- A History and Folklore infused tutorial, of a braided wreath hairstyle for long hair, held up by only some ribbon!
My instagram: / prettyshepherd
This kind of hairstyle was worn in many villages throughout Hungary in the 19th up until the mid-20th century, when some of the photos I present were taken. It keeps all of your hair up and out of the way when work needs to be done. Because of this, many girls wore this (and other similar styles) on an everyday basis.
If you've tried this hairstyle in your own everyday life (or as part of a historical/traditional costume) let me know how it turned out!

Because of you, I'm growing my hair out again. If I live long enough (I'm 74) I hope to do this hairstyle one day! It really looks lovely on you!
I’m 65 and also trying to see how long my hair will grow.
I love seeing comments like this, keep me going with growing myself. Hopefully I will live as long as you have.
It looks wonderful.😮
JESUS loves you! Come to Him to experience indescribable peace, and the infinite love He has for you! He can heal all illnesses and disorders, and with Him you can overcome any and every crisis the world may put in your way. Repent of your sins and start a relationship with Him today. Call out His name and He will answer you!
Just curious are you using hair dye or working with natural gray/white hairs?
USA Commenter here! I worked at a Renaissance Festival this past summer as a fictional Hungarian Countess's Daughter, and your videos were SO HELPFUL in getting the hair right!
I’m really glad it was helpful! So, I got to be the fictional Hungarian Countess’ Daighter’s virtual hairdresser :D
Im Lithuanian and we actually do have hairstyles like that . My mother used to wear it when she was younger my family still has pictures of her with it
Edit: Where did you learn all of the hairstyles?
I read a lot of books, and studied archive photos, to try and guess how they've done it :) then it's just trial and error... sometimes the hairstyle doesn't turn out like I want it, but I'll just try again another time
I have very long hair (past my waist) and your videos have been a LIFESAVER in how to style it in ways that don't pull on my head or swing around while I'm working! I will have to try this ribbon hairstyle - I have been practicing your crown braid hairstyle and have slowly but surely been getting better at it! Thank you so much for making these videos - the historical focus, easy instructions and overall wonderful atmosphere makes these a treasure!
I love this hairstyle so much! And please do more hairstyles! I have thick kneelength hair and need to find good ways to corral it on top of my head. If I don't, it gets stuck in everything and people next to me on the couch sit on it.
And as for traditional hairstyles, I am part Armenian, and most Armenian hairstyles are just long, decorated braids, or buns at the nape of the neck. The traditional headwear often includes a hat and veil for women, so wearing hair in a wreath doesn't really work underneath that. I, however, don't wear a hat very often, and I find wreaths to be more secure and less prone to getting dipped in soup/stuck on door and cupboard handles/sat on than long braids, so I wear them much more often.
Look up torrinpaige's RUclips channel
This is absolutely the BEST way to make milk maid braids!!! I am so excited to finally have found a wonderful way to wear my hair! I've been skipping the ribbon and using bobby pins instead, and it looks fantastic! Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. I now have a super easy wreath/milk maid hairstyle for every day.
I love your grey hair, it's absolutely beautiful! Especially because you look so young, it's very unique ❤️
Yes, lovely! Never let them talk you into ruining it with dye!
My grandmother did something kinda simular, I am from austria 🤔 maybe because Hungary is our neighbor and I personally think there are a lot of similarities there :)
Extremely late to the party....
But yes, we have a similar hairstyle in swedish tradition, however we use the ribbon to tie up the ponytail and then simply wrap it around the the hair (which has been slit into two just like here). Tie of the ribbon at the end of the hair, wrap it around your head and voilá
Do you know if it's more common in certain parts of Sweden? Sounds like a Dalarna-thing to me, but that's just my impression.
@@YuliaLinderoth I know it's connected to certain folk costumes, but unsure of exactly from which region. Dalarna is very plausible.
I use this hair style often. My hair is about mid thigh in length. Only thing I do a tad differently is that at the first cross over, I make the start of a knot, that first twist, then continue to wrap around my head. I am of Italian descent, and remember my Grandmother doing this before she cut it all off.
Are you Hungarian right? I’m so happy that I found someone from my own country who makes videos like this!
Yes! I kind of started making these, because I couldn't find them 😉
Hajrá! 😉
I found your channel recently. I love your sense of humour and I love that you're giving me so many different, doable long hair styles. My hair has been long and very short many times over. It is a little past my waist now and I love my long hair, you know why? It's less time consuming than short hair, especially with wavy, curly thick hair. I only brush my hair when I wash it with a wide toothed comb in the shower or I lose my locks. I usually tie it in a knot, if I don't have a hair tie or throw it into a quick bun, but it gets old. I've already tried one of your tutorials and will more! Thank you and yes I subscribed
I've been looking more into my Ukrainian Heritage/traditional dress but haven't found any videos specifically for that (yet) but there seems to be overlap in Hungarian and Ukrainian styles. I very much appreciate your videos! These videos are so awesome!
this is the cutest hairstyle!!
edit, i got to the last part & here’s my essay:
it’s so simple yet complicated (ok this doesn’t make sense) like you only need a ribbon but the braiding makes it look complicated. it is girly but also very like useful as you can do stuff without messing it up/your hair getting in the way. it is also very versatile. it looks very cute but is appropriate for an older person too. it’s good for both casual occasions like a picnic and more formal occasions like prom (i’ll probably wear this hairstyle to prom). there is also like many variations of this hairstyles as you mentioned, the possibilities are endless!
anyways i throughly enjoyed this video, and you are so pretty?? subscribed, definitely keep making more videos ♡
Yay! A+ for being the first to write the essay! I’m really glad you enjoyed this look so much. I’ll be posting some more videos ‘till prom season, so maybe you will have to change your mind :)) but if you do recreate this style (or another) let me know, I would love to see :)
I adore you and your lovely, gray hair....now that I'm a year away from turning 60, all the ribbons and flowers make me feel like a "little kid"....but they look very appropriate and nice on you!!!...love your videos and your sense of humor....very educational and interesting....
I love your style! I’ve cut my hair to collar bone length, so I’m now looking at inspiration videos so that I can adapt them for shorter hair. Gone are the simple days when I could make a hair stick bun in 20 seconds. Turns out, your hair needs to be a certain length for the hair stick to hold properly or the stick falls out.
SO pretty! I'm going to have to try this style as well!
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! I'd love to see how this looks on your hair :)
I can only dream to have looooong hair like yourself, totally beautiful.❤
My hair is so thick that I can't tuck the ends under braids (if I were to wrap it like this). I've tried this style so many times and just can't. My hair is also so smooth that bpbby pins slip out... so I've just given up on this kind of look. I can do fancy buns tho! That's my saving grace because I can't stand my hair being in my face
Have you tried using the spiral spin pins? I also have very thick hair and it’s really the only way I can get a crown braid to work for me. I have not tried this style yet with ribbons but I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll still need the spin pins 🤷🏻♀️
@@lindsaycate2429 I have! They're amazing. I was actually able to do updos when I discovered them! But I can't tuck the ends of my hair under the braids cuz the ends are so thick.
Have you seen Morgan Donner’s no elastic video? She shows another variation of this, but you first make a ribbon hair band and then you weave the ribbon into braids.
For this situation a lot of modern people like to use products that give the hair more grip like hair wax or gel, volume spray or coconut oil. I've also experienced a lot of the slipping when I still shampooed my hair. Maybe you could try more days in between hair washes if you haven't already experimented with that? Just my spontaneous ideas :)
if your hair is too slippery, try stop using conditioner, since all it does is make hair smooth.
my mother's side of the family or Equadorian natives do this hair style for little girls usually always a girl 13 and under.
Russian folk costume in some regions has a similair hairstyle, but for married women, who covered their hair. And, since these braids were hidden under some type of headdress, instead of ribbons, simple ties or coarse threads were used.
As a girl with long hair, I love your videos, their very helpful
nice hairstyle and good edit! I remember you did this style for Victoria and it looked mad cute
Thanks! Yeah I remember as well. Great times :)
Cool!
I might give it a go.
I currently wear my hair in a similar fashion. My hair is very fine and reaches the top of my bum.
I use a thin, lightweight scarf 13 inches wide and about 64 inches long. Divide my hair in half, bringing to the front. Drape the scarf behind my neck to the front. I divide each section into two, and use the scarf as the third strand and make an English braid on each side, securing the ends with small elastics, wrapping the ends of my hair in the scarf. I bring one braid over my head and secure with 3 or 4 small bobby pins, bring the other braid over in front of the first, then tie the ends of the scarf behind my head and tuck the ends into the bit of scarf that’s between the braids at the back of my head.
It only takes 10-15 minutes to do, and I get lots of compliments on it.
I find it much easier than traditional “milkmaid “ braids, since I don’t have to struggle with tucking the ends of the braids somewhere. Plus the scarf adds volume and I have different colors to choose from.
I like the method you demonstrated in that it requires no pins. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! That does sound similar indeed 😊 I can imagine you get compliments for colourful updos
Yes, please make more!! I love it and my hair is very long and I'm always looking for new ways to do it. All the better if it's from history!
Love your channel🖤🖤🖤 I recently cut my hair because was always using a bun and didn't have ideas of how to arrange it. Now I will let it grow long back again and apply some of your knowledge🤗Thank you!
Interesting. Thank you. My Mother is from Sopron in Hungary. I love learning about Hungarian culture.
This is my second time doing this hairstyle and I love it. It doesn’t hurt my head when I wear it like this.
I'm glad it works out well for you!
Oh, I really want to learn this! I'm hoping to get a job at a grocery store and wanted some way to put my long hair up and out of the way without stuffing my hair full of pins...as they usually slowly work their way out.
For more stability without pins, you can use a matching (or contrasting...) ribbon to tie the two braids togather, maybe using an embroidery needle or topsy tail to pull it through the braids.
Love how you wrap your braid around your neck while braiding 😄😂
It’s because we have only limited lengths of arm! :D
I also cannot reach the ends of my hair while braiding so i have to do this too.
@@junkabella6324 o yes!! I totally understand!! My hair is till my butt so I can just reach it. It just looked so funny 😄
You have inspired me to grow out my hair!
I love love love your channel!! My hair is growing as never before and now I can FINALLY have the pleasure of doing your amazing hairstyles 🥰🥰🥰🥰 keep up the great inspirational videos 😊😊
This is pretty similar to my everyday hair style, but I skip the ponytail, just two separate braids, first I wrap them back then around the front and so on, I also use ribbon that is significantly longer than my hair, it wraps around an extra time and makes a sort of headband
im a man, and if you have someone in your family with long hair that can show us/me is there are any hungarian ribbon man styles. btw when my hair grows longer at least to midlength i might wear this and put a hoodie over it, over all i loved the style!
Hi I am half Hungarian and as far as I know, men in Hungary allways wore short hair, so there really aren't any long-hair or ribbon man hairstyles...
@@terezkahalamova2174 www.arcanum.hu/hu/online-kiadvanyok/Lexikonok-magyar-neprajzi-lexikon-71DCC/h-7297A/hosszu-haj-gombos-haj-72B8F/#Lexikonok%5ENeprajz-Lex-hosszú%20haj they didn’t always wore short hair, short hair became a common thing around the time of the revolution/forradalom and men did braid their long hair but they didn’t use ribbons
@@kata2653 Whoa! You rock with a knowledgeable resource! Thanks!
You want to look for ancient warrior hairstyles. Men in ancient times did do some funky things with their hair and I've seen vids on that on youtube. Start with Silvousplaits's, and then see what else is there.
@@mireah thank you very much !!
Well then, good lady, let me breefly, in as much of an essayist way as possible, lay out why this hairstyle was liked a good deal by me:
Firstly, PINLESS! If it is pinless, it pretty much is for me. Lazyness is strong in this one, you must know.
Secondly, folklore! Who doesn't like a hairstyle with a great tradition?
Thirdly, of course there are very similar hairstyles around in my European Home country. As you say, us Europeans really do have a thing for anything braided :)
Last, but not least: Your shiny personality might have to do with why I suddenly want to throw my hair up in big braids :)
The style really suits you! Even though my hair is not as thick, I will certainly try and copy a bit of that ;)
I usually only do one braid this way, and no rubberband. The trick is to start the braid, one or two crosses, then thread the ribbon through to lock it before braiding the rest of the way. Then I wrap it around my head and pull the ribbon up through the side of the braid to secure it before tying a giant bow next to my ear. If I'm not trying to be cute, I just lock a small ribbon in near the end of my hair and make a knot then tuck all the trailing ends under.
Woow! Why your channel has come to my attention only now?!?! BTW love your hair! I hope to grow that gray 🤞🤞or white as my grandma
Beautiful hairstyle
Very pretty hair style.
Wow I love this video and your voice is so calming. May I ask where did you get those beautiful earrings from?
Thank you! that's very sweet :) those earrings are actually from India
I'm definitely trying this hairstyle! My hair is past my feet dragging the floor and getting thinner and more breakable at the ends from two pregnancies back to back. 😅
Super happy I found your channel seeing as your hair is about my length or close to it. I hardly ever see good hair tutorials for hair that's actually LONG and not just shoulder length long. Thank you for posting this! ❤
Hahaha I have a long pixie cut and am happily watching :)
Your style is so beautiful I wanna CRY. It's inspiring me to dress more feminine and with more colors and hairstyles, cause damn it's so much fun and soooo beautiful, so thank you! Love your videos, and I find it very beautiful the way that you celebrate the folk culture of your country
I live your long hair and I always love ribbons I remember my late mom put two braids one on each side and she tried them together wonderful memory. Stay safe♥️😉
This is so beautiful . I’m growing my hair back out and it will be two years at least before I can do this but I’m looking forward to it.
This is lovely, just love your hairstyle. We do not have this style here in Canada, even when in older times. This is so pretty and I love following you.
I just found you and I love your tutorials and personality 💜
A nagymamámnak is ilyen frizurája volt, csak szalag nélkül. Imádtam.
Köszönöm szépen!!! ❤❤❤
Love your Chanel! You are fun and I am learning a lot! Thanks dear!
She is so beautiful!
I like that style, It's a pretty updo.
I don't know much about European hairdo's but this style is very similar to how my Appalachian Granny NORA' OSBORN MULLINS wore hers my entire life up till she passed away in1981😔🤞🙏
I found you yesterday, subscribed and I’m binge watching your videos. My hair is long, somewhat damaged from highlights, but going natural gray around my face, salt and pepper all around. I’m so happy you exist. ❤ I used to ribbon braid my hair as a kid.
This braid slides off my head like my relatives in times of need. 😩
In Spain we have a similar hairstyle too, it looks so beautiful!
I love this ribbon style! It looks graceful, feminine, and beautiful. My own style would be few if any additional ornament but it's still nice to see all the potential options and additions anyway. I do like those flowers! Thanks for the entertainment and ideas. Well wishes.
I love your style!
Lucky me! ♥
Na akkor meg is van a motiváció, hogy miért is növesszem meg a hajam!❤️ Hogy meg tudjam csinálni azokat a hajakat, amiket készítesz!☺️
HAJ-rá :)
Wuuuuiiiii 🤗🌼Thank you so much.. You explained it so well that I could easily follow the steps. I looove this look!🌹🌹
Régebben találtam rád, annyira örülök, hogy visszatértél❤️❤️
Köszönöm! Azon iparkodom, hogy megint legyen időm videót forgatni és vágni. Sok új ötletem van még :)
LOVELY! Thanks for sharing and I'm so happy I found you on RUclips! Authentically yours x
I will try this style on my youngest daughter. Her hair is very thick and is down to her hips at this point. Thank you.
I love this hairstyle so much! I’ve always found it so enchanting. My grandfather immigrated to the US from 🇭🇺 Hungary... perhaps it is my Magyar folk roots coming out.
So beatifuuuuuuuul!!!!
Honestly I´m loving your videos, I´m a viwer from Brazil!!! I love your content
Me: tries this with cheep synthetic Christmas present ribbon.
Result: almost no ribbon visible
I'm mexican and I've seen similar hairstyles in some indigenous communities and in folkloric dancing, it's so pretty 💕✨
How amazing! My sister visited Mexico and brought me some of those beaded hair ties! ✨
@@PrettyShepherd I hope she had a wonderful experience here! And I'm very happy you liked them 😊
Very pretty.
So cute!
I'm so determined now to get my hair to full health and grow it out. I've always wanted to be able to do hairstyles like this one, but my hair is so fine and thin, but God gave women long hair as a glory and that's supposed to mean me, too.
You are a delight. Trying this style next
I can't wait till my hair is long enough to try this hairstyle! I think braids mixed with ribbons look so nice! But, my hair isn't long enough yet to wrap around my head!
I hope my hair starts to grow I want to wear this style
Cool, I'm gonna try this out tomorrow. It's very pretty.
Beautiful!
Even in India , we have this traditional hairstyle...Loved it❤️
Love this so very much!!!
Köszi! Nagyon érdekelnek a Magyar népviseletek meg tradíciók, de sajnos nem nincs kitöl tanulnom, mert Németországban nőttem fel. Ezek a videók sokat segítenek
Very nice and amazing hairstyle 😍
Love these tutorials ! Thanks for putting so much effort into them :) you deserve wayyy more views
Thank you! I’m really glad you enjoyed it so much! Views are like grey hairs - they’ll come with time :D
I love it!🥰
Gorgeous I love the look!!!
this is a popular hairstyle in Germany, especially on Oktoberfest
Please uplod more ribbons hair steyls
So lovely :) I would need some pins for sure, every time I do this type of hair style it falls right off when I tip my head back! xD
I found the ribbon band trick works. Morgan Donner just released a video showing it. It’s somewhere in the middle of her video. You don’t need hair elastics, ties, or pins. You only need one really long ribbon.
@@hotjanuary Thanks! Yes I watched Morgan Donner's video too, can't wait to try that!
megtaláltam egy videódat régebben és megesküdtem volna hogy magyar akcentusod van, de ezek szerint jól éreztem :D 10 évig néptáncoltam, mi is hasonlóan kötöttük a hajunkat :))
Women from greece like m'y grandma always made braids like this from young age. My grandma had red long hair on a braid till the day she died.
Nice looking
omg u r funny and cute :D and i love ur grey hair so yeah, i SMASHED the subscribe button :3
Very helpful, thank you 😊 💖
Do you have any videos on sleep hairstyles from early ages? I feel like that's the secret to how people grew such long hair in the past 😅
My dance group is finally talking about getting back together for tanc practice! This will have to be a style I wear next time I perform :)
Yes, in Moldova, that's how my grandma breaded her below-the-knees-hair. She didn't use a ribbon, but she did hold it in place with one of those hairbrushes you show. They call them lice-brushes home. Ha-ha! The teeth are small enough, and close enough to brush lice out of your hair!
Nice hairstyle
You have amazing hair and I realy like practical hairstyles that do not need a lot of stuff to make . . . My hair is to short, but maybe I will get there . . . I have pretty thick hair, but if it gets a certein langth id does not grow any longer . . .at all
If you use hot tools, a hairdryer on hot, bleach, or permanent dye, it's likely the damage caused by using them is causing a false terminal length
@@alexismontez4230 I use none of those, I do not style my hair at all.
Oh! I have trouble keeping my "milkmaid" braids to stay in place, but I have never seen anyone starting with a ponytail. I'm off to try that now! I've tried sewing it to my hair with ribbon and that starts to hurt after a while. As do pins. Thanks!
Thank you!! So so pretty
As a kid my mother braided my hair around my head but with pins for Easter. I will definitely try it, hopefully this helps my long hair stay out of my face! Also I wonder if blanket binders (aka the ribbon on ends of kids blankets) would work...
guess who is going to steal this look
I am Mexican and many of the older women from indigenous cultures here still wear that hairstyle. But the norm here is the variation you mentioned where you use just one ribbon and put half in each braid.
How awesome! I actually have some beaded hair ties from Mexico - from my sister, who travels a lot 🌿✨
@@PrettyShepherd Really? That's so cool! Siblings who travel a lot and bring souvenirs are the best!
