Hey Chris! Im a pretty new viewer (and subscriber) of your channel, and I just want to say how refreshing it is to find RUclips channels with hosts with such integrity and passion for what they do... but in a way that it does not affect the objectiveness of their reviews with bias.
You seem like a class act Chris, thanks for doing this! The funniest thing is, I just came here for a quick review on a gift idea, but I ended up subbing out of how great the channel host is haha.

Personally I've never bothered with their modern cameras simply because I have a SX-70 Sonar that pretty much out performs anything they've released since their impossible days. I've never had any auto focus or exposure issues with the Sonar and it's over 40 years old! To be honest you might have an easier time getting a Sonar converted to take 600 film and modded further to shoot I-type film over messing with Polaroid's Now+

Thanks Chris for the update. Sad to hear that the 2nd camera has focus issues. Seems quality control is not of good quality. I was told (mail) to reset the camera by opening the film door and pressing the on-off switch for 8 seconds. So I did a few times and indoor flash or without flash worked as expected. Meanwhile the weather became too cold for outdoor shooting and I put away the camera...
Edit: in addition just found a review on the channel Mango Street from 2 months ago. I’ve seen several over exposed photos. People don’t notice the problem. An SX70, modified or not, or an SLR680 remains a better choice in the long run.

@@One.Hundred it’s honestly still a lot of trial & error for me but for the now+ i like to go into manual mode in the app and control my settings myself from there. i will even take a light meter reading and try to go off that as well as the app.

I have the gen1 now + and after trying to find ways to hack the firmware I found a possible work around to the over exposure problem. I used the Custom program with the + setting. In the app goto Tripod Mode and just set the exposure -1/3 and save by pressing the + button at the top of the screen. This saves the -1/3 exposure to the in camera + setting. Activate the mode by holding down the + for several seconds. The camera is now thinking its on a tripod using auto exposure but it knocks it down by -1/3. You can try going to -2/3 but you'll really lose the dark areas. This doesn't fix the auto focus issue so I just put my finger tip an inch or two in front of the sensor under the lens and wait for the click sound of the lens change, move my finger away while gently holding the shutter button to keep it set, then fully press the shutter to make the picture. Best of luck!

    Hi Chris, love the videos.
I’ve pretty much given up with the Now+. It’s never taken a decent exposure in daylight, either way over or under exposed.
Raised a support call with Polaroid as I came to conclusion the camera must be faulty as the results are just erratic, with lots of email back and forth, sending scans of the images as examples etc. All of a sudden communication with Polaroid just stopped. Raised a new support call quoting the original support call and have received no response from them except the auto request received email.
Such a shame as I want this to be a good camera and a good company, but the way I have been treated means they get no more of my money.
I guess I don’t have the leverage of a RUclips channel behind me to be taken seriously.

I recently got a Now+ after shooting with a Sonar SX-70 for a while (Because I really dig the "tripod" mode in the app) and I was getting some similar results to you, which I found odd given I was coming off In an Instant's video which had arguably better results, so what was he doing that I wasn't?
The more I played with the camera and read the manual I think I found something that may help those who are having similar issues with autofocus (note I'm not having the same exposure problems, I'm not sure if that's just me having the right gut feeling on exposure latitude and when to compensate or just lucky or what). See I was used to the autofocus that was on my Sonar, which actually moves the lens back and forth, but on the Now+ it's more like a One-Step where instead of having that range of motion there's just two zones, Portrait and Landscape, that both have a wide hyperfocal distance. So when you do the half press on the shutter it's just deciding between one of two positions, not where it sits in the range like the old Sonar did (I have a Sun 660 and Impulse AF and I'm not actually sure what they do, it doesn't SEEM like it has that same range of motion the SX-70 does so I suspect they ALSO have limited zones like a One Step Close Up has). Once I kept that in mind I was hitting focus with much greater consistency, and when I didn't it was "Oh it went for the Landscape zone" which explained blurry close up subjects with inexplicably in focus backgrounds. How it determines focus SEEMS to be center weighted, so if the subject is really small like a flower there's a chance the camera doesn't "see" it and looks ahead of it, at least in my experience. That said I have been able to do focus lock by looking at the subject, half press and listening for the focal distance to switch, and then recompose.
It's still not perfect, but so is life with integral film and even my Fuji 500AF struggles with it's branded autofocus from time to time, but I hope that maybe helps to you or anyone watching. Obviously would have helped with better communication on Polaroid's part but I don't want to speak on their behalf.

Any camera that uses a wide field light meter will always require adjustment. For instance if you take a picture of a house against the sky you will need to darken to see the sky or lighten to see the house. But this that you're experiencing is NOT that

  • @bendejo10

Hey, Chris! I have a Polaroid Go and it is my first “modern” Polaroid camera. I have been using the Go since August. I’ve recently discovered that if you “half-press” the shutter button there is a slight click inside the camera. I’ve even half pressed it while looking at the lens and I see some activity in the camera when I do. There’s nothing in the manual about it (unless I missed it) but ever since I discovered it, my pictures out of the GO have looked much better. I used to just straight press it when I first got it. I mostly use my SLR 680 or SX70. If I do use a plastic lens, I use my Sun 660. Nothing beats the vintage Polaroid cameras.
Polaroid was a billion dollar company in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, so they didn’t cut costs when building their products back then. That isn’t the case now. Currently, I think they can’t really afford too much quality otherwise they wouldn’t make any money. They’re barely hanging as it is. I want to buy a Now+ just to support, anyway…I want to ask (this might be a dumb question) but have you tried the “half-press" with the NOW+? Maybe that’s why you’re having focus/exposure issues. Perhaps the clicking I’m hearing on the GO is the camera metering/calculating focus distance on a subject. I wouldn’t put it past them to have the same system functionality in the NOW+. Seems like something so simple yet I missed it for a couple of months. I didn’t expect anything to happen on a half press with the new cameras but apparently something does happen. Felt like an idiot. Idk hope this helps!
    Love your channel,
    b.

You are spot on. I am mostly taken back by the fact that Polaroid must clearly be aware of these issues so easily replicable and so widely documented. Yet nothing, but further push for sales.
I had 500W (2x250) shining in my face from a mere 4 feet. I do have a light meter, btw and I know how to use it. This was not sufficient light for the Now+. Turning the flash on activates the app’s trigger button and promptly produces an over exposed image.
But I can give you a half a dozen similar stories, ill metering, wasted shots.
    What a shame.

Recently I bought Polaroid Now. Still learning how to use it, and learning about instant photography. A thing I do not like is not having control on the type of lens for close ups/selfies or landscape, for instant. I have seen the camera does not choose the right lens or you just simply do not know which one it did chose 🤷🏻

Love your videos as always, Chris!
I had the same problems with the I-1 (that was my introduction to Polaroid since 2018-ish) and I thought that that was just the aesthetic and not a problem, but watching this made me realize the camera is the problem.
    Almost 4 years of struggle.
    LOL. 😆
Had a lot of overexposed and out of focused photos because of that, and I only ever get mid-acceptable results when using the app which is kind of annoying because I really wanted it to be more point and shoot. But, oh well. Gotta make do of what I have. 🙃
If you can, please make a review with the I-1 since you're the expert in all things Polaroid. I see some people cover it but they always say it's amazing and perfect, and those were really misleading.
I know that that's from the Impossible project and before the couple rebrandings, but if you can get your hands on one, please make one. :)
Your honesty is helpful and we can easily relate to you compared to others who hold back.
Also, I am accepting Polaroid cameras and if you won't be using your Polaroid Now+ and you're considering giving it away, I will happily and gratefully accept it. 😁
I know that's absurd and cringey but I just gotta put it out there and at least say something. I would be grateful. Very. ☺
    Happy holidays!

I just bought one hoping they would've been addressed because I wanted the manual control offered by the app. Cant trust the light meter at all in the app, much better off using a seperate app. Exposures showing -2 or -3 EV in the polaroid app come out much better.

  • @jeremyrebelka
    @jeremyrebelka Год назад

I had exactly the same problem with the + camera. I also own the OneStep2 which never had any issues and I came to the same conclusion.
Now after seeing your video with identical results I'm just convinced it is an actual problem.
I think I know what makes a difference btw this cameras (well at least on outside, first glimpse):
I think its the light sensor - on One Step 2 the sensor is enclosed inside the ~3mm enclosure - visible btw the OneStep2 Logo and the lens.
It makes it see only the light coming from the front and not from the sides.
On the other hand the sensor on the Now+ is located under the visor, it has a small lip around it but its like 0.5mm so I'm guessing it is getting a lot of light
from the side and from the above which skews the measurement.
Now when I think about it it should be actually easy to make a plastic guard, or even use a piece of straw around the light sensor on the Now+.
Unfortunately I threw mine out in anger.

It's kinda funny, I had pretty similar exposure problems with my OneStep 2, i just couldn't get it right. Most of the times it was extremely overexposed, sometimes underexposed. Meanwhile I had some great results with my two vintage ones, a SX-70 Sonar and a variant of the Sun 660 Autofocus called "Lightmixer". I love to use both of them, especially because I literally got the Lightmixer for the price of a 600 film pack in absolute pristine condition. Meanwhile the OneStep 2 gathers dust because I had too much bad results and the damn battery constantly goes flat within a few days even without usage.

Hey, I know I’m late to this party but I have to agree with the review of the Polaroid Now +. I bought this camera 2 weeks ago to in the hopes it would solve the exposure inconsistencies I’ve experienced with a project I’m working on… Uh, yeah I think it got worse. I gave it the benefit of the doubt for the first pack of film I shot and decided I’d take it on vacation, give it the ole college try; mistake! It was so off on some of my exposures I had to triple check I wasn’t doing anything wrong; I was in shock, all over exposed. So I thought I’d try some simple exposure compensation settings using the camera settings only, messing with the app is not ideal when time is limited, and honestly I have yet to see a major difference when using manual settings via the app; plus it wonky. I guess my real issue- is that it; do we just accept that it’s a POS and throw it in the garbage pile?! This is Polaroid (well Impossible but) where is the QC and RND on these things? Why can I buy a camera from the 70s’ and have better results? I know they won’t stand behind the product and I know I’m stuck with this camera; it’s really annoying. I actually don’t want my money back more than I just want the product to work correctly and consistently. Out of 5 packs of film (40 images) 2 maybe 4 images were acceptable, and I shot outdoors mostly in daylight little to no overcast. Thanks for the product review

Totally agree with your review. I have the same problem with now+. Photos are always underexposed and way out of focus. Instax SQ1 that has zero control and only allows to change lens from main to selfie takes way better and sharper pics. I thought I'm gonna get rid of the now+ but they want me to send it to check and repair. In my opinion there is something wrong with a light meter. I did test polaroid auto pic with polaroid auto +1ev and instax - all with flash indoors. Instax gave me more light and sharpness than now+ with +1ev. I really hope they won't send me another copy and return money because I "accidentally" bought lomo glass square... :D

I don't see how this thing could be picking the wrong element in some of these shots. The leaves and dog are half way understandable, small object in foreground vs large in background, but the shot of the hummer makes no sense. Somethings gotta be damaged/misassembled.

watching the other video was painful, because the lighting you were shooting in was perfectly fine most of the times, so there was no reason to be having such problems with exposure.
I thought maybe the camera was being pushed to it's limits trying to do tripod mode in the really dark settings inside, but over and over again, the camera was just... all over the place...

Also, wouldn't all the manual options inside the app help as well?

    • @derpyllama1857

Well of course you can use manual mode but you're better off just getting a different camera so that you don't have to use your phone every time you want to take a photo. Also the exposure compensation on the camera (like when you hold down the flash button) is based off of the seemingly faulty light sensor so it would be nearly impossible to tell if the camera was gonna over or under expose the shot.
