    Doubt on question 6.
    Picking "enforce" for the second blank makes the sentence: "because public justice such as the kind meted out by a strong, centralised authority .... , is difficult to enforce."
    Based on this, it can be concluded that feuds arise when you adopt a centralised system. SO the correct answer for first blank has to be espouse(meaning: adopt or support)

      But, if you read futher, it says: "it is therefore not surprising that private recourse.... ". This tells us that such societies lack a centralized government. So blank 1 must be lack. As for the 2nd blank, a possible reason for this lack of centralization is required. In the first sentence it says that "feuds between individuals or groups tend to arise in societies" which hints us that consolidating power may be difficult in such societies, hence "enforce"

    got 4/6 , chose confirm instead of reconcile (so reconcile is used for bring together two different things or bringing harmony) and i chose espouse for the last one because of misinterpreting the question statement. However we can simply choose 'lack' to be the answer by eliminating option choices as espouse and affirm end up giving almost similar meaning i.e to support something.

    could you please advise me for best material for sentence equivalent and text completetion? I already studied vocab from several lists and flashcards, and I have limited time to solve SE and TC, I guess I can only do a total of 50 questions before moving to OG, so is manhattan 5lb enough for practise?

    Hey Philip, got the 6th one wrong. isn't the fact that "public justice as the kind metered out by a strong, centralized authority or sophisticated judicial system, is difficult to enforce " would lead to the conclusion that there will be feuds between individuals or groups. The last line too then would logically follow to say that because of the difficulty in enforcement of justice in a centralized government, private recourse is more prevalent. I chose options A, E, H.

    Qn 6 they said "...because public justice such as the kind meted out by a strong, centralized authority or sophisticated judicial system, is difficult to (enforce)."
    Is centralized authority not referring to centralized government? I thought it was, which meant that working backwards, the first blank would have been "espouse".

    • @TheTestedTutor
      @TheTestedTutor  4 года назад +2

      I think the main issue with 'espouse' is that the paragraph is talking about actual events and facts, not feelings and beliefs. So espouse, which means to support, is too weak. Also, logically, why would public justice be difficult to enforce if you have a centralized government? Makes more sense if you lack one...

    • @yongzuogoh5286
      @yongzuogoh5286 4 года назад

      Agreed on the definition of espouse, it definitely wasn't the best word. But i thought it was the only word that is positive in blank (i).
      I guess I've mistaken the 2nd blank. I thought that saying a "centralized authority... difficult to enforce" meant central govt = not good. But it seemed more of having central govt = already bad, which implies that lack of central govt = worse. thus feuds happen.
      My interpretation of central govt = bad led to me picking a positive word for blank (i) lol.

      Because it doesn’t fit the context, a generous particle? It doesn’t mean ‘much efficient’ as it seems, but ‘much efficient to give’ will be the breakdown. Either ways, it does not fit the context.
