For those saying the tank isn't safe, doesn't have enough room, etc. Take a moment to breathe, and consider the following points: 1. Substrate: Topsoil, and even a 50/50 mix of sand and topsoil are safe for beardies once they are about 6-7 inches or larger. 2. insects: Springtails and Isopods will NOT bite your beardie. The superworms and darkling beetles CAN, but with the leaf litter, and biodegradable items, they have their preferred meal. 3. Space: While beardies DO enjoy room to move, most of them also enjoy climbing, burrowing, and overall exploring. Dense wood and plant-life, with plenty of climbing room not only allows them room to move, but gives them the ability to feel safe and secure. 4. Humidity: Contrary to popular belief, your typical bearded dragon (Pogona Vitticeps) does not live in sand dunes and rocky outcrops. They live in the brushlands of Australia. I will leave an image link below to their natural habitat. This environment has a natural humidity of around 50% in the flora, allowing the dragon to get its water from licking dew from the plant life. 5. While these plants are not native to the natural environment of the dragon, this doesn't matter much. Looks amazing! But I question the amount of space left for the dragon with SO much stuff in there. And Megaray UVB mercury vapor bulbs are the only good UVB bulbs with the correct amount of UVB combined with heat. Just saying..
Richard Gibbs so wrong!! Mercury vapor bulbs are horrible. The only uvb bulb tested and proven to provide the correct amount of uvb is the reptisun 10.0 bulb.
Do some research. The Zoo Meds reptisun T5-HO 5.0 and 10.0 are the ONLY good UVB fluorescent bulbs that has optimal levels of UVB. Their T8's are not good. The problem with reptisun's, or any fluorescent bulbs is their UVB degradates very quickly and they offer no heat. The ONLY good UVB mercury vapor bulb is the MegaRay. And it is MUCH better than the reptisun T5 strip bulbs. Better UVB levels that do not degrade quickly and they provide heat. No comparison. Ask yourself, where do reptiles spend most of their time - do they spend most of their time basking under their heat lamp or on the other side of the cage where the fluorescent light is located? They spend most of their time basking, soaking up heat, and therefore it is very important that their basking spot has BOTH heat and UVB. And the only way you can effectively do this is with a mercury vapor bulb, and the only good mercury vapor bulb is the MegaRay. Fluorescent lights offer no heat and are on the other side of the cage, away from the basking heat. Reptiles spend very little time under them. The only real thing fluorescent lights are good for is to light up the other side of the cage.
The Zoo Med Power Sun mercury vapor bulbs are better than their Reptisun fluorescent bulbs, but they still do not produce the required amount of UVB needed. Trust me on the MegaRay mercury vapor bulbs. They are currently the only bulbs with the correct amount of UVB.
I just recently got a beardie and went through so many substrates to different types of carpet, tile, paper towels, newspaper, australian sand and walnut (after I researched and found out it was bad) and even just play sand, and it just didn't look or feel natural for him. I can't wait for my bioactive stuff to come In so I can experiment with it
No you would not. You would want to live somewhere like the Australian outback. This in comparison is a tiny, dark hellhole. Size and light are just a joke for this heliophile sit-and-wait predator.
Matthias there is a reason why animals live longer in captivity. Predators are everywhere in the wild so that’s always a constant fear. Your eggs will most likely get eaten by something so you’ll need to live long enough to mate again to have a chance at continuing your genes. And just a lot of other things that can happen. Honestly if I was a bearded dragon I would prefer to live in captivity and not the wild
Is humidity an issues for the bearded dragon? Seems more like a forest environment rather than a desert, I'm from Vegas and I'd never find fresh soil unless near a lake
This stuff looks like coco fiber basically, which does hold a lot of humidity. I've heard from bioactive users that they'll mix some play sand with it.

the area of australia that they live is very hot and sunny meaning that the sun will avapourate the water. and with too much humidity it can cause respitory infection.
It can, without proper ventilation, for planted bioactive desert tanks, I personally think you should be using a small exhaust fan.. you can also put substrate under a layer of clay, the clay locks in the moisture you can carve little holes for your plants and you can have a watering hole with pvc in it in the corner of the tank to keep the substrate damp under the clay, but the clay will stay dry...
I have a bio dude bioactive setup just like in the video and the humidity stays around 14% with some spikes as high as 36% after watering but it doesnt stay that high for more than a few hours.
thats great i hav a baby beardie i am already considering this for when he fully grown also i was wondering where i could get the substrate and how big that tank is

Wow that's really cool. I want to do this for mybeardy Afghan! I live in Florida though and Dubia roaches are not allowed to be imported so I'd need some thing else that would serve the same purpose..Love the tank with the sliding glass doors too.
Oh my god, that looks absolutely amazing. The opuntia spp. add the perfect touch to an enclosure, giving it that desert vibe. 🌵 Thinking of purchasing one from your webstore for my Western Hognose, would this be a hazard for him since cacti usually have spikes?
Bro you seem very knowledgeable and passionate about what you do. This is my first video I have seen of yours. I look forward to seeing more your stuff!
Hi, I just found your channel. Very informative and impressive. Do you happen to know the scientific name for the elephant feed shrub as I'm curious the species it is
Bursera microphylla is a North American species of tree in the Frankincense Family in the soapwood order. Bursera microphylla, known by the common name elephant tree in English
But the bearded dragon's in the pet trade come from southern Australia where it's slightly dessert and slightly forest the true dessert dwelling dragon is the Northern bearded dragon unfortunately those aren't sold in the pet trade. So 40-50% humidity is required for bearded dragon's found in the pet trade not this 20-36% that everyone keeps saying, the low humidity levels can cause shed to get stuck and it makes more difficult for your dragon to remove the shed
If they have proper rubby items that never happens, our beardie stays at about 10-20‰ humidity and has never had an improper shed, however we made sure his water dish is large enough for him to bathe his entire body in and when he feels like it he will spend his time hanging out in his water dish, but he has never had an improper shed and he is 4 years old now, we got him as a baby
Thanks for the help today with the bearded dragon setup. It’s all good to go and he’s much happier. Will be back to visit you guys soon! Keep it up man!
I have a very important question because I very much would like to do this for my beardie. But I have to know: what do you do for your bearded dragon when they go into brumation? Would the tank explode with over growth with the plants/insects?
It can, you will need to ensure that you maintain it as if he/she was not brumating. Usually it gives your terrarium time to regroup being how destructive they are : )
This is nice man. It has always been in the back of my head to have a self-sustaining terrarium. Like you might as well go as far to hook water and irrigation to it. This is awesome. Love how the bugs are there for them to dig up and plants to snack on. 5 stars brother. Good build
I also my bearded dragon on substrate but personally I wouldn’t put bugs with my bearded dragon but maybe I’ll try it out with some Dubia roaches, this was very informative I really liked it.

Okay so now I'm really regretting getting him a beardie couch 😭 because now i want to do this for him instead? Can you have a beardie couch in a bioactive set up?
How are you planning to keep all the custodians alive ie. springtails and isopods when they need a moist substrate? Arid environment enclosures have different cuc recommended for them.
Hi, Nakkimo - Not all springtails and isopods like it moist. They are found from all over the world...So I use species that like it dry with those setups.
he has some on his website two being the giant white springtails and the large silver springtails. both do fine in the moist middle and bottom layers of the terra sahara. and there are other kinds of springtails that can handle temperate conditions and you can put a tropical mix kind of layer of substrate on the bottom layer for springtails that require a little more moisture. really if you do some research you'll find you have a lot of options.
Very cool and they don't mind the tight space? I've a very large wood/glass custom viv, will be making anther with the sliders to replace the current. Ok so .That last cacti.. you planted, I missed what you said it was,.. Looked like a prickly pear, if so, wouldn't the thorns bother them? I imagine their wild environment is much harsher than captive and I'm learning more every day, just got my first 2 beardies Alduin & bighead, I want to make sure I put nothing dangerous or injurious in there. . mine are About 4 months old right now & their substrate is what they were use to at pet shop and easier to see their prey (reptile grass but mine much cheaper from home depot) only temporary so the relocation doesn't add stress.. I rather be gradual. I would love to plant plants, the munchies, bugs etc.. This I could do now, but is there a particular age you should start them into a more natural environment after being in something very well.. Dull that they were use to as babies? I have wood like yours I've picked over the years ago in my travels, long since cleaned, sat in the sun for wks ,never thought I'd ever use them for pets! I understand there is a lot of conflict with the lighting, uvb etc .. and its really difficult to find a straight answer. Don't want mine too be deprived, I've read enough that the majority is with you so I'll take your word for it. also water dish at a young age? They don't seem to go to it, I mist their basking spot they run to drink and Happy with that as I'm very regular with their feeding etc, nice soaks in tubs, Sorry this is long, have lots of questions but target many than one and not know what to do. mine waved at me and it was love since. I will hook them up lol I'll hit you up with a sub and I'm interested in seeing more, if anything is really cool watching you decorate your vivs. gives many ideas :) thanks for this
@@ΔημητρηςΜονογυιος better without soil? How do you think they live in the wild...? Granted replicating their habitat %100 might not be a GREAT idea, but... They're animals that dig burrows. This is the nicest coolest looking bearded dragon enclosure I’ve come across. Great job Bio Dude.
Wow, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
I just saw you on the show Animal Cribs on Animal Planet. You were helping Antonio with a beardie habitat and it all came out awesome! You seemed knowledgeable so that's what brought me to your channel 😊
Wow I see people who don’t even have soil and I’m just going to say thanks for taking such good care
the glass door sliding along the groove with the substrate made me cringe XD
I hate that sound....
I do too. I purchased a dirt devil (handheld) just for that!
I said the same thing. Haha
ugh wanna try sand.....
@@luannalovell no.
@@luannalovell I wouldn’t post that people will get mad at you but me personally I don’t care just sayin for the future
I got a kit for Christmas! So far I’m loving it!
You actually kept me entertained for 20 minutes. Great video!
So u are a you g prodigy with his own reptile products .Big respect Dude ✊🏾
Thats amazing best bearded dragon bio tank i've ever seen!!
It's a beautiful enclosure, but how is the dragon supposed to move around? There is not an inch of open space in there. My dragon was 18 inches long and would have gotten stuck everywhere lol.
I had a small mint plant in my beardies tank and she managed to get stuck 😂 she was stuck for 20mins before my mom found her 😂😂😂 my mint plant is thoroughly dead
My bearded dragon is at 24 inches and not sure how hed do
He has a video where he later upgraded as the bearded dragon grew
This is so dope! Definitely going to put live plants in my tank!
Have to admit, that tank looks GREAT AND SOOO COOL with all that stuff
Looks really good I think there is too much wood in the vivarium. It takes up a lot of space
iFROST7 I agree
I don't think so. They do like to climb.
Yeah but they like to run about as well. They don't jump from twig to twig.
I have one and trust me it doesn’t move much it mostly likes to sit under the heat lamp
Nicholas Pantelis every bearded dragon is different. Some like to run and clime others like to sit around and be lazy. It just depends on the lizard and the husbandry
Looks to me an abstract bedding very natural, good work. A very good hiding place for bugs.
Just got my kit in the mail! about to set it up! thank you so much man, this is all so awesome. my lil dudes gonna love it.
This is so satisfying to watch
Practical demonstration, easy to understand, and useful information ever!
met josh at the Pasadena convention and man he is a smart and enthusiastic person. his personality alone makes me believe in this product so I'm definitely going to be trying it soon. Keep it up man and you should definitely make a video like this for a Savannah monitor
Thank you, Robert! It was a pleasure to meet you also.
Dude, ur rite. Was wrong to be sarcastic that way. I've continued to watch ur vids as u have developed, and I'm still as u say, here and listening. In fact I commented on how impressed I am on ur latest tour of ur new warehouse. Sometimes humour is lost in this tech age as we can't see expressions that go with. Keep up ur grt work dude. From UK.
Thank you very much.
Thank you for this. I am new to bearded dragons and have fallen in love with mine.
Did you say, "Take it out of it's sleeve meow." At 12:52?
Right Meow?
Is he drinking milk from a saucer?
SuperTroopers.... lol... meow.
The Other Statesman take it out of its sleeve now not meow
Yes I believe he did!
Fantastic set up. Hercules is so cute!
Thank you!
i REALLY want a bioactive setup for my beardie, but holy crap i cant afford those kits, and these setups look amazing keep up the good work!
Thank you!!!!
Just make sure to give them some room. He may have gone a bit overboard. X3
You could DIY it for cheap
It's worth it over the long term. This guy has a corn snake that he hasn't had to replace the soil in 10 years. Imagine how much he's saved as opposed to aspen shavings needing to be changed every week
This is amazing ! I have been inspired to go bioactive with my boy Sonny. Cant wait to get it set up
You should! They love the enrichment it provides. and the dude abides!
I am currently using the PowerSun UVB and he loves it : )
He is always climbing, digging etc. Very active lizard that loves to climb and do his thing. He seems to love all the places to explore and climb.
Dude, you are such a boss. That tank looks so awesome and your monster looks like he's got a lot to look at and explore!
Thank you!!!
I just watch videos like this to relax
I just recently got a beardie and went through so many substrates to different types of carpet, tile, paper towels, newspaper, australian sand and walnut (after I researched and found out it was bad) and even just play sand, and it just didn't look or feel natural for him. I can't wait for my bioactive stuff to come In so I can experiment with it
Let us know how it goes for you once you receive it!
*Dude if I was a Bearded Dragon I would wanna live in your tank!*
Have fun trying to figure out how to turn around.
if i was a bearded dragon i would wanna live in the wild 😊
No you would not. You would want to live somewhere like the Australian outback. This in comparison is a tiny, dark hellhole. Size and light are just a joke for this heliophile sit-and-wait predator.
where you would probably get eaten by a bird or bigger lizard five minutes after you hatched... @@loganlazar8722
I have binge watched so many of your videos. They’re very relaxing.
Thank you!
Elsie Kat the play sand or something similar is probably the ingredient that makes this substrate the “Terra Sahara” for desert dwellers
You put some nice details into the terrarium!
Thanks, Joe!
Great vid and a beautiful tank! Can’t wait to see more bearded dragon vids! 🐉
Freaking AMAZING - we are sold thanks so much! I can’t wait to order and set up! We have chameleons but we are getting a beardie soon!

@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter well darn - the 40g “kit” is sold out along with the isopods, I’ll go with the lesser kit & add in the lighting as well. Thanks :) Reptile show here in SC this weekend so we will be headed there to see what we can find.
Can you do a video on setting up a corn snake terrarium?
Great video! I used to have a Bearded Dragon in high school. I would have loved to know of this back then
It’s beautiful!
My only concern is that there is very little room for them to move around...
Do you have a link to purchase your kit?
I thought that at first too but it’s so much more room than you think! Lol
it's fine, but probably not ideal for an adult bearded dragon long term
Buy a bigger terrarium
the area of australia that they live is very hot and sunny meaning that the sun will avapourate the water. and with too much humidity it can cause respitory infection.
But couldn’t this raise the humidity of the tank and could possibly give the beardy a Respiratory infection course they live in very arid environment
I have a bio dude bioactive setup just like in the video and the humidity stays around 14% with some spikes as high as 36% after watering but it doesnt stay that high for more than a few hours.
the humidity in my tank stays around 30% so its pretty good. the humidity was high the first few days but then leveled out
How is that gunna clean the poop?
Cosmick Roots what?
This is beautiful, I might have to do this for my son’s bearded dragon one day
thank you!!!!! they would love it !

It seems so crowded....
He has plenty of room to move around. It is hard to visualize the depth with the video as you can't see it in front of you. His favorite it the tree on the right!
Hey, I was wondering if the substrate and everything else is safe if digested?
Isaac Stamper
If it's not food then no. It's not safe.
+The Bio Dude Josh Halter I was confused as well haha
BOwens1952 ii
It's really not alot of water lol with any experience in dealing with soils it soaks up a huge amount of water before it becomes soppy this is a great set up!
What an awesome tank!!! Hercules is a very lucky beardie! Would love to do this too. Beautifully done, thank you for sharing!! ♡
Truth First thank you very much
He can't even move in there. >:/
Wow that's really cool. I want to do this for mybeardy Afghan! I live in Florida though and Dubia roaches are not allowed to be imported so I'd need some thing else that would serve the same purpose..Love the tank with the sliding glass doors too.
Hi Elliott. You can use any type of feeder roach to aid in your clean up crew that will be fine in this type of habitat.
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter Thanks!!
Oh my god, that looks absolutely amazing. The opuntia spp. add the perfect touch to an enclosure, giving it that desert vibe. 🌵 Thinking of purchasing one from your webstore for my Western Hognose, would this be a hazard for him since cacti usually have spikes?
Jax lpic The cacti that I sell are genetically engineered and or grown to not have any type of spikes :)
Bro you seem very knowledgeable and passionate about what you do. This is my first video I have seen of yours. I look forward to seeing more your stuff!
Thank you!
So I'm thinking of doing this now. Love it.
No problem 👍 We’re always happy to help!
I have a very important question because I very much would like to do this for my beardie. But I have to know: what do you do for your bearded dragon when they go into brumation? Would the tank explode with over growth with the plants/insects?
It can, you will need to ensure that you maintain it as if he/she was not brumating. Usually it gives your terrarium time to regroup being how destructive they are : )
Awesome!! Thanks so much for letting me know!
This is nice man. It has always been in the back of my head to have a self-sustaining terrarium. Like you might as well go as far to hook water and irrigation to it. This is awesome. Love how the bugs are there for them to dig up and plants to snack on. 5 stars brother. Good build
Appreciate that!
This is amazing! You really did a great job with this, and I gained much new knowledge. Do you ship to Europe?? :)
I also my bearded dragon on substrate but personally I wouldn’t put bugs with my bearded dragon but maybe I’ll try it out with some Dubia roaches, this was very informative I really liked it.
Hey there! the clean up crew are what make the bioactive, bioactive. there are many options for what you can use, though! www.thebiodude.com/blogs/how-do-i-create-a-bioactive-vivarium/what-role-does-a-clean-up-crew-play-in-a-bioactive-terrarium

H-Force5 Gaming dafuq got you so mad?
UnderbossGecko momma pulled his Ethernet cord out his gaming Computer
go check my RUclips channel
Definitely going to get my setup from him. Fellow Texan!
Okay so now I'm really regretting getting him a beardie couch 😭 because now i want to do this for him instead? Can you have a beardie couch in a bioactive set up?
I don't see why not. I think it would be pretty cool.
Amethyst Sky I just made one smh lol
Loving your set up making shore I heard you some of this stuff in your kit
hey the bio Dude josh halter can you make a uromastyx bioactive terrarium
The terrarium really ties the room together.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter can you give me the scientific names of these species?
he has some on his website
two being the giant white springtails and the large silver springtails. both do fine in the moist middle and bottom layers of the terra sahara.
and there are other kinds of springtails that can handle temperate conditions and you can put a tropical mix kind of layer of substrate on the bottom layer for springtails that require a little more moisture. really if you do some research you'll find you have a lot of options.
this is really cool! //just got a kit for Christmas today can't wait to set it up tomorrow, my beardy is going to love it! Thank you bio dude
Bailey Bean, how did it all turn out?
it looks really good my bearded dragon really likes it so does mine and my brothers leopard gecko's
I'm very happy to hear that!!
That’s an awesome set up! My bearded dragons would destroy that bioactive terrarium within a couple days. 😂 Awesome content my dude!
Thank you so much, yeah, all those plants got pretty much eaten, but that is the point : )
I giggled every time you dropped a bag because that’s ME
Glad you were able to laugh a little bit! Thanks for the comment!
At 2:16 Did You Say Meow xD
He said “neow”
I've been doing this for the last 15+ yes for my beardies, uromastyx, varanids, and chameleons adding supers and darkling beetles and meal worms
The plants as well as ferns and grass in my enclosures nice job man
Nice! Bio is GREAT!!
Is it just me or does he sound like hick up from how to train your dragon
They don't seem to go to it, I mist their basking spot they run to drink and Happy with that as I'm very regular with their feeding etc, nice soaks in tubs,
Sorry this is long, have lots of questions but target many than one and not know what to do. mine waved at me and it was love since. I will hook them up lol
I'll hit you up with a sub and I'm interested in seeing more, if anything is really cool watching you decorate your vivs. gives many ideas :) thanks for this
You look stoned lol. What substrate do you grow your weed in?? Haha
JumpmanRick lol. Actually it is just from complete exhaustion :)
Great comeback for such a rude remark that he left you.
JumpmanRick lmao aw.
JumpmanRick ...LMAO...incredible, such an underrated comment
The Bio Dude Josh Halter yes definitely complete "exhaustion" definitely
I have baby bearded dragons and this will be very helpful
Great. Thank you for following!
Talk about cluttered, this setup goes against everything I know about bearded dragons lol
Same, bd's dont need a humid habitat and it's better without soil.
@@ΔημητρηςΜονογυιος better without soil? How do you think they live in the wild...? Granted replicating their habitat %100 might not be a GREAT idea, but... They're animals that dig burrows. I'm sure they've evolved to handle a little soil. Very loose soil and sand is bad, but these big clumpy chunks of dirt wont hurt him lol
Love the video Getting a kit this Christmas
