Been doing exactly the same thing here! Used to live a few miles from the man who started it all in Petaluma, CA and have been head over heels with the ideology and lifestyle ever since. She has a great channel here. It's truly inspiring!
I also live in Calgary and my mom wants to live in a tiny house. I was so afraid about the cold that I told her it was a very bad idea. It was really good to see this vídeo, it change my mind. Thanks!
After watching endless tiny house videos, RUclips presented me with yours. Your house is gorgeous and your talks are so helpful that I’m sure I will have watched all your videos by the time I realize my own tiny home dream about a year from now. I am 77 and I want to spend my remaining years in a tiny home of my dreams, not in an assisted living type nightmare of a condo.
In my other dream, my husband (80), inspired by my tiny home, will design and build his own. His home will be parked on the other side of the covered courtyard that our tinies share.
I LOVE your dream scenario! There’s something to be said for having your own space. You could even build a tiny studio for crafts, art, music or any other hobby.
I’m wanting a tiny house so badly . I’m 64 I have some limitations cause I’m on oxygen sometimes but I can still do a lot too. My problem my sons don’t think I should live in one ! But they haven’t been studying them for 5 years either. They would have me in assisted living but that would cost way more. Even trying to sell them on an RV in a warmer climate they want me to rent. I want my own home. Your build is perfect almost lol.love the close up stairs

Hey!! I too live in Calgary and was thrilled to see this video because I was curious on how they are during the cold snaps. I am in the begining stages of decluttering and following the minimalists to aim to living in a tiny home in the next couple years or so. I just cannot imagine that level of cold as I live in sub-tropical Africa. Love the design of your tiny home. It's has one of the best layouts I've ever seen.

I have found that a string or two of Christmas lights are a valuable asset when it comes to knowing if you have tripped a breaker that powers heat cables. Living in Central NY with brutal winters at times it can save you a headache. Living in a manufactured home for almost 25 years you learn a trick or two.

Hi Gary, absolutely. I think the key is to build for a cold climate. Making sure your insulation and heating choices are sufficient for where you plan to live. I think it’s also key to have the underneath of the trailer sheathed in and to do a good job of skirting.

You might look into a small wood stove so you would have backup heat in the winter.

Hi! Love your videos! It’s great to see a Canadian woman doing this! I have been following tiny houses for years and keep a collection of designs I love - yours is one of them. I am now in a town house (alone) and really find that it is too big for me. But there are very few trailer parks here in Quebec and only a couple of municipalities up north that have made tiny house developments legal. Anyways, you are an inspiration!
Thanks Cathy. That’s how I felt in my townhouse after the second kid left home. To big and took to long to clean. My friends joke that I can stand in my tiny house kitchen and vacuum the whole house without moving my feet 😂. Not quite but I’ve done it all including the bathroom in under 15 mins LOL.

glad to hear a canadian opinion. i have recently started a new job and started renting fairly close to calgary. tiny homes have had my full attention lately and have given me something to work towards with my improved income. all the videos i see are from southern united states, so i never know how they would do in a cold canadian winter. thanks for your video, good luck with your new home, bless you

I just so love ur house... I have a 40 ' 5th wheel but older of course, I have had her for quite a while. I live in cold also, Colorado, in the mountains..I put in a new sub floor this yr. And I have tank heat for my water and insole my 5x9 windows but after seeing ur home I have definately gotta decorat and remodel more...I switched my living room and kitchen...like u I gotta have a big kitchen because cooking is a blast. I have a wood cook stove in my kitchen (love love that) which I LOVE cooking on and I made everything stainless steel...hope to finish it out this winter...right now I am reinstating under my trl. And doing roof maintenance...I would love for mine to look like ur's but is 8' wide..love ur presentations, it gives me ideas...lol

Your explanation of the Christmas lighting issue leads me to believe the 3 plugs outside are wired to one circuit. Outside plugs only need to have one plug on the circuit set up with the ground fault if all tied together. This is very common, maybe even code in some areas. When you said everything outside was out, and came back on when you reset the ground fault interrupt on the one plug was the tell tale for my theory. That being the case, the reason for breaker tripping was overload on the circuit. The length of the extension cord, plus the quality, may have led to more resistance, causing more draw than you would expect. Plus the heat tape on the lines would probably be a few amps. (I have never used it, so I don't really know, but anything providing heat draws more power) To check, you could get an electrician to test the circuit with an meter to see if the circuit is dead when it is turned off. One thing you could do is get as short of extension cord as you need, but get a good one rated for cold weather. (This would be bigger in size, which would give more copper in the cord, thus reducing power loss for resistance. The other, is maybe have an electrician put it on a dedicated circuit as it should have been. The red herring in doing that may be only having a 50 amp service. It sounds like the perfect storm scenario. Really cold, Christmas lights and heat tape all at once. That may be why it only has happened once, and may only require turning off the lights outside at night when it is really cold. I have built a couple tiny homes, (no way near what you have, but on used trailer, and off grid) Yours is gorgeous. My god son lives in Stettler, so next time I'm out there I'm going to check out your builder. My wife and I have both retired now, and our house and lot are way too big. We also need a fifth wheel as mobility may be an issue for me in the future. And a second loft would be a great spot for a paint studio for her. I would prefer a 10 wide rather than 8.6.

Hi! I'm an electrician and just wanted to add my two cents. If you aren't overloading the circuit, the easiest fix would be to replace the GFCI with one that has an audible alarm. Leviton brand sells one for around $24 (US dollars) at HomeDepot. If the circuit popped you would most likely be able to hear it from inside your awesome tiny! 🙂

Thermopane glass would be better for windows...they are isolated this way and it works really well. In Europe, we usually have this and there is no condense on the glass no matter how low the temperature is.

Now is time to combine everything, design and build a tiny house, although not before doing a comprehensive research to customize and address exactly what we want. My experience has been (not a tiny home, just medium to big homes) that if the grid electrical supply "wobbles" so it's up & down multiple times within a scant few minutes, any circuit close to its capacity will turn off. I'm in the U.S. so your mileage may vary.

Can I ask what the R rating of your insulation is? Or the kind of insulation you have in your walls? I like designing tiny homes but the only way I can fit the appropriate R rating for Canadian winters into less than a foot of wall space is by utilizing SIPs [exps I think] which is mighty expensive. I have heard though that, because the spaces are so small and easy to heat, you don't actually need the full 38R rating recommended for a full sized residence.
I've also been trying to determine what building codes apply, for example in a house all halls and stairs need to be 3 feet wide [other than pull down stairs and access ladders] and that obviously isn't the case with a tiny house, but I wouldn't, theoretically, want to go through the trouble and cost of building something that someone could argue was illegal to own or live in, in theory. I love designing tiny homes but there doesn't seem much point in designing homes that could never actually be priced out and built. Most of the resources I can find aren't geared towards people specifically working with the width permitted by driving limitations and also within the heat requirements of northern Canadian living.

No but the underside of my trailer is sheathed with tin.
I know what week you're talking about. We only got down to -5F. I have heat tape on my mobile too but anytime the temp is gonna be single digit or lower I always leave water run in a very rapid drip or thin stream. Think this is gonna be one for the record books. Are you allowed to have a mini wood stove? I've got a big one and it's a comfort in case we have an electrical outage. Stay warm, be safe. And I totally get the love/hate thing about winter! 😆

You will get use to the furnace noise. We lived in a town where seven times a night a train went through. We got so we didn’t hear it, but our guests did!

You could get a pop up type shelter for car. At least the snow would not get on it if roof strong enough !
