happened a lot to spitfire near my house during ww2 when they were coming to france in very low altitude to avoid dca and air patrol they often did it at night which made the rocks pretty much not visible

They saw the rock only 1 second before impact. The Average human reaction time is 250 miliseconds. Then would come the brain making a choice which would eat up even more time. So at maximum they have a split second to even input anything. At worst, they can’t even react. Even if they Vtol’ed and pulled up, Nothing could of stopped it.
