    • @erika4773

The books she mentions are appropriate for people of any age, as long as they can read. I think most of them teach only in Finnish, and start with fairly simple concepts and words. As long as you are interested and can consistently study it, you can learn it!

    Hi there
I'm new to Finland, I'm living in Espoo. I speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and English and I'm from US. Would you be kind to be my Finnish language partner ? I really want to learn the Finnish language in order to attend Medical school in Finland. I'm learning Finnish online for about 1.5 month now, and of course I know very little. I will greatly appreciate your help !!!!

      She mentioned:
      Suomen Mestari 1 : www.suomalainen.com/products/suomen-mestari-1-uud
      Suomi Sujuvaksi 1 : www.suomalainen.com/products/suomi-sujuvaksi-1
Hyvin Menee! 1 (She said she hasn't used that one) : www.suomalainen.com/products/hyvin-menee-1
Some other books that I find very useful are Marja-Liisa Saunelas "Harjoitus tekee mestarin" series. It is a series of 4 practice books that are particularly made for foreigners to study for the YKI test intermiediate level. The first 3 books focus on different grammar aspects of the language, and the 4th book has many reading-writing questions that are similar to the style of the YKI exam. The link to the suomalainen.com page of book 1: www.suomalainen.com/products/harjoitus-tekee-mestarin-1 . The answers to the first 3 books can be found online :)

Hi How to apply for the exam? And How to apply on university of Helsinki ?

    • @erika4773
      @erika4773 3 года назад +1

This is a late answer, but you apply to the YKI exam here: www.oph.fi/en/education-and-qualifications/register-national-language-proficiency-test-yki . This link has information about the different levels and the link that says " Register for the Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI)" takes you to the actual registration page. You can see the dates and places of the exams on that page as well.
University applications happen through studyinfo.fi. There you can see all the programs you can apply to, and can find link for requirements and further information. When the applications are open (the application period is also given in the site, also the universities' website) you will have an option to make an application. You fill in the schools/programs you want to apply to in the application page, you can apply to max. 6 schools per application period. (There are 2-3 application periods a year).
Almost all web pages have an English version, you can find an option to change them from "suomeksi" to "in english" in some corner of the page :)

    Short answer: you can't.
There is no royal road to geometry, neither is there any to Finnish.
I am from China and I have learned Finnish for 16 months.
But I still don't know sh!t and I believe plenty of people are just like me.

I think if you study Finnish full time with efficient and suitable methods, you can actually. To me the right mindset is important, if you think you can, you can do it, it may not bring you to the perfect results, but you'll improve significantly, this is not to tell you to stop learning after 8 months, but to give you motivation and inspiration that Finnish is possible to learn with the right attitude and methods. I have heard so many times from the Finnish language learners that Finnish is so difficult and it is the most difficult language in the world, I think this kind of mindset will turn you down in the very first step of the language learning, actually this apply to learning new things in general:) I speak Chinese, English, Finnish, Spanish so far, I can't say my language skills are perfect, but this is not my aim, my aim is to use the new language as a tool to explore the real local culture, to understand people and to enjoy life, once you learned a new language, it really opens a door for you to a brand new world, to me it really likes magic^_^

Thanks for the comments, my Finnish is not fluent at work, I consider it basically fluent in daily life. So I don't see a problem to understand or speak and read in my daily life. There are for sure more room to improve. But actually you point out a key to learn a foreign language is to avoid to be perfectionist. When learning a foreign language (in my case, Finnish,English and Spanish), I never think that I don't speak fluently, this is so embarrassing, etc. Instead, I enjoyed noticing that my language is improving everyday, understanding more opens a new window for more access to local culture and information. As a non-native speaker, I am proud of myself speaking a foreign language fluently in daily basis in a relatively short time, which is a motivation to continue learning this language and more other foreign languages. I'm sure those who is learning new languages will understand and hope this tips would inspire and encourage those new language learners.
