    You're playing so many JRPG's, how do you have the time to play that many?

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад +11

      +Tartar I tend to binge play on my days off from work, and sometimes after work too. I'll probably play some tonight when i get home for a couple hours. It's been a little tougher lately now that i don't work from home anymore, which is part of why this review took so long. :)

    • @Tartar

      SuperDerek RPGs I've pretty much stopped playing longer RPG's on anything but emulators (God bless the ability to put PSX and PS2 discs into your DVD drive and run it on the PC) since the speed-up feature greatly speeds up the combat time/walking time.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад +9

      +Tartar I used to do that a lot with SNES RPGs too, back when I used to emulate a lot, and I found that it greatly reduced my overall enjoyment, but I couldn't help but use the hell out of it. But that's probably just because I lack self control with regard to some things. ^_^

    • @Tartar
      @Tartar 8 лет назад +3

      SuperDerek RPGs What do you mean by you lost enjoyment? Personally I can't really be bothered with trivial things like random encounters that can be beaten by spamming attack, loading screens and watching long summon animations multiple times (I'm looking at you Knights of The Round...).
      Are you saying that you found that skipping these things made you enjoy the game less overall? Or do you mean that you couldn't help but abuse the system to grind or something?

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад +8

      +Tartar Yeah, I kind of meant in both ways. I would use the hell out of it, because I thought it was boring to travel and grind and stuff, but I ended up losing my "connection" with the games, if that makes any sense. Fast-forwarding, making mistakes, rewinding, etc. Like, it killed my immersion, it made the music sound bad, and it eventually just felt like I was fast-forwarding through the entire game. It wasn't always the case, but I feel like once I switched back to original hardware, my appreciation for games increased quite a bit. :)

    I don't like having to use the radar to find locations, makes no sense even for an RPG. Walk right through a town and miss it because I didn't use it in the right spot. XD

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад +4

      +Pimpalicious1987 Schrodinger's town. It both exists and doesn't exist until you use the radar! xD

    • @Colgruv
      @Colgruv 6 лет назад +3

      Think about it this way: On the overworld, each step your sprite takes is the equivalent of several miles of actual walking. The implication is that you're traveling through a wasteland with few roads, therefore it would actually be pretty difficult to find what you're looking for if you're not familiar with the area.
      The in-game mechanic of using a radar to "unlock" locations is an abstract simulation of the process of combing an area for a specific location, and then remembering that location based on surrounding landmarks.

      Wild Arms has always been a popular, household name in Japan and still is, it still gets Japan only releases. It's a smart business move because Wild Arms titles sell poorly in the rest of the world and the economy is not strong enough right now to take that kind of risk.

    I think when I played this game back then, I actually didn't mind or notice the localization because the localization for a lot of games in this era were kind of weird. But that is a good point. I'd have to replay it. I also remember people did not like the radar system for the overworld, but I also didn't mind it because I liked looking for stuff. But while overall I do actually like the first game better, I do like Wild Arms 2 a lot. The tools system was improved on, dungeon puzzles were also improved on, I think I like the battle system and ost in 2 more than 1. And Kanon and Brad are still to this day some of the most badass characters in games period. The scene where Brad shows up out of nowhere with a railgun is a really amazing scene. Overall, I am happy people still play games like these. Nice job on the vid!

    I absolutely loved Wild ARMs and when Wild ARMs 2 came out I bought it immediately and hoped for more of the same. Being a teenager I was hoping for a direct sequel so when I turned it on and everyone had ARMs (not just androids like Rudy in 1) and ARMs no longer meant Ancient Relic Machine...it really turned me off. It was a dumb reason to put a game down but here we are. I never picked it back up although I still own it. I don't know if I could get past the bad translation at this point though, not having nostalgia to blunt that for me.

      Both Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy are Level 5 IPs, they seem to be doing well with Yokai Watch, Professor Layton and Ni no Kuni. I wish they came back to their PS2 golden age. Don't really know what happened to Ark the Lad. We definitely need a new Wild Arms though... There's no other JRPG standing that does the "turn based combat + jrpg world building structure" meets "Zelda like dungeons with tool specific puzzles" anymore. I mean, only Lufia 2, Golden Sun and Wild Arms did this well and Lufia is dead, Golden Sun has a chance of revival with the new Smash game and Wild Arms is kind of long forgotten. I'd add Dragon Quest and Breath of Fire games as games that did dungeons very well while staying jrpg at core. Same could be said about Tales of Symphonia.

    I feel like people forgot that the wild west didn't exist in a vacuum where everything was
    the wild west.
    The west was the west. Frontier towns that developed.
    New york still existed. Even going back to frontiermen times. Where monarchs still existed.
    It wouldn't make sense for a whole world to be wild west-y. ANd This game ups it more evenly I feel.
    It has more of a colonial type feel with the militia. But if you watch cowboy movies, you'll know that those play a big part in them anyway.
    But it drops the more medieval elements even though it has aristocrats. And while the towns were more dusty maybe(I think they just seemed brighter). This one had more ARMs users in the main cast.
    perhaps their equal in that and just go about it different ways. But I definitely don't think it's lesser in that theme

    While I would agree it is more tedious, I found this game really interesting on how many secrets the game has. I actually haven't seen as much Puzzle solving in most games that are classed as puzzle solving like Zelda Doing FP over mana does make you feel a bit more powerful especially with the mage classes like Lilka, but most of the weapons such as Arm Users like Ashley and Brad and Finite amount of Ammo that would make them rely on their FP attacks to get most out of there guns, before they run out.
    Also the bosses are also very interesting, it is probably the only RPG that allows you to target different parts of a Boss, Taking out these Certain parts, can not only give extra Experience and Items, but also change the way a boss will fight, either making it more dangerous or making it weaker.
    While I can't say how it compares to the likes of Wild Arms 1, it not as mediocre as Most people think of it.

    I feel like playing this game as a kid permanently fucked my understanding of English and ability to have normal conversations. I had no concept of what a poor localization was, so I just assumed all of the dialogue was legitimate.

    Just starting WA 2 after finishing WA 1.. is this an anthology those series? Just seems like the interesting parts of WA 1 that would have been fun to learn more about aren’t present?.. not looking for direct spoilers, but Rudy wasn’t mentioned? ARMs are a fundamentally different thing? Or was the later issue a localization thing? Thanks for all the reviews

    The review of this game is always mediocre by many. I do not believe that this is a step down compared to the first game. Its now fully 3D good graphics not amazing better sound better almost everything. I give this game 8/10 unlike others who gave it 4 5 out of 10.

      +Austin Ellis Ack, I completely forgot that I was working on those! I'm actually working on a slight rebranding of The Game Collection, which might start in another month or two. After that happens, I think shirts will become a thing. And something else that I'm really excited for, it's kind of unique, I don't know of anybody else that sells these things... But I'll announce that when it's for sure going to happen. I honestly don't even know if there will be interest, but we'll see. :)

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад

      +senatortombstone Alter Code F seems like a game I'd probably enjoy. It's basically an enhanced remake of WA1 but it has some bugs, from what I hear. Either way it's the hardest one to acquire in the series, so it's a nice collector's piece if nothing else. :)

    Sadly they cut out the vocals of the original opening of the japanese version for the US release. I actually love the jpanaese opening MUCH more. Also interesting to know: In the JP version there are some voiceacted scenes, but nothing that will blow your mind.

    • @GadGades
      @GadGades 8 лет назад +1

      +DesMondesBlut they almost always did that back then. At least it's still appropriate and the same music and not something like what dubs did for anime songs.

    I loved the original Wild Arms but never played the second one. It sounds like if I can get past the poor translation I'll probably enjoy it. I've played plenty of games with crap localization, Breath of Fire II comes to mind, and still enjoyed them, so maybe I'll give this a shot. Thanks for the review, Derek :D

      +Kinaldio Any time man. And if you didn't have a problem with BoFII, then this game might not be too terrible. During my playthrough, I made several comparisons, mostly saying I didn't know which was worse. :)

    Sweet review! Nice job on the writing this time, especially. You needed to make up for the game's translation.
    Also, what filter do you use over your PS1 games? Or all your games, if you do the same thing every time.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад +1

      +Tom W I use a "grid" effect in Premiere to generate the scan-lines. I only do it to games that are best displayed on CRT, because I prefer that aesthetic, really helps soften the jaggies on lower resolution titles. Unfortunately, it's something I have to add in post, otherwise I'd broadcast my streams with those too. :)

    so wild arms 2 is more traditionally structured than wild arms 1? i remember the first one you had to choose a character and featured a lot of puzzles, neither of which i liked.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад +1

      +WEAREPLAGUED Well... You DO still pick a character at the beginning, but they're just like 15-20 minute backstories before everyone converges. And Wild Arms still places an emphasis on puzzles based on various tools each character can acquire. So if you weren't digging that in WA1, then you might want to pass up on WA2. :)
