It's because there wasn't a 9 year propaganda campaign against Finland, even though Finland immediately applied to join NATO and is probably one of the most "Russophobic" countries in Europe alongside Eastern European nations. It shows you just how powerful the information warfare campaign waged against Ukraine can be.
These are the same people. If you ask these ‘kind’ people would they invade Finland by chance they will answer yes. Also, ask them if they support the bloody war that they started in Ukraine and they’ll say they support it with both hands.
Saints and good people) actually Russians know little about the Finns, because Russian propaganda is not working against them yet. Russian nationalists believe that they created Finland and have some territorial claims, and ordinary people are adequate until the television speaks. If ask them about Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic countries or America than more interesting things will begin there

Finn here. This was really nice and heartwarming. I know plenty of Russians who are such nice people. Few months ago I was graduating from my university and I met a fellow student from Russia. It was awkward at first but she was super nice, beautiful as heck and smart fellow engineering student like myself. I didn't want to harass her too much so I did not ask her number, but I kind of wish I did. My father died February 2022, but back when he was healthy, he travelled to Russia many times. He had even found a letter-friend Russian family during his travels and they send each other gifts all the time. When I learnt to speak, read and write some Russian, reading trough the letters the genuine warmth and friendship they had was heartwarming to read about. I still wonder how the family is doing all these years since then. The best I can wish for is for the world to find peace and move on from the past. Let's make a better tomorrow for all of us. Not as adversaries and distrust in our hearts, but as humans with shared interest in shared prosperity for all us around the globe.
not possible, you want lgbt, we don't want that, you want russian resources but is not willing to share technology, we want complete control over our state, the west wants markets no borders and one uni-culture with unlimited access for their pharma, military industrial complex, nato etc. too many conflicts of interests I'm afraid.
@@JamesSmith-ix5jd We don't want Russian resources. Trade wasn't even that big before the war between the countries, now it's practically non-existent. We have our values and cultures and I know the Russian youth is also much more positive and receptive because we grew up with interacting and learning from eachother that we aren't that different. The era of nationalistic isolationism is coming to its end. If not the least because travelling technology is developing and transportation is becoming faster, cheaper and easier, and economies need trade partners to stay competitive. You can say whatever you think about the west. None of us here think we are perfect. Well except maybe Americans.

A surprising contrast to the truth about Finland, where state-sponsored child-trafficking to pedophile rings is increasing as child services become more and more privatized.
As a Russian who grew up in Murmansk, city next to the borders of Finland and Norway, I really love these countries. My father was a sailor and worked quite often with the Norwegians, often visited Tromsø. He always spoke well of them both as persons and as professionals. As a child, I also visited Norway and Finland. It seems that at that time there was some kind of simplified visa regime for Murmansk residents and riding there regularly was not a problem. In Finland, we have been to Saariselka, Rovaniemi, Oulu and Helsinki. I remember especially well the trips to Rovaniemi and Helsinki. Rovaniemi gave the impression of a nice small town, somewhat similar to my hometown Murmansk but smaller, much more well-maintained and without a port. We went there during Christmas season and obviously visited the residence of Joulupukki, there really was a festive atmosphere and everyone around seemed very friendly. Yeah, I know that it is their job to be friendly with tourists, but dunno, it seemed sincere. It also seems that it was the then when I tasted pipparkakur for the first time. Since then, every New year and Christmas, we went to the Finnish goods store and bought these cookies. Over time, I began to notice that this has become a kind of tradition not only in our family but also in the families of my many friends. A lot of people from my circle generally fell in love with all sorts of sweet and not-so-sweet things from Finland/Norway, like salmiakki, Marabou and Fazer chocolates, Sørlandsis ice cream. All of it was much tastier than Russian analogues.
Helsinki reminded me of St. Petersburg with its architecture, but with completely different mood. Helsinki is not a boring place as many think. It's just more for vibes, not for parties, for me at least. Like walking around in a some cloudy day in October, visiting churches, libraries, embankments, chilling with a cup of coffee. In Norway I've been to Kirkeness and Tromsø. The people there were really chill and friendly. The centre of Tromsø, the Arctic Cathedral, the montains, the see, hot-dogs and sandwiches in Circle-K, all of these is something beautiful. Hope one day I'll get to Ålesund and Oslo. Also, my school cooperated with school in Tromsø so we often hosted guests from Norway, had some events tied to Norway and every year in March students from Tromsø came for a week to our school and our students went to Tromsø. You could choose to learn Norwegian from 7th till 9th grade. We even had additional Russian-Norwegian 12th grade where kids from both countries studied together. My friend moved to Oslo after 12th grade and now studies at the uni there. It was a common practice before the war as I know. It hurts me that today all of those ties are being torn. I love these countries and I want our peoples to be friends and partners. So sending love and wishing peace to all my nordic bros, you guys are great upd : could anybody recommend some Finnish/Norwegian music???
Most russian dont want to have peace. They want to have countries like Belarus which Russia used for the invasion of Ukraine. Yes they went also from Belarus against Kiev in the first push 24 of february 2022. What a crime.
I'm going to use my 'as a Finn' card to comment your sober and touching lament that you've written in exceptionally good English. After all, Finland and Norway both invested a lot of taxpayers' money in the bilateral development starting in the 1990's, from sewage treatment in St. Petersburg to school supplies in Karelia and Kola. Even food and clothing were supplied to locals in distress. There were new exchange programmes and all kinds of grassroot-level facilitation, and the target was to create the cultural and economic ties between people, companies and local administrations, some of which you described having experienced first-hand. Come to this day, Russia has permanently closed the Finnish consulates in Murmansk and Petroskoi, closed the ties between local administrations, confiscated Finnish-owned companies and even demolished some of the Finnish war memorials, in the nationalistic hubris of rewriting history and turning Finland into an enemy in the new narrative. These developments will evidently start to show in street interviews too, as time passes. So, don't lose your good memories, fight against the tide. Recommended Finnish albums if you like jazz: Timo Lassy's Moves or Elena Mindru's Hope.
That Yuve Tansson for Tove Jansson was very nice way to mix things. We here in Finland also like to switch the opening syllables of two words next to eachother :) Blessings to Russian people, and it's very sad to have this situation going on!😱😰

I would absolutely love to visit Finland. I'm Australian and the idea of having all that snow and bears around is so exotic to me. Their accent makes you smile too, it's such a happy accent.
Also, since you are on the other side of the globe, getting away from your mid summer and coming to the winter wonderland could be quite a culture and climate shock. A Positive one.
You have to be really lucky or unlucky to see a bear. Bears are masters of hiding. Dog and dozen drunken hunters usually can't find a bear even when they know there is one in the area.
They are friendly as part of their propaganda machine. Most of them are perfect rogues, unlike the people in the rest of the world, who can generally be counted on to be friendly and kind.
Tove Jansson's "Moomin" is very famous in Japan as it was made into an animation. Xylitol, used in chewing gum, is famous, and Nokia is also known. I know of course that it has recently officially joined NATO. I have never visited, but I'd like to see the Northern Lights.

As an American, I do too. You know after the USSR fell, Americans thought they could just introduce capitalism and democracy and all this Cold War stuff could be over? I grew up with Mutually Assured Destruction, it's time to move on.

"Kiitos osavaltion hallitukselle!" I don't know what you were trying to say, but you said "Thanks to the goverment of the state", but "osavaltio" is a combine word from "osa" - part and "valtio" - nation. We don't have "osavaltio" in Finland like in the United States. Maybe you were trying to say "Kiitos suomen hallitukselle", so, "big thanks to the finnish goverment?
American here. My wife used to work for a Finnish company. On one of her business trips to Helsinki I decided to tag along with my daughter. We decided to do a day trip to Estonia. I’ll never forget how the traditionally “reserved” Finns were suddenly a rowdy bunch with shopping carts full of cheap Estonian booze. And many VERY drunk Finns. I can attest that it’s very true about what that lady said about Finns (I guess Russians too) going to the Baltics on a major booze run. BTW, loved Finland! Beautiful country, people are friendly and it’s not overrun with tourists (granted, I was there in November).
Fun fact. November is called Marraskuu in Finnish. Marras is an old word which has to do with death and dead people. So, it's a Month of Death, which kind of describes the weather perfectly. 😅
Sending my love to Suomi 🖤 I've never been in Finland yet althought I have been learning Finnish for a long time. Finland has amazing literature and music (especially metal and goth). My gf, with whom I've lived for 7 years, is studying in Finland now, and I can't get a visa to visit her, because we are not officially married (lgbt can't marry in Russia). I miss her so much. I hope the war is over one day, and we'll finally reunite.
Finns are generally not to be trusted. They consider that all foreigners are murderers and rapists until proven otherwise, at least one Finn used that argument to explain normal Finnish behavior to foreigners, which I found perplexing.

Also, we Finns are fully aware that your population and your government are two separate things (in principle, at least).
Interesting how their views are still this positive. I know this attitude prevailed for the longest time before the war but still people think so highly of Finland. Its interesting to me as I live near the border, many Russians live in my town permanently, even my landlord is a Russian guy and I have friends there. Tourism was a big deal here before covid and then the war fucked it all up and what people in the video are saying is perfectly reflecting the attitude I've seen and heard in real life. Russians love Finland and for a good reason too, I've visited Russia and the contrast is like night and day with so many things. One girl in Viipuri once asked me "Don't you realise you live in paradise on earth?" She also told me she would love to move to Finland but she can't currently afford it. Living standard absolute is like paradise compared a whole lot of Russia so she was correct. And safety. This video was really nice to watch, made me smile a whole lot. ^_^
Finns are good at pulling the wool over the eyes of non-Finns to make them think Finland is great. It is a propaganda machine they inherited from Czarist Russia. Finns are mostly rogues and any dealing with them is likely to go bad.

Thankyou for posting this video. I think that it's one of your best. It's great that the folks interviewed all sad positive things about their contact with Finland. Such lovely people, genuine, funny, insightful. I hope one day all this nightmare will be over and people of Finland and Russia can start meeting again.
I'm from Finland. This was a really nice street interview. We need these kinds of videos of citizens in one country sharing their vibes of other countries in general. It is eye opening to your own culture from the outside. I've talked recently to a friend who moved to Norway so I don't see him all that much. He said he regretted learning russian and it was a waste of time. I asked him why he decided to learn it in the first place and he said he loves the culture. I said he probably still loves the culture. We must always separate the powerhouse from the people. I wish peace upon us all. And please don't hate on anyone. Nobody decided where they were born.
Oh well, I regret learning Finnish and not focusing more on Russian. It just stands to reason that there are more nice Russians in the world than Finns, if only because there are more of them.
@@ThomasGMcElwain you can still learn Russian too. Don't know why my post suddenly made you regret learning Finnish though. I guess we all are fragile these days and people can get triggered by anything. Moi moi
@@Censeo Oh no, I regretted it before reading your post. When it comes to Finland, it does not take much to trigger me. There is always the straw that broke the camelˀs back. Funny thing about languages. I took a year of Russian in high school back in California nearly sixty years ago, and Russians invariably praise my Russian, which is obviously anything but fluent. Many people do not notice from my Finnish that I am a foreigner, but whenever a Finn wants to offend me, he starts in on my Finnish speech. In the public sauna once a man was bragging about the Finnish school system. I remarked that part of the success might come from the pupils, who are calmer than in other countries and are more likely to hear what the teacher is saying. It turned out he was a teacher and that remark offended him. So he said, "You think you speak Finnish so well, but I can say that just because you have a big vocabulary, pronounce it well, and do not make grammar mistakes, does not mean you speak Finnish well." I do not know where he got the idea I thought I spoke Finnish well. On the other hand, I do not understand his criteria for judging what fluent speech is. But you are right. It is never too late to learn Russian better.
@@ThomasGMcElwain So even in this example of yours you see nothing wrong? Although you might have meant it in neutral way that the students are different (which they to some degree maybe are because of the culture but mainly because of the education system) it might have come off as you judging his profession and his countries schooling system. The response was over the top also, but it seems you have these isolated examples why you don't like finns and it doesn't make sence. Most people would also think about that situation from the others point of view and realize he was an individual not an example of the entire finnish population which it seems like you are doing. And again things have changed a lot even in the past couple decades so commenting on finns based on something 50 or so years ago is not very fair to be honest. I am sure you also came accross helpful and polite finns.

But the fact that there was no mention of Kimi or Mika makes me think car racing isn't really big in Russia excluding the elite... which kind of makes sense.
To me Finns have a realistic attitude, an awesome sense of humour and a low level of hostility. And when I say realistic I mean it as a huge compliment: you won't hear a Finn spouting nonsense except extremely rarely.
Thank you. History has thought most of us Finns a thing or two about humility. We have some idiots too as you can read here in comments, but it's same everywhere, you just can't teach them All how to behave.
I agree. As a Swede I sometimes wish Finland governed a lot in Sweden. Like schools and defence, areas where Sweden went completely unrealistic for decades.
In our culture it is normal and accepted to not talk much and be introverted. We don't have small talk culture in same way as many other countries have. Some foreigners might see it as rude and awkward and some see it as refreshing and peaceful when you only say meaningful things. Once you become closer with a Finn you will have more relaxed and fun conversations and learn about our dry and even dark sense of humour :)
I disagree about the low level of hostility part. We are often angry on the inside. But we are rational with our violence. And I'm glad we very rarely have to be hostile. But I guess the low level of hostility does reflect to the outside through the rational application. Your appreciation is appreciated.

So of course people have fond memories and a positive picture about Finland, otherwise they wouldn't want to travel here.. Still.. As someone born in Finland since my parents moved here in 1994 and who lived in Finland for their whole life but from a Russian family, it's great to see Russians acknowledge the Finnish culture. It's been great here. It's just sad that because of the current situation Finns don't really like those with Russian surnames or double citizenship, like me. Work applications get denied, long time friends turning their back and Finns from the internet people wishing my family and me the most horrible death and threatening they would beat me to death if they ever saw my face IRL. Just because of the surname. I want the early 2000s back. Important to point out though that it's mainly the older generation.

About Finland being a ”cold” country: I think many people in Finland also think that Russia is the coldest place there can be (Siberia, etc.). In Helsinki street language the word for ’cold’ is ’holotna’ (because we somehow associate cold with Russia).
Holotna is not used only in Helsinki slang. There are in fact a lot of loan words from Russian language in Finnish. Probably only second to Swedish loan words.
As a Finn, I loved to see how people smiled as they talked about Finland. Thank you all for your kind words. I love Russian people and St. Petersburg too. Awesome city! I have visited Russia four times with my band, and totally loved it! Warmhearted, kind people - at least all those who I had the honour to get to know. Not much of any Z-people amongst them. They appreciate more peace, freedom, prosperity and rock n' roll. You have a great country. Some day we can be good neighbours again, with freedom on both sides of the border. Stay strong and wait. I think Finland is a cool country. I like they way their language sounds, and I like the way they sound when they speak Swedish. They sound ... cosy. Although Finns technically are not Scandinavian, and although our languages are not related, I think there is still a lot in common between our cultures.
A finn once told me, that he believes that Sauna culture was originally invented in the Baikal region. So I believe Sauna, vodka and ice hockey are three things most russians and finns have in common. ;-)
As a Finn, I would like to correct that we are not Scandinavians, but the Nordic countries. This is a pretty common misconception so we don't let it bother us too much. Actually, a very small part of northern Finland belongs to Scandinavia.
We love Finland so much that we invaded and annexed its territories twice, all of it in 1809 and 10% of it during WW2. The latter being similar to Ukraine: A little David inflicting heavy losses to the Russian Goliath. International help was planned too, but Germany prevented it from arriving on time.
Haha, clown. In 1809 Russia defeated the Swedes and created Finland and gave it autonomy. And then gave it the land of Vyborg as a gift. Oh, those Western historians in the comments. You got me. 😄
In the winter war Finland won. Finland retained it's independence and freedom. That time Finland's population was 3,5 million and Soviet Russia's likely 160 million. Even the Kids understand the difference. Losing 10% land is a small price of the independence and freedom.
@@cinderellaandstepsisters I agree, but my point was not to state it was worth it or not. I just wanted to point out that Russia, which constantly claims never to have invaded any country, has a long history of unprovoked and unjustified invasion, and repeated invasion at that, both for Ukraine and Finland. As for the worthiness of losing 10% of a territory to avoid losing 100 of it, Finland would have been better off signing a treaty of non-agression, a demilitarized zone at the border with Russia, no nuclear weapon in the whole country, etc. to retain all of its territory and especially the natural resources present in this unilateral 10% land grab by Russia. I am certain historians have plenty of smarter _a posteriori_ scenarios too. Edit: I also wanted to mention that Europe is a densely populated continent, where you are bound to have large cities such as Saint Petersburg near a border with another country, so Russia needs to learn to live with this geopolitical basic fact. This does not mean that neighboring countries will bomb your cities, but if you plan to protect your cities by grabbing neighboring land, it means that 1) you actually attacked your neighbor and 2) you plan to attack your neighbor again or even further, that's the only reason for wanting your cities to be safe not just from attack, but also from retaliation. It's a purely warrior point of view based on personal needs, with not the slightest bit of diplomacy or consideration for others' perspectives.

So sending love and wishing peace to all my nordic bros, you guys are great
upd : could anybody recommend some Finnish/Norwegian music???

November is for sure the worst month to visit in terms of weather
If you want Finns to open up, give them a bottle.
Booze is so insanely expensive in Finland, and also state controlled, that we go wild when we get to the basically free booze :P
Sounds like Swedes coming to Denmark to buy booze x5 :-)
Hearing kind words about Finland from our neighbour made my day. Us finns are generally very pleased any time our country is even mentioned 🤭
Finns are generally not to be trusted. They consider that all foreigners are murderers and rapists until proven otherwise, at least one Finn used that argument to explain normal Finnish behavior to foreigners, which I found perplexing.
They were speaking nicely about my home country.
They don't dare to say anything else, they remember Simo Häyhä.

The fall of the "Mannerheim Line" and the defeat of the main grouping of Finnish troops put the enemy in a difficult position. Under these conditions, Finland turned to the Soviet government with a request for peace.
On the night of March 13, 1940, a peace treaty was signed in Moscow, according to which Finland ceded about a tenth of its territory to the USSR and pledged not to participate in coalitions hostile to the USSR. On March 13, hostilities ceased.
I just adore Finnish English accent. Actually have a discord friend from Finland, great lad. One of the funniest dudes. For me, Finland always was one of top countries to visit. And almost all of my hopes crushed when our 'great leader' made a wonderful decision to create a fucking blood bath.

We ourselves call the Finnish English accent 'rally English'. I'd also like to visit Russia some day, but thanks to this 'Special Fucking Genocidal Bloodbath Expedition' (whatever the hell Vlad calls it these days), there's no way in hell am I going there for a long while.

As a Finn I am humbled by your words

As a Finn, I found this really interesting. The few Russians I know in person have been the kindest people I've met.
I'm sure Ukrainians feel the same...
Me as russian myself love finns and metal music, also I'm jealousy how people in Finland respect their mother nature.
As a Finn, I think you are pretty gullible.
I suppose it doesn't matter what's ur ethnicity than actions, behaviour
Well I definitely didn't expect this. It actually made me smile, I was expecting something quite a bit harsher but I am glad these people had good things to say. I shouldn't be surprised really, up until recently the tourism we had coming from Russia was really high, probably highest out of all single countries in the world. So of course people have fond memories and a positive picture about Finland, otherwise they wouldn't want to travel here.. Still.. Russian government has been very hostile (not "war-like" hostile but way worse than ever before) towards us for a while now so I do wonder how it affects the majority of the people and their view.
FYI. I think she meant the old lead singer of Nightwish, Tarja Turunen. Current singer (who is in the picture) is not Finnish, although the band is.

Finland contributed a lot in killing Saint-Petersburg (Leningrad then) people during the WWII, 3 mln children, women, men ... for this USSR should have erased finland from the planet earth but they are merciful , you must be grateful.
The loses of the winterwar did nikita khrushchev invent to destroy the stalin cult, 53k-68k soviets died in the Winterwar what every finish historyan and 99% of russians claim, and ukraine is an little david😂? This countrys had over 40m people and they become more money and wepaons in worth of Chinas defense Budget, atleast 30k forgainer soldiers are fighting in the ukranian army and they countless top nato officals died in mysterious accidents after they holdydays to poland 😂 and russia attack finland unprovoced ? Finland get they independents in 1917 and tought its an good opportunity to steal the russians regions how u call it petsamo, repola and porajavi, lenin only agree to that because we was an in huge civilwar, stalin later gave the fins a simple offer to give it back or the land around saintpetersburg as an exchange and the ussr was only so paranoid about finland because russian spys claim finland plan to bring the nazis into the country what they really later did after they broke the moscow peace treaty, today fins are mad that they most payed so huge war reparations for they crimes on civilians
I've met people of different nationalities on the internet and out of all finns were the most chill and nice.
I also admire finns for their love of motorsports. They're probably the nation with highest rate of racing drivers per capita, pretty cool.
