sure to get it on film.

Sometimes I hear Attenborough’s voice in my head as I go about my day
“The young adult male, hungry yet again, forages the pantry for more signs of potato crisps or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. While he should be out foraging for greener pastures or preparing a fresher meal, he seems to have decided to gain body weight & mass as a means of attracting a mate to better keep warm for cuffing season. What an interesting display of behavior. We’ll check back in with him later”

Fantastic. You sir, Just made my day
There's so much improvement between planet Earth and planet Earth II, wow
We all keep making the mistake of thinking that technology isn't crazy. But it is. And if you look at anything from 10 years ago today, no matter how modern you might remember it, it will probably look old and primitive.
LOTR begs to differ... but yes, the difference between most films over a decade is pretty huge.
Legolas on those elephants have aged very poorly, but luckily that's the only thing in lotr that did.
DAVIDEOS not really awesome vs awesome isn't a huge change
+GrijzePilion 1080p is starting to look primitive to me.
As an American, we really owe a lot to the UK public for being willing to fund the BBC and it's incredible nature documentaries. They are a gift to the world.
Naw Dawg we aren’t willing. We are forced😂
@@aniboo3916 Fair. Was the BBC set up before you guys got rid of the monarchy? Cuz if it was after, isn't that technically democracy aka you're willing?
So true!! We owe UK
Naw Dawg Bro we have not gotten rid of the monarchy also we are forced periodt.
@@nawdawg4300 it's a tax, no tax is willingly put on people
I think we all were heavily invested in the survival of those baby iguanas running from snakes.
They make it. I promise they do.
@Ryan Plethra do you mean Saint Martin?
Yeah, that was beautiful
I had never been so stressed
It was so dramatic I’ve loved it and cheered for the iguana
when David Attenborough passes on there will be a day of national mourning in the UK.
generations have grown up with his programmes.
we love him like a grandad! 🌍🌿🐅
Same here in Canada he's been with me since childhood, back when we had projectors to watch films!
I grew up in Belgium and I think 80% of the nature documentaries I saw on tv as a kid were voiced by him.
he won't die
Sit Stand Walk real talk
An Audi RS6 to pass on means to die...
And here we see a common Human in his natural environment. He's now reading through comments, totally unaware of his surroundings. He's desperately searching for love, but what he doesn't know, is that he won't find it here. In the comments of a youtube video.
You Don't Know That! I could still find that special someone. I just need to keep broadcasting my virtue till they notice!
Tensions grow high when they can't find what they want. There are even some rare cases known, were they go as far as to release their aggression on their computer, instead of other commenters, like they would normally do.
did you just assume my gender?????
i love this XD
Aldo lmao I'm high thinking the same damn thing and then I scroll down to do as your comment says and it's about the same as I thought, crazy
Sir. David Attenborough is their real weapon.I would watch a video recorded in a potato as long as he narrated.
To be honest, I could watch a video _of_ a potato as long as he narrated
you so wrong ... they have many weapons beside Sir.david .a ...they have talent and good filming and cinematic style for thier documentaries
@ oh the crew is simply amazing. I can't even imagine not having planet earth in our world today and other stuff they've done. David Attenborough, I will shed full on tears when he dies. I will miss him more than some of my dead relatives - Mulaney.
You should watch his movie "A Life on Our Planet".
being another potato the protagonist
The soundtrack in the middle of the video is so smooooth!
6:00 - anyone!?!?
Which one is it! where can I find it!!
UGH! I can never find these tracks they use!!
VOX needs to do a better job of naming the songs they use!
Check in the description
Just imagine how will Planet Earth 3 would look like
Rogelio Bustos It depends if david is still alive. I think it took them 6 years for part 2 now imagine part 3.
if there's even enough nature left to film by that time :')
Rogelio Bustos NOW IN X-RAY
IMAGINE!! I mean back in 90's we thought that WOW cinema cant get any better and we thought it was incredible, then when you rewatch 90's movies, omg cringe. It looks like a child made those movies. But just imagine, RIGHT NOW we look at Planet Earth II and think DAMN this is the most incredible cinematic thing Ive seen........and we know 100% it will get better, but our mind cant grib as to how something so perfect and top notch can get any better.....Man I am looking forward to 2030, 2050, and man imagine the technology we will have around 2100????? The lucky children who will live then!
Rogelio Bustos filmed with 3d 360 cameras for viewing with a vr headset! that kind of technology is perfect for nature docs
Somewhere up there, aliens film us much the same way we do these animals; from afar without us noticing their presence. They call the documentary Planet Earth also.
David Attenborough is still the narrator.
Brian L oh my god I just snorted so hard 😂
they are indeed recording us and the galactic sir attenborough is articulating the blond American who appears to be the alpha male
Not to brag or anything... but I'm probably a fan favorite.

3:30 That shot always leaves me gasping
Haha what a coincidence I actually made a video a couple weeks ago about the editing in Planet Earth II. The show is so freaking good, and much like all of your other content, this video manages to pull back the veil show the beauty and technical mastery of the BBC team.
I agree
The camerawork gave me eyegasms, Hans Zimmers music gave me eargasms, David Attenborough's intellectual narration gave me a braingasm.
Planet Earth 2 was an incredible work of art that brought me back to when I was a kid and how much a loved watching and learning about wildlife (still do)
Rarely every buy BluRay movies but I have started my collection of animal documentaries narrated by the great Sir David Attenborough.
Things like these must be watched in the highest quality to fully appreciate it.
And Joss gave me penisgasms.
That's a great idea for a collection!

I'm still mystified by how they can get those cinematics shots, especially of small and tiny animals, without disturbing them, letting them to do things completely naturally. Those close shots seem impossible.
VOX should stick to these kinds of vidiyas
master asdf yeah they should do stuff like this instead of the stupid political videos
Especially muslim apologist videos not.
The thing is though that you can't simply ignore a problem and expect it to disappear.
why? is hearing something you might not agree with that painful?
@The Establishment master asdf needs a safe space

Planet earth series is probably the best cinematic experience I have ever had... Thank you so much for making this video
funny how everyone in the comments is saying they don't like politics... while bringing up politics in an unrelated non political video

Yoshikage Kira "Most", not all, are OUTWARDLY peaceful. The ideology is extremely dangerous. About half of them, globally, are fundamentalist who make southern evangelicals look secular. A very large percentage fully endorse theocracy and terrorist actions. This needs to be acknowledged. Like the previous commenter stated, Vox pretends that they are treated like animals. They aren't. They are given extraordinary tolerance in the west. More than they receive from the gulf states.

The ending note was so apt...no technology can replace masterful storytelling.
Having recently used a Glidecam (Stedicam alternative) for the first time and being excited about the potential for "epic" shots, I realized soon enough that just a steady shot doth not a compelling watch make :P
The composition, the lights, the motif...and with non-actors just as with animals, capturing them without spooking them...all so crucial.
The challenges, the disappointments, the joys of filmmaking is like nothing else for me :)
Looking forward to more such videos (a welcome break from politics).
I'm not okay with how David Attenborough's name was pronounced, I forgot American's say those sort of names funny. Att-en-bruh not Att-en-boh-row. Att-en-burr-uh also works.
Curly j20 it's because we see borough and assume it's pronounced the same way that you would if we're talking about the things that dug the Chunnel do.
At-ten-bur-ruh is the correct pronunciation if I'm not wrong, from what I've watched of British television. 'Edinburgh' is pronounced similarly.
I'm not okay with how British people say, "Carpark, bonnet, arches, boot, mate, and other stupid ass sounding words..

8:14 This whole chase scene was very impressive to watch.
Nothing has made me care more about the global natural environment since seeing the first Planet Earth series. The second was equally magnificent. Attenborough's narration of both is a masterpiece and his love for what he does is simply infectious
It's pronounced Attenborough not Attenborough.

1:14 Sir David Attenborough is not the most recognizable voice of the "genre". Sir David Attenborough IS the genre. He is the embodiment of all natural history documentaries. This has aired in the UK already. They told us how they achieved the shots at the end of each episode. Just like in the first series. Can't remember if this was touched upon in the series. This video feels a lot like the end of a Planet Earth episode. It's great to watch though.
Working with a team to shoot content like Planet Earth seems like a very rewarding thing
Not even gonna lie some of the scenes in the Planet Earth Series left me teary eyed.
Also the fox that hunted by diving into the snow 😂😂 my heart couldn't take it.

Paid for by me, my friend, my whole family and everyone else I see on the street and with no adverts whatsoever. Why can't it be like this with trains in the UK?
Because people don't realize taxes literally buy society.
To be fair, the big problem with trains is not the franchising system, it's aging infrastructure.
