- Today we look at the "new" issued Air Force A2 Jacket from 1999 and compare it a bit with the WWII A2 jacket. See the major differences between the two models and how they're built.
Buy this Modern Issue you see on the video here: www.ebay.com/i...
Buy a decent reproduction A2 here: amzn.to/49Fooj5
This was very informative, Thanks.
Thank you!
The new A2 Jacket looks strange/weird to me. I prefer the old and classic one from WW 2 era and love my repro :) Think about to purchase a second reproduction of the old A2. Thank you for your videos :) Can you do "Vietnam Flak Jacket"? Best wishes from Germany.
I'm a purest myself. The new A2 looks too much like a fashion version of the original. Once I can find a Flak jacket I will!
I never wore my issued A2, I ended up giving it away. The one I wore was from Pop's Leather in Turkey, purchased in "the alley" outside base. I got mine in calf skin, and it's really nice but I wish I'd gotten it in goat.
awesome story about a jacket. Yes goat would probably hold up over time better than calf. Glad you have that one still.
Such a cool A-2 jacket, I need one.
you do!
@derekdoeschannel The A-2 is a great one, but the A-1 is very rare. You'll see different jacket types today with similar crops, but with the neck cut off.
Very rare to find an original. They do make repros.
@@derekdoeschannel Or you could always have one custom made.
I don't think the fit it's a bad as you're implying. You have to get the correct size for sure. I'm 6'2" 195 pounds, and I wear a 42 short for it to fit correctly. It doesn't bell out around my waist, which is 32 inches. It sits just below my waistline while wearing 501 jeans, as it should. Now, I couldn't wear a thick sweatshirt or sweater underneath, but my uniform or flightsuit is not an issue.
The key to a modern A-2 is knowing the exact measurements you need and hunting or paying full price.
Enjoyed the video. I agree they're not made like they used to be, but people wouldn't buy them if they were. People are more interested in how they look right now and not how long something will last.
Thanks. If you're wearing a 42 short then they're built way larger than the ww2 sizings. I'll have to see if I can find one maybe in a 38 or something as it sounds like that would probably fit me. Yes, for the most part people want fashion more than function or quality. Thanks for watching!
@derekdoeschannel my 42 short is 23.5 pit to pit with a 25-inch back and 22-inch shoulder to shoulder. I hope this helps give you an idea in your hunt. The only reason I can get away with the 23.5-inch pit to pit is the gussets. Non gusseted, I'd be 24.5-25 pit to pit.
That modern issued A-2 looks odd. If it was issued to me I’d never wear it. Probably why they end up at Goodwill or go for next to nothing. Military contracts usually go to the lowest cost supplier that meet basic specs so when it says military grade it actually means lowest cost. That’s what I’ve heard anyway. The Aero of course is way nicer. I’d still choose Eastman contract A-2s over Aero. I’d really like a Good Wear but don’t want the excessive wait time to get it. A good review on the Good Wear A-2 would be awesome. Thanks for the review.
Thanks! Yes, Aero or Eastman is a better choice, but 10x the cost. I only have had one Good Wear but it wasn't an A2. He makes the best hands down.
Much like the Aero better. The Saddlery is not in the same tailoring shall we say?
Aero is my personal jacket so, yes.
Thanks for great video again. By the way that cap of yours looks cooler than the railroad style, cause the railroad one is so baggy and high. Is that also done by you 👍
Thanks No this one is an A3 mechanic cap repro from ww2
looking to get a a2 jacket without breaking the bank looking at cockpit usa what is good out there thanks
for the price of cockpit, look for a used Aero or Eastman. Also I've heard good things with 5 Star.
@@derekdoeschannel Not to knock the overseas stuff. But I like to stay with the place they were originally made. Some of the US jackets made in the late eighties like Protech are good jackets and can be had for less than a couple of hundred dollars if you can find one in your size. The one I bought o eBay, is my go to A-2 now even over my Aero Leather Scotland.
nice wright up merry christmas
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you.
I never seen a Fighter Pilot in a Leather Jacket I Like Alpha Pilot jacket 🧥
Not many still wear leather but some do.
Most aircrew used the nomex flight jacket for flying duties, and will wear the A-2 when in dress blues, but every once in a while some guys would wear them when flying. I was a C-130 Flight Engineer from 1986 to 1998, and my A2 was issued to me in 1988. It's a Cooper, no underarm gussets, no side warmer pockets. Command patches are bigger then normal, with black trim around the outside, name tags were brown with the black edging. I retired in 1998, so I am not even sure if the A2 is still issue or not.
@ Sorry what is
nomex My Father was Pilot since l‘m 10 l became my first Alpha jacket He order this directly from USA -lm from Germany now you became in Store Flight jacket for
15 € but those is shit from China.✌🏻
@@thomasmaehnicke2506 Oh thats ok, I assumed a lot not saying that. Nomex is the material US flight suits, flight gloves and flight jackets are made of. Its a cloth that won't burn, and when exposed to flame or high heat, it will just char and turn to ash without igniting. The flight jackets are pretty nice, the nomex on them is shiny almost like silk and come in a heavily insulated winter grade, and a thinner summer grade. The winter grade issue designation is the CWU-36P, the summer grade is CWU 45P. They look identical other than the insulation. The genuine nomex ones are pricey, companies make copies from nylon that look like them but are much less expensive.
@ Okay l understand it gives a great store in Mannheim/Germany they have only for Pilots all those nice things l think they must have nomex in the Alpha jacket stands : Flyermans. Jacket Heavy and the Stock Nr. I thank for this Information
Have a nice time ✌🏻
