  • We shot our most recent short film
    “Ek Hoop Jy weet”
    on both the Canon R5C & the BMPCC 6K Pro. The colour correction was matched as best as possible,
    & the same look was applied to both cameras. An attempt was made at making each
    camera look as good as possible while in keeping
    with the desired look.
    Was graded in DaVinci YRGB Color Managed.
    Our personal findings will be elaborated upon in our upcoming Canon R5C review.

    I prefer the 6k Pro. I dont film with Autofocus, use my Stabelized lenses and use my 2 TB ssd and dont need cf expresscards for 500 bucks. BRAW is very comfortable to edit. No overheating, and half the price. Im very satisfied.😊

      The R5c does NOT overheat bruh. And has way more modes like 8K and 120fps slow-motion RAW 😉

    I think that a lot of the difference may come from using very different quality lense but a very good attempt nevertheless. I prefered the Canon look way more than I expected

      I agree that the Canon looks "prettier" than the BM, but that look may not be the suitable for all types of film.

      Agreed, sigma lenses have a certain sharpness and contrast. Canon lenses, mostly the zooms are some what soft and have a dreamy feel. But it was a close comparison. Good work

  • @ViciousXUSMC

    I would be very happy with the BM for video given its cost. It's a great piece of kit. The R5C price is hard to swallow. But I do think your getting something for the money. Mainly 8K and a great camera for stills photography.
    If you were only doing video, then I think the R5C might be a lot harder to justify. But if you want one camera to do it all the R5C would probably be cheaper than buying two cameras while giving you better quality.
    The R5C is $400 off right now however, so I think that is what I am going to go ahead and get.

    Two things amaze me about this clip
    1. The BM colors and range seem much more crisp, reminds me of the difference between having prints from the 1 hour shop and print from an Agfa Pro Positive film on Giba Chrome. It's deeper, crisper. Although the Canon is a really really good camera for Photo's, I really would buy the Black Magic for Filming.
    2. Second amzing thing, is again how well as a Dutch person I am able to understand the Afrikaans.

    BMPCC 6K = 2500€
    R5C = 5000€
    ... so its clear that if you want to make movies, you need to decide according your budget

    • @dudepersonvids
      @dudepersonvids Год назад

      I would also decide according to the image produced. In this comparison, the Blackmagic has more information retained in bright highlights in the backgrounds and in the shadowy foregrounds. You could roll off the highlights of the Pocket 6K and bring down saturation in the shadows, to match the Canon R5c. But I don't think the Canon R5c has enough information in those areas to bring them to match the Blackmagic.
      If you like the look of the colors and tones of the Canon, that can be achieved in careful color grading of the Blackmagic footage. But not necessarily the other way around.

  • @jasp2003

    Can you explain, why you recorded in HEVC in the R5C and not RAW ? If you wanted to do a true comparison, then you would have recorded in Super35 6k RAW using the same Sigma 18-35 F/1.8 on the R5C.

    • @LoopedPictures
      @LoopedPictures  2 года назад

      This is true. We'll explain fully in our review video. However, the camera was on loan to us from Canon for only 4 days and we weren't able to get a card that was fast enough or a decent external power solution to let us record raw. We're planning on renting it with all the needed accessories in the near future.
      We're also releasing a Canon vs Sony a7SIII video on Monday and the HEVC was a good in between in terms of bitrate to quality ratio that could keep up with both the Sony and the BM

    • @EmeraldAudiovisual
      @EmeraldAudiovisual 2 года назад +1

      Sorry, but that means you didn't do your homework.
      You can record 8k30 (and 6k30) RAW on the internal battery. You only need extra power for 8k60/6k60.
      But you can power the R5C externally with any USB powerbank, that supports USB-C PD and 9V 3A output. Those should be readily available in most electronics stores and if not then on Amazon.
      Using the Sigma on the R5C would also have meant, that you can use a filter adapter, which makes it equivalent to the internal ND filters in the BMPCC 6k Pro.
      And for high fps, you can even do Super16, 2.9k 120fps RAW on the R5C, and only need the internal battery.
      As for the CFExpress B media, I'm puzzled, that if you had the camera on loan from Canon, why the heck they didn't supply you with CFexpress B card with it. But they are easy enough to be got and cheaper than V90 SDcards.
      But I can see, how you have a media issue there, when your regular choices are a BMPCC6k Pro, which takes CFast media and the other choice is a Sony A7SIII, which takes CFexpress A.
      Every other camera manufacturer has gone CFexpress B,

    • @LoopedPictures
      @LoopedPictures  2 года назад +3

      I understand your aguments. However it was literally a case of my contact at Canon calling me the Monday morning to come pick up the afternoon and return on the Friday. We spent 2 days doing tests to try get the raw working, even plugging into different phone and laptop chargers according to the specs. At that stage Canon had been loaning the camera to photographers only and one person cancelled, allowing us a chance to use the camera. The provided CF card was too slow and buying a new one would not have been financially responsible. We also live in South Africa where Amazon prime does not exist and things take days to get delivered. This test was filmed back in April when the camera had only been out for a few months.

    • @EmeraldAudiovisual
      @EmeraldAudiovisual 2 года назад +1

      Fair enough. The slow CFexpress B card is totally on Canon. That's just silly.
      I own the R5C (got it at launch) and a BMPCC 6k (not Pro), so I'm well aware of the capabilities of both. You unfortunately didn't even scratch the surface, what that beast can do. Shame.

    Which among them has better latitude? I know the on-paper specifications of the dynamic range, but from practical usage, how did they compare? R5C has a visible advantage in terms of latitide over 6k pro?

    • @dudepersonvids
      @dudepersonvids Год назад +1

      Just looking at the bright backgrounds and shadowy foregrounds in this comparison, I can see the Blackmagic has a wider usable dynamic range.

    Hmm the 6k is much sharper, simple very mild shadow lift and desaturation and they'd match. You look like you've very mildly over exposed the 6k as well

    its so funny how subjective this stuff is - the bmpcc looks more contrasty, sharp, and less cinematic to me. The canon colors look more natural and pleasant to the eye. So curious how people see the same footage and takeaway such different ideas

  • @pbfilms6356
    @pbfilms6356 2 года назад +1

    Interesting! I think the R5C looks more "cinematic" but that could be that more of the shots have a shallower depth of field and you're shooting full frame. BMPCC looks too sharp IMO. Curious as to why you didn't shoot the R5C in 8K RAW so you could have at least been apples to apples. Since the BMPCC has a 35 mm sensor, you could have shot the R5C in RAW, used the 35mm sensor mode which crops down to 6K. I would have loved to have seen a side by side with both cameras capturing 6K.

    • @LoopedPictures
      @LoopedPictures  2 года назад +1

      Could be! We did want to shoot 8k RAW, but the camera was loaned to us by Canon for only 4 days and the CF card was not fast enough. We also couldn't get the correct cable to use our V-Lock batteries for the external power it needs. Definitely worth renting again to test
