The thing I love about this video is that Raul is speaking Finnish and that he is telling us about his wonderful journey in the target language. There are so many videos on RUclips where self-proclaimed 'polyglots' or bilinguals talk about how they learned a particular language, but the videos are always in their mother tongue (English, French etc.). In fact, there are some people who claim to be polyglots and they have dozens of videos about how to learn the languages that they have learned, but you will never see them speak the target language, except maybe for a few memorized sentences in one or two videos. It is hard for me to take what they are saying seriously. One exception is Steve Kaufmann, who has several videos in which he is speaking different languages impromptu. That is the kind of person I would want to listen to. I can sit here and claim that I speak 20 languages and pontificate for hours on how you can become a successful 'polyglot' like me, but if I never speak any of the 20 languages in front of you, I will come across as nothing more than a braggart. Hey Aleksi, nice videos man. I'm an American in Finland with a very similar story to Raul's. I thought about messaging you actually for an interview but I'm not that brave yet if you said yes :) I have been told I speak Finnish quite well for a foreigner and I am close to the level of where Raul is but not quite yet, after studying/practicing/speaking Finnish for 3 years. For most, Finnish takes a lot of work to read, write, understand and speak so many give up, I have had to invest a lot of my personal time and effort to learn it, a lot of self-motivation and courage, it's become a lifestyle goal like changing your diet or something instead of just a hobby that lasts for a season or so (you don't learn Finnish, Finnish learns you!), I have felt like I have failing miserably at it all the time, but it is amazing to finally start to understand it a lot and speak it decently, for me at least it really does feel like a super power because I'm not a super student and never in my life thought I would learn another language fluently, especially Finnish.
I am really really impressed with this guy. I speak two languages fluently (not Finnish though) and maybe the basics of three others. I think it is impressive to speak this well and understand a complete unknown language as well as this guy does in less than a year.
When this video was filmed, he already had been speaking for five years, so back then he wasn't as good as now, but he still could say that he could speak and understand Finnish.
Moi! I just started learning Finnish (for fun) and I can't say a lot at this stage (puhun vain vähän suomea!). But this video is so motivating! Well done Raul and thanks Aleksi for encouraging people to learn Finnish. I hope to visit Finland one day and practice the language skills :)
Motivational video !! Haha im from morocco and i start learning Finnish one year ago and Then i give up .. but this video make me to Motivated to open my Finnish book again ... thääänks for this video
Aleksi, thanks for being one of the people who helps Raúl by speaking Finnish with him! :) I agree with him that this is indeed one of the biggest challenges nowadays of learning a language - getting your friends to speak it with you, instead of English (especially for me, as a native speaker of English). I don't speak Finnish yet, but I experienced this difficulty with Polish and German. Sometimes I even got angry with friends for always speaking English to me. I am curious how the language dynamic evolved between Raúl and his wife. Does she speak Spanish? Or did they start off in English? Do they speak Finnish now, and did she help him? Was it difficult for him to convince her to begin speaking Finnish with him?
My parents are Finnish, and I’ve spoken Finnish at home since I was a baby. I’m an adult now and he already speaks significantly better than I do! I can’t lie I’m a little jealous and want to improve my speech. I really need to find a course that would help with that

God Bless You!!!
Raul's first bit was so much like a true Finn... 0:28 Then again at 0:38, typical of many Finns when explaining something. He has great pronunciation and he has really grasped the language in a short time!
He speaks unbelievable perfect Finnish. BTW i'm likely not the only thinking that Spanish is one of the most beautiful languages. And there is some truth of claim that German is very logical.
I think that the finnish people feel like it's much more courteous to speak english than finnish. That foreigner might feel embarrassed because of the the mistakes that are about to happen and because of it, the english is better because it's neutral (both makes mistakes) or that only the finnish makes the mistakes. In a sense, they are trying to save pro-actively the foreigners from embarrassment, not realizing they are making things worse. Also one big reason is, for some finnish, that they so rarely get the chance to speak english that they also would like to have the chance to practice. However, that being said, no finnish is going to decline if asked to speak finnish. It's just the first assumption about what the common language will be and if asked, they will all accommodate.
Mexican native language (Nahuatl) and Suomi are similar phonologically and gramatically. Both don't pronounce consonant b,d,g except for loanwords and both are agglunative. Old brotherhood of Siberian people, Uralic and Aztec. Hopefully, Mexican could revive Nahuatl as official language of Mexico as Finnish could revive Suomi after they used Swedish as their official language 300 years ago.
B,d,g are all pronoinced in finnish. And the ones using swedish back then were only small minority with power whilst the normal finns used finnish and couldn't speak a word in swedish
@@eldakka2163 Spoken Finnish used not to have those letters pronounced, even some decades ago people did not pronounce them. Many words including those letters were borrowed from other languages (e.g.banaani, digitaalinen, gerbiili).
Wow! I'm impressed. Good going, Raul! Es un milagro! I have been to Helsinki and I speak German, but Finnish was very foreign. I likened it to Swedish and Norwegian

Thanks for this video Alex . It gives me the impetus to know i can also learn the language fast though it can be quite frustrating particularly the grammar. Currently at the language school in Espoo.

hahaha....the partitive plural is Hard!!! For me, it is one of the most difficult parts of Finnish! I am so surprised that Aleksi is so surprised at that . I guess we can't see through our own language. I am a native English speaker and had NO IDEA how messed up English spelling was until my kid was learning to spell. I guess I blocked out the trauma.😅
Finnish language have so much similar words with lithuanian , many of them were taken so i think it will be not that bad for me to learn it but grammar , i think i will cry :D
Me too i studied finnish at TE. The difficult part about finnish is the formal and colloquial forms. As we study the formal form it is difficult for us to understand the colloquial form because as students we are use to the formal form. The translation doesnt fit with what they are saying on some parts. 😁
As an English and German speaker, I cannot comprehend how good his finnish is. Could someone point out to me his level of fluency, and predict his fluency 'trajectory' (which leads to my question). Using him as a point of reference - could it be possible to sound borderline native?
I just arrived here in August, I'm working in an english daycare so remarkably that has helped me with random Finnish phrases so I can speak to the children (who mainly speak Finnish). I'm going to start the TE integration courses in January. I'm Mexican-American so I also speak fluent Spanish alongside fluent English. I'm also here due to my husband being Finnish. Shoutout to Raul! I hope I can get a grip on the Finnish language :)

not much man. Just same old, same old. Missing my finnish brother so thought I would catch up on your channel. How is life?
Oohh nice video👍🏼 I'm motivated to open my Finnish textbook again :D
Good Thanks and good luck Pön!
Moving to Helsinki in a few months. i'll watch this video again in 1 year and see if I can catch something! Onnittelut / Enhorabuena Raúl! Ja kiitos Aleksi for this great channel.
Thanks for the comment Michaël Lejeune!
Raul puhuu hyvin puhdasta ja kaunista suomea. Hieno homma! Nostan hattua, kuten sanotaan.
Kiitti kommentista Alec Hänninen!
Hyvää sisältöä ja kiitos Raul.

¡Berlanga! Muchas felicidades carnal. I'm so proud of you my dear friend! Salúdame a Sanna y a tu bebé (el pequeño "Matías Jesús") jajajajaja. 👏✌️
Onnea
Thanks for the comment!
Kiitti kommentista! ^^
The video was perfect and enjoyable for any student interested to learn Finnish language.
Moi! I just started learning Finnish (for fun) and I can't say a lot at this stage (puhun vain vähän suomea!). But this video is so motivating! Well done Raul and thanks Aleksi for encouraging people to learn Finnish. I hope to visit Finland one day and practice the language skills :)
Woow! This guy is awesome, sounds so good! Good job!
I agree!
Motivational video !! Haha im from morocco and i start learning Finnish one year ago and Then i give up .. but this video make me to Motivated to open my Finnish book again ... thääänks for this video
Thanks for the comment and good luck learning Finnish!
Noureddine tvpranks no mitä osaat suomeksi?
Jatka samaan malliin!
Kiitti hienosta kommentista!
Was it difficult for him to convince her to begin speaking Finnish with him?
he's such a role model, wow!😍
Raul is remarkably talented in languages!
My parents are Finnish, and I’ve spoken Finnish at home since I was a baby. I’m an adult now and he already speaks significantly better than I do! I can’t lie I’m a little jealous and want to improve my speech. I really need to find a course that would help with that
If you want to improve your speaking skills, you need to speak with someone. I recommend inexpensive 1-on-1 lessons on Italki aleksihimself.com/italki
Raul's got lots of neurons firing. One smart dude. Sounds like my late grandfather - fully cultured Wirkkala.
hei Aleksi, kiitos kaikki sun videoista. mä halun muutta Suomen ja opiskella Turussa. olen puoli suomalainen mutta en voinu saada kansalaisuuta. olen tutkinut paljon mutta on vielä pari kysymystä . jos voidaamme puhu sähköpostin kautta se ois mahtava. anteeks, mä ymmärrän että kaikki youtuberit saa tälaisia kommentit aina, mut olisin uskomattoman kiitollinen jos mä voisin kysy experttista neuvoja. tuhansia kiitoksia ja paljon onnea
Moi Erik ja kiitti kommentista! Joo kysy ihmeessä. Löydät mun yhteystiedot tuosta "tietoja"-osiosta. :)
I'm Very Happy For Raul, He Learned Finnish, I'm So Happy, Many Congratulations, Even I'm Trying To Learn Finnish, But I'm Speaking Spanish, English, Oh Yeah, I Learned Italian!!!, Thank You For Sharing Raul's Experience In Finland, He Speaks Very Well, I Got Shocked For That, Well Greetings From Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico!!!, Thank You Aleksi!!! God Bless You!!!
Thanks for the comment and good luck learning Finnish!
Ei vitsi että Raul puhuu hyvin suomea!
Kiitti kommentista! Oon samaa mieltä. 😀
So nice to see a Mexican fellow mastering one of the most difficult languages in the world 😁.
Good stuff!
Raul's first bit was so much like a true Finn... 0:28 Then again at 0:38, typical of many Finns when explaining something.
He has great pronunciation and he has really grasped the language in a short time!
Thanks for the comment! He indeed has!
He speaks unbelievable perfect Finnish. BTW i'm likely not the only thinking that Spanish is one of the most beautiful languages. And there is some truth of claim that German is very logical.
Thanks for the comment! German is quite logical (I can speak it) and want to pick up Spanish at some point.
rispektit 👍
Kiitti kommentista! ^^
Mitä helkaa
Even Raul's accent is perfect! Well done! Minä asun Kanadassa ja haluan opiskella suomea parempi :)
Kiitos kommentista Robert!

Paremmin😈
This gives me hope ^_^ I'm moving to Finland in 6 months and have been learning the basics of Finnish on my own... SO frustrating! :D
Start practicing with Finns. You will get good fast if you do that.
Saludos!
My mind is blown :D I wish I could say stuff in Finnish 😳
All it takes is time & practice!
Say perkele correct you get a dime ;)
Dragon Wiener I don’t know how to roll my r like that unless I’m freezing my ass off
Satana perkele and vittu - 99 % of Finnish is learnt.

Raúl congrats to talk finnish well ya represents all latines talking this Hard, exotic and rich, pretty idiom.🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻👍👍👍
Thanks for this Video Aleksi, you are awesome, polite and funny.
Greetings from Hamburg.
Vielen Dank!
Your videos are very helpful to und try Finnish culture and its people. Thanks a lot and keep making videos. I love them all.
That's great! More videos on the way and newest one coming out today!
I gotta say agree, but Finns have to be persistently asked in order to get them to speak Finnish, some times on each encounter. :D
Thanks for the comment domar lolodi!
The guy of the video most certainly doesn't speak any Nahuatl.
@@davidk5954 Of course he doesn't speak anything of Nahuatl
Thanks for the comment! Finnish is much different from the rest of the European languages as it comes from a different language family.
Kaveri puhuu aivan loistavaa Suomea. Hatunnoston arvoinen suoritus. Hienoa :)
Kiitti kommentista! ^^
Pris Sauvage you can check my video about WordDive. You can start learning Finnish at home. ;)
Raul on kyllä yllättävän taitava puhuja! Propsit hänelle 😎
Samaa mieltä!
Wow, great how het speaks it do well. I try to speak it for a couple of years now, cause it sounds great. Puhun suomea nyt, mutta, se on vähän. Minulla on vähän aika opettelen Soumea tällä hetkellä. In a couple of years i will visit Finland, hope i get to learn a bit faster then...
Thanks for the comment! Tsemppiä suomen kielen kanssa!
Wow, his pronounciation is excellent.
Indeed!
Suomen kielen opiskelija täällä. Thank you for the idea, now I need to tell my friends to speak finnish with me too😅
Helvetin hyvää suomea kyllä. Ei voi muuta sanoa. Varsinki tongue twisterit ku kaikki noi oli yhdyssanoja ja suorilta löysi yksittäiset sanat sieltä. Aivan mahtavaa. :D
Kiitti kommentista!
I want to clarify that in te-office only lets you do the courses if less than 3 years ago that you live in filandia and it does not matter if you have been working before and did not have the time to study that are intensive courses of many hours
Alright so new people can take this then.
Siis Raul puhuu ihan sika sujuvasti suomea! 😃👏👏
Niin tekee!
Vitun hyvä äijä Raul!
Jep!
Great interview!
Thanks for this video Alex . It gives me the impetus to know i can also learn the language fast though it can be quite frustrating particularly the grammar. Currently at the language school in Espoo.
Thanks for the feedback and keep on learning!
Basic rule, use that language, no mater how well u speak or read...
Do not use your any other language, if not need.
Read more and more. Read loud also.
Respect all who speak finnish.
Good tips!
The Method is Called Uuno TURHAPURO ! Uuno Finally Gets a Job at Spains / Costa Del Sol - and Need to know Spanish ! He STARTS - to forget ( loose on purpose ) His FIRST LANGUAGE ! Finish its, now in few moments i was heard finnish podcast, focus on phonetics, in phonetical way, aspect remenbers a little spanish, basco, navarro, little paused, slowly and when finnish is spoken fast remenbers karelian, veps, jurchen and tocharian in many times.
Ive heard quenya too its based on finnish, its a tonal semi tonal idiom in a volume moderated. Finnic uralic idiom in fact.
I'm mexican and this is awesome 😨 finnish sounds super hard to speak.
Great video🙌
Thanks for the comment Paola Solano!
I'm finnish and came to watch this for fun, but it gave me hope in learning french, that I might be fluent with good pronounciation someday
Good stuff!
Very cool. My wife is Suomi. I am learning slowly but good
Good stuff!
Your vieos are always awesome Alexsi, I think I'm always switching between you and 4 others as they stop me getting so bored. I need to find some finnish penpals, you can only pick up so much from google translate. Finnish sounds Italian to me with some of the words
Thanks for the comment Road Runner!
Mahtavaa!
Also my Italian friend learned fluent Finnish in one year.. you can do it if you are motivated.
A true hero.
hahaha....the partitive plural is Hard!!!
After having taught Finnish, I do understand why people struggle with it. 😁
That is fast for learning any language well. Wow!
I hope it gives some motivation for you. ;)
Congrats Raul. I'm still stuck in suomen kieli😯
Keep learning, keep learning smarter and don't give up.
Amazing
great video, cheers :)
Thanks for the comment electrorganix!
His English is very fluent. Has a bit of an accent but that's not a problem.
Pakko myöntää, Raul on yksi parhaimpia suomea puhuvia ulkomaalaisia
Kyllä!
Raul kirjaimellisesti sano noita kieli juttuja paremmin ku minä välillä
Raul literally said some of those tongue twisters better than me
Herranen aika ku äijähä puhuu kuin mikäki suomalainen, tosi isot propsit hälle, ei ees kuulu aksenttia puheessa :o
Tarpeeks ku treeenaa vaan. :P
Raúl, estoy estupefacta 😍
I just arrived here in August, I'm working in an english daycare so remarkably that has helped me with random Finnish phrases so I can speak to the children (who mainly speak Finnish). I'm going to start the TE integration courses in January.
I'm Mexican-American so I also speak fluent Spanish alongside fluent English.
I'm also here due to my husband being Finnish.
Shoutout to Raul! I hope I can get a grip on the Finnish language :)
That's great! I hope you settle in to Finland and good luck learning Finnish!
Mahtavaa
^^
This is insane, no idea how anyone can get this native-like in Finnish. Probably one of about 10 people in the world 😂
Well he lived in Finland already so he got to practice it daily. He probally also tried to speak as much Finnish with his wife since she’s from there.
@@KawaiiCat2 still, it's the same with other really hard languages like japanese. i know many who lived in japan for years and most can't do basic daily convo. it's just really difficult

Should have the subtitles as optional (because you can to that). I heard good Finnish with a non usual cadence. The text really distracted from everything. Kudos to him for learning the language!
I like to do the subtitles in the editing cos it's easier than using the RUclips tool. Just ignore the text if it bothers you. :)
I tried to! ;)
I'm a Finn who moved to Canada as a boy. His Finnish is better than mine. I can't detect an accent in Raul's Finnish and he sure can roll those "rrrrr"'s. El perrito.
Thanks for the comment Valley Dog!
I am deaf. I am Mexican-American ( USA) . I tried to learn Finnish but it was too complicated! I started to learn Finland Sign Language (FSL). I wanna go to Finland because I hope I can find deaf finnish friends someday.
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately all my videos are not subtitled at the moment, but I still wish you good luck learning Finnish. :)
Hey, I am not kidding you. I have a new technology subtitled on your video! I can understand to translate Finnish into English subtitle. It was very interesting about your interview friend from Mexico. That's so cool!
Wow that's great!
