- One of the most requested videos has finally been done. I would like to thank Jon for providing such a beautiful Gold Dust Day Gecko (Phelsuma Laticauda) for this video! In this video the Bio Dude goes over step by step on how to setup your Day Gecko bioactive kit as well as what each component does, how it works and overall maintenance and care of this awesome species. The Dude utilities his one of a kind, hand crafted Terra Fauna substrate that utilizes the Dude's bishop to drive the natural, organic processes that create the bioactive ecosystem. This is a fully self cleaning, self maintaining bioactive terrarium. The brand terrarium is an Exo Terra, 18” x 18” x 24” model.
Day geckos are great beginner lizards, but can be quite fast. They are brilliantly colored, intelligent and do best if kept individually or in pairs in very large enclosures. Males and females can both be aggressive, especially with the larger Phelsuma. They are omnivores that not only eat insects but nectar as well.

That's a smoking terrarium! That day gecko is beautiful! Don't worry about talking too much, it's well needed information and you break it down very easy to understand. Keep on rockin' Josh!
Appreciate that : )
Pretty ugly vivarium but ok
@@holladolla3047 Go elsewhere - all you do is go and talk trash on all my videos, never offer any insight or anything. If you hate what I do why don't you just watch something else? Either your jealous or have too much time on your hands.
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter indeed. I believe it is beautiful
@@holladolla3047 i was always told that if you dont have anything nice to say dont say it
I would love for you to make a video regarding a bio active home for a Red Tail Boa. Peruvian RedTail or whatever. It’s such a popular animal and I think many would benefit.
Where do you find that cage?????
Hey josh, would you ever do a bio active enclosure for a Jungle Carpet Python?? They’re beautiful snakes and I think one of those enclosures would be super cool!
I have one that I uploaded that I did for a Bredli python (Smithers) - Similar. Ill be doing another one at some point.
Hey Aaron. More videos are being planned. Right now, we're running out of space for new animals lol
At 13:16 you can hear the gecko squeak!!!
that was the tank door
I know its been a long time since this has been uploaded but is it possible to also leave the "bio shot" or replace it in any way. We dont rly have this in germany..
its a shame you dont give us a 1-2 minute montage after with the animal and the terrarium.
That’s pretty specific bro
@@Dylan-we5dz not really, it’s good to see the animal enjoying its new home after seeing all of it being set up 😛
I think he knocked the gecko off the table
Benjamin Wilson Yeah I unfortunately bumped the table which caused his cup to fall but he was OK :)
Sometimes when I film not everything goes to plan lol.
Hey Josh, great video I hope you do a lot more. Thank you 🐢🐊🦎🐍🐸
That's a good idea using turface for the drainage layer. I use it with my bonsai trees but have always used perlite in the vivs. I'll have to try it on the next one
Me to use it on bonsai and in my mix for tropical plants it's works very well , will definitely try it as draining layer
How much would it cost for a giant day gecko terrarium and eco system for someone who lives in Wisconsin?
Sorry but Reptisafe will NOT remove calcium from water. It is a conditioner so it will remove chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals. This won’t help at all with calcium deposits.
That, I did not know. That is what I was told - Interesting. Since I use the RODI h20, I never have that problem. Besides natural apple cider vinegar is there something better that you would recommend to help get the hard water stains in something as easy as Reptisafe? Thank you!
There is unfortunately no product that you could add to the water to remove calcium, the water should be filtered through reverse osmosis filter. White vinegar will help to dissolve the stains on the glass or an aquarium scraper on a wet glass will do the job. But water conditionner can’t remove minerals from the water just chemicals.
I love your terrariums set ups by the way. And I went bioactive because of your videos so thank you very much for sharing your experience Josh!
I would suggest giving your day gecko a nice, spray foam background with some wood on it, he would love a basking spot and foam backgrounds can meet that requirement
Where did you get the Exo Terra Glass Terrarium
So, if the terra fauna is good for snakes with no drainage layer, why use one here? I know it can't be the species. Just trying to gain a further understanding of how this system works. I know a drainage layer is necessary for the Flora substrate, just not usually the Fauna.
It is the Firma that does not need a D/L. you need a D/L with the Fauna.
They only live 5 to 7? Did I hear that right?
I find it interesting that you’ve found they try to escape when you go to feed. Personally, my small day geckos will come up to the front when it’s feeding time, and just wait for me to put their food in. Never had one try to escape during feeding or watering time - I’ve even had them come up and eat straight from my hand from time to time. Came back to this video while looking for information on how to rehabilitate day geckos (for some reason I decided to stop and watch hahah), as I was just given a peacock day gecko by a family friend with a slight case of stunting, mbd, and stuck shed. Doing my best to get them up to speed, and hoping they start doing as well as my other little ones soon. Either way, great video, loved all the information you provided! Mine all seem to love having some of the softer broad-leaved hanging false plants to bask on as well, but I definitely agree that going without worked well in this build and was an aesthetically better choice.
I’d love a video of you showing us were you put your thermometer probes! I’m worried bugs will chew the cord, but I don’t want important spots to go unregulated. Thanks
You'll want it at the hottest point of your cage which is usually a basking branch. You rarely want it to touch the soil as this would give you a higher read out than what the ambient humidity is. Don't worry. I've never seen a bug munch on the cords :)
Awesome setup and beautiful monstera delicicosia.
At 8:10 you threw the bottle with the gecko of the table... 🤔 not really nice
yamaha race crew Unfortunately the table got bumped and he fell off but he was OK ;) Sometimes not everything goes to plan when I do the videos :)
I have a massive 24x18x36 bioactive communal set up for my Phelsuma Grandis pair. It has 2 dracaenas, 2 small trees(not sure i bought from biodude at NARBC arlington), 1 pothos, grass, 2 bromeliads i believe.
Awesome! I hope that tank is THRIVING for you!
What is that tank behind you to the left (closest to the door)? It looks amazing, I assume you have a video on it?
Otto Mercer that is my red eye enclosure. I’ll show you guys one of these days! One of the few terrariums I did not film building :)
Ah okay, a video on that would be amazing. It looks incredible!
The Madagascar day gecko at Fuengerola zoo doesn’t have the right living conditions
Callum Crugby aww :(
Very informative thanks
What sized tank should I have for full sized giant day gecko?
Hey there, 18x18x24 or 24x24x36 would work, they will utilize all space given.
Nice!
They from Madagascar but they're born in captivity. Big difference
08:11 R.I.P. gecko.
Damn dude, you take care of the animal first. The way you shat everything inside that terra (the bromelia will go into the cork, oh nvm goes to bottom; random placement of bamboo) earned you a dislike.
I am sorry you didn't like the video, the animal is just fine (and yes, I did accidentally knock it off the table), but it is alive, breeding and thriving if that makes any difference. Good luck with your terrarium journey.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter Fuck it dude let’s go bowling 🎳
accidents happen
Would this work for tokay geckos?
Hey there! we have tokay added to the list of videos we need to do! You can use this video, however make the enclosure more arboreal, such as an exo terra 18x18x24 tall. i will link you some helpful info! ruclips.net/video/EkiKPXwDJxE/видео.html

Hi! So, if I bought this set-up from your store (which, btw, I don't see an option for), would I get the container, and all the substrate you put in, up to the Paper Back Bark? Seems like I'm best to buy my own container, and then buy everything else separately? That was a long way to say that I'd like to create this terrarium, but I don't see a kit for it in your store. And when watching a video in your store, you put more in the container than was shown in the kit to the left of the video. I'm blonde. It'll all work out...
Would a 12 x 12 x 18in cage be a good size for one or two gold dust day geckos?
I’d reccomend a tad bigger
One should be housed in a 24-18-36 or 2
Which one of your bioactive kits would you recommend for the Viper Gecko?
I would recommend the Sahara : )
I went to your website you are out of stock
We are currently working on upgrading and changing the kits to make them more appropriate for the species along with aligned with what we have in our inventory. We hope to have them back in stock soon!
Can you make a video on how to properly set up a blizzard leopard gecko tank. Please. And thank you. Comment here with the link or video when you do. Thanks.
Hello. I was potentially looking to use the canopy option on a similar set up for a day gecko. Will using a heat/basking light on one side of the canopy provide enough of a hot spot for the gecko? Worried since it’s not pointing down? Also any suggestions on a uvb strip to mount?? Thanks!!!
Can you have 1 male and 1 female electric blue gecko and 1 male and 1 female giant day gecko together in the same terrarium if the terrarium is really big?
Take air between the words man, nobody is beating you to hurry, take it easy!
Drink every time he says “my”
YEET
Hey josh wondering if this would be good for a created gecko?, very visually appealing
Could i keep a monstera verevted pkant with them
You absolutely can! You just want to make sure that it is free of any harmful chemicals or pesticides that could harm your animal.
Thank you
I see a lot of videos where people add charcoal to their substrate. Is it not necessary?
Im in houston texas and im interested in buying a few isopods is there any way i can contact you ?
Can this work for electric blue day gecko?
yippee!
how much does this entire setup cost + the little guy?
Thabk you you really helped me

How do you keep your glass so crystal clear? Your terrariums are stunning.
Thanks! The glass gets cleaned daily with RO water or apple cider vinegar spritzed onto a paper towel, then chased with RO water.
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter do your misting systems use RO water as well?
Where did you buy the day gecko?
What’s the difference between this hydrogrow and the white hydrogrow I’ve seen in your other videos.?
this hydrogrow is more expensive
I just got a day gecko! What settings/ humidity levels do you recommend on the water mister?
I’d recommend about room temp, but you don’t want to it to be too warm, or cold at all. So just about lukewarm.
Hey josh! ive been experiencing issues with fungus gnats. any tips?
Hi Brandon. go ahead and email us! customercare@thebiodude.com we can get you taken care of.
Can you do a uromastyx setup. Please 👍
Um, no need for springtails/isopods with the bioshot?
I will get all your organic process' rocking and rolling. I always recommend the bugs in addition but to become bio with my kits you do not need them!
where did you get the bamboo?
We get it from a source in Florida
what is ur source?
@@ruth13KN A family member, sorry
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter That's okay, thank you
Do you ship to Australia?? 🇦🇺
Will this work for the giant day gecko
Grandis/Madagascarensis Yes.
Blue tongue skink enclosure next???
Yup, Ill be doing that video in about 3 weeks.
Do you like springtails for these setups?
Absolutely
What is the hydrogrow drainage substrate specifically made of?
It is cooked calcine clay. Same drainage used for baseball fields and is 100% natural
Sort of like clay kitty litter?
Or cooked kitty litter?
How do u order your stuff to the uk
Don't ship there......yet. Stay tuned!
I wonder if you’ll ever make a LED and UVB bulb combined. Tho it’ll be very expensive and hard to make so it’ll most likely happen 5 years from now.
aren’t you in houston?
yes we are
The Bio Dude Josh Halter that’s what i thought! my local pet store gets all their stuff from you, but i’ve heard mixed reviews about yall. just wanted to check it out for myself and i happened to see yalls video in my recommended!
If you are in Houston you should - We have very good reviews online and via google - I guess you could say haters are going to hate - because what else are they going to do!
Do you ship this to the uk please??
negative....Not yet!
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter aw that's a shame I'd love to get my animals in bio setups like urs
you just tried to cram as many things in there so you could squeeze in some extra advertising. As a result, the tank is horrid, not enough basking spots for the gecko.
Nope, as a species they like to be dense and tight. Sorry you feel it's horrid though, not an adjective I'd use!
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter no, they like a spacy basking spot so they can soak up heat from a heat light. Sorry you think that way.
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter I have to agree with Elijah Yurkovsky, your vivarium isn't suited for day geckos, and you're setting a bad example for aspiring day gecko keepers.
Elijah Yurkovsky bro nature isn’t open.
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter Yes it can dude.
Great as always 👍
Isn't a Day Geko really just a big camelean?
Nope, they Day geckos are the Phelsuma genus and are an entirely different species with different care.
That gecko went for a ride. 🤣🤣🤣
Great info. Thanks 👍👍
So you’re a revolver guy, I respect that.
Thanks, and I am sorry that it showed up. Not suppose to ever be seen, my camera man knows better on how to keep the camera too - Im going have to blur that out, Thank you for bringing that to my attention because I missed it
I had soooo many questions that you answered. Good on you!
Let us know if we can help you further!
The amount of plastic bags you use to fill up a small biological (!) terrarium is not "bio" at all. Love your channel but would also love to see you rethinking your "Bio Dude" packaging :-(
I will one day. On a + note, 100% of my boxes are 100% recycled and have less carbon emissions. We are considered 'green' shippers in TX!
Hello, I was wondering if you have a knob tailed gecko or even if not, do you know if they can be in a tall palidarium.
Ha, this guy actually sucks...
DAY GECKOS DON’T NEED A WATER DISH
They lick water off leaves and walls
Holla Dolla you should always provide a water dish regardless - it doesn’t hurt to offer it so why not.
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter day gecko breeders don’t use water dishes because day geckos lick water off Plants or walls. My Day Gecko, Guapo, only licks water off his bromeliad
@@holladolla3047 I offer my day gecko a water dish as well as misted water and he seems to be fine with both, adding options doesn't really hurt
