    Hi Mark
    love how you come up with simple but effective ways of tank stuff, mark can I ask I'm picking up red sea max 130d that's 130litre 34 gallon will this size be ok, what do you think will this thank work ok for a planted shrimp tank, I'm going to keep red tia, ruby's, super crs , maybe 5 spotted pinto, that's my plan
    size and the flow ?? the flow will be more than air sponge filter,
    but you can angle the flow in the tank, what do you think on this tank
    Thanks Rich

      That type of tank the inlet for the filter isnt Shrimp safe ,yo will need to get some stainless steel mesh and cover the intake then it will be fine . That tank is a good size for Shrimp :)

PS i olso have 60 fish in a 180 liter tank and never checked a thing either and no problems to so I wonder if its realy needed for the basic shrimp and most fish

      You have good practices no doubt my friend and you probably have great water that works for you ...that is where we are all different because we all have different water conditions so what works for you might not work for the next guy if you know what I mean.
      And yes if you use tap water it can change out of the blue ..this is why you must use a dechlorinater like Prime everytime you make water .

    what is the mineral balls for? plants or shrimps?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 лет назад

      Hello Joshua ,The mineral balls/stones are for everything in the tank e.g shrimp ,plants and most importantly the bacteria and micro organisms.

    • @meadowfrance

      He said in the video he has soft water and the shrimp need the minerals to grow/molt.

    Do the plants need to be fed?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 лет назад +1

      No ,I deliberate choose all low light plants for my setups because of this they dont need much food :)

  • @ineerajbatra
    @ineerajbatra 6 лет назад

    This shrimp tank is setup without 3-4 weeks of cycling, unlike in the other video for CRS tank setup for breeding(45 mins long video). Why is it so? Also since you have not used Amazonia sand, will you be adding external ferts in this tank for plant growth? Thanks

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 лет назад +1

      The active soil had ammonia and ferts in it but the sand is inert thats the difference ..most active substrates now dont have any ammonia in them so the cycle time is shorter :)

    • @ineerajbatra
      @ineerajbatra 6 лет назад

      Thanks. Are there any difference in tanks setup for different types of shrimps? Is there any instructional video or text you can point me to covering this aspect? Thanks. PS - I have successfully done hi-tech and low-tech planted tanks for 3 years, but shrimp tank will be the first in next few days.

      Yes in general Neocaradina like hard water +7ph and bee shrimp like soft water under 7ph ,tiger shrimp can go in both hard and soft and I have breed them in both conditions :) I don have a link for you but if you need any help just ask me :)

      Tap water in our area has pH 8. Is there a good shrimp variety I can breed at this pH or whats the best way to reduce pH. If I have to reduce the pH than I think the best way is to use a DIY RO unit. Agree?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 лет назад

      Ro or distiled water but with both you have to add minerals back to it because they are to pure :)

      I go by ph, soft water has a low ph and hard water has a higher ph ... I also use a tds pen but I am not sure how a curate that way is.

    Mark, I was wondering, could I keep cherry shrimp in a tank without a filter if I do daily 20% water changes using water from an established shrimp tank? Also they'd be fed in a glass tray so the food they don't eat can easily be removed so decomposing food won't deteriorate water quality.

      Marks Shrimp Tanks I thought they were a bit pretty for eating but is it possible to get hold of edible shrimp for the purpose of eating. I'm trying to set up a self sustaining aquaponics system to grow edible fish and plants and would like to throw some shrimp in the mix. Or would they eat the nutrients meant for the plants? Thanks for replying man 😀

    1) is 2.7 gallons. a good size? and how many shrimps per gallon?
    2) does the filter have to be under the gravel?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 лет назад

      I used to have a small 2 gallon tank and it was ok for up to 20/30 cherry shrimp, more than this I the shrimp stopped growing and no it doesnt have to be an undergravel filter a sponge filter works as do small powerhead filters and hang on back filters.

    • @Andrew-mm5qn
      @Andrew-mm5qn 6 лет назад

      I find small tanks like 2 gals really hard to maintain. If you arent precise on feeding, you may have an ammonia spike. 5 gallons are perfect.

      +ely dwayne salazar ... if you understand the principle to undergravel filtration systems, you should be able to figure it out simply looking at the 2:50 - 3:20 mark. Raised plastic saucer with drilled holes, an airlift tube with airline tubing including an external air pump.

    I see no end of commercial aquarists promoting the use of air powered filters in various forms in their noisy fish rooms without ANY consideration that most of us have our 1 or 2 aquariums in our living spaces. I would NEVER recommend the use of air pumps for the average person unless noise is not an issue. ALL air pumps due to their use of diaphragms give horrible residual vibration noise. This is never noted by RUclipsrs.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 лет назад

      Yeah for sure, I switched over to all powerheads a long time ago because my big airpump failed twice and it was hell of a noisey.

    • @zaink7037
      @zaink7037 5 лет назад

      Agree there. I have a tetra airpump which has been running for about 8 years and about 2 years ago the top and bottom cover detached over the years of vibration. To be honest I could do without it as there are times where it just makes loud noises from the vibration.

    • @AquaPeet
      @AquaPeet 5 лет назад +1

      @MissKitty Eheim makes pretty noiseless airpumps! They even have a rubber moulding and you cannot hear them once inside a cabinet.
      I even hung up mine on the rubber eye so I can leave open my cabinet to see my temp controller.
      All I hear is the airstone bubbling inside the aquarium! :)

    • @NATxbear23
      @NATxbear23 5 лет назад

      I put my pump on a hand towel and use a control valve to limit the airflow so the bubbles aren’t too loud.
