The R5 C does offer a horizon level, it can be enabled in the display output settings.
The Canon EOS R5 C features some very compelling advantages for video shooters over the R5, but is it enough to impress the pros? We brought in professional cinematographer and Jordan's twin brother, Gordon Drake to see how the R5 C stacks up.

I have a theory. Gordon is not only a great cinematographer, but an actor too. And he doesn’t have a twin brother, Jordan. It’s Gordon playing Jordan in all episodes. He’s been fooling us for years. What a genius!
Puppet alter-egos, evil twins, what's next? How about American versions of Chris and Jordan who say "Zee" instead of "Zed?"
And they eat McDonald's during reviews.
@@falxonPSN There are more than 1,400 McDonald's locations in Canada.

"Zee"? That's a bridge too far!
Love the un-bleeped F-bomb around 45 seconds in, and then the bleeped S-bomb 15 seconds later.

@@Mark_Sodapopinski same lol
Given the recently announced demise of DPReview. I think this unbleeped F-bomb might not be accidental.
Finally!! An actual professional who knows how to navigate around a cinema camera and can break down cinema aspects of a camera. Thanks Gordon for giving up your time away from the industry to help out this channel.

I believe the R5C does have a horizon level in video mode. It’s actually awesome! It’s pretty hidden in the settings so I don’t blame you for not finding it. Cheers!
Because he wears shades the whole time i dont blame him for not finding it… cheers 😂
For those wondering, it's the monitoring setup, go to the 5th tab , custom display 1 , look for level
I actually don't like it.. I always read it backwards, but yes it does exist!
Came here to say this. It works great.
4:46 - Dutch Angle! Gordon clearly is a true cinematographer!
Wow, I can't believe you got Hollywood superstar Gordon Drake back in your pityful internet show 😍
Not without paying him $2 million dollars to make his important 12 minute appearance.

I've owned the R5C since the day it came out, it's a great camera! Here's a few remarks about your review:
- It does have a horizon level! I have it enabled all the time. Lol
- In RAW I get about an hour of battery life, not 30 minutes. Still not great, but if I need a lot of battery runtime I will plug in a 20000 mah 65W pd usb power bank and get about 7 hours this way. The non RAW formats will cut that time in half though, so shoot in RAW if you have the storage for it.
- Super16 doesn't do 4K, but 3K only. So no 4K120 in RAW. The 4K120 fps quality is visibly worse compared to lower fps, so that's a bummer.
Gordon's take on some Photojournalists and Pulitzer Prize is actually much more spot on that you guys think... ayy lmao
I know I'm super late to the party, but I just placed my order for this camera yesterday. Can't wait.
4:44 correction. The R5C does have a horizon level!
So much current technology and I still have my old Canon EOS 77D. 😮💨
Hey man, if it works it works - you can take beautiful pictures with that thing! 👍
Canon T5i for me. Still takes excellent pictures and it's in focus 80% of the time.
@@Simalacrum I no longer use it for photos but for videos.
Love the introduction. Hillarious.
"leave your opinions, if they line up with mine they are definitely appreciated...." lol
It worth noting, that with the latest firmware the R5 nearly never overheats. Even 4k120 works very good. Also there is no AF Tracking in 4k120 in the R5C. So overall I found the the 4k120 mode in the R5 more usable for my work. (Though its sharper in the R5c). Overall I send my R5C back because the battery live was SO annoyingly bad. Note, when Gordan says "you get maybe half an hour working time" he means actual time the camera is just ON. Not recording. Just on. If you set up your shot, it can easily happens that you kill the first battery, just while setting up your light... In most record modes I got less than 24 minutes of recording out of a full battery.... 4k60 is especialy bad, which happens to be a mode I need mostly...
The R5C battery life is tied to frame rate and codec, rather than resolution. 8K 24p raw gets the best battery life at 45min per battery. The 60p 4K XF-AVC eats the battery the quickest. I'm often recording 4K 24p HEVC and it get's about 40min and it's solid.
I also find it funny how the narrative has flipped on C-Log 3. When it first came out, everyone was praising it for being easier to grade than C-Log 2, but now everyone complains that C-Log 3 doesn't have enough dynamic range. So funny. It's a perfectly good curve, just need to know how to expose for it.
Welcome back Gordon! Tell Michael Bay we said hi!
Thanks for the review. Probably not for my type of shooting. The FX3 is looking much better in comparison to what I want to do.
informative 12min review on the R5C.
I think this is going to be my favorite video from you guys, it is brilliant and super funny, keep up with the awesome content and please bring that puppet back for future reviews 👌👏👍
0:40 I love it when youtube channels forget to bleep a bad word
Thanks, guys!!
This is my Saturday Night Live
Loved the humour in this one and nice to see the R5c footage while Gordon is ranting. Once correction, the R5 doesn't overheat in 4K HQ if you're shooting with firmware 1,6 or later up to 96F. I tested up to 80F and the Deaf Director tested up to 96 in the Texas heat.
This was presented with the smoothness of a person with sniper's hands doing surgery👌
Forget the content, love the video :)
Need more bootcamp videos too
The twins are always more amusing than Chris doing his thing alone. You sure Chris doesn’t have a twin too? Christine? 😂
Gordon is the video side, and Jordan is the photo side. Genius, guys.
Jordan is also the video side.
Great review and liking your “graded” to “ungraded “footage for an easy decision when purchasing a new camera as some of us don’t like dealing or don’t have time with post processing.
I owned the R5C for almost a year and sold it. It just has too many quirks and tons of broken features. Quirks wise the horrible autofocus especially in low light, 30 min battery life that drops down to as low as 20 min when the battery wears with use over a few months, and the lack of any competent stabilization makes it almost useless to a run and gun shooter. In low light the autofocus would lose it's mind and even show a focus lock on something that was out of focus so even the human only AF would "lock" but it was slightly out of focus. You can't even switch over to manual focus because the manual focus modes are completely broken... Peaking does not work half of the time and has a bunch of different colors some of which don't even show up. And the manual focus assist which is based on the horrible AF gives you false readings because the camera has false focus locks all the time... So you can't even manually focus reliably without an external monitor. The Digital IS ruins shots... Its super choppy. And then the fact that it doesn't have CLOG2 is ridiculous. It's very obvious working with the RAW that you lose a lot of dynamic range because of the CLOG3. You can stretch so much more out of the footage in RAW so it's very obvious that it could support CLOG2.
Dang, 😮
Sounds like a lot of user error and misunderstanding of the camera.
The reason it doesn't "have" clog2 is because of the sensor it uses. You can slap clog2 on it in post if you want, but the sensor is not made for that and will just bring out a bunch of noise in the shadows.
Shoot in RAW for double the battery life. The main appeal of this camera is internal 8K RAW. I don't know what's the point of getting this camera if you're not going to use this main feature?
Digital IS works great! You just can't use it in RAW, so it's a trade off. Together with a lens IS the image is very stable. If it's choppy for you, then you're obviously using it wrong. The in body stabilization such as on R5 is the one that's useless, because of the wobble at edges.
Mirrorless cameras aren't great focusing in low light in general. My old 5DIII would focus better in low light. Blame it on mirrorless technology.
I'm not sure what you mean by "can't switch to manual focus", because it's very easy to switch, simply flip the lens to MF from AF. If you're talking about Continuous AF, then no real videographer uses it - turn it off, the camera isn't smart enough to figure out when to focus and on what. It's upto you to tell it that. It will focus very well otherwise.
@@vitaminb4869 All Sony Cameras have Sony's equivalent to Clog2 even the little 1 inch sensor vloging cameras like the ZV1. There's no reason not to have Clog2 it's just a limitation Canon places on the camera to sell you a more expensive one. As far as the stabilization try doing some follow shots and you will see the digital IS fight you and make the frame jump. If you are just trying to get a steady static shot it's fine but not for any type of handheld camera movement. You misunderstood completely about the manual focus.... Every manual focus assist in the R5C is broken. Sure you can switch it to manual focus but the things that tell you if the image is in focus or not when you are manually focusing aren't reliable and give you false readings. The focus peaking is bugged and doesn't work at all with some of the color settings and you have to make adjustments to the gain for every single exposure change and even then it's almost impossible to get consistency. Then the manual focus assist that turns on when you switch a RF native lens to manual focus is unreliable and doesn't get accurate readings so many times it confirms you have the right manual focus but it's not accurate and the shot is slightly out of focus. And then lastly the no videographer uses autofocus is BS what if you are flying a camera on a gimbal or filming yourself? There are tons of uses for autofocus. The Sony cameras I switched to from the R5C autofocus great, they almost never miss focus even in low light. For most things with Sony's excellent AF theres really no need to manually focus anymore. I'm starting to let the camera do it's thing more and more. Once you switch to Sony you realize how much of a joke Canon has become.
@@NickDelDuca Apparently Sony's equivalent is not equivalent enough. You need 16 stops of dynamic range to utilize clog2. With less all you gonna be doing is bringing out all the noise in the shadows. Nothing is preventing you to have clog2 with R5C if you're so inclined, but it won't be making your footage any better - it'll actually make it worse.
You want to do "follow" shots with IBIS? How is this better? Use the appropriate tool for that. Normal camera movement you can do just fine with digital IS. Maybe you have exceptionally shaky hands, who knows.
You're a Sony fanboy, so what can I say. You want a camera that you turn on and it does everything for you, no matter how good or bad it is. If you want the best possible footage and operate a camera yourself, then you turn off continuous AF, and AF it when and where you need it. I just can't imagine let the camera run continuous AF when there is things moving around all the time, and going in and out of the frame. Good luck. And if nothing is moving around, then you likely don't need continuous AF.
@@vitaminb4869 You sound like me about 6 months ago before I actually tried a newer Sony camera and realized how much better they were. I was a hard core Canon defender and I shot Canon for over 10 years. I used all the same points as you to defend Canon... then I realized it was all cope and Canon was an anti consumer money hungry company that didn't support creators. Sony cameras hold autofocus, they don't pulse, they don't second guess. With the Sony body I have you can take a picture of someone's face and it set it to only autofocus to that person. It can literally track a single subject through a crowd of people. It can almost always autofocus better than you can manually focus. When you keep getting beat by the AF system you tend to use it and rely on it more and more. I have no problem with manual focus though... Been doing it for a long time. The problem with the R5C was that the manual focus assist tools didn't work. As far as IBIS goes Sony's IBIS can be left on because it doesn't do anything weird. It doesn't wobble or warp or cause the frame to jump if you try to track a subject like the R5C's digital IS does. It's completely un intrusive.
I thought it was going to be Gordon Laing. TBH I'm a little disappointed.
This video convinced me to buy the LUMIX S5II, which has many of the same video-centric features…and cost a lot less.
great review i alway's love the in depth small things. i do not understand why canon have like a face only AF that won't skip to the background in the R5c but not in the normal R5. also the thing about the horizon level. they seem so small to fix but yet they are like this
More Gordon! We love Jordan too, but Gordon is a "Maestro"
Down here in the lower 48 we really like Gordon. Something about him… Moar Gordon!
Where are the double thumbs up? That was awesome! One of your best in a while. Jordan’s twin brother sure is arrogant.
I am using canon R5C for almost 6 months now, and only major problems that I am facing is battery issue. Battery life is so short we need at least 10 batteries for a full day shoot. If you can use a usb power delivery R5c is the best❤
Yeah, I don't use internal batteries if I'm gonna film for a long time. Power bank is easy enough to carry and plug it into the camera. Then I don't have to worry about battery life for entire day.
@@vitaminb4869 can you tell me which is the power bank that you are using? The power banks that I have tested are not working.
@@nivedmurali8523 You need one that is a PD power bank. It needs to output enough watts, I believe you want at least 40w. I have one that is 20w PD and it doesn't work. I'm using a Veektomx 65w PD bank, from Amazon, and that one works. Charges the internal battery too, when plugged into the camera. There is also a way to plug the camera into normal power outlet at home, you can either use a laptop charger or buy a PD charger. That way the camera will run forever. It won't damage the camera, so don't worry.
@@vitaminb4869 thank you
does it have autofocus on 120fps 4k? thank you
oh I would kill for a video where Jordan and Gordon compete in their vidoegraphy skills.
I'm hoping and praying for an episode with puppet Gordon, too. That would be EGOT worthy. (All right, maybe not...)
Chris has cartoon rabbit ears in that opening shot.
would be cool if canon made a cheaper APSC variant, maybe an R7C.

Didn't they fix the R5 over heating with the last firmware update ?
Not fixed, but better. Still wouldn’t trust it on a professional shoot. Especially during the summers.
How can I follow Gordan on socials?
Cool 😎 👍👍👍

F-bomb: pass S-bomb: declined
When is Chris' twin brother coming on the show?
Chris doesn't have a twin brother, but he does have a twin sister - Christina. She really doesn't get the digital photography thing and prefers shooting large format film and where possible she ties this up with her other passion which isn't fishing but macrame. Fascinating woman.
When I grow up I want to be Gordon
Jordan, don’t give up your day job! If DPR doesn’t work out, you should go on the road doing stand up! I’d sell some camera gear to attend. Keep up the questionable work and keep the Chin balloons in Canada. Thanks. 12:23 12:23
