Good review Shane! 45 megapixels in my opinion is extreme overkill for wedding photography. Our main camera bodies for years was the Nikon D700 and D3s, both 12 megapixels. We never had a client that wanted or requested a print that was too large for a 12mp file, including 30x40. The reason to upgrade to this camera is the 2 card slots or if you are someone who shoots video.
Thanks Jason! The two card slots will be amazing! Just in the last two weeks I had a client ask to do some extreme cropping. And on another occasion, I walked into a client's house a saw a giant print I had taken over their fire place and three more large prints on their adjacent wall, so I don't know that 45 megapixel will be overkill for me. And even it is, half the fun for me as a photographer is zooming in and looking at the files while I am editing them :) The D700 was a great camera!
This exact question has been bothering me so much. I’ve been debating the two bodies for the past few weeks. I feel like if you are really have to debate with your self as to why you don’t need the R5, you probably need the R5. The cropping aspect is what really has me coming back to the R5.
Right?! And even after you make the call the decision will still mess with you some. If you can rent/borrow both and compare images that might be helpful. If you have the money, the R5 will not disappoint. After a year, I still LOVE it. But the R6 is nearly as good and will give you more money for those incredible RF lenses. Decisions, decisions...
@@ShaneLongPhotography it’s funny that you bring up the money saving for some sweet RF glass. That’s one of the reasons why I consider the R6. In Canada the difference between the two camera bodies is $2000. Then you factor in the extra costs for a couple CFExpress cards and our insane sales tax, you are looking at just under a $3000 dollar difference between the two cameras. I’m likely just going to go for the R6. I’ve been doing family, maternity and couples shoots for the past year(The pandemic has made this interesting with all our lockdowns...). The R6 should be fine for this. I also will be shooting a few Micro weddings this summer, and once again the R6 should be more than enough. My thought is that if I run into an issue where I’m needing more, it will likely mean I am getting more/bigger clients. At that point, an upgrade to the R5 or something else might be worth it, and using the R6 as a backup instead of the RP will be even better.
HI Shane, Thanks for theses videos! Wanted to ask your opinion- I am a relatively new business owner shooting weddings, proposals and families with a 5D Mark IV- Ive invested in the 24-70 & the 70-200 2.8 and planning to get a lense for macro work ( love a suggestion on that one!) I need a backup camera and I original had planned to go with a 2nd 5D Mark Iv but that seems impractical now based on what I have seen. I frequently crop the way you do in your video above and I will continue to be offering prints to my clients (many of whom want o print large format). In my perfect scenario, I will be creating work that is similar in color & tone, and sharpness to the work that you do (LOVE YOUR WORK!!!!) I am not in the luxury market, but I am older and our family has an established income that would allow for a higher priced camera set up (as long as it made sense in the long run). I have recently invested in flash equipment and plan to incorporate that into my sessions on a regular basis. Can you advise on the best set up based on what I have outlined?
Hello Stacy! Sorry for the slow time to respond. I had to take a break from RUclips as I was super busy with photoshoots and family life. You probably have already made your decision, but I think you are wise to move to the newer generation of cameras. If you crop a lot, I would get the R5. It is amazing for that! If you crop some and want to save some money, the R is great too. Also look at some great prime lenses like the RF 50mm 1.2. That is my favorite lens of all. All the best!
@@ShaneLongPhotography hi Shane, no problem & thanks for getting back with me! I did go ahead and purchase the R6 with the lens converter and have been using it w/my Canon 24-70 and 70 to 200. I have been hesitant to use the eye tracking nature in my situations as I am afraid of it tracking on the wrong thing- any advice for that? Also curious if I were to purchase any R lense is the 50 the one you recommend first? I have rented the R 28-70 & it is Beautiful but really heavy (almost distractingly so… ) since I have the 5D IV and the two nice Canon lenses I’m just not sure where to go next
One of the biggest selling points for me was that I believe the R5 is more future proof than the R6. It already has more megapixels than I need so when the R5mk2 comes out it's going to have to have something amazing to get me to upgrade whereas just a jump in megapixels would be enough to have me wanting the R6mk2.
Hey Chris! Low light is super important! The R5 has been better in low light than my 5D4 which was more than good enough for me. So that wasn't a priority for me. But to some I am sure it is. All the best!
In my opinion Canon R5 has better sensor than R6. You can compare side by side editing in Lr or C1 both cameras. Personally - shadows recovering better in R5 without colors destruction.
R5 with 35mm 1.8 (with potential to get better RF glass later) or R6 with 24-70 L 2.8? About the same price all together. Potentially want to do professional portrait work in the future but initially will use for hobby/family things. Hard decision. I like the idea of more effective cropping but if my glass isn’t as good, maybe it would’ve been better to just go with r6 and the L glass. Coming from 6D Mark II.
Hey Grant! Great question! Based on what you said, if it were me, I would maybe start with the R6 and the RF 35 1.8 and RF 50 1.8. The primes would be great for family photos! You can always sell gear and upgrade later if you are having fun with it!
What should a photographer do? Look for light composition and the crop in camera, its called framing. People want to crop in oost should buy zoom lenses in the first place
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 95% of the time that works for me. But sometimes I have to crop in post due to the situation. Especially at weddings when things happen so fast.
Hi Sorry, I don't know English, I'm going to use a translator to communicate with you. I would like to know with which camera the photos of minutes 4:04 - 4:07 and 4:10 were taken. Did you use the R5 or R6? Thanks a lot..!!!!
Hello Edgardo! I made this video before the R5 and R6 had released. So those photos were taken with the 5D Mark IV! It too is a great camera! Hope that helps! I ended up buying the R5 and LOVE it!!! I have a review of it on my channel with photos taken with the R5 if that is helpful.
Hello! If it were me, I would for sure go with the R6. The AF is on a whole other level, it comes with IBIS, and two card slots. And 20 megapixels is more than enough 99.9 percent of the time. Hope that helps!
It looks like your final preference is for horizontal composition. Perhaps over a period of time, you may initially compose horizontally. You will than have the dual advantage with R5. I purchased R6 after hearing your views for my needs are very much more modest. Thanks.
You are going to love it! It is an amazing camera! I probably actually do more vertical compositions as I do a lot of portraits, but for the sake of RUclips, I chose mostly horizontal photos so that it would fill the screen better :) Very observant of you! Thanks so much for watching!
Both! Haha! You are going to notice a huge upgrade with either of them. Honestly the R6 might be a good place to start. You won't need any new memory cards and having looked at the R6 files, they are great. Then you can get two and having two of the same model which is soooo nice.
just curious if anyone can tell me if the r6 is much better at high iso for stills? Was reading r5 is the same when downsampled but is this true in real life for images above 6400?
I haven't used them side by side in that case but the R5 is fantastic and I know the R6 is amazing as well. After using the R5 for over a year, I have never been disappointed when I have had to crank the ISO and I think the R6 is really similar. But maybe someone who has used both can chime in!
Thanks for the video Shane! Any concerns regarding switching to the CFexpress cards? I'm still shooting a 5D mkIII and have a ton of CF cards. I'm going to have to get a few more SD cards with the R6 or SEVERAL CFexpress cards. That's a ton of money on a format I'm not familiar with... Any concerns that it'll be around in 5 years?
Good question! So far I really like the CFexpress. It is about the same size as an SD card and crazy fast! Though for me, just two SD cards would be preferred as it is fast enough for the rate at which I take photos, but I understand why they put in the CFexpress. I just gave away my CF cards when I sold my 5D Mark IV and purchased two 64gb CFexpress cards. I filled the first card in about 1/2 of a wedding day so I kind of wish I had bought 128gb, but they are so pricey. I will add more when time goes by and the price goes down on them. Hope that helps!
@@ShaneLongPhotography Thanks Shane! Just going to have to spend the money on both the camera AND those cards. I agree, 2 SD's is more than enough for me and my shooting. I just can't bring myself to go with the lower image resolution of the R6 - I'm afraid I'll regret the decision. Good tip on going with the 128gb cards, too. Again - appreciate your video and for your response. Cheers!
you hit on the exact issue I am having. the issue of cropping with a 20 megapixel camera. but I am still probably going to get the r6. I just don't think I need 45 megapixels. even though I would like to. so hard to decide.
Medium Raw sounds great, but I cannot find any reference in the manual or advertising as to its existence. C-raw is not fewer MP and is not medium raw. I would love this feature. Can you point to anywhere it can be verified?
Unfortunately, it isn't on there. I think I had seen it in a DPReview write up. Just the c-raw. So that is one think I liked better about the Mark IV. I could run medium raw to my backup card. Now I can only run RAW to both cards. Or C-Raw to both. But I can't do Raw to one and C-Raw to the other. But it does have medium JPEG ;) This camera is insane though! So excited to share my upcoming videos!
Thanks Andrew! I don't have any presets available at the time, but I have had multiple requests for them so maybe it is something I can think about doing in the future!
I am on the same boat like you as I also crop a lot as I shoot birds/wildlife. How often do I get full frame of birds/wildlife? Almost down to zero because we can't get close to them. The only way to get a decent size image is cropping. 12 fps at 45 mp is huge for me. R5 is the way to go.
You’ll never track or keep birds in focus like an A9ii can! No way....why? The sensor readout speed is less than 1/60s on the R5...on A9 you get a sensor readout at 1/160s with zero blackout. The 24mpx is plenty...no need for 45 or 61mpx. Also, high mpx will require higher shutter speeds all the time (like the A7riv so I got rid of it). Also A9 series performs 60 AF calculations per second...R5 will have EVF lag and blackout....for wildlife NO THANKS

But.. but!.. but.. overheat?!.. I hardly crop with my 24mpx, since resolution. There was a rumor running that Canon develops 70mpx camera (5Dsr successor), if it was true, low on video features and have a reasonable price, that would be dope. So much fun with high resolution timelapses.
Great question! I started out with a Canon Rebel 12 years ago and just slowly learned and upgraded. I would look at the Canon RP if you are just starting. It is cheaper but the lenses will work on the pro models if you end up upgrading.
They killed it for me with the 20mb, I love canon and it's been taking me now 4 months to decide I was praying canon wouldn't fuck up but they did. Going with sony a7riii
Great question! I actually have never liked battery grips as I shoot with two cameras at all times and I don't want the extra weight. But some of my friends use them and love the ease on their wrist and the extra battery life.
Depends. Let’s wait for tests. Especially because the r6 could possible create the better image quality with better low light capabilities and less noise. We will have to see comparisons I would say.
Hi Shane, great video and phenomenal pictures. I recently switched to Sony from canon and have been extremely disappointed in hunting focus in low light using flash photography when with high iso. I just never had this problem with my 5Div. How is it's low light capabilities and focus, for example, low light dance floor and darker environments? How high would you go with iso before grain is too high to deliver to the client? Thanks!!
Great question! The R5 has been incredible for me in low light high ISO! It focuses better when I photograph the wedding dances than my 5D MKIV ever did. It can even face detect people dancing!!! I cover it a little in my full R5 Review.ruclips.net/video/l8izgCPnrHc/видео.html Hope that helps!
nice trolling dude,. hahahaha its impossible that R5 and R6 will hunt in low lights,. probably sony will hunts more in low lights,. when jared and ortiz make a review about it,. sony sucks in low light autofocus,.
An incredible camera overall by the sound of it. Just wondering though at this stage as to whether it is more a “Beta” or test model given that it reportedly overheats when in video mode. Surely Canon would have found that out during testing and one would hope that such an expensive model like the R5 would have had that issue fixed prior to release. Perhaps the next iteration will address this.
Hey Linda! I am not sure on the video side of things as I just use the R5 for photos! I am sure they will release firmware updates to it, but so far it works incredibly for my photo needs!
@@ShaneLongPhotography - Especially when using two bodies and you want to "copy" settings from one to the other while you're walking on uneven terrain and the sun is in your eyes.
OMG! Unexpected choice. Most people say: You don't need 45mpx for weddings. Basic argument over choosing lower mpx. I will ask why? Because they are lower end clients and they don't need high ress images. They don't need best quality images for their one of the most important day. Yeah, tell this to your clients. Pushing for 8k and future proofing for video is an argument, but for photo. You're are fine with 20mpx. Tell me how people will look at their photos with 20mpx on their 8K monitor after 10years. Will say: At least it is our wedding photos. Btw I'm over dramatizing , but for the clarity.
20mpx will give you much cleaner high ISO images which translates to better quality. R6 will have superior image quality unless you print wall size prints.

i think 20mp is good enough,. 45mp is over kill for wedding photography,. no.1 here in the Philippines are medium of marketing is Facebook and Instagram,. this social apps normally downscaling highresolution photos into KB only,. no.2 most people now a days,. always uses their cellphones if their looking for photographers to shoot for their weddings,. thats why most of them will just scrolldown photos and look it in fast phase,. they don't pixel peep,. no.3 in 3rd world country like phillipines,. majority of people using only 1080p monitor to their TV's and Computer Screens,. probably 95% uses 1080p,. thats why 20mp will still be sharp to their eyes,. im sorry to say i don't agree on what your saying,. its non sense,. that R5 soon will be overshadowed by the next generation eos Rii or Eos RPii,. when canon announces R7 & R10 you know your fucked up if you already buy canon eos R5
Hey Kenji! Thanks for your thoughts! I have good friends from the Philippines! The R6 is a great camera. Bet you are liking it! I bought the R5 and love it! Hope you have a great day!
If you buy into all the RUclips/Sony Ambassador hype (like Gerald Undone) you should buy a Sony A7SIII and happily hand your clients 12 MP photos! LOL.
I love Gigapixel AI but this is not advisable for anyone else reading that requires higher megapixel for large prints for deep cropping. The AI guesses and "paints in" graphical information, sometimes artifacts. Do your tests with the trial to understand where it works and where it doesn't, but it's not an absolute replacement for a native high quality high resolution shot. Topaz doesn't advertise it on this specific way either.
@@nubscrub I don't use the trial but the paid version. And agreed, more original megapixels are better but you can remove or heal artifacts for a reasonable part. So you still are getting way more megapixels as without Gigapixel AI.

Great question! I started out with a Canon Rebel 12 years ago and just slowly learned and upgraded. I would look at the Canon RP if you are just starting. It is cheaper but the lenses will work on the pro models if you end up upgrading.
Yes! Can’t wait to see the images you create with the R5. This is definitely my next camera.
It is going to be fun! Looking forward to seeing the extra detail! Pumped for you to get it when the time comes!
They killed it for me with the 20mb, I love canon and it's been taking me now 4 months to decide I was praying canon wouldn't fuck up but they did. Going with sony a7riii
Each has to figure out what is important to you in a camera and find a model that works! All the best in your new camera!
I forgot to ask... Do you think you will be getting the battery grip as well?
Great question! I actually have never liked battery grips as I shoot with two cameras at all times and I don't want the extra weight. But some of my friends use them and love the ease on their wrist and the extra battery life.
I crop a good bit too. So I totally agree with your decision.
Thanks Eric! Not sure why it took me so long to come to that conclusion!
R5 or R6 , which one is suitable for wedding photography?
I think but will be amazing for wedding photography! Two card slots and IBIS! Just came down to how many megapixels I wanted!
That's the reason why I chose the R5.....cropping.
Agreed! Have fun! It is so hard to wait for it to arrive!
In addition to the extra resolution I chose the R5 because I rely on the top LCD display and the R6 doesn't have it.
Agreed! I didn't realize how much I use it till the my last wedding when I found myself glancing down every once in a while to check settings.
Dude! I love everything you just said!!! Coudn't agree more! Well said! I'm all about future proofing.
20mpx will give you much cleaner high ISO images which translates to better quality. R6 will have superior image quality unless you print wall size prints.
@@njrtech Much I think is not a word that firs here. Just better. For me 45mpix has better feel of depth and looks more sharp. And high end. Comparing 24mpx Nikon with 45mpx Nikon.
So many choices: R6, Z6s. Or wait for the R and Z6 to drop in price
It is a great to have so many amazing choices!
What you end up going with?
Luis Perez waiting until October for Z6s announcement. Either Z6s or R6 because of new processors and superior eye AF & tracking compared to last generation
i think 20mp is good enough,.
True 🙌🏾 More expensive .... but still ✅
It is such a great camera :)
Great video, i went with the R5 also for the same reasons. However, I’m no wedding photographer
Good choice! It looks like it is going to be incredible!
If you buy into all the RUclips/Sony Ambassador hype (like Gerald Undone) you should buy a Sony A7SIII and happily hand your clients 12 MP photos! LOL.
Ha ha. To each their own right?!
The a7s3 isn’t meant for photos 😂
Have you already tried Topaz Gigapixe AI? Means more resolution, even with the R6. 😉
I haven't! I can look into it!
@@ShaneLongPhotography With a 20 MP file you will get a 120 MP filesize. Works great. That gives the 20 MP sensor advantage over the R5. 😉
