  • Maria first learned that she had stomach cancer in 2005. She discovered she had a hematoma in her ovary, along with stomach pains. The GI and gynecologist at the time dismissed Maria’s condition and figured she had a bleeding ulcer. Thankfully, Maria kept advocating for herself. She had an endoscopy that revealed stage 3 stomach cancer.
Maria had surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy over the course of eight months. She regained her strength and focused on raising her family, working, and moving forward. However, in February 2020, Maria learned that her cancer had returned. It was shocking news since she’d gone for years without any issues.
At this point, Maria’s kids were grown, and they had a better understanding of the daunting journey that lay ahead. Maria thought she’d be well-prepared to face stomach cancer again, given that she’d been through it once. However, it was exceptionally challenging. She started treatment at the beginning of COVID when many hospitals were shut down. Maria’s treatments were marked by pain and suffering, and eventually, she had to go into surgery shortly before her 50th birthday. After the surgery, Maria nearly died - she “coded”, but came back from the brink of death.
Maria says that living life without a stomach has not been an easy road. She’s had many side effects and has needed to adjust her lifestyle to stay healthy. Despite these challenges, she’s grateful to be alive and to have more time with her family. Maria recommends advocating for yourself, even in small manners. You know your body best!

Doctors don't care enough to listen to the patient. My son was ignored as well and by the time they did any testing he was stage 4 incurable and he passed at the beginning of 2020. You are truly a warrior bless you for sharing your fight with us.

My condolences to your family, I had got an endoscopy done, but to no avail, no answers they just keep telling me it's gastritis. That's didn't help much

🌹that's true some doctors only have a short window to hear us and take us seriously, I think they zone out and tablets seem quickest way to solve our concerns 😢 whether it's a waste of time doing tests at least there helping us, but to send us away with. Your ok don't worry your just tired, is insult to our mental health . I waited over a yr to have scans tests at hospital then it was cancelled to telephone call to again tell a specialist my symptoms, which I already did with Dr. I didn't get to phone call in time so was discharged?😮 After waiting ,being ill ,seeing Dr. many times, I'm still ill still loosing weight, NHS is letting us all down starting with Drs..

As a stage 1 survivor this terrifies me, but also gives me SO MUCH hope. This disease and evil and tricky. Was your recurrence on endoscopy?
    I'm so glad you're doing so well❤

You've had an endoscopy. I also had that but was told it's gastritis, but I've been like this for a while.
