  • We often think about tiny homes and go straight to little homes on trailers, but there are more ways to legally downsize to upsize your lifestyle!
In this episode Dan will tell you all about a concept he developed to wiggle around the red tape of legal tiny living in Ontario, a concept called The Breezeway!
This is a fantastic option for people looking to add an apartment to their home but still maintain their own space.
It's great for people wanting to bring their elderly relatives home to take care of them and keep them safe.
It's AWESOME for investment opportunities and extra monthly income,
and it is one of the EASIEST tiny homes to finance if you own the home it will be attached to!
We'll tell you all about it!
Please leave us a comment below telling us what kind of tiny home YOU would want to move into, and subscribe if you'd like to keep learning about how to live tiny in Ontario.
If you have further questions or would like to find out if a tiny home is the right fit for you, please follow the link below to take our quiz!

Sneaky? Maybe. Useful and well presented information on legally implementing a tiny house in Ontario? Definitely. Thanks for another great video Daniel. Peace, Calvin.

Mine will not be on wheels , a foundation… slab .

I have never seen anyone discuss the possibility of building down, as in excavating a basement. The footprint would remain the same. The bonus is room for utilities and water heater, furnace, softener, water filters etc., as well as storage space and a cold storage area for preserves/wine, whatever. Of course there’s the added cost of excavating, but the spoil could be spread around the perimeter of the structure to raise the grade. This would negate the cost of any haulage to remove the spoil.

Hi, Cris T. Usually, people are talking about tiny home to use their money in the best way possible for the most return on their dollar. With the codes in Ontario about what has to happen in the basement in regards to insulation and vapour barrier and even radon mitigation, you are looking at an additional $30,000 or more. I highly recommend just building a larger tiny home and putting the $30,000 into something above grade instead.
But, to each their own. It's not out of the question, for sure. I've discussed it with several clients, but no one has gone forward with anything like this due to the additional costs.

Considering a tiny home build up in Bracebridge- Huntsville area but know nothing about their zoning laws. Do you have any suggestions how to begin research ?
Would this breezeway idea work if primary home is tiny and is joined with large garage structure with a breezeway ?

    • @UpSizeDown
      @UpSizeDown  3 года назад +1

Hi, Rob. The breezeway idea works to make something one building if a municipality doesn't allow accessory dwelling units. It could also work to get around minimum house sizes, especially seeing as Bracebridge-Huntsville area has minimum sizing still. However, a garage is not considered when determining house size, so you would still need to have the main dwelling area be larger.
We can certainly look into all of this for you if you buy into our workshops. Send us an email hello@truenorthtinyhomes.ca to get more information.

Kindly tell me the price of a community tiny house in Ontario. Not on lot but a regular house but tiny. Approximately.

We are currently building a 935 SF house (two tiny homes put together) that would be about $350,000.

I’m in the Ottawa Valley area as well. Really interested in the tiny home movement. Sister has an empty rural property about 5 minutes away from Calabogie, Ontario and I desperately need somewhere to live. All the laws and building codes are a bit overwhelming if you’ve never built a home especially accepting that it can change from county to county.

first, find out where you want to live. If you can get a friend or family member to agree to house you in their backyard, great. If you can purchase land first for yourself, even better. Then email us hello@truenorthtinyhomes.ca!
