Bonnie isn't just a fantastic singer--she's also a phenomenal blues guitarist. She's jammed with all the greats & her slide guitar work is something to behold. She's like really good.
Yes, Maddy, this is a very sad song, and your held back emotions showed it. Most of us have been in a situation of unrequited love at one point in our life. I remember when I heard it for the first time it brought me to tears at that time in my life. I checked online and "I Can't Make You Love Me" is a song written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin and recorded by American singer Bonnie Raitt for her eleventh studio album, Luck of the Draw. Released as the album's second single in 1991, "I Can't Make You Love Me" became one of Raitt's most successful singles, reaching the top-20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the top-10 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
The original and best version by far. The incredible keyboard work is done by a local guy, Bruce Hornsby. There's even a Hornsbyville Road named for the family. Definitely a sad and beautiful song.
I was lucky enough to see Bonnie perform live just one week ago, and she did not disappoint. So talented, and a delightful person besides. This video version is a shortened radio edit; I recommend you listen to the full-length version too. The song was written by Nashville writers Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin, who were well-noted for their successes in the country music arena. Raitt recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio, later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen.'" For Raitt, the song was notoriously difficult to sing, due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and breathing, and the emotional content involved. At the televised Grammy Awards of 1992 Raitt performed it in an even more austere setting than on record, with just her and [pianist Bruce] Hornsby highlighted. As she negotiated the final vocal line, she let out a big audible and visible sigh of relief that she had successfully gotten through it. Her live performance of the song was released on the 1994 album Grammy's Greatest Moments Volume III. Raitt has continued to sing the song in all her concert tours. Raitt said this about performing the song: "I mean, 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is no picnic. I love that song, so does the audience. So it's almost a sacred moment when you share that, that depth of pain with your audience. Because they get really quiet, and I have to summon ... some other place in order to honor that space." - Raitt, 2002 NPR interview
I love your take on this. And you’re right. There was a local business that opened up for wedding parties and such. It was called Johnny and June”s. They got shut down.
Once you’ve lived life, this song cuts to the bone. Bonnie Raitt delivers such a hauntingly beautiful rendition of this amazing song. If you don’t feel her pain in this song, you haven’t lived.
Bonnie delivered! Bonnie I would Love you as much as you can. A very sad song we all may have been through, but Souls meet their intended match. Love your videos and attention. Stay Safe. 🤘🤙
Bonnie Raitt is an amazing guitarist, too. Truly one of the best slide players, and just such a part of that New Orleans sound. She’s one of the best. Thank you!
She is very versatile as far as her singing is concerned. Check out her song "Let's Give 'Em Something To Talk About" and you won't believe it's the same woman singing, AND playing a mean slide guitar!
I love Bonnie. One of the most myopic awards ever given at the Grammy's was her "Best New Artist" in 1992...after 21 years on the road opening for and playing with some of the most iconic bands in history. Only stupider Grammy was the first "Best Heavy Metal" award going to Jethro Tull. She won Song of the Year for Just Like that in 2023. Well deserved.
Her live version released on her 1995 ‘Road Tested’ CD and DVD is even more more moving and beautiful. Among the many other recordings of this song, Adele released a reasonable version which Bonnie has graciously acknowledged sent her a new legion of fans.
This has been one of my favorite songs for many many years. I sctually heard it the first time on a movie in which there was a karaoke contest and it had been sung. That was enough to make me research the song and discover Bonnie Raitt. I keep her version on a playlist
We just all want to be loved and I have been blessed for 41 years. You should check out Teddy Swims cover of this song. Thanks for the reaction Maddy!!!
If you want to listen to some early Bonnie, check out Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George (Little Feat), John Hammond, and Freebo from Ultrasonic Studios 1972. It was a live radio broadcast. Amazing moment in time. ❤
Maddy, I've said it before and I will always say it. You are a beautiful lady inside and out and you don't candy coat reactions for views. Thank you for being one of the few...very few, genuine reactors.
If you want to hear another sad one by Bonnie, try "Going Wild For You , Bsby" . It's a heart breaker. Love Bonnie, she not only has a great voice for blues and rock, but she can play that guitar!
Saw her in concert, this song, asked her buddy to come in, Bruce Hornsby. Billy Joel called Piano Man but I'll take Bruce anytime, makes legend song even better! Check out his song The Road Not Taken, some words, then him and band go off playing minutes, any playlist better with song.
No Maddy, don’t cry! 😊 Actually this was written by a two guys but originally sung by Bonnie. IMO believe it or not Teddy Swims does a better version. PLEASE give it a listen. He has so much soul. You will not be disappointed. Yay! 🏄🏽♂️✨👋🏽
Reading some of the other comments, my opinion may not be popular. I absolutely love this song but somehow Bonnie's version does not connect with me as much I want it to. Probably the best version I heard of it was by George Michael
"I can't make you love me if you don't." No truer words than those. Bonnie's rendition is my favorite. She is amazing. Here is the guy that wrote the song: ruclips.net/video/6wkQ1pm9ktU/видео.html
As others pointed out, Yes it seems like she HAD to write this, but nope. Co-Written by former NFL football player/Country Music writer Mike Reid. Also, not to be snarky - I'm at "a certain age". Two things I can USUALLY recognize Django Reinhardt on guitar and Bruce Hornsby on piano. and if you think THAT was said My Dear: ruclips.net/video/ng-NWWxplLY/видео.htmlsi=ez_tH2S6trOOEajI
Written by a couple of guys - who said they wrote it from the male perspective - I think Bonnie's version is absolutely correct. What emotional baggage does a guy for bed-hopping? None, socially. "More" is completely acceptable in Western society. But for a woman to do that? She's a whore, a slut... we have all kinds of names to degrade her. The social and moral cost that a woman pays for this same behavior has ancient history piled high against her. So, here we have a woman completely willing to sacrifice everything for this one last chance - because she has love, and the guy does not.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. And no one sings it better than Bonnie Raitt.
Bonnie isn't just a fantastic singer--she's also a phenomenal blues guitarist. She's jammed with all the greats & her slide guitar work is something to behold. She's like really good.
"I'll close my eyes then I won't see the love you don't feel when you're holding me" is the saddest line ever

FYI, Mike Reid was a Pro Bowl defensive lineman for the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL in the early '70s before retiring to focus on music. .
The original and best version by far. The incredible keyboard work is done by a local guy, Bruce Hornsby. There's even a Hornsbyville Road named for the family.
Definitely a sad and beautiful song.
This is also a cover believe it or not! It was originally written Mike Reid, who played in the NFL before he became a songwriter.

Did not know this.
Thanks for the info.👍
@@SaverioP I just learned that this year. Her version is still the best and most iconic though!
Ms Raitt 's velvet voice 'keying off' Bruce Hornsby's keyboards/piano is simply 'magical'
This whole album is really great😊
One of my favorite Bonnie Raitt song ever! Good one Maddy!

Showing emotions, just says you're human and have a heart. You have a good heart Maddy. Great song.
I love your take on this. And you’re right. There was a local business that opened up for wedding parties and such. It was called Johnny and June”s. They got shut down.
This was written by country composers Mike Reid, a former Pro Football Lineman, and Allen Shamblin, who also wrote: "Don't Laugh At Me".
Once you’ve lived life, this song cuts to the bone. Bonnie Raitt delivers such a hauntingly beautiful rendition of this amazing song. If you don’t feel her pain in this song, you haven’t lived.
Maddy your reaction touched me and of course Bonnie too. 🥹😭♥️
It's Bruce Hornsby on piano
Looks like Bruce Hornsby playing the piano
She's so good. Plays a fairly tasty slide guitar, as well.
More please -
Bonnie delivered! Bonnie I would Love you as much as you can. A very sad song we all may have been through, but Souls meet their intended match. Love your videos and attention. Stay Safe. 🤘🤙

One of the most hauntingly, beautiful songs written. I’ve always absolutely loved this.
The depth of sadness, beautifully written, then sung by Ms Raitt.
No matter who you are or what gender this song hits home like very few others! Great review and fantastic show!
One of the saddest songs ever written. I mean, who has never experienced unrequited love?

Bonnie can make you feel everything every emotion
Yes!!!
One of the baddest female guitarists all time, her and Nancy Wilson, and still smokin in their later yrs
You should check out the version of this song by a guy called "Teddy swims" I believe. You won't believe the voice that belongs to that man. :-)
Brutal but brilliantly performed.
Live, love, laugh. Everything else is wasted energy
There is Bonnie Raitt's version of this song and every one else.

I know the artist, she’s good.
She reminds me in this song of another voice I love so much
Amy Grant.

Try LOVE HAS NO PRIDE. Bonnie is fantastic.
For comparison, Linda Ronstadt and Tracy Nelson also do exquisite versions.
Agree, do the live version with David Crosby and Graham Nash of "love has no pride"
