Problem with that is, on top of that connection in itself being a bit of a stretch and that those weapons are okay and bad respectively, there's ALREADY a hat that is meant to go with that set, and it actually looks good with other sets

I really think that Soldier coming across parts of a bomb and wearing it as a trophy (In a battle that he didn't even fight in) makes complete sense. He would do that, and would probably choose it over a stainless pot. However, you're right that it doesn't fit his outline at all; the front end of a bomb would seem more in line.
I think the raccoon hat makes sense. He has a love for raccoons and I'm the comics later on has some on or around him a lot. We have one biting a belt pouch and one on his head, we just need one for the shoulder and back.
So I've been watching a lot of your videos regarding the TF2 workshop - and I have to agree with most (if not all) of it. I've been making stuff for the workshop for about a year now, so I'm still really new to the scene. The stuff I submit is exclusively warpaints as that's something that best suits my skill set - I do it as a hobby for a game I truly love. But even though I'm new I've noticed a really interesting trend with my submissions. The stuff that fits into the TF2 art style, that really respects the colour scheme simply doesn't get the same amount of attention as the flashier stuff. In just this last week I've done 2 vastly different submissions. The 1st was an 80s themed paint with very saturated pink textures that shine like its nobodies business. The other was 70s themed and took colours straight from the tf2 colour scheme. Of the two I (as the creator) feel that the latter better fits the game and is better made (certainly took longer to make) and yet of the 2 its the first submission that got all the awards and high ratings as opposed to the average ratings the second submission got. And from conversations with other creators, it seems that they have similar experiences. Just thought id share. Make of it what you will.
The beautiful industrial cold war us 60s 70s aesthetic and world tf2 prides and breaths on is somehow brutally underused and undeappreciated nowadays by both creators and community. I find it extremely sad when it's one of the things that keeps me on this game.
The same tinpot arguement could be easily made for the dud honestly, soldier goes out like a nutcase to fight an already done war, finds a broken dud bomb and makeshifts it for a helmet. Except it looks annoyingly heavier than a tin pot and sticks out like a top hat. Can we just have actual “hats?” The dud has a nice IDEA. But terrible concept and execution. Modelling is great as the first comments say but you have to ask them: would they wear it in-game fulltime in a serious loadout? No. I wouldn’t These creators dont give enough credits to the “individuals” voting the items. They accuse instead a nonexistent hivemind collective who blindly follow a creator. People are a lot more sentient than you’d like to cope. They don’t like it, simple as that, it was not a call to arms from a creator that made me decide to dislike this hat. I just wouldn’t want to wear it nor see it in-game. Sorry?
Of course soldier would use a pot for a helmet. He's insane. He's okay with being resourceful and making whatever he has into a functional tool for killing people. Plus it still LOOKS like a helmet. What that creator made had no thought put into it. No soul for the game. He saw the trend of stupid tall hats that have a vague connection to the character and made one himself.
Ok so....I think this definitely tried a LITTLE harder then the train of thought or other ones in that vein and honestly it's much better...would I use it? Hell no but you can tell that they are trying although maybe a little to sensitive so I can commend that...hopefully this workshopper grows to make much better hats in the future :)
I love the cynicism of putting it in a screenshot with the Air Stike (which, subjectively, has always looked like a bit of a sore thumb to me, it's too bulbous and the color doesn't quite work for the class' palette) in order to be like, "it's themed after something that's already in the game, therefore it MUST belong in the game!!
@@daniel.holbrook i can understand the criticism of the color, but i personally really love the design i think its creative and cool but really the biggest thing i can think of that makes it fit (which is a REALLY bad argument on my part) is that i can’t think of how else it would be done that wouldn’t be worse. like idk u could make it look like an airplane instead of a bomb? but i think that the bomb would look better. maybe if instead it was black with yellow squares it would fit better, or if it wasn’t so large and as u put it bulbous. I really like the airstrikes design but i also agree that it could fit the art direction better and the colors don’t fit so well.
Good point, but counterargument for the raccoon hat. I like it. It matches with the other raccoon cosmetic and makes my solider look like a crazy person willingly covered in raccoons.
i dont agree with the raccoon one. he lives with raccoons its resonable one could have just jumped on top of his head and soldier being soldier just didn't care
i can understand the appeal, it's like this cool gnarly bomb case but the more you look at it and the more it is present right up your face you just stop taking it like a bomb it turns into this weird rusted cap with a girder on top like wtf
Honestly, I think the Train of Thought, Hell Helm, and Tank Top would’ve worked better in a sort of “buddy cosmetic” role like Clubsy or the Spycrab, but instead it’s a fun toy they keep in a pocket or on their back in some form. Maybe even hanging onto them like a grenade would. I honestly love the design of the Train of Thought’s Southern style especially, but can’t justify using it cuz it’s a plopped object on Engineer’s head.
Honestly this is a very good video and honestly shoulda gone onto your main channel, I don't think Workshoppers atleast not always want to ignore criticism, I wouldn't be surprised if the issue is just how hostile this situation has gotten, a lot of people have taken to being absolute mongs on the workshop harassing creators, so it kinda makes it hard to look past the harassment and take in genuine criticism, and those that I imagine would want criticism just don't see it past the workshop comment spaz fest, and even if you don't want your viewerbase too, I think most workshoppers dislike you because its hard to see past the bullshit they get sent constantly.
Hats like this aren't made with inention of people actually using them, its the equivalent of a sexy OC pinup sketch on twitter. The character isn't made to function outside of striking a pretty pose for likes. This hat doesn’t function outside of being a display of the creator's 3D modeling skills posted publicly for likes. The workshop isn't a social media. Stop treating it that way.
i dont get it how tf2 can have such a simple artstyle, and people still can make big mistakes creating cosmetics, like if you take your time to create the model in blender or some shit, dont you have at least any idea what would be befitting tf2.
I agree with your points, people shouldn't be formulaic with creating cosmetics, however, I disagree specifically with the example given. The Dud does indeed look like a cosmetic the Soldier would wear, because it can tell a story. For example, Mann Co. makes poor quality, mass-produced products, so it's very likely some of them would fail. So either the Soldier got a defective Air Strike, or shot an Air Strike Soldier out of the sky, and a part of it happened to land into the shape of a soldier helmet. The carnage might've damaged the Soldier's normal helmet, and in the heat of battle, he grabs the nearest "helmet" he finds and throws it on his head. Again, lazy cosmetics suck ass, but I feel this one specifically had a bit more thought into it. Probably just talking out my ass, but whatchagonnado
I disagree. being able to tell a story doesn't necessarily make an item appropriate. The train hat could also tell a story: engineer likes trains, he even has a conductor hat, so he wants to wear a train on his head. It doesn't help the hat look any less out of place.
@Samuel Fisherman I know I’m late to this, but maybe think of it this way. If neither of these items had stories or any sort of lore related to them in any way, which one do you think looks better or less obnoxious. This is obviously a very relative question, but if you have to explain why an item should be in the game, instead of immediately knowing by looking at it. Then it might not be as fitting as you think. Though there could be some exceptions. Just imagine if you’d actually enjoy wearing or seeing the cosmetic in game, and ask yourself if it’s annoying when someone wears it. That will probably tell you if it fits or not.
@@tomlawson4713 yeah, and it doesn't look something completely stupid that is obviously a hat comissioned for the game. maybe if the hat didn't look like a hat attempting to look like a bomb, would it be ok. it's not the style for the game
I also think that the concept of soldier wearing a half destroyed bomb as a replacement for his helmet fits his character well, but yeah, as you said, the execution here is bad. its way too big and in your face. also I totally forgot the lucky shot exists, i rarely ase it nowadays even though its a super awesome hat. im gonna get it next time i play for sure.
Honestly I think the only real issue with this hat is that it kind of already exists. Is this not just the same thing as the Lucky Shot? The lucky shot has been in the game for more than 10 years now and it looks better than this new one. I don’t get why anyone wouldn’t pick it over this.
why the fuck do people make items that go with literally no other cosmetics in the game, and if they dont do that they make a shitty cosmetic set so you have to wear the dumb item with the dumb set
that cosmetic does make sense for the soldier though. It's clearly some type of missile or bomb, which would... usually... kill someone... but not the soldier he has 200 hp
I rather have the plane the set had, it sucks too but at least I can use it to pretend I'm skybombing. Sad thing is that I don't know if he ever did submitted a collection set. Back in the day, creators would post their weapons as mods so you can try em out as reskins. Maybe they still now. I love for creators to release their assets and as mods. It would also give us glorious cut content. Idk how you would reskin an accessory doe.
Honestly the cardboard or more generic santa hats are pretty fine, something they'd cobble together or have laying around for all classes, optimally all classes should have small differences in whatever but that's an ideal that's prob not a good idea to pursue really.
I at least give them credit that the actual model work is great and they based the texture on the airstrike (and original for style 2 even if it makes no sense). Unfortunately, nobody would wear it, nobody would want it and the only time it'd be worn is if it was unusual and the owner is in denial about how bad it is because it is unusual. Could've taken the same idea, but go for the other end of the bomb. It'd be more helmet shape, hell you could even stylize it to look like a spangenhelm (look it up) for an extra "soldier" joke/reference. Hell you could make a whole set where it'd be soldier in medieval armor but it's made out of bomb parts. Maybe it'd still be a bit out there/garish for some people but I'd think it was cool enough to actually wear at least.
Absolutely correct everything you said. Its clear these creators do not give a fuck about what they are really making. They are there to simply expand their portfolio and pump out whatever to maybe make it in for a little cash prize.
On one hand, i believe The Dud absolutely fits the game. In the other: i agree that the hats you've shown like the Train of Thought don't fit the game. Even though I believe the textures and model proportions fit the artstyle, it just feels like they were done simply to execute a pun with the name, like the Tank Top and Helm Helm. I appreciate the effort that went into making these hats, but they just don't work as well as other workshop items that haven't been accepted yet.
Even if a thing like Train of thought or Tank top dose match the game’s art doesn’t mean they should be added in it’s still very lazy and uncreative Example Spy likes to smoke cigarettes let’s make a hat for him instead of say a fedora with an emergency pack of cigarettes on the strap. @@Everik-ct6pg i realize myself the problem with the dud being that 1. it isn't an actual hat, it's a makeshift bomb. which... 2. is just a very lazy pun on the soldier's "character". he shoots rockets!!! let's put a bloody bomb shell on his head!!! 3. the hat itself is just the pun, not the whole joke. it's a very surface level conclusion in what could be something more. like the camera beard for the spy. the first attribute is the beard, with the secondary attribute being the hidden camera. it also looks fake, adding a layer of humour after realization of the hidden camera. the dud? it's a makeshift bomb. the soldier is wearing a makeshift bomb, and he shoots rocket launchers. 1 layer pun. quite lazy.
@@cralo2569 yeah maybe if it looked like an helmet except its made out of bomb parts similarly to the concept of hemet without a home is made of garbage it would be better
It's perfectly acceptable to make something you deem worth working on. From the perspective of the creator, you are gaining valuable experience working on something new. Your critique comes from the perspective of the critic, but the creators do not give a damn because they have their own reasons as to why they do what they do.
I agree with you Zesty, I just can't understand why some people just... Don't want to hear or learn, I mean it's a good idea with a bad execution. You explain why and that's it, you are not making fun of the creator or some shit like that- I'm starting to think that maybe I could give it a try, if I make my own cosmetic I'll send it to you for some feedback
Given how Soldier is nuts a bomb tail sounds like the type of thing he would wear. In fact what is the artstyle, and what is the actual feeling that people aim for? I have seen this come up so many times and I fail to see how a bomb tail is not in keeping yet a tin pot which seems low effort is better? How so? The tail fin looks more wacky and in keeping with soldier then a steel pot.
I feel like creators aren't even doing their reshearch into the item they are making these days, not just for tf2. But its apparent here because this game is so heavily stylelized, and it pops out like a sore thumb.
Unless they claim otherwise. I think they're ingrained with the mindset of taking a very uncharitable interpretation of most negative comments/criticisms. Causing the workshop creators to treat all of them with the same broad-brush with dumb arguments like "TF2 has always been wacky and silly, so these or that absurd design is perfect."
I know it's a 1 year video but I decided to look at this guy's workshop. I believe I found the reason he'd even mentioned the camera bread and the pan helmet is cuz they were taken for inspiration. Look at his submissions of Medicinal Pot (Stainless Steel), Stainless Steel Stock Pot, Disco Disguise (Funky Style). Yeah dude really remastered a trash hat from 2013. And he misses the whole point, this is why you just don't copy something, it gives you shit like this. I straight up want tell this to this dude's face and I bet he knows too. It makes me wonder if they're even aware.
if i got that hat in game id be like yikes.. and recraft it. Model itself is good, this creator has genuinely good skills in modeling, but as an in game hat i dont like it at all.
I have to disagree with you on this one, I get your main issue with it is shape recognition, but it isn’t that bad, and honestly I think this is better than a lot of the stuff put in the game
I've been subscribed for a long time (on my alt account) and have been playing TF2 for about five years now was going to go about creating a war paint and was wondering if you could give feedback on it once it's done
what I wish people would also not do is try and slander your name, or anyones name by saying shit like "Get cancelled by Zesty" or some other shit like, its one thing to give your two piece on someones content, and then there is sending shit like that that is just asking to escalate things for no reason.
Sorry but I think that you are wrong, I think that the hat is trying to represent a fallen piece of a shell that the soldier is using to protect himself, I don’t think it doesn’t fit very well
late to the party here but i dont really agree on this one. This one looks nothing like the hideous Christmas "hats" used as examples, its not completely out of the question that the soldier could be seen wearing something like this, it does not negatively impact the gameplay by obstructing the soldier's class or team or loadout, is it not visually repulsive to look at, and while it doesn't necessarily look like something that would be in the original versions of the game, it would fit fine in tf2's "cosmetic loadout" era that is more colorful and customizable without being "haha silly thing" that modern cosmetics are. I do agree that the cosmetics have gone off the rails, but this is a perfectly fine hat and describing it and others like it as if its the embodiment of every issue with the modern cosmetic era just alienates anyone who isnt an extreme hardcore traditionalist "the game must look like 2007" camper.
I think Valve is 101% to blame for the art style, even more than just being complacent with it and approving the hats. First, I think part of the reason these types of hats are running rampant is because people love those goofy sorts of things - bonus ducks, the racoons you mentioned being in the comics, yetis, etc. I think this is partially a by-product of valve not giving people enough to work with as far as cosmetics, and now people are just kind of scraping to the bottom of the barrel. In addition, nearly every game you jump into that's around long enough (sometimes not even that long) sacrifices integrity of visuals for cosmetics they can get money for. Have a gritty medieval fantasy MMO? Eh, throw a $7.99 mount that looks like a taxi in there. If anything it's a miracle things aren't even *worse* than this. I think a lot of the outrage is lost on people because its too little too late. It's like an attempt to preserve an artstyle that died years ago, arguably before things were more spearheaded by the community.
At this point, I just hope they get rid of the whole workshop thing entirely or people stop making stuff for the game. Option 1, we can just go back to blaming valve for giving out crap or Option 2, only the "good" workshop people stay so everyone can get that quality they are looking for. Gatekeep harder if you want the stuff you like to make it to the top, I guess.
If the voting system had more of an impact on the workshop I feel like it'd be a lot better, and I think there should be an hour threshold for voting, like 300 hours or something, to make sure only the people with a lot of experience can sway a hat in a particular direction, their experience prevents bad hats from being upvoted a ton by people who aren't familiar with the art style and what makes a hat actually interesting to see in-game, without being an annoying eye sore
The Dud is just….fine. Nowhere near deserving the shame you put on some of these other hats. But the Semi-Tame Trapper? Thats PERFECT for this game. Really weird pick for your argument
It's weird he says that it's one of the hats that "doesn't fit the personality of the character" but Solider is stupid enough to wear a broken rocket as a helmet because he thinks it's cool and that he could 'be a rocket' or something, which Zesty basically explains with the pot! The thing it could improve on is the tail end being so large, shrinking it down would make it less bulky. As you said, it's a weird item to fixate on.
@@braystar8578 the way i see it, the dud is a like a "joke" hat. it's obviously a developer made hat, it's like a joke half-written. it doesn't develop into something that actually interests anyone, it's just the pun. instead of making something interesting that isn't 2 dimensional (soldier uses rocket launcher, put a missile on his head hahahahaha) and just phyisically putting a missile/shell on his head isn't very interesting or well-thought out. lucky shot is another hat that has a similar theme, and doesn't glorify a pun on the mercenary's head. also, the dud isn't an actual hat, is it? at least with the pot, it's the first to play that joke, while not putting a character related thing on their head. which is why the dud ends up looking stupid and worthless.

He would do that, and would probably choose it over a stainless pot. However, you're right that it doesn't fit his outline at all; the front end of a bomb would seem more in line.
Most of the theses object in the head cosmetics would be far better if they were located in another region of the body, like in the back for example.
I think the raccoon hat makes sense. He has a love for raccoons and I'm the comics later on has some on or around him a lot. We have one biting a belt pouch and one on his head, we just need one for the shoulder and back.
Yeah instead of hunting the raccoon he just grabs it and puts it on his head
I believe that the hats made are just a bit too garish and just looks so out of place in the game. Simple is best in my opinion
All my favorite spy hats are spies most simplest hats

Can we just have actual “hats?”
The dud has a nice IDEA. But terrible concept and execution. Modelling is great as the first comments say but you have to ask them: would they wear it in-game fulltime in a serious loadout? No. I wouldn’t
These creators dont give enough credits to the “individuals” voting the items.
Them: “it’s just a hat” 🧢
Me: it’s a way of life
"I'm gonna lay you out!"
-Engineer with train on his head
i dont agree with the raccoon one. he lives with raccoons its resonable one could have just jumped on top of his head and soldier being soldier just didn't care
i can understand the appeal, it's like this cool gnarly bomb case but the more you look at it and the more it is present right up your face you just stop taking it like a bomb it turns into this weird rusted cap with a girder on top like wtf
Dw Mr.Zesty there was 2 cricket/cicadas on my kitchen even if i tried i couldn't hear the power drill
Are you telling me that the soldier would not use a half shell of a bomb as a helmet during battle if he lost his normal one?
i dont get it how tf2 can have such a simple artstyle, and people still can make big mistakes creating cosmetics, like if you take your time to create the model in blender or some shit, dont you have at least any idea what would be befitting tf2.
It's not the art _style_ that's being violated, it's the *art **_direction_** and **_theming_*
We already have a cosmetic that suits that backstory perfectly, in a much more suitable way, it’s called the Lucky Shot.
I mean, would you rather find a pot or non-detonated lower half of the bomb?
I don’t get why anyone wouldn’t pick it over this.
hrrrngg…jesse…we need to comment first on the new zestyjesusalt video…jesse
The best hats are hats or head ornament type things someone could buy in real life. These weird monstrosities are really out of place
This was very constructive and well thought out, good vid 👍
This is so true, I'm currently working on my own community update and I'm taking this into consideration when making the cosmetics
why the fuck do people make items that go with literally no other cosmetics in the game, and if they dont do that they make a shitty cosmetic set so you have to wear the dumb item with the dumb set
i can completly agree with this video for sure.
that cosmetic does make sense for the soldier though.
How many times are people going to pu random object on mercs head
it will never end
Absolutely correct everything you said. Its clear these creators do not give a fuck about what they are really making. They are there to simply expand their portfolio and pump out whatever to maybe make it in for a little cash prize.
I buy those weird hats. I use them. Well not wear it. I use them to rebuild a headgear from crafting to get something better
Even if a thing like Train of thought or Tank top dose match the game’s art doesn’t mean they should be added in
it’s still very lazy and uncreative
Example Spy likes to smoke cigarettes let’s make a hat for him instead of say a fedora with an emergency pack of cigarettes on the strap.
LETS JUST MAKE A GIANT CIGARETTE JUST PLACES ON HIS HEAD!!!11!11! 8D
Things should match the characters not some sort of Tim Burton crazy land
@@someweirdlookingdude7901 NGL, it feels like you're just regurgitating Zesty's opinion instead of forming your own, because that's like, his exact wording.
@@Everik-ct6pg Maybe it's because most of us agree on what Zesty says?
I don't want a shitty dud that I won't ever use, and will probably never see used except by 3 friendlies. Why can't we get proper fedoras and helmets and other hats rather than these one-offs which only serve as a mere pun or joke?
Thankfully, Valve seems to be focusing more on sets right now. Hope they start only adding actual worthwhile cosmetics, so all the pissy creators doing this out of spite because nobody likes their shitty cosmetics go away.
@@Everik-ct6pg i realize myself the problem with the dud being that
1. it isn't an actual hat, it's a makeshift bomb. which...
2. is just a very lazy pun on the soldier's "character". he shoots rockets!!! let's put a bloody bomb shell on his head!!!
3. the hat itself is just the pun, not the whole joke. it's a very surface level conclusion in what could be something more. like the camera beard for the spy. the first attribute is the beard, with the secondary attribute being the hidden camera. it also looks fake, adding a layer of humour after realization of the hidden camera.
the dud? it's a makeshift bomb. the soldier is wearing a makeshift bomb, and he shoots rocket launchers.
Oh shit here we go again

Liking the video just for this part alone.
I agree with you Zesty, I just can't understand why some people just... Don't want to hear or learn, I mean it's a good idea with a bad execution. You explain why and that's it, you are not making fun of the creator or some shit like that-
I'm starting to think that maybe I could give it a try, if I make my own cosmetic I'll send it to you for some feedback

A good soldier voice.
i dipped my toes into rust workshop, didn't do great. but was mindful as to why.
We need some of the old retired hats back like the soldier's stash & the Hermes😅
There's silly and there's stupid. Way too many hats added recently firmly cross that line and end up being ugly crate filler. Nice video.
Basically it's just the bottom end of a bomb and not a hat
Guess I'm one of the few to use a Tank Top for soldier.
(It was one of the few cool and cheap unusuals for soldier)
LOVE your soldier impression
I mean I kinda like the soldier hat but he already has a missile or a bomb for a hat no?
I literally just had a caughing fit before watching this video and I honestly think my soul left my body for a second
Mild AVGN energy
This is the first video i've seen Zesty use a facecam in, and Zesty looks alot like Ryan Renolds during the entire video
i thought it fit cuz it looked like it's made from the air strike
did this need to be 20 minutes
Hat idea: "the piece of hat"
It's literally a cartoon shit on their head. The hat would literally be a piece of crap
I have to disagree with you on this one, I get your main issue with it is shape recognition, but it isn’t that bad, and honestly I think this is better than a lot of the stuff put in the game
Dr's Dapper Topper is the best hat in game i don't care what anyone says deal with it.
only $1.13 in steam wallet, opinion ignored

Great Workshop video just as your last few were :)
if you want the number in the thumbnail to represent pi, it should be '...58209...' not '582009...'

the most important lesson
You should make your own cosmetics it would be neat to see what you're capable of :)
Airstrike hat?

Snipers.
those community cosmetics makes me want to download some mode that would disable every cosmetic in the game...
The asmondgold of angrily staring at the tf2 workshop.
I've been subscribed for a long time (on my alt account) and have been playing TF2 for about five years now was going to go about creating a war paint and was wondering if you could give feedback on it once it's done
what I wish people would also not do is try and slander your name, or anyones name by saying shit like "Get cancelled by Zesty" or some other shit
like, its one thing to give your two piece on someones content, and then there is sending shit like that that is just asking to escalate things for no reason.
i understand and i definitely agree but i think you should be calmer
I completely agree.
Raccoon is goated tho
12:30 i was thinking of this hat the entire video
Zesty good take
At this point, I just hope they get rid of the whole workshop thing entirely or people stop making stuff for the game.

9:32 I like that hat.
