Better than a lot of 1up Arcade cabinets. Those things fall apart and have low quality written all over them. They're more decorative talking pieces than anything else, like playing on them.
Very cool watching you making the brace for the pedestal. I used to build my own arcade sticks way back and restored and converted a few arcades and tried all kinds of paints for projects like this. If you're willing to experiment for the next one, try flat paint, when doing basic painting like you did, it comes out way better, looks cleaner, paints easier, also use a foam roller as opposed to the fabric rollers. Foam rollers spread out super fine on all wood. Wood filler also works well and you don't have to chase it as fast like with bondo. Just an idea, not sure if viable, look into dox matrix signs, I think there are some nice ones that go well with the arcade and can mount to the top of the screen, or in marquee, there are ways to make them show the title of the game or custom graphics. I like the main design you follow, you keep it classic and straight. What I like the most is that the games get played, preserve the love for the games. If you have a router, look into doing some T-molding, it's easier than you think and it really dresses up the arcades, T-molding is fairly inexpensive and well varied. Also, smoked plexiglass is not much more expensive than regular plexi and makes the games look good, just up the contrast a tad if you have to, gives you a cleaner look. You could also spray paint the plexiglass for if you wanna make a bezel or have a second one and sandwich artwork to give it that arcade feel. Great video, thanks for sharing!
What an awesome comment! Thanks for the suggestions- I might try flat paint for a future build…. I just wanted a glossy finish on the machine but you might be right. I LOVE the idea of a dot matrix sign at the top. I’ll have to try that out… I’ve done T-molding on other machines… because this build used 1/2 inch plywood, I decided not to do it but I agree, it is a nice touch!

great idea! Maybe even make the cabinet curved to hold the plexi curved but the screen flat inside, that's gotta be a pretty cool effect, I'd use lexan or a dark plexi, It's probably tricky but the look would be amazing. For the gRills I'd use that perforated sheet, I think it's aluminum, looks really cool and it can be cut at any size.

You got any openings for an extra sibling? On a serious note I really want to get into woodwork but I have no tools and no experience. Any tips on a good starting point?
Thanks, Matthew!!! Just so you know, I just started doing woodworking myself. I am by NO MEANS an expert and I am learning as I go. The best starting point is just to do it. Here’s a couple of things that I wish I had known going into it: 1) Buy tools only when you need them. I’ve got tools sitting on my shelf that I’ve never opened thinking they’d be useful. You can get by pretty well with a circular saw, a ruler, a power drill and some glue. 2) Watch as many how to videos as you can. There are some really talented people on RUclips and you can learn how to pretty much make anything. 3) Home Depot and Lowes are convenient but you can find great tools for much less- Harbor Freight or Tractor Supply Co. have amazing deals on tools. Just know what you want before you go (see #1 above). 4) It seems so obvious to say this but it’s the most important thing I could share: ALWAYS THINK ABOUT SAFETY. I have bruises on my hand as I’m typing this because I wasn’t paying attention while hammering. Feel free to reach out anytime if you want to bounce some ideas off someone or if you have any questions at all!
So the system is run on a Raspberry Pi 4 and the Roms are played on RetroPie. It’s pretty easy to install on a Raspberry Pi (there are tons of tutorials on RUclips to show you how) and installing Roms is done wirelessly over the network. The joysticks and buttons are connected to a board that connects to the Pie via USB.
Hey, I'm interested in installing LED buttons. Just wondering how you power them? Do you need a separate power supply? I'm not using a PC and not using arcade1up. I do have a USB on my TV. Thanks for any info. Like your setup!👍
Thanks! The LED buttons are lit via USB power. So if you’re using a PC or a raspberry pi (or a smart TV in theory), it SHOULD light up the buttons. There are several videos out there on how to wire the buttons and as long as you have the controller board with a power port, you’ll be good to go.

I love it! But I've gotta ask: what are you going to do when that table saw kicks back on you? My personal opinion is that it's almost impossible to be careful enough with that tool. As your workshop grows, please prioritize table saw safety features, because losing fingers makes it really hard to play bar chords!
Thanks so much and glad to hear, Lewis! And your message can’t be said loudly or often enough- safety is NUMBER 1. I know I don’t talk about it often (and that’s my fault, will do better going forward) but before I cut anything I say to myself “where is the blade? Ok, now where are my hands? Am I wearing eye and ear protection?” That one time you forget to check is the one time you show up in the ER and are hoping the doctors can sew something back on!

Thanks for the kind words. I looked at the different finishes for the paint and thought gloss would work the best. But I’m about to do another build and I’ll take a look at the others. If I go another way, I will probably pick satin… not so sure about flat black but it’s good feedback!
@@theweekendsocialpodcast5577 . it your machine if you like that high gloss it all good . to me seem like if you see a black arcade or a black pinball machine most the time it flat or satin black that is all .
Just FYI, the screws for the joysticks should not be protruding through the top of the board. You should have only screwed the joysticks from the bottom of the board. The screws can get in the way of your hand and become uncomfortable. Otherwise great built.
Good to know! Having done some more research, they have bolt insets that would make that work really well. The screws on the control panel board have always bothered me aesthetically and functionally. Glad you liked the build and thanks for the feedback! 👍
Not a hater or anything, but the paint job looks a little suspect. Just out of curiosity did you prime and sand the plywood afterwards? Other than that, love the build.

First off, thanks for watching the video. Secondly, my son was actually more involved in the process than might have been shown on the video. That’s out of respect and caution for him. Are you talking about what I used to mount the TV? It was a harbor freight 40+ TV mount. I think it was $20. If you’re referring to something else, let me know!
one day you should build a virtual pinball machine it another level of building but it not cheap to do .
That’s a coincidence… I was talking to my buddy E-Money and we were saying the EXACT same thing. Stay tuned.
This is amazing. Have a material list? Where did you get the joysticks/buttons?
Thanks for the kind words! I’ll reply later this afternoon with a list of materials. The joysticks came from Amazon- I’ll post a link to that as well.
I just updated the description with the material list… Let me know if you have any questions or need any additional info!
Holy shit, you look like Hugh Jackman lol. Awesome build, wish I had the room to fit arcade cabinets in my house XD
I’ll take Hugh Jackman as a look alike- I’ve heard FAR FAR FAR worse! 🤣 thanks for the kind words!
You can build that but not finish a wall? Drywall is so cheap an self explanatory
I am planning on finishing the basement all at once but am still considering my options. Regardless, my basement serves its purpose as is for now… capability obviously isn’t an issue. But whatever. Thanks for watching the video I guess?
You got any openings for an extra sibling? On a serious note I really want to get into woodwork but I have no tools and no experience. Any tips on a good starting point?
Thanks, Matthew!!!
Just so you know, I just started doing woodworking myself. I am by NO MEANS an expert and I am learning as I go.
The best starting point is just to do it. Here’s a couple of things that I wish I had known going into it:
1) Buy tools only when you need them.
What did you use to play the game roms is it raspberries pue or something else
Pie sorry
There are several videos out there on how to wire the buttons and as long as you have the controller board with a power port, you’ll be good to go.
l've been asked to do a quad cabinet build for the local game store, (The pad, Bodmin). So l will use 4 old cabinets linked together in a square with an xbox 360 thats been soft modded. lt should turn out quite nice. Great vid by the way.
Do you sell these??
Not officially yet, but reach out to me! Shipping might be a pain but I’d be up for building more!
what retropie image did you use?
I used 4.7.1. I’m kind of a newb with Retropie, but definitely looking to learn more about all of the features. I love how easy it is just to get up and running, but when I get more time, I’m going to do a deep dive.
@@theweekendsocialpodcast5577 I'm keen on building a cabinet for the family. I'm confident with the cabinetry but dont know how to get all the old games we use to play at the parlour. Could you direct me to some videos to learn please ? 🙏
@@All_Dead_In_Shimoda there are lots of locations to find them… I would search RUclips for “downloading game Roms” or search google for Roms the system you’re looking for. I hope that helps!
@@theweekendsocialpodcast5577 cheers mate 👍 I'll follow that up
Where are the cabbinet?
It in the standz bros
Am I wearing eye and ear protection?” That one time you forget to check is the one time you show up in the ER and are hoping the doctors can sew something back on!
only thing i don't like about it is gloss black paint . it should be flat black or satin black paint i think it to glossy . other then that it a great build good job
🤨😄👍👍👍👍nice
Not a hater or anything, but the paint job looks a little suspect. Just out of curiosity did you prime and sand the plywood afterwards? Other than that, love the build.
Primed yes. Sanded so much I went through two dust masks. Sorry that the paint job didn’t live up to your expectations! I went over to my brothers house this past weekend and it still looks awesome in person.
I would have just used plexi instead of all that work in curing those curves
2:53 ayo?
Lol, I rushed filming that part and was worried that my dog was about to take a dump on the rug since I had not let him out when he sat by the door. Totally ayo
Only thing I would change on that 4 player build is, make the TV mount an adjustable one so you can rotate it for TATE mode.
Man, that’s an AWESOME idea… ughhhhh kind of kicking myself now. I will definitely keep that in mind for the next build, 100% for sure.
@@theweekendsocialpodcast5577 doing a similar build and bought a rotating tv mount on the zon
@@redherring5532 nice! I’d love to see it! Are you doing a build video for it?
I've always liked showcase cabinets, but they don't have many out there that are official units for stuff like modern fighting games.
This looks a lot closer to what I had in mind.
Awesome, Voltz! Thanks for the kind words-glad you liked it!
You can substitute the Raspberry Pi with a small PC build, you can run current MAME versions and a whole lot more ROMS will work for you
@@disturbedkillerify absolutely. You can even drop in other gaming systems and play using the same set up. There are lots of options- but to your point, when I’m ready to upgrade my home system I’ll be using a PC set up
That paint job is hard to look at. 😬
I like the glossy paint (but not everyone does)… I’m considering doing some vinyl overlays on the next version when I do them. 🤷
Sorry buy a arcade monitor needs to bee 4 by 3
Maybe you’re right- I was trying to build the machine with readily available parts. Didn’t see a 4:3 TV at target but it seems to work perfectly for the machine and my brother says he’s happy with it.
That's not an arcade cabinet.
Thanks for adding so much value to the conversation. Don’t forget- work the steps!
Not sure the point of having your kid in a mask and let alone putting him on camera..
First off, thanks for watching the video. Secondly, my son was actually more involved in the process than might have been shown on the video. That’s out of respect and caution for him. Third, my wife and I caught COVID (hence the mask, his choice being cautious). Fourth, I want all of my kids to take pride in not only the creative process but the ability to share it with the world. Safely.
I usually don’t reply to comments like this, but I’m proud of my 14 year old and I’ll defend his choices until I’m in the ground. And I’ll haunt the haters after I’m buried.
Why is he yelling?
Yeah, Bear Bryant coulda done it better.
Why not forget the paint and just use the custom wraps (prints/skins)?
I think it really comes down to expense. Finding someone to print custom graphics that look good is expensive from what I’ve found. But if you know of a good lead, let me know!!!
Those zero delay encoders and buttons are crap, I'm not a fan of the build either.
I’ve had no problems with the encoder or the buttons. And you’re not required to be a fan but plenty of other people, including my brother who was the recipient, are fans.
