I'll never forget playing thru this scene on my SNES back in 96. I still get that ASMR feeling when this song plays. The great thing about Chrono Trigger is EVERY playable character has a great power up, emotionally transformational moment on the game. None of them are as epic as Frog's, but they all get stronger by overcoming thier past. Quite a remarkable story telling mechanic used to perfection in this game. You don't need over the top fireworks and absurd power levels in a game, you just need to feel that your characters matter and that they are stronger not due to some random Mcguffin thrown their way, but by truly bettering themselves in an emotionally impactful way. It's a truth most game makers and Hollywood script writers forget.

I am eternally grateful that Square and other jrpg companies realized in the early-mid 90s they had all of the hardware necessary to go from a console generation where it was mostly refining and bringing to homes what people had been doing in the arcades for the past couple years, to making full ass stories with fleshed out characters and music that ended up sticking with me into adulthood. Hell yeah.
No need for voice acting, uncanny valley graphics, and bangs and belts and DARKNESS. Write and love your material like this. Our imaginations will take care of the rest.

Yea, I still prefer the original SNES version translation. The re-translation they did with later versions is weird. I remember playing the DS version a few years back to try to see the new extra content and like half the item names were changed, and usually not for the better.
Little fun thing i discovered just now (sadly just now): Finn and Nagi from Evertale are bascialy CHRONO AND FROG. Their SSR versions can carry their respective weapons AND their personality is near 100% that of those 2 (thou seeing Frog/Glenn compliment everything that is female, even when it would be a trap, would be somewhat hilarious tbh.). Nagi = Frog, can wield the Greatsword/2 Handed Sword , while Finn = Chrono, can wield the Katana. Their movesets are also more align with chrono trigger on SSR rank sooo dont ever even tell me Evertale is bad when it has those 2 hero's in it! (and Nagi is a fucking FROG btw. wich makes that even more awesome, thou finn does not look like a badass hero sadly..)
What sucks is that the marketing for the game is trying to attract the horror game crowd where if it instead tried to attract the RPG/anime crowd it would be liked 1000% more. Imagine if instead of the pokemon horror ads we currently have they switched it to anime-style adaptations of moments in the game's story. The game's sales would be through the roof and it wouldn't have any bad reputation, allowing people to see it shine for what it is
Glenn and Cyrus reminds me of Cloud and Zack. Living Legacy. I'm sure ff7 drew from Chrono Trigger and added their own touch. They stood on the shoulders of the greatest giant and became giants of their own.
Just as Cyrus is Roland and Glenn is Oliver, the slicing of the mountain is a reference to the Gap of Roland (also called Roland's Breach), a stone formation that was supposedly created when Roland tried to destroy his sword (Durendal) in order to keep it out of the hands of his enemies by slashing the mountainside.
Dude even with the load times, the PS1 version was great due to those cool little animated cutscenes! Just be glad you got to experience such an epic game!

You get that slightly earlier in the game before this whole cutscene. I think when you first bring the sword to him in his frog pad and have the sleepover party. I was hoping to talk about cute frog boys and do each other’s nails instead of going into our childhood traumas but he’s still a homie
